The sky redline is a fun car to drive. The turbo noises just don't get old it's a blast

GM was targeting sporty Japanese imports with the Saturn Ion, the later models were pretty cool. They also brought in the Astra from Europe to compete with the sporty looking hatchbacks, and of course the Sky is supposed to be a nice alternative to an MX5/Miata.
It's a shame that GM diluted the unique Saturn lineup with cheap rebadges - but that's just the GM way.

Saturn was not a minivan company. I was a tech for 5 years at Saturn. Saturn was the small to midsized car company. Saturn Relay did not do very well compared to the Oldsmobile Silhouette and Chevy Venture. At least where I was, being at the only Saturn dealer in a hundred miles. The sky was a nice driving car. I am 6'4" so I didn't care for it. Like trying to put on too small drawers. I also think the Sky was the better looking of the two. I think what killed Saturn is when they stopped making Saturns and just rebadged other GM products.

I stripped one of these in a local wrecking yard a couple years ago. I pulled that cupholder and sold it for good money. The buyer was not happy though because he didn't realize half the stupid interior has to come out to replace it.

Having owned a 1999 Mazda Miata and a 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP, if you are considering a Solstice or a Sky, the first thing you should look for is a Miata.

Why? I have a NA solstice with the 5 speed and I love that car all though I have never driven a Miata

@@aaronkaplan3220 The Solstice was fun and good-looking and faster in a straight line, but it didn’t have the build-quality and refinement of the Miata. I thought the Solstice felt a little rushed, and that a second generation with a little more development to iron out some of the kinks could have been a great car. Still, I liked the Solstice, but my issues were:
      1. The interior of the Solstice is pretty cheap, with lots of hard plastics. The cup holder was terrible too.
      2. The Solstice’s fuel tank is behind the seats, which may be great for weight distribution, but it makes the trunk tiny, and the top takes up much of the trunk space when down. The Miata has a small but larger and more usable trunk, and the top doesn’t fold into the trunk.
      3. Replacing the battery on the Solstice requires unbolting and removing the front right fender.
      4. My 2007 had the wheel bearings at all four corners go bad. GM redesigned them, and the replacements were fine, so hopefully anyone buying a used one won’t have that problem.
      5. I had manual transmissions, and the shifter in the Miata is a work of art. The Solstice’s isn’t bad, but it isn’t in the same category.
      6. With the Miata, raising and lowering the manual top is a one-handed operation. You can do it from the driver’s seat at a red light. The tonneau cover on the Solstice looks good, but it means you have to get out of the car to lower or raise the top and shut the tonneau cover. Plus, with my 2007 the spring to hold up the tonneau was too weak, so you had to hold it up yourself while raising or lowering the top. I don’t know if GM fixed the spring issue on later years.
      7. Speaking of the tonneau cover, I did several track days in the Miata and a few in the Solstice. Many tracks require rollbars for convertibles. I put a Hard Dog rollbar on the Miata. It was pretty easy to install. The only rollbar option I found for the Solstice required cutting the tonneau cover to install, which I didn’t want to do. That limited track day options for the Solstice.
      8. My buddy would go with me to track days in the Miata and we would double-stint it, with me driving it in one group and my buddy in another. You could pound on the Miata on the track all day and it was fine. By the time I got the Solstice, my friend had gotten an RX-8, so we never double-stinted the Solstice. Still, with just me driving it in one group, the brakes would fade to a sometime scary degree, and the brake pads would be shot by the end of the day. It was a faster, more powerful car than the Miata, but it needed better brakes.
      9. Also, on a track in the Miata, you could really find a zone where you and the car were in sync. With the right alignment set-up, the Miata was very neutral in cornering. With the Solstice, I never found that zone. With the stock alignment, it had too much understeer, and although the turbo lag wasn’t too bad, it still had some. So I would brake for a turn hoping the brakes hadn’t faded and were still working, turn in the corner trying not to be too aggressive so it wouldn’t understeer, and then when powering out of the corner there would be a nonlinear jump in power as the turbo came in, making the car want to understeer or oversteer. So the overall feeling for me was more wrestling with the car rather than getting in sync with it. Maybe a better driver than me could avoid some of that. Better brakes, finding a good alignment set-up, and getting used to the turbo power curve could have helped, but being limited on track day options due to not having a rollbar, I eventually stopped taking it to tracks and just did some autocrossing.

@@aaronkaplan3220 I typed a long reply comment, but RUclips deleted it, so this is attempt two. Maybe it was too long, so I’m splitting this up.
I bought my 1999 Miata new and kept it until a Mustang ran a stop sign and hit it, totaling it. I then bought my 2007 Solstice new and kept it until 2018. Each was my daily driver at the time. I liked the Solstice, and I thought it was a fun, good looking car. However, it didn’t have the build quality or the refinement of my 1999 Miata. I always thought that it felt like the development of the Solstice had been rushed, and that a second generation with more development to work out the kinks could have been a great car.

@@aaronkaplan3220 I thought the Miata and the Solstice were both good looking cars, but looks are subjective. Setting aside any preference on looks, for me, the advantages that the Solstice had over the Miata was that it was more powerful and faster in a straight line, had a slightly larger and more comfortable interior, and was a little quieter.
Disadvantages of the solstice compared to the Miata were:
      1. As I said, build quality and refinement. This is somewhat subjective, but everything felt better put together, with better materials, etc., on the Miata. The Miata had fewer squeaks, rattles, etc.
      2. The interior of the Solstice felt fairly cheap, with lots of hard plastics.

@@aaronkaplan3220 3. The fuel tank on the Solstice was behind the seats and took up much of the trunk, making the trunk tiny. Even worse, the Solstice’s top folded into the trunk, taking up most of the already limited room. The Miata had a small but still larger and more usable trunk, and its top did not fold into the trunk. In the Miata you could put the top down and not lose any luggage space. In the Solstice, if you went on a road trip with much luggage, you couldn’t put the top down.
      4. With the Miata, you could lower and raise the manual top from the driver’s seat. You could put the top up or down at a red light. With the Solstice’s hard tonneau cover, you had to get out of the car to raise our lower the top. Further, on my 2007 Solstice the spring was too weak to hold the tonneau cover up, and you would have to hold the cover up while lowering or raising the top. I don’t know if GM fix this on later model years.
      5. You had to unbolt and remove the front right fender to replace the battery on the Solstice.
