  • In this video, I share a few surprises that I didn't expect after my surgery. Specifically, I talk about "phantom uterine pain,” struggles with vaginal packing, suprapubic catheter frustrations, and waking up to external perineum stitches (lots of them). This will be a useful video for anyone facing hysterectomy, pelvic reconstruction, an incontinence sling, or vaginal vault prolapse repair.

I had prolapse surgery with hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. I am surprised at the number of videos I have seen saying recovery and pain last days to weeks to months. I came home 24 hours after surgery and took ibuprofen twice the day I came home. No other pain meds. I had some cramps similar to menstrual cramps for 2 days, some spotting for 2 days, and occasional stinging at my incisions (my surgery was robotic). I was walking 2 hours after surgery and was up to 30 minute walks in 5 days (I had to hold myself back). I got permission from the surgeon to lift hand weights at 1 week and do some gentle yoga at 2 weeks. I was back in my jeans at 3 weeks. So, just wanted to let folks know it isn’t as bad for everyone. My friends who have been through it had me expecting a long, painful, difficult 6-12 weeks and I had none of that. We even had the same surgeon.

Hi Ellen. It sounds like you must’ve had a different type of repair than some of the others of us did. And a different type of hysterectomy. My hysterectomy was done, vaginally, and my repairs were all done with native tissue, which involved a ton of stitching on the inside. I did not just have a mesh sling inserted to hold up my organs, which is what many surgeons do. I also had perineal stitches on the outside and a suprapubic catheter for 10 days. If you went to a urogynecologist as your surgeon, that would describe the difference, but I’m not sure. I think that every woman’s surgery is different based on exactly what was done and the degree of their prolapses. It also completely depends on how their repairs were done. I had a very involved surgery, so I’m sure that’s why I had a longer recovery and more pain. I’ve also been told that age makes a huge difference, as younger women have many more nerves in that area. The nerves die off as women age.

@@personalprolapsestory I had two prolapses repaired along with a complete hysterectomy. I had robotic surgery and my organs were removed through incisions made in my vaginal wall. I did not have mesh - my bladder and vagina were stitched to my own tissue. I had level 4 prolapses. My surgeon is simply a gynecologist. He prepared me to expect a much more painful and prolonged recovery. Mine was so incredibly easy that I have had to force myself to take it easy so as not to compromise my internal healing. I have never seen or heard anything about nerves dying but I will definitely ask my surgeon at my next appointment in 2 weeks. I know from watching your (and other) videos that you had more issues. I just want to give women a positive, encouraging example.

I had pelvic reconstruction 1 month ago. I had cystocele, rectocele and enterocele, all native tissue repair. I expected to go home with a catheter and packing. I had neither. My bladder has been wonderful, and bowel movements much better if I stay on my fiber, but those outside stitches suck. Lol. My surgeon recommended the partial hysterectomy but I declined. He said it was a little "floppy," but otherwise well supported. So I'm likely going to end up having it removed in the future. But so far I'm happy with the results. Thanks so much for making these videos!

I am 9 days post op of extensive vaginal vault repair and hysterectomy surgery. It’s been a rough and bumpy ride, but the last 2 days I have had improvement with reduction in pain and discomfort. My surprises were having to leave the hospital with an in and out catheter which I had to self administer, not easy when you are in a lot of pain and dealing with swelling. The other surprise was delayed bowel activity due to the anesthesia, pain meds and a sleepy colon. Let’s just say I never ever want to repeat day 5 again!! I was feeling very discouraged on day 7 but yesterday and today have been quite a bit better so I am feeling more positive again. Thanks for sharing your videos and providing info to help those of us going through this.

Hi Karen, I am so glad that you are finally over the hump with your recovery and feeling a little better! I remember that day for me as well. When you finally start to see the bright side. Although I hated having my super pubic catheter, I cannot imagine having to self catheterize. I’m honestly not even sure I could do that. So, you are a brave soul for taking that on. Ha ha. I agree that the effects of anesthesia are not good on the bowel system. I also struggled with this. Hang in there, and let’s hope that this surgery gives you a new lease on life and comfort!

You had a lot of damage going on so I'm not surprised about anything you have said. Ultimately, as long as you're better, that's what counts. I can't even imagine how uncomfortable you were before you had the surgery. I am 5 days post op with complete hysterectomy (including removal of ovaries) and cystocele and I have not experienced anything remotely close to what you're describing. Glad things are better for you now and you can move on with your life.

I had my packing removed a day after surgery by the doctor in the hospital. Also, I didn’t have much pain, more cramping than anything. I am six weeks post surgery and feeling good. Never really had a problem.

I’m glad your experience was better than mine. We must have had different surgeries/procedures. My packing remained due to my vaginal vault repair.

@@personalprolapsestory Hi. First I’d like to say you are a wonderful speaker and such a help to so many. I was glad to hear a few things from you that applied to me. Anyway, my surgery was to fix a bladder and uterus prolapse. My pelvic floor as you mentioned had weakened over the years, plus two births and constantly lugging around heavy gardening supplies😊. I still have my ovaries but my uterus was taken out. I don’t have the technical name in front of me for my procedure but let me know if that will help. Again, you are a delight and I hope you continue to get well and back to everything you love❤️

How do you know when you are at the end of pulling the packaging out? Is it just obvious? Sorry hope that is not too personal 😔

    • @personalprolapsestory

I’m not sure exactly what you are asking in this question, but I will address both things I think you might be referring to. I was told to remove my vaginal packing at seven days post surgery, so I knew exactly when I was supposed to do it. As far as the process of actually removing it, you essentially just keep pulling until there is nothing else that comes out. Finally, after a minute or so of pulling, there is an end to the rope. I had about 10 feet of packing inside my vagina. I am not exaggerating!!!

Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate the help, I was just worried thinking oh god what if I end up having that done with the packing and I won’t know when it is all out 🤔 just my anxiety I think! My appointment came through this morning to see the consultant at the women’s hospital in the city near me which I am thankful for after so long waiting 🙏🏻
