Hey. I got the IdeaPad 5 last year with a full Aluminium chassis and a 100% sRGB display, but in a standard 16:9 format (Btw I think Lenovo ditched the screen option right after that for the normal IdeaPad, because they knew they could put and sell the better display in their upcoming IdeaPad Pro lineup) The quality control problems you described in this Lenovo review and other Lenovo reviews have been my experience too (my touchpad rattles, the plastic bezel can be pushed in at the exact same spot as you've shown etc.) I really hope Lenovo get's the hang there, because they're otherwise producing quality laptops. Also as always a really detailed, complete review!
I just ordered this exact machine yesterday, based on your previews since all windows laptos were -20% at a local store for the weekend. This review wasn't up yet. I basically had to decide between the Yoga slim 7 4700u (not the pro) and this, as they were the same price. I was mainly worried about the battery life and quality compared to the older yoga 7 slim. I wish I had this review but it seems I made the right decision! Thanks for the great content by the way, really helped with deciding.
@@w2best Yeah, Gigantti in Finland. I guess it's the same company. I'd been looking for a new portable laptop for a few weeks so the sale was a nice surprise, almost missed it.
What do you think about the battery, for like reading pdfs and having some chome tabs open and maybe a text editor? Do you think you can go like 8 hours without charging?
@@ruigoncalves7157 I think it can do 8+ hours in that type of use if you keep the screen brightness moderate. To be honest the battery life is the biggest disappointment in this device, everything else is great. The regular slim 7 has by far superior battery (15h+) apparently but you're stuck with the 16:9 screen ratio. The performance difference between R7 4700U and R7 5800U is apparently negligible. I was tempted to change to the slim 7 for the battery life but realized that I don't really have uses where I can't access a power outlet for 8 hours so I kept the Ideapad 5 pro. Of course the battery life will deteriorate over time so that's one consideration as well if you need long battery life.
Thank you for your reviews! I've come across your channel when choosing a laptop (my old personal Acer S7-392 is good enough only for web browsing and streaming services these days =). I also used Lenovo T450 at my previous job. I was thinking about Yoga Slim 7 Pro, but there was shortage of Yogas recently, and the price difference played important role - I got my Ideapad 5 Pro 5600U/16/1 Tb/noOs for approx. 900 euros, while Slim 7 Pro prices were 1250/1375/1500 for 5600H/5800H/5900HX versions (and the last two were very hard to find). These are prices in Russia. I got my laptop half a week ago, so far my experience is same as yours (though I've been using it for browsing/MS Office work), except for cright bezel cracks =) I like touch and feel, there are noticeable fingerprints. Screen is great (it was really important for me as my Acer S7 13-inch screen had 2560x1440 resolution), though it seems to me that RUclips Full hd videos are a little blurred. I like the keyboard, but experienced some difficulties with Shift+Alt language switching - quite often it doesn't work at first. What I didn't like is touchpad sound =) Sounds cheap. Battery life is nice, I can use it thoughout a day with no need for charging. The laptop is really quiet and cool under no serious load, but when I pluged it in I noticed that fan worked continiously - maybe it compensates heat from charging. Nice news about DaVinci work - I need to cut my GoPro footage, hope it'll work nice with 4K videos even with 5600U) P.S. I also noted that sometimes Wi-Fi is slow to connect when laptop wakes up from sleep mode. I open it, enter passcode and need to wait another 5-10 seconds for it to connect.

i really love your reviews and how you go to the effort to cover everything and i mean everything. its hard to find reviews on tech that give you all the nessessary information so thank you!
I bought one of the R7-5800H, (second-hand) and did a repaste and cleaning. Then I became curious towards the speakers because it a long module and not the same. It turns out, it really has up-firing speakers, although a bit small and it lines up near the CTRL and RIGHT CURSOR keys. Therefore, it is quad-speakers! Guessing by the size, it may be 1W speakers. Just wanted to let you know, since your channel is the only one who did an in-depth review.
One of the best review of all kind for me. Thank you! I am surprised how it runs so cool even under 100% work load. Does no thunderbolt means that it cannot be connect to a qhd 144hz monitor or higher?
Hey, thank you for your detailed and diverse review! I have yesteryear's model, which has very severe problems concerning the CPU clock whilst being plugged in. They basically have a design flaw in their power rail, where a coil is so undersized that the power to the CPU is so unstable that the CPU panickes and throttles to 0.38 GHz, when you have the laptop plugged in and run a game for example. With your unigine Heaven benchmark you proved, that they changed that in this generation, thank you!
Hey mineapple, I have the exact same laptop as you do and I think I can help you resolve that issue. This only happens if your laptop is CHARGING, not just plugged in. If your battery is fully charged or conversation mode is on (so battery isnt charging), you will not experience this horrible throttle. Another thing you can do is install ryzen controller (completely free and reliable software) that lets you limit the power sent to the CPU. By only limiting by a little amount, you can fix this problem entirely. Im regularly doing high cpu usage gaming and never having this problem anymore. If you need any more help around this issue, let me know!
@@rebelkassadin thank you very much! I've never thought about reducing the power. However I will finally get mine refunded on Monday. Sadly I had the issues even with it in conservation mode or at 100%.
@@mineapple8612 Oh, seems like yours was a much worse case than mine then, unlucky. But hey at least you get a refund :D Anyway, if you do get this new laptop (shown in this video), let me know how it is compared to our old one :D
nice review, no bullshit - just facts from a common point of view, good balancing of pros and cons. Have you kept it? Did a BIOS or driver update resolve the USB-C monitor issues?
Excellent review Jonas! I think the amd version is what i want. Even though in india its the intel i5 variant is already for sale, il wait for the amd or find it in the us
Hello :) After another 7 months, can you tell me more about your experience of this laptop with davinci resolve ? (if you still have this laptop). Good enough for work on 4k files ?
Thank you soooo much, I will buy it next month…. I jade Hp envy 14 and it was a disaster 😂 +1 sub 🎉 But this Lenovo ideapad 14 but intel version should be good for me… for cybersecurity work and medicine also 😂
Thanks for your review. Going to buy an IdeaPad 5 Pro and a pack of i5 1135g7 and mx450 or ryzen 7 5800u choices. The price is the same. I can't decide which is better. I would like to hear your opinion.
Thank you for your review! Just ordered that machine (14ACN6 with Ryzen 5800U) since i got it for a really, greally good price. I first looked into the Yoga Slim 7 (14ARE with Ryzen 4700U), but as i'd have paid pretty much the exact same for both machines, i didn't want to settle for the lesser screen and performance of the Yoga Slim 7. I don't need the longer runtime as i usually work with power connected. What i absolutely do need though is working with 2 external HDMI monitors! I hope i won't experience the same issues as you with this, since my hope is that if using a docking station with power-trough, it might give a more stable connection. So, please, wish me a luck ;)
Let me know how your setup with USB C dock works!! I had no problem on my USB C monitor. Only on monitors that require power and monitor signal. I just recieved a thunderbolt docking station and pretty stoked to see how that will work, not on the amd models though...
@@w2best I will. Strange that it actually has issues with monitors that already have sufficient power delivery via their own powerbrick then, doesn't make much sense, does it? I use two pretty normal Acer 1080p monitors via HDMI, so we'll see how it goes. I considered the Intel variant for that exact reason (TB) for a split second but i think AMD has an advantage performance-wise.
@@w2best I first tried it with a no-name 11-in-1 USB-C dongle from Amazon that only let me mirror the 2 external monitors. I then switched to an 8-in-1 solution from Anker which i just tried and works without any issues :)
@@w2best by the way i forgot to thank you for the amazing review. It helped a lot choosing the laptop. Maybe they fixed the port issue. It was a big downer. I was happy it worked on my setup.
My Ideapad 5 pro Lenovo 14" screen went black in use. 🤨 I could not get it back. Shop(big seller with many shops) said they will replace it and they had not encountered it before in their sales.😒
Thanks for the video! Quite funny that you very often review exactly this laptops that I’m eying. How’s the bottom lid on it though? I recently sold my Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro, which seems to have very similar chassis, especially on the bottom side. It has extremely thin bottom plate, so every time I was grabbing it it was bending and flexing, making some noise too. I had it repaired but due to how thin it is, the issue came back in a short while. I’ve seen other people complaining about this too. Thanks!
Oh, I used the yoga slim 7 pro for the past 7 months and never had that issue once. Never disturbed by it at all... Strange that we have so different experiences.
Great, I was looking for this type of review for this laptop. I like the specs and all and it’s perfect for my budget. But please suggest if I should go for this considering the low bezel quality. I hope it doesn’t bother much? Please suggest
Maybe there are new drivers to solve the usbc problem? But I don't understand your problem correctly: if you plug in a external powered monitor via usbc it does not work?
Thank you for the reviews. I'm planing to go for the Ideapad Pro 16 version with Ryzen 5600H/16GB/GTX1650/1TB (750€) because of the larger screen size. Have you had any issue with the temperature with the 5600H CPU?
I am mostly worried about the QC issues. The rattling track pad issues and hinge issues that lenovo has had in many of its laptops worry me.That pushing down on the bezel thing seems a little worrying as well. I am considering the Acer Swift X, but I feel like that is overkill for my use case. Do you think I should just take the jump and buy the IdeaPad 5 pro? Are there any issues you notice with the hinge now?
I didn't keep this one because it didn't fit my use cases with mobile monitors. But since warranty policies are pretty solid i wouldn't be too worried. It's a good machine all in all at an amazing price!
Hello sir. Thanks a lot for the effort. Just wanted to know one thing. Is the screen a matte one with a diffuser layer laminated over it or does it have a Anti glare coating which wears off easily?
Hi Jonas, just got my unit today thanks to your review. All looks good, no real quality issues, except that the trackpad feels very plasticky and a bit loose, especially on the right side. On my old dell XPS 13 the trackpad is really solid. Is yours solid all over or also quite flexy on the sides? If it is solid, I would consider asking for a replacement unit.
My trackpad is solid on the ideapad. A bit better than on my Yoga Slim 7 Pro. In general this is a bit of a gamble I find. It's hard to know if you'll get a better unit in exchange...
I just purchased the 16" version of this laptop and suprisingly it should outperform the 14" in a lot of areas. - the CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 6600HS Creators Edition (although in CB23 I only got 10165 points. Weird.) - the RAM is 6400 Mhz - the SSD benchmarks at 6300/4800 (PCi Gen4) - the Wifi card is the same, and it indeed throttles sometimes, even under normal usage (browsing youtube etc). Ookla Speedtest measures great (880 mbits on my gigabit network) though. At the same time the touchpad is a bit rattly as you mentioned with your Yoga Slim7. Is there any solution to this?
I LOVE your reviews and appreciate your advice. I'm having a hard time deciding between the Ideapad 5 Pro with a Ryzen 5600U, 512GB SSD, 2.2k screen, and wifi 5. Or the IdeaPad 7i Slim Pro with i-7 11370h, 1TB SSD, 2.8k screen, and Wifi 6. The price difference is only $200 USD. What should I consider when making the decision between the two?
Oh, the 11370h is a hard case. In my ideapad 5 pro 16" it was totally overheating. I think the 5600u is a better CPU although lower watt. If you don't need thunderbolt you should be good with the ideapad :)
Hi, I recently bought the Ideapad 5 pro 14", too. In your video you say the trackpad does not make any rattle sound. when i started setting up my Pad, i noticed that the sound of the trackpad is quite loud when i tap in the bottom area of the trackpad, more than i’m used to from other models. It even makes a rattling sound when i'm just slightly touching it without pressing it down. do you think this is an error and I should send it back in? thanks for a response.
I always say, the thinner laptop you buy the more throttling you will get. There is just a things that cant be change. The less place you have the less heat will be taken out. The more bulky it is the better it will handle the thermals.
I found an AMD version of the Yoga Slim 7 Pro with the similar screen as this laptop (Anti-glare, 60hz, 2.2k). Do you think this should help give it much more battery life than 2.8k 90hz screen?
Hello. This is a great review! I would like to ask you a question: I am in doubt between this IdeaPad 5 Pro and the ThinkPad e14 Gen 3 with Ryzen 5 5500u. The ThinkPad comes with 8/256 GB, however, I can Upgrade both Ram and SSD easily to 16/512. Considering the upgrade cost, the machines will cost the same price. In your opinion which one is the best choice? Thanks in advance
For me the e14 was less interesting because I need the SD-card slot for editing. I do enjoy the upgradeability though. Double check what ports you need and don't skimp on the display options on the e14 and I'm sure you'll be happy! :)
Hallå eller! Thank you for a great review. I've been looking for a new replacement for my 7 year old Asus Zeenbook and this model seems to fit that spot quite well. I usually run Linux and from what I've read that work fine on this series as well.
Hi, Could you describe your experience installing any distro on it(if you bought it)? I am hesitant because I found couple of bad reviews (trackpad issues with linux on last year 4800u model) I am also looking forward to get a laptop with ryzen 7 to put Manjaro on it
@@bahonya98 I did not. I went for a Matebook 14 instead. Its a great piece of hardware and I thought it had good compatibility but it turned out that a lot of the newer models have sounds cards that arent supported in the kernel yet. I was sad to see that but it still work fine running Windows.
I just need to buy this laptop, the only thing keeping me away is that the battery life is 6-6.30 hrs only. Keepjng in mind this is an ultrabook this should have atleast 7-8 hrs. But, you have mentioned 8hrs+ battery life. Please, do reply me a real life battery backup.
Can you suggest which one will buy Acer swift x with same specs or Asus ZenBook or this model or any other budget Ultrabook You advice will be highly appreciated 🙏
Hello! Can you let us know if you got that USB-C-external screen connectivity working? What can be the workarounds? Thanks for the great review! Bought it.
With a mobile monitor - no. Because of this reason I didn't keep it since it's one of my main use cases. The workaround I found was using displaylink - then it worked fine over the usb A ports :)
Does the screen have any backlight bleed issues? i just got mine yesterday and its quite noticeable at high brightness. Wondering if its worth replacing.
I think the 16" version makes no sense. If you can buy the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus at the same price there's no reason to go for the 16" Ideapad imo... So I recommend 14" of this machine.
@@w2best What did you not like about 16" version except price? I mean, if we find it at a reasonable price, you still do not recommend it? If so, why? Thanks.
Wonderful review! Was there ever a solution to the portable monitors not working over USB-C? I just ordered this laptop and will be using it with a portable monitor, and it would be unfortunate to need additional power for the display :( Edit: It looks like it works for some people, so hopefully I am lucky!
I received the laptop and sure enough, the USB-C to my portable monitor does not run it with one cable. What is weird is that even with extra power the monitor won't stay on. The only way I could use it a portable monitor is with HDMI and external power :( I have the model with the 5800u and mx450 for reference. I don't know if I can keep this thing. It's so strange and it was the only reason I sold the laptop, It would have been my fav otherwise. It doesn't make sense why it doesn't work :( :( Sorry to hear you also have it. I would try with a displaylink monitor though, that should work.

Can i get some feedback on the noise of the fans? Im studying engeneering and i would to take it with me to the library and not sound like if i were playing a triple A game with ultra settings.
Hey man I need your help, I just bought the intel model with mx450 graphics and all the four cores heat up to 60 degrees celsius while surfing web, zoom with the gpu turned off. Is it a product defect or is the intel model just like that?
Hello, I purchased ideapad 14 5 pro AMD. It frequently gets shut down while it is locked or away. Do you have any solution? Is it a hardware issue? I ran lenovo hardware diagnostics and it doesn't show any issue.
If anyone knows and could please tell me, which laptop would run cooler, the ideapad 5 pro 14" with ryzen 5 and dGPU or the 16" with ryzen 5 and dGPU (which has a double fan system)? Also, between ryzen 5 and ryzen 7, which one gets hotter with multitasking?
I think you got wrong ryzen for the 16". The more fans the better usually, but if you aren't using 100% of cpu power WHILE the dGPU is working, I wouldn't worry for the cpu having more cores ( it's way better to limit the power than buying less cores)
im considering this laptop with r7 5800u and mx450 2gb. will mx450 2gb run premiere editing a video (3 to 5 minutes, full hd, granding and some simple effect)

Keep the good work, we really see you did a real long term use review. Too ofter reviewers use the laptop for 2 days and give their opinion based on this…
Great work, and thanks for checking the coil whine!
Thank you! I'm very happy to hear this! I'm just going to start a new review project! :)
very good review! Most reviewer does not put their use-case testing in the review. You did a great job!!
Thank you! I agree and I don't really understand why. I think my use cases are what I can share of value, and hopefully some of them are relevant to your use cases...
I want to buy this laptop for 2 months now! Can't find a better review than yours! Thanks a lot from Holland 🇳🇱!
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you like it!
How is the laptop?
Tjena!
WOW! This is was exactly what I was looking for! I'm really considering this laptop. With Radeon Graphics, Ryzen 5 5625U, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home.
My most consern is noise when just doing daily tasks etc. It's on sale atm for 650$ whole mars.

Hi, thanks for recommending me Yoga Slim 7 AMD, as always your videos are much informative and appreciate your efforts
first video I watched of your channel , every second of it was extremely satisfying , the word "review" in the title carries it's weight in this video , so much discipline and dedication deserves more subscribers than just my own
thanks so much for this comment! :)
i really love your reviews and how you go to the effort to cover everything and i mean everything. its hard to find reviews on tech that give you all the nessessary information so thank you!
Thank you! I'm happy to to help! Wish i could do it more but time and budget are limited.
Just wanted to let you know, since your channel is the only one who did an in-depth review.
thanks, man! you just made my life easier. now i know what to buy later... more power to u, dude!

One of the best review of all kind for me. Thank you! I am surprised how it runs so cool even under 100% work load. Does no thunderbolt means that it cannot be connect to a qhd 144hz monitor or higher?

Thanks a bunch! I really appreciate this comment! :)
Thank for your vid. Your review is really good.
Really good detailed review.

I have just ordered this laptop & will receive it tomorrow..hope it will go well 😜
Hope you like it!! :)

Excellent review Jonas! I think the amd version is what i want. Even though in india its the intel i5 variant is already for sale, il wait for the amd or find it in the us

@@w2best thank you, I am sure I will enjoy it after buying it
Thanks for your review. Going to buy an IdeaPad 5 Pro and a pack of i5 1135g7 and mx450 or ryzen 7 5800u choices. The price is the same. I can't decide which is better. I would like to hear your opinion.
I would for sure go i5 mx450. The graphics power will be a lot better in this setup.
Nice review
been using the 5800 2.8k version of this laptopt. it's quality
It's nice but also quality control issues...
@@chico3517 Will it work with a lunadisplay adapter?
@@jaumebosch8348 Really can't say since i never used Luna Display but according to the requirements i can’t see any reason why it should not
I bought this laptop with this specs. Portable external monitor works out of the box on usb c ports. Tested on asus zenscreen 16.5 inch. OS: Manjaro
that's great! For me it didn't work whatever I did therefor I ended up returning it.
@@w2best by the way i forgot to thank you for the amazing review. It helped a lot choosing the laptop. Maybe they fixed the port issue. It was a big downer. I was happy it worked on my setup.
This answers two of my top questions about this laptop. Thank you Paul :)
If the monitor needs both power and displayport it won't work...
@@w2best thanks! Great review by the way
@@w2best Right....this one must be the worst I've ever had. I'll compare it with my son's yoga slim 7 of last year. Thanks for the information!
I just purchased the 16" version of this laptop and suprisingly it should outperform the 14" in a lot of areas.
- the CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 6600HS Creators Edition (although in CB23 I only got 10165 points. Weird.)
- the RAM is 6400 Mhz
- the SSD benchmarks at 6300/4800 (PCi Gen4)
- the Wifi card is the same, and it indeed throttles sometimes, even under normal usage (browsing youtube etc).
@@w2best totally makes sense! I will actually miss the hdmi and don’t really need the thunderbolt.
Wow. It's a Great Review. Umm I have a question. Is that laptop doesn't have mx450? (sorry, i'm not good at writing english)
No this SKU is withoute dedicated gpu, there are other ones with mx450.
It depends how disturbing you find it. My yoga Slim 7 pro does that and i have been pretty fine still. :)
Watching this after ordering wish me luck guys
edit: thermal throttling happens but it's a notebook not a gaming laptop.
I always say, the thinner laptop you buy the more throttling you will get. There is just a things that cant be change. The less place you have the less heat will be taken out. The more bulky it is the better it will handle the thermals.
perfectly review. do you fixed problems with usb-c? that feature really impotant for 14" notebooks

a man connected this laptop to a portable screen and everything works for him
I found an AMD version of the Yoga Slim 7 Pro with the similar screen as this laptop (Anti-glare, 60hz, 2.2k). Do you think this should help give it much more battery life than 2.8k 90hz screen?
I think battery life of the amd 60hz should be much better than the one I have, 2,8k 90hz Intel.
I was just wondering if you have tested the windows surface laptop 4, Lenovo yoga 7i and this ideapad 5 which would be best all around? Thanks
great video thank you

Let us know if you resolve the USB port issue. That is something I would be somehting I would be interested in learning about as well. Thank you!

I am hesitant because I found couple of bad reviews (trackpad issues with linux on last year 4800u model)
I am also looking forward to get a laptop with ryzen 7 to put Manjaro on it
@@bahonya98 I did not. I went for a Matebook 14 instead. Its a great piece of hardware and I thought it had good compatibility but it turned out that a lot of the newer models have sounds cards that arent supported in the kernel yet. I was sad to see that but it still work fine running Windows.

With a mobile monitor - no. Because of this reason I didn't keep it since it's one of my main use cases. The workaround I found was using displaylink - then it worked fine over the usb A ports :)
Is this laptop good for learning graphics, video and animations like PS , PR and blender
Does the screen have any backlight bleed issues? i just got mine yesterday and its quite noticeable at high brightness. Wondering if its worth replacing.
Mine also had backlight bleed but not visible at regular use. Do you see it in normal daily use?
@@w2best Thank you for your work, but it would have been nice to mention it in the review, it is an important flaw for some of us.
Would you recommend the 14" version (with the ryzen 5 instead) over the 16" version (also with ryzen 5)?
It's such a nice laptop otherwise..
It's so strange and it was the only reason I sold the laptop, It would have been my fav otherwise. It doesn't make sense why it doesn't work :( :( Sorry to hear you also have it. I would try with a displaylink monitor though, that should work.

Hello, I purchased ideapad 14 5 pro AMD. It frequently gets shut down while it is locked or away. Do you have any solution? Is it a hardware issue? I ran lenovo hardware diagnostics and it doesn't show any issue.
Hello I just want to ask what is the difference of Ideapad and Ideapad Slim? For example Ideapad 5 Pro and Ideapad Slim 5 Pro
Can you please compare IdeaPad 5pro and Dell Inspiron 15 5518 and tell which one to choose?
im considering this laptop with r7 5800u and mx450 2gb. will mx450 2gb run premiere editing a video (3 to 5 minutes, full hd, granding and some simple effect)
