- I'm going to take Skyliner and Narita Express from Narita Airport to Tokyo and compare what kind of advantages they have.
There are more options like Airport Bus and Narita Sky Access Train, but I only focus on the fast trains in this video.

Japan in a nutshell. A bunch of us took the Narita Express to Tokyo. We were getting our things organised since this was our first meeting together. I left a folder in the seat pocket with my JR Pass voucher in it, along with foreign currency that was given to me by two of my friends. Basically, my vacation was in that folder. We were out of the station when I realised what had happened. We ran back down, and they were prepping the train to send it back to Narita. They let us look. No luck. Gone. The manager asked the cleaners and one of them had found it and set it aside. She refused to take money and one of my friends said to bow very deeply and showed me how to say a very profuse thank you very much. Boy, did that have an effect.
I lost my JR Pass while carrying a mikoshi in Otsuka in 2015. Freaked out, scoured the neighborhood. And like you, I got INSANELY lucky when I resident found it and turned it into the police. "Only in Japan" doesn't begin to describe how my brain processed that.
Normal, that's just Japan being Japan. Your folder will be lost in any other countries but Japan.
That's why I NEVER put anything in those pockets. I'm too forgetful. I'm glad you got everything back.
I lost my watch at the hotel in kanazawa, within 24 hours the hotel will notify me if my watch is found. unfortunately i was already on the plane to go back to my country. finally the hotel sent it back to my house,, its crazy 😭
Once I left my phone on an ANA flight from the states, didn't realize until we had arrived at the hotel. Shot ANA an email, turns out they had it, and they mailed it to us. Never had a bad Japanese service experience
For those trying to decide between the JR Narita Express and the Keisei Skyliner, here are the key differences:
JR Narita Express
+ Accepts JR Rail Pass.
+ More accessible stops such as Tokyo, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. Also very convenient for those staying in places outside Central Tokyo such as Yokohama, Hachioji, or Ofuna.
- More expensive than the Skyliner (if you don't have the JR Rail Pass).
- Slower than the Skyliner.
- Ikebukuro and Omiya stops have been discontinued.
Keisei Skyliner
+ Cheaper than the Narita Express.
+ Faster than the Narita Express.
- Not as user-friendly as the Narita Express. Only main stops are Nippori and Keisei-Ueno. Tourists staying in Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, etc. are advised to stop at Nippori and transfer to a local train or subway. Transferring from Keisei-Ueno is more challenging due to its longer walking distance from the JR Ueno Station.
I love all the small but practical information you include in your videos, like if there are outlets on the train, if you can get transfers, and how long it takes to walk between terminals.
Absolutely agree!
"Do you want to walk this far without eating curry?"
Had me in stitches 🤣🤣🤣🤣
im addicted to these videos, its becoming a problem
We will form an anonymous group and do 12 steps... I'm sure there's lots of us
Its not a problem, I can stop anytime i want

Love seeing those different trains over there from Scotland, UK. my dream would be visiting Japan and trying out them trains, especially the Shinkansen
Thank you so much for this. Literally booked a flight from LAX to NRT yesterday, so this is synchronous timing.
We usually use the Narita Express on our trips, because we generally stay in the Ikebukuro area. Some of the Narita Express trains go there... or at least they did before the pandemic. That keeps us from dragging a bunch of suitcases from one train to another... and also keeps us from inconveniencing a bunch of other people by dragging those suitcases onto the Yamanote line. 😅
i find it soothing watching all ur clips..makes me feel I'm travelling in Jpn together..pls keep posting!!👍👍
Thanks for taking us with you! It is always interesting to see how there's so many ways to get to and from the airport. Here you either go by car, or by bus. And you really don't want to go by bus...
The terminals, tracks, and trains are so clean and well kept! Also, it seems the trains on this channel sound and run smoother compared to the trains here in America. Even Solo's meals look tempting & interesting!
I've used both but mostly Skyliner as I stay in Ueno for my trips.
I miss Tokyo. Thank you for the videos. Greetings from the Dominican Republic.
I used to take NEX for years but changed to the Skytrain for the last 5 years prior to 2020
N’EX is more bumpy than the smooth Skyliner (because the Skyliner goes on straight high speed track). If you just want to get to Tokyo, the Skyliner is better in every way and cheaper with the Metro Pass package. The N’EX is easier if you need a direct transfer to Shinkansen.
well said!
I've tried both. I think skyliner is better. Been JR fans since my first coming to Japan, but this time Skyliner outright beats Narita Express. Even Haruka is much better than Narita Ex
My flight to Manila from Narita was cancelled and I had to stay in the city overnight until I flew out the next morning. It had been four years since I last visited the country and man, dis I miss the organized chaos of its train stations! Even if I was hella tired from my longhaul flight, I loved every bit of getting lost in Japan, even if just for a night. I hope I get to take another trip there, the right way this time. Hands down, one of the best places I've ever been to.
If I ever get to Japan, your videos will definitely help me to get around more easily. Thank you 😊!
As someone whose ridden both before, the Skyliner is great for getting to Tokyo the fastest, looks, feels and runs great. It’s one of the fastest non Shinkansen express trains in Japan. Also has a lot of runs so if you miss one I think the next is only 40 minutes after. NEX is good too but really if you only need those select stops that it stops at like Sakura (Chiba) or past Tokyo like Yokohama and Ofuna then it becomes okay.
Do u think it’s possible to arrive in Narita at 6pm and then rush to take tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto on the same night?
Skyliner like Godzilla
This is a very useful presentation, but I was sort of surprised that there wasn't a fabulous curry meal at the end of the eight minute walk. 😁 Thanks again for showing us the various means of travel, and stay safe.
This video is helpful. I was just in Japan 2 weeks ago and took the Narita Express to Shinjuku, however Google Maps gave me horrible instructions. I overheard the instructions on the train on what to do but in my jetlagged state I panicked and followed Google Maps instructions to exit early and transfer to the Marunouchi Line. When I tried to transfer, it gave me red lights. Being more awake, I realized my mistake and tried to go back to the NEX, but it had just left. I ended up using a fare adjustment machine, exited and then used my Pasmo card to take the Maruouchi line to Shinjuku. I noticed in general Google Maps wasnt as reliable as when I last visited in 2019.
Google Maps are good only in terms of its cartography.
Haha! I dislike facing a wall, too.
Thanks for the tour! :)
Great video to see the trains! I just used the limousine bus to and from Narita. It is the cheapest option, travels at the same time and you don't have to worry about your luggage. Incredibly efficient!
I was just on the narita express 2 days ago so this video made me smile by reminding of the memories I had riding the train 🥰 It was a wonderful experience!
Such helpful information for Narita connections! Thank You so much!!
Thanks for this video! I've always preferred the Keisei Skyliner as I like to stay in Ueno and the Skyliner stops there which is always perfect for me!
Thanks for teleporting us and teaching two different ways to move from Narita to Tokyo.
The NEX train was the first train I rode when I went to Japan for the first time in 2016. So many memories.
I still have yet to ride the Skyliner, but I have done the cheap route of taking the Asakusa line a few times.
Maybe I'll try that on my next Japan trip(hoping to go in 2023). 😊
First train ever??
I once took the Keisei local train from Narita station to Tokyo. This was not so bad time wise-it was just that my luggage was awkward on what was a commuter train.
Love your videos . . . have watched them all. You would make a great tour guide. Narita countryside is nice to look at. Take care and stay safe.
Yeah
I love watching all your videos in japan. They are so interesting of your travels in japan.
These videos are so calming and addictive!
No snacks? Sheesh.
After the long walk between terminals, I was sure it was time for a 🍛 curry break! 😎✌🏼
Thanks for this video. It's been over 10 years since we visited Japan the very first time and took NEX from Narita Airport. Now we could look into an alternate route and research which is more economical. Hope to visit Japan next year and have been compiling some of your awesome videos!
You’re preparing us well for our future travels! I’m showing some of your videos to my mom, who will be travelling with me to Japan in March 2023.
The Narita Express looks like it goes to space! Great options for travel to and from Tokyo. Have you done, or will you do, Haneda as well?
Thank you for sharing those little anecdotes.
No ekiben... no curry... no Fuji...no sunrise... just traveling... im sad and hungry :(
Kidding - as always great video viewing how great mass transport in Japan looks like
PS. if You want to know, STJ looks after new comments every 20 min (some hours may differ) :D
Your videos are very helpful - thank you for putting them together for us!
Handy information! You had beautiful weather, if not an exciting travel route! 😎✌🏼
I just want you to know that I love watching your videos to relax, also watching them on Friday evening before I work all weekend helps remind me of my goals that I am working to save for, including some day hopefully spending some time in Japan. Thank you for the videos!
Really love the experience. How beautiful. Thank you! Appreciate this a lot!
It's very helpful and we also enjoyed the train ride 😄
I've only taken the NEX before. One time I got lucky to see the two trains connect in front of me. It's like Transformers!
One of the most interesting channels in existence…
They seem roughly similar compartment wise, but JR is alot more expensive it seems on a ticket by ticket basis.
I used Skyliner when i was in Japan, very accommodating and most convenient.

I love your channel and I'm working my way through your videos, they are entertaining and informative I'm learning so much. I enjoy the scenery very much. Love from Scotland 🏴 💗
Thank you for making this video. With your videos, we are always learning. I noticed your English is improving. You are definitely a teaching ambassador. Thanking you again. 😃
One... Super small thing... To note between the two, the Narita Express' train that they use is very noisy. They occasionally run a service from NRT to Kawaguchiko (near Mt Fuji) and having been on that ride I can say for that particular EMU, it's very loud.
Also the Skyliner has an excellent deal for foreigners where you can buy a subway pass in conjunction with either a one way or round trip journey which can really be cost effective when planning out a journey.
Thank you for video. Jus booked ticket from LAX to NRT today for April 2 2023.
I take Skyliner, except when I have a JR rail pass. Change at Nippori to Yamamoto line is easy. You can buy a through ticket for Skyliner to a JR station.
This might sound a little odd, but I prefer the Narita Express going INTO Tokyo, but always take the Skyliner BACK to Narita. No idea why, I just like the return ride on the Skyliner more.
Well, one need a Phd to understand all those companies... there is such a variety and options of transportation to and from the airport. Thanks for sharing!🚄👊
That's a complete exaggeration. A master's degree is sufficient.
@@WanJae42 😅✌🏼
When railroads started, they were private companies so there were overlapping, competing routes, just like airlines today. In most countries, particularly Europe, railways were nationalized by the government. Japan was in the process of doing so, but WWII happened and Japan was destroyed before they could finish the process. The government didn't have enough money to rebuild the railways alone, so private railways continued. Keisei Electric Railway, operator of the Skyliner, was one such private railway. Narita Express, run by JR East, is the descendant of the government-owned JNR network. JNR was privatized into the JR Group in the late 80's, due in part to severe Shinkansen (high speed rail) financial losses.
I just took the Sky Liner from Keisei Ueno to Narita last Saturday, I did choose my seat location via the ticket machine. It was pretty easy.
I only go for limousine bus which offers airport kerbside to hotel room baggage service, or Keisei limited express as it is much cheaper than either NEX or Skyliner and only 15 minutes or so slower.
Any recommendations for limousine bus company from NRT to Odaiba hotels? Thanks for the recommend.

@@tng2057 Thank you!
Ahh, this is so helpful, thank you! I’m going to Japan next month and am still undecided on how to get from Narita to Tokyo.
Thanks for taking us along.
Interesting. The last time I took the Skyliner it was both more cmfortable, stable, and cleaner (AND FASTER!)
than NEX. Wonder what happened the last few years.
still is!
public transportation in japan is very efficient and cultured it has its own culture that makes it famous and the good thing is that japan has started using and building more new trains for the needs of all the people of its country so there is no problem of noise and shaking and the price is good for what we buy
We are considering visiting Japan next year. We really have no idea what to expect. Thanks for the helpful video.
Please do a video guide for transferring between Narita and Hanaeda. I heard that Keisei line does a train which directly connect between HND and NRT but actually seeing it would be great 😃👍
My friend and I are planning on finally getting out to Japan in mid May (after Golden Week has ended, of course) and these videos have been invaluable to getting to know the lay of the land. They're so relaxing to watch, too. Love your channel!
I was so anxious to see the second tray for comparison, but it never happened 😭
Great video! Thanks for showing the 2 main options. I know there are other options but this gave some good insight on what to expect.
On my first trip to Japan I landed at Narita and took the NEX, I've been back several times, and plan to again this coming May. Every time I get the NEX and feel the joy being back.
If I ever land in Haneda I'm not sure how I'd feel 😆
Loved the video. Would have been great to see how to walk from K'sei tracks to JR for travellers that want to transfer. I think most tourists know about the N'EX routes, but few may take the Skyliner if they are planning to travel beyond Tokyo and it is a nice option, speed wise, if you want to go to Ueno or maybe even Shinjuku from Nippori.
Thanks for sharing! I’m planning also to travel solo,to,Japan next year!
Wait... you didn't say if you liked one more than the other. I've only ridden the Narita Express and it's quite nice, but that coming from someone who lives in a place that has mediocre train service. Getting off at Tokyo station and leaving is easy. It was not easy for me to find the correct platform when it was time to go back to the airport.
Going to be very useful to me as I fly into NRT on 25th of this month. Thanks.
Ahhh another day another trip. Thankyou Solo Travel San .
I took both, they were great!
Usually use either the Narita Express (NEX) or the airport bus to get from Narita Airport (Terminal 2) to Tokyo and vice versa. Have not tried the Keisei Skyliner. I like the security of the locks provided at the luggage area of the NEX coach.
I personally find the Narita Express to be more comfortable and convenient, not to mention it is covered by JR Pass.
You should have stopped for some curry rice. The bus took me 2 hours. The traffic was awful
Thanks for your time and effort. It’s helped me a lot !!
Thank you for the useful video
I was in Tokyo last week, been to Tokyo multiple times, my advice take the airport express bus it is cheaper, less of a hassle
I was today years old when I realized N’EX didn’t take a straight-ish path, and I’ve been to Japan twice.
The N’EX interior looks more modern than I remember.
Yeah, the Narita Express takes a pretty circuitous path and it's slower than the Skyliner but it covers a wider area
Narita is beautiful and the Express seemed nicer and newer than the Skyliner. Also, I didn't know there was such a thing as 'new rice' and you seemed excited about it so I will investigate.
You get some faith back when good things happen.
STJ thank you for another awesome video.
Thank you for the info! After 3 years, finally i have chance to go to Tokyo & Sendai next 2 weeks. Since pandemic your video give me a lots memories n ideas for my japan trip. from your video i should take Skyliner! I can’t wait to go Miyagi eat gyutan 👍
Thanks for saying that. Have a nice trip!
WOW‼️🇺🇸Would never have stuff like this 😂😂😂❤️Your video ✌🏼😃✌🏼
I didn't know there are free shuttles between the terminals! I haven't traveled in so long 😅 That's good to know!
I love your videos! Someday I would love to visit Japan. My grandsons love Anime and Manga, their favorite right now is Jojo and Demon Slayer to name a couple. Of course DBZ too. Thank you for sharing your beautiful country with all of on RUclips.
Thank you for the video and yes will be useful in the future
57 years ols. NEVER had a passport or desire to travel, BUT, you show me sides of a culture I want/NEED to discover for myself. The transport, food, culture, the whole thing. Tell me where to start?.
This was an extremely helpful video. This is my plan as well. I want to take the train into Tokyo when I arrive. You’re videos have been extremely enjoyable and a good service at time. When I take my vacation in Japan we must ride the rails together. It would be my honor to do so
Great tour, love that ding
I usually use the Limousine Bus as it drops you off directly at a wide range of hotels and any onward journey is easy.
Japanese trains? More comfortable and more room than the flight over!
Mad lad! But very much appreciated!
I just got back from Japan today and I already miss being there
سلام متشکرم از ویدیو جدید و ارزشمند جناب عالی

Love this! But i will definitely stick to airport bus to tokyo and from tokyo!! Its most convenient for me☺️
A Solo video without curry seems......wrong.....somehow.
Wow! So helpful! I always take NEX or Airport Limousine, I didn’t know Skyliner is actually faster, well, depends on destination though
2024 Mar now, N'EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket is 5,000 JPY
Another great tour!
