This was me. Full abdominal hysterectomy to remove a 1kg fibroid 6 months ago. I was told it was the size of a 24 week fetus. Was in a world of pain for the first few days. Got the all clear 6 weeks post op and was back to caring for my disabled 12-year-old who has limited mobility. My husband did as much of the heavy lifting as he could but when he was at work it was up to me. I’m now 6 months post op and my mid section still feels a bit numb and distended. 😢 It feels like a long, slow road to recovery.
Best to work on any core and pelvic floor exercises to now help the nerves to connect to your muscles again. I have a recovery program for pelvic floor and core work to address this: www.level4pt.org/hysterectomy_recovery. It does take time, best wishes to you.
Walking approximately 1 to 2 hours is enough for me now, my surgery was I April 2024,so I'm taking my time at slow pace without running or heavy lifting . I basically only left 5 pounds as of August this year 2024. I will be watching and listening to you regularly. Keep us posted and thank you for calming us down with much explanation for for healing at a rate time.😊❤❤❤❤❤, USA
Wow what a blessing for you ladies! I’m on day 2 of laporscopic and I died of pain day and night of😢. Today is better but still in pain all day. Praying each day gets better.
I was the same way. I’m 35 and got a total hysterectomy. I would say the only thing that was uncomfortable was waiting for the gas that’s put in you to go away. Luckily I was warned before hand by a friend about it, if not it would have scared me but went away pretty quickly with gentle stretches and moving.
Recently had vaginal hysterectomy with major prolapse repair surgery 4 weeks ago and wanted to know how to go about beginning exercising it’s hard to find someone that is experienced in this area to do it correctly thank you so much for your help and guidance this was a wonderful video
What prolapse repair did you have? I have prolapsed uterus and my urogynecologist wants to put bladder sling mesh. I don't want the mesh they deteriorate causing more problems.
I’m just over 3 weeks post op I had a hysterectomy on 18th December 2023, removed the uterus, tubes and ovaries and I think the cervix. It was set to be Laparoscopic and it did start out as that but as soon as they got in the Surgeon had to cut through a mass of scarring and adhesions to even see the uterus. I’ve always thought I had endometriosis and I’m sure that’s caused many adhesions plus in 1996 my appendix burst with Peritonitis and Gangrene and I had no antibiotics after the surgery. I quickly found I had massive adhesions which fused my bowel, bladder and uterus together and in 1999 I had my first laparotomy to strip them out, from navel to pubic bone. So back to this December just gone, the surgeon stripped out the adhesions, removed all the hysterectomy bits and just as he was about to close he noticed a small perforation of the bowel. So a General Surgeon was bleeped and I had my second laparotomy he spent several hours stripping out a complete mass of adhesions and scarring and they checked every inch of the bowel to ensure there was no other wound. I came round in the recovery suite to a sea of worried faces looking down at me. They told me what had happened briefly but because I was only at a gynaecology unit they needed to transfer me by ambulance to the nearest major hospital to Critical Care. The Paramedics took great care and said I wasn’t to worry but they would be going fast and on blue lights and sirens. I must have looked worried because the nurse who was coming too said, oh don’t worry they’re just doing that because it’s rush hour. Rush hour? I went into surgery at 12oclock lunchtime… I’d had a 5 hour surgery . I spent 5 days in Critical Care and then two days on the ward before coming home in time for Christmas. 10 days post op the District Nurses came to take the staples out.ll I lost count after 25! Unfortunately the wound started to open up a bit and was oozing rather a lot. I already knew I had a urine infection as I have bladder problems and often get infections so knew the signs. They felt the wound might be infected but it needed looking at in case it needed stitches. The Gynaecologist I saw felt it was ok to leave it alone but to be redressed and checked daily by the District Nurse and they’d see me in a week. The one thing I was struggling with was opening my bowels, I have IBS so it’s often a struggle but they said use the La I do sachets we don’t want you straining at all not even a bit. So I’ve been taking a sachet a day nd was going nicely but for some reason I’ve not been able to go now since Tuesday night when I last went. I’ve tried all my usual tricks, glycerin suppositories eating chocolate, using my “squatty potty step”….it’s usually great at working I recommend it to anyone you can get it from Amazon! Nothings working the Nurse today suggested taking two sachets which I’m a bit loathe to do as it can give you tummy ache and I’ve got enough of that right now. If anyone else has struggled like this and has any tips I’d be grateful, right now I’d stand on my head if I thought it would help!!
Oh my word you poor thing. I've always found pure prune juice a godsend. Maybe a bit late now! I try and get the very natural one with no artificial sweetners, it's normally enough to get things regular. Gosh I hope you are doing OK after all you've been through. Xx
@@Julie-netball hi, thank you for your good wishes and advice. I’m doing ok the wound is mostly healed now apart from the piece in the bikini line, it was the bit which opened up the most so it’s taking a while to heal. Thanks for the Prune juice tip! I’m not a lover of the juice but I’ve been chomping on dried prunes which I don’t mind and of course chocolate always works😉and I’ve also got Malt bread which I really enjoy and I’ve always found bananas help too, a lot of people say they will bung you up but I find the opposite. Monday the District Nurse came and put the Urethra catheter in until I’ve healed enough to have a Suprapubic one…. I should have been going for the Pre op this Thursday but I’ve postponed it for now to give my body time to recover.
@@sarahyates6055 I'm glad things are working OK, it's always good to find the best foods for yourself, I must say the malted bread is always good! Take care and best of luck with your next procedure, and a speedy recovery. Xx
So sorry to hear what you’ve been through. I had mine 4weeks ago and they also found adhesions I was in theatre for 4hours and lost 1.6Litres of blood. My bladder felt weird afterwards but squatting whilst peeing has helped me empty my bladder and taking lemon, in my morning herbal teas have helped with the bladder feeling better. I hope you get better soon. I also have a video where I shared my surgery. ❤️🩹
Thank you so much for your time and input! I am three weeks in recovery after laproscopic hysterectomy. Dealing with a very complicated uti and on the second course of antibiotics. After surgery I have had really bad nausea and finally today I got some Zofran until I can get over this recovery. Looking forward to being able to meditate, do yoga, etc on my yoga mat. I am a manual wheelchair user and my health is very complicated. I wish you all the best.
I am scheduled for a vaginal hysterectomy in 3 weeks. I getting in the gym before to increase muscles in hopes of a better recovery. I have several prolapses and need to diligent on my pelvic floor. Thank you for sharing your professional know.
I'm looking for the limitations for mom activities like: At how many weeks post-off can a mom take the risk of needing to run after their toddler who darts off in the parking lot? when can she push a shopping cart with 80 pounds of kids and groceries? When can she go on a 4-mile hike with hills, etc? How can she lift a laundry basket without popping her ligaments that were just sewn back on? What exercises are best prior to a hystorectomy?
I’m 2 months post op from an open abdominal hysterectomy. I’ve been cleared but I’m so nervous. I still don’t feel 100%. I want to start doing something light to build up my stamina and energy again.
Me too, it's been 2 months now. my doctor told me not to excercise yet, for the next 2months, and not do anything that increases pain- for example not to bend forward, if I need to pick something, just squat delicately with my back and belly straight. I'm advised to walk a lot, especially in nature or a park. That's the only "exercise" im allowed to do. I'm healing well but I still feel pain here and there constantly and discomfort. I still can't sleep on my side - it feels everything is moving inside, so its only comfy on my back. I think I overdid too early by doing some chores at home or maybe my body is very delicate. Its worth considering that after hysterectomy intestine has more space so everything needs to find its new place inside.
@@bhavnatailor8888 No, I don’t think I had any muscle symptoms after the operation. Just sore around the cuts, bloating, where i drank Metamucil to have regular bowel movement etc. If you’re still having the pelvic pain, are you taking pain killers or else you can seek advice from the doctor if the pain persist. Maybe you just need to have more rests. It will take sometime to heal. Good luck with it.
I had a robotic hysterectomy done 6 days ago with a small c section. I don't understand how I am experiencing intense pain in both of my arms. I am in such extreme pain that is driving me crazy!! I don't understand how both of my arms hurt this much and not pain at all in my abdominal area where the surgery happened. It is so awful that I take pain meds for the surgery, and my arms pain doesn't go away.
It could be the gas they blow you up with. Not to scare you but I know someone who ended up with massive cancer after a robot assisted surgery because of how the robot throws cells around inside as it's chopping up the uterus to get it out. It may be rare but please get yourself checked out regularly.
Thanks for sharing, nice tips. I did a full hysterectomy 6 weeks ago. i dont feel 100% yet to exercise and i dont need painkillers either. However, my body is stiff an achy so i need to start more movement soon.
Yes, stiff and achy is your body's way of recovering. Light movement with pelvic floor and core exercises, plus walking is super helpful! Check out my program here that can give you some simple ideas on exercises to do: www.level4pt.org/hysterectomy_recovery. Best wishes with your recovery!

Great video! Hello I had an LAVH 4 weeks ago. I have been walking on the treadmill since day 2, and gradually been increasing the time of my walks. I understand everything that you have mentioned. I would like to know what you think about walking with an incline. I am trying to make walking (since that is the only activity that I can do) a bit more challenging without causing any injury.
Great Question! Gradually increase to your tolerance as everyone is going to be different asking this question. Signs to stop or dial back is pain or pressure/heaviness in the lower pelvic region or feeling uncomfortable. Check out my program starting 8/5/22 with restoring your core and pelvic floor after C-section as that is most important when considering how to ramp up your cardiovascular activity! Hello Dr. Dawn! I just had a total abdominal hysterectomy on March 20th. But developed vesicovaginal fistula. I started walking for 20-30 mins , 3-4x a week since April 17th. Started upper body exercises without weights today. May I already reintroduce biking & yoga or pilates? But avoid the planks as you mentioned. Thank you for your highly insightful video! :)
Hello! Thank you for watching! If your doctor has cleared you for those activities, then light movement is great and nice job on the walking. My program does include a progression back to Pilates and Yoga type movements as they can be strenuous if your core and pelvic floor have not recovered. I'm 7 days into my hysterectomy and however mine was not made by choice as I had internal bleeding after having my son through ceasre operation. I had an abdominal hysterectomy. I'm still feeling pain on my lower back area where my uterus was removed. I don't know what to do to ease the pain. Need advise
I had a radical hysterectomy through big vertical incision. I mean big from pubic bone to about two inches above my belly button. I am six weeks post op and still not feeling great.
@@tamarastone141 take it slow. It’s a huge surgery. Several surgeries at once really! I am 10 weeks post op now and I feel ok but definitely not back to pre surgery pain levels still. I hope you heal quickly. Accept all help offered. And are surrounded by supportive people. We all deserve that.
How do you recover when your wheelchair bound? Any suggestions? I haven’t had mine yet because everyone talks about walking afterwards to reduce blood clots and I am a little hesitant to move forward.
Hi I’m not wheelchair bound but have limited mobility and in October 2022 I had multiple blood clots in both lungs so they knew I was high risk. I’m just over 3 weeks post op and as you’ll see on my post I had a 5 hour surgery with some complications. I was 5 days in critical care where I think I got as far as sat out in a chair for an hour one day but my blood pressure kept dropping really low so I was just in bed all the time, they kept the catheter in all the time as I have problems anyway and my husband has to catheterise me at home. I had heparin injections twice a day whilst I was in hospital and then for 28 days after I came home still twice a day, I’ve got o injections left to do. Obviously everyone is different but they showed me how to do them and they are easy enough. You can do them either in the stomach below the navel or in your thighs. The trick I’ve found is to push the plunger I slowly that way you don’t get that awful stinging feeling as it goes in and you don’t bruise as much. You will get a bit of bruising and of course you will bleed easily so you need to tell anyone that you’re on them before medical or dental treatment. The other thing is if it does sting don’t rub it to try and stop it, you actually make it worse and you’ll get a bigger bruise. I hope if you’ve had your surgery you’re doing well and if not then I wish you all the best. Despite mine being a bit of a horror story it was through no fault of the surgeons, they were amazing and the level of care I had was the best. I’m still glad I had it done there’s no regrets.
8:04 How about spinning on a stationary bike? My gym has recumbent bikes. As of the date of this post, I am eight weeks out of my hysterectomy with cervix, both fallopian tubes and both ovaries removed due to a large ovarian tumor that was benign. I was post menopausal when I had the procedure done. The technique my doctor used was the robotic assisted laparoscopic method. Thanks for your help. By the way, my doctor cleared me to start exercising again about 1 to 2 weeks ago at my last post op appointment.
Order a abdominal hysterectomy pillow, get a heating pad and some ice pack bags. Sleep in the recliner if you can, or if in a normal bed have a body pillow and many regular pillows to prop up. Also be sure to have someone to help you the first 4-5 days. Lay on your back, no side sleeping. I wish you many blessings. Eat plenty of fruit and veggies for a proper bowel movement, fiber intake is important ❤
What about for those that are obese? Is my weight putting extra pressure on pelvic floor? I just had a robotic hysterectomy with vag cuff and am terrified of it breaking open. I love running and was running 3x a week prior to surgery. It doesn’t seem to matter that I’m active because I have a lot of trouble losing weight so I basically exercise for the boost it gives me mentally and how my body feels. I’m just really nervous about doing anything here in 6-8 weeks when I am given the go ahead to start working out. I have been walking daily since surgery but only .5 mile a day.
I love that you want to return to running! It is important to work on the core and pelvic floor for strengthening and mobility prior to running after this surgery so it is more supported. Check out my program to help you...it will give you some great focus on these areas before getting more active: level4pt.mykajabi.com/hysterectomy-success

I am 68 and had abdominal total hysterectomy three weeks ago.but up till now am expiriencing brown blood spots. Please what could be the cause and l urinate quite often especially at night though l drink enough fluid..
IF the doctor removes the cervix it makes recovery to sport a bit more complicated due to the risk of prolapse of the intestines through the vagina. One of my biggest worries and paranoia was recovery and what I was able to do and when I could safely do things. Take it slow and easy, just because the doctor has cleared you doesn't mean you're free to return to exercise and rigorous sport. IS it safe to do abdominal strengthening core exercises a year post hysterectomy? OR is it something to just stay away from for life?
i would say everyone is different and you can try something called yin yoga which is long 5min poses on the floor before you try anything else at least thats my plan. and walking is just as healthy as running walking is a totally valid sport
Absolutely, you are using those exercises to perform your daily activities so you have to train them to support your bladder, your spine, and help you effectively move!
How long do I have to wait after a partial hysterectomy before I can suck my stomach in? I have been walking around with my stomach sucked in for over 20 years because it protrudes and I have looked 7 months pregnant since I was a child. Hey Dr. Dawn, just a question, when do you see patients start going back to regular planks and crunches? I had a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy two weeks ago and I know I’m no where near being able to start them, but I would like to know when people who were doing them every day before their surgery and who are quite active can maybe expect to start easing back into doing them again.

I don’t want my cervix removed. Nor laparoscopic.. I would rather have vaginal to remove uterus. She’s telling me because I have not had kids that it is not an option. Should I seek 2nd opinion? She is suppose to be best of the best in Austin.
I don't have kids either and my doctor is going to do my hysterectomy vaginally. However, she is removing my cervix to avoid cervical cancer in the future.
I'm pretty sure if you want to keep your cervix, you won't be able to do full vaginal. If you want to keep your cervix then laparoscopic, robotic and open. I could be wrong but double check.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy on 26th Dec 23. It's an open C-sections surgery (I've 2 C-sections) My uterus removed. Please tell me that after how many weeks or months I can exercise to reduce my belly fat.
Gynaecologist are doing hysterectomies for totally benign reasons. You do not need one for fibroids, cysts or heavy bleeding or endometriosis. They are on a mass castration programme 1 in 3 in USA alone. Disgusting. Hysterectomy is an atrocity to women on mass. Higher rates of osteoarthritis, pelvic nerve damage, depression, heart disease, wrecks body shape. Has she had one??? Cruel. Only required for confirmed cancer. But gynaecologist lie on mass for more clients. Research HERS Foundation to see the truth.

I had bilateral hysterectomy on the 1st March 2024, I’m resting at home, doing light exercises, hanging clothes, walking around the house etc.
Hi I had 2end March , I’m resting at home too and doing light exercise like you said. Do you still have heavy, sore pelvic muscles?
@@bhavnatailor8888 No, I don’t think I had any muscle symptoms after the operation. Just sore around the cuts, bloating, where i drank Metamucil to have regular bowel movement etc. If you’re still having the pelvic pain, are you taking pain killers or else you can seek advice from the doctor if the pain persist. Maybe you just need to have more rests. It will take sometime to heal. Good luck with it.
Thank you for your advice, I will check with my GP.
Did you have to use any pain medication ?
Yes!

I’m 7 days post surgery. I had a total including cervix done laparoscopic and vaginally. I am injecting blood thinners every morning for 2 weeks. I was doing well. Except for the gas pains! Only took pain meds day of surgery and for 2 days . I had also stopped bleeding after 2 days. Well, today, I started bleeding with abdominal pain that feels like severe cramps. The amount of blood is increasing, but not a crazy amount yet, but the pain is concerning. I’ve been very careful not to bend over, etc.. I’m a bit frustrated. If not better tomorrow, I’m making the call.
How are you doing now? What was the cause of the bleeding?
@@lovebug1180 Bleeding can be normal for weeks just as long as it’s not an excessive amount. Turns out that I had a severe uTi more than likely from the cystoscopy.

I will under go a total hysterectomy in 10 days. I am preparing myself and would love all the info possible.
After total hysterectomy (TABHSO) how many months we can lift heavy things.
I was told no lifting over 10 pounds for 8 weeks.

Have you had endometriosis and fibroids and heavy bleeding anemia?
