It's not that dim. I have it. You can work with it outside in shades and in brightly lit areas, just not against direct sunlight. It covers 99% sRGB/72% NTSC. The only issue I have with the display is that its brightness at minimum is not that low.

Great channel man! Thanks for all your help with finding a laptop. I've been racking my brain trying to find a new computer in this price range. This was right on time!
Thank you for the recommendation. I too, am disappointed by the bad panels found in most laptops within my budget. In 2020, there are a few with good brightness and contrast but I am hoping to find at least 90% sRGB for some photos editing. My old laptop has poor colour and I often ended up with greenish photos that is not visible on my laptop, but appeared in every phone screens. So I actually appreciate the emphasis you placed on the panel quality.
Josh, just watching for the first time. Really useful. Very pleasant onscreen persona. Can I make a suggestion? Like many, many other videotubers, you’ve adopted the two-camera production technique... addressing the viewer with the main camera... and then briefly and periodically cutting away to the second camera (which acts as a kind of eavesdropper to the main conversation). Whilst using this technique is great for an interview (where the viewer is in a permanent eavesdropping role), does it make much sense when you are addressing the viewer directly? The great strength of these kind of video productions (directly addressing the viewer in a pleasant, friendly, and informative manner) is the intimacy. In this regard, they are not unlike late night radio. A close one-to-one (almost confessional) style. That’s where many presenters come unstuck. We don’t watch RUclips videos in a group. We watch them alone. It’s personal and closeup. That’s why when a presenter begins with ‘Hi guys, what’s up?’, he has effectively already shattered the unique, unspoken bond of closeupness. And that’s why, Josh, when you cut away to the second camera, you also are subliminally trampling on the close relationship you are building (very successfully, I might add) with the viewer. From being a valued friend, the viewer is sudden catapulted (albeit briefly) into the role of (almost unwelcome) eavesdropper. Think for a moment. How many conversations with friends and colleagues do you have during the day when the person you’re talking to one-to-one suddenly without warning turns away mid-sentence and starts talking to someone else... or even, without a word of explanation or apology, ignores you and continues with a smartphone conversation! My guess is it never happens. Because it’s actually quite rude. Please consider this for a moment. These cutaways in one-to-one videos occur from time to time on RUclips. You’ll never see them in TV to-camera documentaries. Are they ever the hallmark of the accomplished professional?
Nice review, keep up the good work, it nice to the analysis breakdown, it shown manufacturers isn't putting enough effort to cater their products for average consumer or keeping up with time, for instance, slapping TN 768p display in 2020, at least give us VA/IPS 1080p.
Would love to see the Asus Vivobook S15 This has been one of my top3 my Con would be the micro SD slot. Also how do you tell if it's IPS if it's not in description? How to tell if it's IPS on demo unit?
I am buying a laptop for my grandson who is interested in creative content and video editing. I had no clue so began a search for the specs required. I read countless reviews and recommendations and watched lots of RUclips reviews that left me totally confused. Then I found your review. I learned more in your 20 minute video than all of the others combined and was able to make an informed decision. Thank you so much for your simple, straight forward and factual approach to educate those of us with zero technical knowledge. I am watchimg your other videos just to see what more I can learn!

Hi! I was playing laptop videos on autoplay and I went past this video already. I had to pause what I was watching next to go back to this video and give it a like. Well done and thank you so much for such an in-depth video!
I know the Acer had good specs but I’ve always heard Acers are the most poorly built laptops with the worst reliability and durability. Has this been fixed in the last year or two?
Maybe it depends on the model? I bought an Acer Predator over 4 years ago and it's still going strong. I recently bought an Acer Swift 3 because I needed a lightweight ultrabook to bring with me to class and so far it's been performing well. Hopefully it lasts as long as my Predator has!
I just bought the Honor Magicbook 14, for 600€, but it's coming with a smartwatch worth 160€, making it around 450€, so it's at incredible value for what it offers. Haven't received it yet, but I'm already excited. Basically the same specs as the matebook 14d for significantly less

I have the Zenbook 14 UM433DA with R7 3700u and16GB RAM. The brightness of the BOE NV140FHM-N63 panel is 300nits. It somehow seemed dim to me as well on first glance, but I took it out and worked in a coffee shop by cranking the brightness to full - no problem. The matte anti-reflective screen was the savior. Just don't expect it to hold up in direct sunlight. The screen, apart from the brightness is actually a high quality IPS panel with 72% NTSC rating. The lowest brightness is not that low.
Josh, thank you for your amazing work! I'm a complete newb in laptops, I only started watching you yesterday, and today I already feel like I can make a clear decision about what laptop to choose.
Get an external monitor 90% srgb feels unrealistic
I would like to see the review of the Lenovo C740 it seems like a very good deal
Are they ever the hallmark of the accomplished professional?
you should make "the best mid-range laptop" video
Nice review, keep up the good work, it nice to the analysis breakdown, it shown manufacturers isn't putting enough effort to cater their products for average consumer or keeping up with time, for instance, slapping TN 768p display in 2020, at least give us VA/IPS 1080p.
Would love to see the Asus Vivobook S15 This has been one of my top3 my Con would be the micro SD slot. Also how do you tell if it's IPS if it's not in description? How to tell if it's IPS on demo unit?
This is the video we need! Thanks for uploading!!!
I would love your review on Lenovo C740
I am buying a laptop for my grandson who is interested in creative content and video editing. I had no clue so began a search for the specs required. I read countless reviews and recommendations and watched lots of RUclips reviews that left me totally confused. Then I found your review. I learned more in your 20 minute video than all of the others combined and was able to make an informed decision. Thank you so much for your simple, straight forward and factual approach to educate those of us with zero technical knowledge. I am watchimg your other videos just to see what more I can learn!
Thanks Lana, glad I could help you
Just josh ranting about brightness for 20 mins
Lol
@@JustJoshTech 😂 was informative though!
Amazing and detailed video bud keep up the amazing work .
A used t series Thinkpad provides the best value imo
I was looking at a used t480 for about $450
.....but im a little uncomfortable with the 14 inch display
What do you think
Finally, a RUclipsr speaking my language when it comes to real concerns I have with laptops. Thank you for doing the research and uploading this video!
Please, review the asus zenbook 14 inch!
You covered every necessary qualification and specification a laptop should have. Definitely going to subscribe and review your laptop considerations since I’m in the market for a new one.
Hi - I need a new laptop for use in Zoom meetings & tutorials, my current laptop has a noisy fan which is especially loud in recordings/playbacks - which would you recommend for my purposes? I was looking at Acer Swift 3 or 5 as a mid price laptop, but I'm not sure... thanks.
@@xXMeepzXx Happy to hear. Maybe Acer drastically increased their quality over the last several years.
Best channel for anything computer. Shows real care and passion earned my sub!
Yoga C740 (14”) price changed ? :(
I love how in depth this was sent this vid to my friend starting school soon said it was very helpful.
Glad it helped!
How many open tabs you want?
Just Josh: yes
I just bought the Honor Magicbook 14, for 600€, but it's coming with a smartwatch worth 160€, making it around 450€, so it's at incredible value for what it offers. Haven't received it yet, but I'm already excited. Basically the same specs as the matebook 14d for significantly less
Ideapad s540 review pls
15 inch one with gtx1650
You definitely earned a new sub for your excel sheet. That's exactly what I'm doing right now to find a good affordable laptop and I know how much work you're doing. Lenovo C740 is confirmed the winner, thanks
since ryzen 4000 is crushing everything in this vid ... its outdated like crazy
Your enthusiasm is great. Like your Australian accent. About to buy my 1st laptop so your review is very helpful. Thank you.
FINALLY, someone who understands the very complex word..... BUDGET. thanks for the video mate.loved it
This is the best video I have seen about comparisons between laptops , and I love the fact that you established a set of minimum standards to start your selection (I do the same when I'm going to buy a pc)
Your analysis earned my respect. Your spreadsheet earned my subscription. Thumbs up 👍
Josh, thank you for your amazing work! I'm a complete newb in laptops, I only started watching you yesterday, and today I already feel like I can make a clear decision about what laptop to choose. I completely support your conclusions about Dell, I'm currently using Inspiron 15, and though it is a solid machine, their displays are horrible! And I work with designers on macbooks, so I really need more quality there. Thanks to you now I know what parameters of display i need to check. You are a legend!
Thank you very much! I do appreciate you don't say just, "this is bad and this is good." You explain so clear to me why you make your choice.
