    I recently got a Lenovo Thinkpad for work and absolutely love it, a major upgrade compared with the Dell desktop I was using.
    My wife and I are in the market for a new laptop and the IdeaPad 5 looks awesome, especially at $500 on eBay. This review helped me pull the trigger on it. Our current laptop Is an older Lenovo with a HDD that we both despise. Can't wait to have a snappy and fast laptop for pretty much the first time in my life. 512gb SSD and ability to add more is awesome. Thanks!

    So after finally getting this laptop (14", 4500U grey version) because it was sold out almost everywhere (and magically restocked in a bunch of places after my buy :D) and using it for two weeks I have to ay, that this is a really comfortable mid tier laptop.
    Typing on the keyboard feels very pleasent, the track pad has a sufficient size and the backlight also functions at most viewing angles. The material feels very premium and high quality. As of yet it doesn't show any fingerprints.
    My biggest concern was the screen since it was stated almost everywhere that is has a poor colour coverage. But I didn't experienced any bothersome deficiencies which couldn't be fixed by manual screen settings.
    I don't edit photographs for a living so this could be one reason but at the end of the day the screen is absolutely fine for everyday work.
    More important, the screen fills out almost the entire brezel. No space is wasted. Battery life is also quite long lived with around 4 hours of battery life at 60% and while browsing/watching videos.
    What impressed me the most was the absolute silence operation. The fan rarely spins up and probably only at heavy tasks like gaming (haven't tried it yet) or rendering.
    So for me this is probably one of the best student/office laptops out there. Small, lightweight, quite powerful and neutral in look.
    (The mechanical webcam blocker also prevents the need for one of those ugly stickers :D)
    Thanks for doing these reviews W2Best, I probably wouldn't have bought this gem without you're quality and usability checks!

    • @w2best
      @w2best  3 года назад

      Thanks for such a detailed comment! I really agree with what you say! I had some doubt about it - but it's a super nice laptop in almost every way. The screen is fine, it's just not great. The battery life is decent but also not great. But altogether it's a really fine laptop!

    • @Vulcano7965
      @Vulcano7965 3 года назад

      @@w2best Yeah it's really fine for its price point. It could easily be something worse. Although I would've like a replaceable RAM but that seems to be the future for a lot of laptop line ups sadly.

  • @GADG3Tx87

    Very thorough review. Very impressive and even more thorough than some of the more common channels on RUclips.
    I have a question regarding the audio though. You tested the speakers and I thought they sounded a bit distorted at the higher volume. Is it noticeable when you are in front of the laptop? How clear is dialogue audio? I intend to use it for some light tasks and media consumption on the go so the studio is a very important area for me.
    Most people don't even bother with speaker tests these days so this was highly appreciated in your video.

    • @w2best
      @w2best  3 года назад

      The speakers are great but at the very max volume it felt like the chassis vibrated in some way that made that distortion sound. I never got bothered by it at normal use!

    I got my Ideapad 5 14-inch last week and the variant here in the Philippines comes with a barrel pin charger port beside the lone USB C.... This variant might also be available other parts in Asia. I could not check if It charges via usb c because I only have an 12 watt usb c mobile charger. If it does, then its an absolute steal. Ryzen 4700u + 16 gb ram + good port selection at an affordable price.

    Hi, and thank you for this review. I bought the model 81YM003TYA with the same specifications, just without OS. I installed W10, and tried Cinebench R20 in normal mode. I got 2573, 2591, and 2565 pts, from three testings. The fans were very loud from about 20th second, until almost the end, and the hinge got very hot. On the fourth testing, the battery was on 19% remaining, the result was 1423 pts, and the screen dimmed by itself. On normal mode the Hardware Info measured maximum temperature of CPU at 92,6 C, while Cinebench R20 was running. Then I opened 4 tabs in Chrome, where I listened music on You Tube on one tab, and started working in Word and Excel simultaneously. The temperature of the cores was mostly within 42 to 45 C, maximum was 57,6 C. However, the left side of the laptop, from letter H to the left got hot quite fast and stays like that under this regime of work. Can you tell me please, is all this heating up and temperature normal?
    Thank you.

    I have this laptop the 16gb 4700u version, I got lucky and bought this £475 off of ebay brand new. The version I have also has a 100% Rgb (300 nits) screen (in the Uk this was available on the customisation a few months back before it was removed) and the same metal build as shown here, with that screen I can easily say it can be useful for creators as it performs very well, the 100% rgb is one of the best screens in the budget price range and makes this laptop a massive bargain (again if you can find that model). In the UK it's hard to get the top config as they have limited the options now.

    • @w2best

    What Lenovo made with this model is just absurd. Here in Poland it is being sold with a plastic case, much smaller battery and in most configs just a terrible TN screen (how can you make the same model with so many differences?). It is still sturdy, but there's just many of the points that do not apply to this config. In the end it's not worth the price because you can get for example Acer Swift 3.

    • @w2best

      A TN screen. That's strange. Here it's IPS in all SKUs but the Colours are not very nice. That's pretty much the only downside though.

Or ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2 (13 inch) With I7-1165G7, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, for 810 euros. Its for use besides my desktop. I prefer bigger screen and design of Flex 5 and its cheaper. Since you've had your hands on both which would you personally buy? Ideapad or the Slim7?

      I would buy slim 7 any day of they are the same price. Better port setup screen and speakers. If Ideapad 5 is half price and you really care about money I think you will be as happy with it. However 16gb ram to be safe for a few years.

      @@w2best Thanks for the reply! And sorry to bother you with another question. But do you think the 4700u would be worth the extra cost?
