    This is the first video I have seen that showed wheelchair accessibility for travelers. My sons (who have traveled often to Japan) told me that I could never visit Japan because the country cannot accommodate wheelchair bound. I would like to see more of how Japan accommodates people such as myself. It is a dream of mine to visit.

    • @チンタマケ
      @チンタマケ 2 года назад +8

      It's not rare to see people on wheelchair getting on and off the train by themselves in the urban areas. You can ask the staff for assistance and they will set up a ramp for you free of charge with no reservation required. They will also help you get off at your destination. If you wish to go to a super rural area (i.e. unmanned station), you need to inform the railway company in advance.

    • @marysue4729
      @marysue4729 2 года назад +7

      Japan is becoming much more accessible. Most buses and trains in my area are accessible. Elevators to train platforms often have two doors, front and back, so there's no need to turn a wheelchair around, you can roll on and off in the same direction. Theaters and cinemas also have wheelchair seating, and shopping malls are accessible. Cultural sights like temples and shrines, because they are old, are more difficult to modify, but if you inquire they often have a ramp.

      Asian countries are funny. You'll find a lot of accommodations for certain types of disabilities, but not others. For example, look at the sidewalks in the video (8:25): there's a lot of tactile paving for vision impaired people. Another thing specific to Japan is special facilities in public toilets everywhere for those with ostomy bags (14:22 Japan has a high colon cancer rate). Wheelchair accessibility is difficult due to the lack of space in the country and old buildings, but yeah things have improved markedly over the last 10 years.

I could not imagine our local council opening up their probably subsidised municipal offices canteen to the public. Excellent cheap day out, I would very much enjoy doing that journey.
