Doc, can you talk about these alternatives to Coffee ☕️ like Mushroom 🍄 Coffee? Are they Legit ???
I am 80 years old and have lost 73 lbs in the last four years by quitting bread and all high glycemic foods. During that time I also shed type II D, acid reflux, gout, high B/P and what seemed like bone on bone arthritis. My weight loss of two lbs a month has stalled now and I am being knocked out of ketosis every morning without consuming a single carb. You have presented the first sensible explanation I have found. Thank you. So many of our health problems seem to stem from inadequate information. You are doing great work with concise information. Thank you. Coffee is as addicting as carbs. I intend to face that addiction as squarely as I did the carb and bread addictions.
I also have gout. Limiting carbs was the key
Coffee knocks me out of Ketosis as well! I don't have diabetes or anything.
I've only ever drank black coffee with no sugar!
May I ask Sir , how can you tell you are knocked out of ketosis in the morning, obviously without a laboratory test ? I am new to low carb diet and shed 20 kilos
@@vasileioszafeiropoulos9114 There are ketosis meters that work exactly like glucometers. A fingerstick & a drop of blood.
Just exercise after your coffee to use up the rising glucose. You don’t have to be in ketosis 24/7. I also conquered type II,acid reflux, high B/P and joint pain through a ketogenic diet. They don’t come back even if I am not in ketosis 24/7. Exercise is truly the key to great health
I am 71 years old, and had diabetes for about 25 years. I also enjoy coffee, I regulary check my blood glucose, with glucometer. As long as there is no sugar or sweetener in the coffee, it does not cause blood sugar to go up. Just drink and enjoy the coffee as it is, don't add anything, including milk. I also now avoid carbohydrate consuption, in meals and drinks.
You are absolutely correct. I do the same. This guy is talking through his arse,
Caffeine can spike serum cortisol and cortisol is a glucocorticoid which promotes gluconeogenesis, so yes, unsweetened coffee can indirectly raise blood glucose levels.
Yes, I do the same! No problem! This guy should go and lecture sleeping kids in some college!
I can drink black coffee and still get a significant spike
@@robertstinson9792 same
Nothing quite as good as watching this video while sipping on a hot cup of fine coffee ☕️
😂😂😂😂
Yes🤤🤤
Hahaha 🎉
Ditto
I've been drinking plain black coffee for all my life. Every single day. My blood sugar readings are always perfectly normal according to the results of my annual blood work.
I think you may be speaking of coffee with adjuncts such as dairy and refined sugar.
There must be more in play here, not simply the caffeine, otherwise my blood sugars would be way off! 😀
I'm 65, almost 66.
Well good for you are you type 2 diabetic
There is no significant spike or no spike at all when i drink black coffee. I have checked it many times. I am type2 diabetic.
I believe he did say people vary in their responses. It's probable you are one of the fortunate ones who don't have a response so consider yourself lucky.
It depends on the individual. I just got a CGM and only found out today after drinking coffee my blood sugar level increased.
@@susansalazar4517… so, you don’t really grasp the comment you are responding to.
Dear Dr. Ergin: I was prediabetic at one time but after losing approximately 60 pounds, exercising and watching my diet, I've got my sugar under control. Before a meal, my reading is between 4.9 to 5.6 and after a meal it is between 5.2 to 6.0. I'll splurge once in a while! For Valentine's Day, I had Chinese food. Boy, it was YUMMY! I am working on my blood pressure. I REALLY ENJOY your channel and have learned a lot. Thank you for providing people with your IMMENSE WEALTH of MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE. Stay safe, take care and God Bless! 🙏
As a pre-diabetic, caffeinated coffee or tea used to have the opposite effect on me, especially if I drank a cup of coffee on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. My blood sugar would crash, causing all kinds of hypoglycemic complications, including lightheadedness, weakness, shakiness, sweating, extreme hunger, and anxiety. As soon as I would eat something, especially containing sugar, I would start to recover within minutes. One time after drinking coffee in a cafe during a long fast, I almost passed out and came close to going into a comma. It took my body about 3 weeks to fully recover from that episode. I stopped drinking coffee after that, but have recently started back on decaffeinated coffee.
That is I and caffeinated coffee. Now, I only do decaffeinated coffee occasionally.
Same here. Coffee reduces my blood sugar.
Exactly
I have replaced coffee altogether. I use a blend of Matcha, Cocoa and Heavy Cream powder and Monk Fruit sweetener. Roughly the same caffeine content as regular coffee with 1/2 the glucose response.
Thank you! I was sent down this rabbit hole after a patient had complained of this exact thing! They gave me some quality education about diabetes I was not aware of and now I can help them so much better during their stay =) I will give them the link to your channel.
Thank you, doctor. Just check my coffee, both my whole bean and my ground espresso blend are 100% Arabica. I will also drink more espresso. For non-espresso, I use a French press already, but I will drink my morning two cups right before or with breakfast. I will also try cold brewing. Just wanted to let you know that someone took your information seriously and benefited from your video!
That I you for the great info! I love coffee, and at 72 I,ve given up just about everything else I enjoy. I’m now buying only arabica . I use a Keurig machine like more and more Americans, which pods do you suggest?
Adding half and half or heavy whipping cream to my coffee seems to flatten that curve for blood sugar. Also, eating some protein and fat on an empty stomach first before having coffee with half and half also impedes that rise.
Thank you.
Same, and I sprinkle cinnamon in my coffee.
The reall information starts @5.55 !!!
Bless you!❤
Thanks Doc! This is so helpful to a coffee lover like me. God bless you and your loved ones! ❤️
Thank you so much for the great information. My husband and I are trying to reverse our pre-diabetes and grateful for your videos 😊
Thank you for watching our videos. Hope that you are learning as you watch.
Thank you for the preventative information doctor. You’re helping me dealing with my type 2 diabetes.
I am finding that at the end of my daily eating, that if I eat two tables spoons of chia seeds, by glucose level drop by around 20 points in the evening and morning.
Thanks for the run down Dr. What of taking my morning Coffee with Cinnamon? Will that have any effect on the sugar spike?
I try to limit my coffee to 1-2 cups a day and I use a 6oz cup to try to keep my serving sizes down. I also only drink black slow roasted dark coffees using only arabica beans. I will be getting my first lab results on Monday since being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes back in June. I'm hoping the results are good. The coffee is the only things I have struggled with because I sometimes forget to limit my coffee and drink 4-6 cups but that doesn't happen often.
Coffee is the least of your problems unless it’s making you more hungry
how about tea which i should be using
I was just about to ask about stress hormones on sugar levels when you answered it. My dad passed last year, and my mom is struggling with dementia and other health issues. My blood sugar levels elevated around that time and will not reduce, no matter what I do. Not sure how to reduce the stress of caring for my mom, but I had been considering various methods to reduce those hormones and see if I get some relief in my blood measurements.
May the Creator give you strength to continue to help your Mom. Hopefully, you have other people who can help you take care of your Mom.
My Father had dementia and I learned a lot. Currently, my sister has dementia. My husband and I are my sister care taker. We are extremely bless to have each other.
Be safe.
Have you tried Berberine, cinnamon clove with fennel tea? Or apple cider vinegar with lemon water. There are many ways to bring it down actually. Even bitter melon and goats rue has some results.
@@marcopolo5157 funny enough, I recently purchased a large bag of whole fennel seed. Never made tea of it.
I figured out part of my overall health issue is a histamine reaction. Seems there's a correlation between that and diabetes. Just what I needed. Antihistamines help, but don't fix root cause. When it rains...

I have been a diabetic since i was 24 years old, i am now 42. I quit coffee when i was 30 years old altogether. I did not drink it every day but when i did as when i would visit friends or my parents... It did me absolutely no favors. I still wont have it today. It jolts my blood sugar levels to spike and jump up and down throughout the day. And i just feel sick and ill. Plus it dehydrates me.
Here is the funny thing though. Green Tea actually helps me manage my blood sugar and make me feel at peace. I am no scientist and neither am i a doctor. Both Coffee and Tea contain caffeine. However, one is from a bean, the other is from a leaf.
I believe its got to do with how ppl's metabolism works.

It is a fantastic program. I will take your suggestion and see how it will work for me. I will be very happy to give my feedback on results after a few weeks of following your instructions. Thank you very much. Please have a good day.
Thanks Doc for the brew tips! My wife and I drink k-cup coffee w/half & half and Stevia sweetener! I have noticed my levels at check time to be 200+ at times so I will see about taking a fast acting first thing in the morning - only thing I worry about running low b-sugar before lunch as I rarely eat breakfast. Thanks again for the suggestions I may have to try something different!👍☕️
Please share your experiences afterwards!
Use heavy cream instead of half and half.Half and half is higher carb heavy cream is almost no carb. Much better for you.
As a type 1, I have issues w/ rising blood sugar after 1 cup. I will review the coffee & it’s contents. I have since changed up my mornings w/ hot ginger tea instead of coffee. Followed by Perfect blood sugar.
Thanks for this info!

Just checked my coffee bag.. 100% Arabica! NEW ENGLAND brand is my favorite. I don't have diabetes..yet...( strong family hx) I will now mix 2 bags- 1 decaf- now. Very informative. Never would have thought expresso or cold brew had less caffine.
Knowledge is power and feels good right? Thanks for your comment!
Thank you this was so helpful. I had no idea how coffee could spike my blood sugar.
I am a type 2 diabetic and consuming at least 3 cups (12 ounces each cup) of brewed Americano daily. But I am on low carb diet too and my FBS is commonly at 160. After hearing this, I will try to cut down my coffee intake to just two cups. Hopefully, I can go back to my usual 105 FBS reading, and the spike may only be 125 after drinking 12 ounces of my favorite brewed arabica.
Hey doc, what about cutting down on the amount of sugar and cream, it seems like that would help a lot. I know it did for me.
This was interesting. I am a coffee snob. I use custom blend small batch roast, light roast. I do just what you suggest and add in half decaf. I use French press and do use a coarse grind. I also only use decaf that is processed using the Swiss water method. . I do not like dark roast. I like nutty and fruity flavors. I don’t like instant coffee.
I also add a dollop of heavy whipping cream and Isopure zero. My glucose does not spike or rise with the above method.
So is decaf better?😊
What an education! Wish you had discussed the importance of decaf methods. I only buy Swiss water process to avoid the chemicals of other methods. Cold brew has a different taste and aroma and can easily be made at home and stored in the refrigerator. I always wondered why I got so hungry when I drank coffee..now I can blame my adrenals dropping from the rise of insulin. I hope I understood you correctly!
I'm a gonna start drinking decaf after listening to you. I'm not after the rush just the taste of coffee.
Thanks dr. I am a heavy coffee drinker as an Ethiopian. Now here is what I am gonna do:
cut down my coffee by 50%,
switch to decaf,
slow down, and
ultimately quit coffee in its entirety. I am at war with type 2 diabetes. Thanks dr. for the priceless info.
With love ❤️ from Philadelphia, PA
Thanks Jay! Love your solution
I suggest Peets Decaf coffee my husband drinks that and to him it tastes the closest to caffeinated.
My brother, what type/brand of decaf do you use? This video is very timely. I recently reduced my coffee intake.

Thanks for the advice. Do you have advice for Keurig users? I don't have the time to brew my coffee the traditional way.
I am going to try some of these tips. Like most coffee drinkers the idea of not having my morning coffee is a bit scary. I also drink caffeine loaded diet soda in the afternoon. It is a real eye opener to understand the effects of caffeine on my sugar levels. If these tips work for me my cardiologist will also be pleased that I've found a way to cut back.
What are your thoughts about drinking non dutched cocoa? It also contains caffeine.
Switch to Green tea or Matcha instead on average it has 1/3 the caffeine. Go for Swiss Water Decaf Coffee (uses No chemicals to lessen the caffeine).

I always walk with my coffee! I did want to say that I stopped drinking french pressed coffee, because it raises triglycerides. Hey Dr.
Any thoughts on someone pre-diabetic 5.7 A1C having 16oz of dark roast with 4 oz of sugary free vanilla protein shake in the morning after a 16hr fast? Asking for a friend. Kind regards.
It would be helpful to discuss the effect of additives such as sugar, milk etc., as many ppl use sweeteners .
I've drank black coffee since a teenager, but now in 60's I can tell difference between dark roast arabica I brew at home and whatever it is at shops. Even Starbucks generally are puzzled when you ask them if it's arabica, or know dark roast has less caffeine than regular Pike or the Blondes. Thanks for all the extra info, I'm not on those nasty meds yet!
I have a lot of success with a healthy roast from Purity coffee . There's a lot of new research on properly roasted good beans having a positive effect on the liver when covid hit I started ordering coffee through the mail and now I'm not too happy with what's available at the stores

What about the caffeine in diet colas and chocolate. I don’t drink coffee anymore but I do drink a cup of black tea in the morning and a diet cola at lunch or ice tea. Occasionally I have a couple pieces of sugar free chocolate.
Caffeine is caffeine any way you consume it. BTW check the carbs in that sugar-free chocolate.
Pretty good Doc!! Yes, tried decaf, didn’t work!! You get withdrawal!!Awful! Am still listening! Help!
Is it coffee that causes the spike or caffeine itself? Because caffiene is present in tea, chocolate, energy drinks and other foods/drinks. How about de-caffienated coffee, what is its impact on blood-sugar? If somebody can share a link to a relevant article or site , so I can read up more , I will be most grateful. 🙏
He answers this question in the video you left a comment on. I suggest watching the video he explain it very well, talks about tea, decaf coffee, etc.
Regular or Decaf spikes mine.
For me black coffee doesn't spike my blood sugar. I checked it many times with my glucometer. I am also diabetic.
🤗🤗🤗 gracias pot toda la información que nos trae muy beneficial bendiciones
Matthew Hoffman did a video on this and showed his glucose monitor results with trying different times he drank it with different types of breakfasts, it was really interesting. I had no idea that my preferred coffe methods were low caffeine. If I have a small amount of light roast I’m buzzing like crazy, I don’t like it. I like my roast to be as dark as possible, always 100% arabica beans, brewed in my French press and stuck in a blender with some butter, it’s like a no sugar latte. Top it’s with cinnamon and I’m a happy guy.
It's James Hofman actually who did this experiment. And that's how I ended up watching this video :)
@@KuropatkaJoe oops! Thanx for correcting the info, I’m now hooked on his channel.
Thankyou for explaining this , very important for us adicted to the stuff .
Its up to yhe individual.
Can sage tea or other tea associated with some ginger ,cloves and cinnamon can raise insulin?
Thank you for this video.
I drink turkey decaffeinated with little monk sugar.
This makes sense to me! I have been getting labs (fasting) done on a regular basis because I donated a kidney in 2017. My doctor says I am prediabetic. The last two lab results showed an increase in my A1C. I eat a healthy diet and was confused, BUT, I drank coffee both times about an hour prior to labs.
Starts at 5.55
I have always been told that you can drink black coffee when doing a fasting blood glucose test. Does this mean there is over diagnosis of pre diabedes, I am confident that someone who is diebedic will show in the A1C, does this invalidate the use of the fasting blood test?
Hey Doctor! Thank you for another helpful video. For non diabetic people, if doing intermittent fasting to lose weight and of course this is done to prevent sugar spike. Can I add half and half to my instant coffee? Does the half and half prevent coffee from raising the blood sugar?

After finding out I was developing diabetes 2, I gave up eating bread, potato, pasta and all other garbage food. I adjusted my food to eggs, vegetables, protein and fat.
Glucose levels have come down since than, but sometimes I measure a glucose spike of 160 and I really like to get that spike lower. In the morning before breakfast the level is around 100-110.
I have two possible causes. The liver still processing the overload of glucose or it’s the coffee I drink.
Or is a spike to around 160 actually nothing to worry about. I am 59 btw
Try certified mold free coffee.
All in all you're not doing too bad. Could be the Dawn Phenomenon with your fasting levels (what you alluded to with the liver dumping glycogen into the blood). Also, you could test the coffee theory and go without for one week and compare.
Also, no coffee with dinner or after dinner. And of course no caffeinated coffee first thing in the morning (that's just asking for trouble). Be sure to get organic if you're buying decaf. Supposedly, caffeine is a natural insecticide but decaf is sprayed heavily. Organic decaf should be free of chemical insecticides/pesticides.
I don't use anything in my coffee and I'm T2. I drink it pretty strong too and never knew it raises my blood sugar. Thanks for the info.

Funny I knew coffee was increasing my blood glucose but my doctor said no it does not. Thank you for the information and possible tricks and tips. I am curious does chicory also increase blood sugar? I used to drink an instant coffee brand name sunrise. I may try that again.
Chicory actually helps control blood sugar
Interestingly, I also have this chicory flavored instant coffee, and was going to ask if it was okay to continue drinking it.
Doctors are not informed on everything only if they keep themselves updated on knew data coming out which I hardly think they do from experience listen to your body you sometimes have to help yourself for your health 🙂
I drink Lavazza decafe coffee beans. With my grinder set to fine and the brew set to strong. Tastes delicious. I drink a lot of coffee when not so busy. I shall try 3 fasting days. The first day water the second with plenty of my coffee and the third with no coffee again.
Another one for me is adding Cinnamon to my black coffee😏.
Cinnamon is great for Diabetes and is also sweet and tastes great in coffee.
I'll give that a try! Sounds good. I drink straight up black coffee ☕️. Was drinking it with creamer, international delight, till I found out I had type 2..
@@beckytant3180 yes try Cinnamon it is a natural sweetener! But it is also great for a number of health reasons including controlling blood pressure and glucose levels.
It is really good for helping Diabetics and goes great in coffee👍.
Thanks for the info i lov coffee i dont have diabetes but im trying to avoid having to deal with it .i have coffee very strong and no sugar is that ok
