Trust me, I've been repairing many IdeaPads with this issue, hence why I only recommend cheap ThinkPads with Ryzen. There are always deals on E-Series ThinkPads with 4th and 5th gen Ryzen APUs.

    Honestly for the price this seems like a pretty solid option. I'm looking to do mobile streaming with software encoding and it seems like the CPU has enough "oomph" to do that well enough. Pretty good bang for the buck it seems. Being able to play my massive library of old Steam games and handle emulation well is just icing on the cake.

    • @GameplayandTalk
      @GameplayandTalk 3 года назад +3

      @@vancanque2213 It works fine if you only run a stream. A 1080p60 stream at 6mbps sits at around 30 - 35% CPU utilization in OBS. However, it has limited resources and the moment I even so much as load up a web browser the CPU utilization jumps up a lot, sometimes to the 50+% range which is where you will start dropping frames because it's being pushed too hard. I cannot stream and record a 1080p60 stream at the same time, as it's too much for the system (recording while streaming 720p60 is OK). I still haven't upgraded the RAM yet though and that might help with the performance. Ultimately I wish I just paid the extra $150 or so for a more capable laptop, but it's getting the job done either way. Just not as well as I thought it would.

    I have a different 5500U laptop (HP 15s-eq2008 is the exact model) and I am very pleasantly surprised of the machine - snappy APU, good IPS screen, VERY loud speakers, light and respectable battery. The Vega iGPU is very respectable performer and totally wasn't worth buying an i5 + MX330 combo instead like I intended initially. The performance would have been overall the same even worse in some cases and also my track record with the budget laptops I have owned shows that the dedicated GPU always dets gamaged first as a component. So that's why I am glad I found a powerful enough APU solution for a relatively small price ( my budget was not so high and the local PC market sucks in general )

This reminds me of the late 90's. You would buy a new computer and it would be overshadowed in less than 6 months. It's happening again. I have Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 6 13ARE05 powered by Ryzen 4700U with 16GB RAM, and man, this is a beast. So far I'm looking for ways to push it, and yeah, for normal workload and even light gaming, this thing works like a charm. Too bad the RAM is soldered to the board, but M2 NVMe SSD is upgradable. I got mine for over USD1100, but for thin and light 2 in 1 ultrabook, they are quite the bang for the bucks. Battery life (while using intelligent cooling) can last me 6 hours of continuous RUclips video, and with Windows Battery Saver mode, I can get at least 7 hours before needing to recharge.

    After owning this for a month or so I figured I'd comment since I doubt this will get a revisit. This has been a great laptop for some Pc gaming and pretty much all emulation for me. The weird problems he was having running skate3 have been fixed in later versions of rpcs3, and If I lock sake3 to vsync 30fps It's smooth and playable at a constant 30. All other emu has been great, ps3, psp (chains of olympus I played though the entire game 3x res) it's all been great. I put a 1tb m.2 drive and an 8gb stick for 12gb total. Also, I run a laptop cooler and boost the TDP to 40w.Play Forza Horizon 4 900p low, gtaV 900p low no problem. This thing has performed beyond my expectations and my only real complaint would be the TN panel. Should have been IPS. Otherwise, Lenovo hit a home run on this and if you can handle the TN display (doesn't bother me that much) the performance of this thing is great.

    I recently bought HP 15s as a secondary PC. It surprises me that it can still be capable to do the same tasks as on my main desktop gaming/heavy video rendering machine even with a Radeon iGPU. What I also love with this HP laptop is it has 2 upgradeable RAM slots instead of 1 soldered RAM so I quickly installed another 8GB of RAM after purchase.

    Man, when AMD eventually releases Zen3 APUs with RDNA2 GFX(both desktop and laptop) we will have the ultimate emulation systems. :-D The GPUs will finally have the horsepower to match the Ryzen CPUs. And it should be at a decent price.

    • @jusia80
      @jusia80 3 года назад

      There's a lot of talk about any increase in APU graphics performance being linked to DDR5 introduction, so in a way that is the step we're waiting for. Without DDR5 the bandwidth to support better graphics performance is not there, which is likely why the current APUs still don't have RDNA2 in them

    • @SirReptitious
      @SirReptitious 3 года назад

      @@jusia80 Actually, when new DDR versions come out, they are around the same performance as the high end of the previous one, so there is very little gain. But once it's been out for a while, THAT is when the speeds start to go up and you realize it's actual potential. So what I am saying is that DDR5 is not required to have RDNA1 or 2 perform better than Vega. I am still on AM3+ with a FX-8350, so I am not yet on Ryzen. I would be perfectly satisfied with an 8 core- 16 thread Ryzen APU with RDNA using DDR3200-3600.

      Dual channel just means both slots are occupied allowing a larger address size per cycle of the ram clock. It dosnt have to be matching size for dual channel, its ideal, but not completely necessary.
      Check the specification tab to see how big of a stick it'll support. Some laptops even lock it to only accept ram with x model#'s, dells known for it.
      However the size limit should be a 8-16gb dimm, but the speed will be forced to whatever the soldered ram will run at, which id imagine is set out of the box and can be found in the bios screen. 8gb is usually whats typical for laptops. Some of them support 16gb dimms, but if thats not listed, check the oem page and see what is the largest ram size they'll let you add if you purchase it from them and just minus the soldered on ram

    • @scale8125
      @scale8125 3 года назад

      Idk about 360p to 1080p, it can turn dirt to gold but it probably won't even be able to turn liquid shit to metal. FSR is expected to not be as good as DLSS 2.0 (at least at launch, fingers crossed for open source). In their press conference they showed mostly upscaling to 4k from "Almost 4k". We aren't sure how bad their lower end super sampling will be, but I can guarantee 360p will not work, or will look terrible. You're probably gonna see "almost 1080p" do the best. 720p on the low end, 900p in most scenarios.

    I got this a while back for $399. And at that price, it's a no brainer!
    Yeah it's a TN panel, you have to get into the settings and tweak it for MAX contrast to get anything
    near acceptable and run it at 100% brightness which will kill some battery life. And even
    then the colors are on the cold side. It leans COOL very COOL, too cool!
    But at this price? I got a Philips 24" monitor with 100% sRGB color, etc. for $119 on sale and, well.
    $520 for a pretty fast laptop with good color, lol. What is there to complain about?
    The AMD 5500 is more than enough for the "average Joe". For gamers, sure perhaps a 5600/5800, a graphics care, and more RAM might do the job. But most other uses? It FAST! lol!
    At less than $400, if you can find it, this is the machine to beat! Backlit keyboard, fingerprint scan, decent keyboard, OK speakers-could be better there. SSD-fast! The screen, yeah, not so great.

      as i said this laptop was made for basic user with cheaper prices. gaming in this laptop just a bonus, as this laptop used AMD APU. if you want to go for such heavy workload, then get gaming laptop or proper ultrabook.
      you can also put another 8gb or 16gb stick there as AMD support for max 32gb dual.

      If there wasn't an extra slot this would be a valid comment. Usually being soldered is a problem not just because it's soldered, but because there's no way to add memory to upgrade it. That isn't the case here

    I recently bought the 14" version Lenovo V14 G2 ALC, AMD Ryzen™ 5 5500U, 14", Full HD, 8GB, 512GB SSD. It has some differences, for example it has 8GB RAM soldered and comes with empty ram slot(instead of dual channel 4GB soldered and 4Gb in the slot), and also has a slot for an additional 2.5" drive(but you need to buy HDD/SSD connector flex cable ~$5).

      It’s good for the price. Screen isn’t great, it’s plastiky, shows a lot of finger prints. the version I bought which I’m guessing is the same I’m not checking has only 250 gigabytes storage which is a big mistake on my part. But for all it’s faults it does play my little indie games well, the keyboard is decent, I pretty happy with if you don’t count the memory. 👍
