SERIOUSLY!! I have spent the last month searching high and low for the right Audi S5 and finally found one. I’m in a hotel where I’m fixing to go look (and possibly purchase) it tomorrow! My mouth dropped when the last car on his list was the Audi S5 lol!!🥴💩
I loved my Alfa Romeo and never had any problems with it. Now I own a 86' Porsche 928s and a 01' Boxter S and have had no issues with ethier - Scotty says all are terrible!
I’m a sales rep I drove a Pontiac solstice every summer for 4 years putting 100,000 miles. It used the ecetec motor form the Colorado pick up (which Scotty said was a good motor) I never had a problem. The interior was cheap very cheap! However if anyone is looking for a poor man’s weekend rag top, definitely recommend.
My thoughts exactly! Still have my Solstice after years and it still runs perfect! I don't know this guy very well, but he obviously does not know what hes talking about fully...
Yeah, I have one, 3 yrs now, drive it regularly, its great. The peole I have met that have had one rave about them.. Yes, we bought ones that werent driven like a sports car.
I bought a used 2007 Saturn Sky, a couple years ago. I've had it for about 3 years. Only drive it in warmer weather. Never had a problem. Love these cars !!
But they make Lexus, you can get a Lexus with 300-400hp easy...and still reliable. Look into the LS430 or the old IS, tons of fun to drive and healthy horsepower to enjoy
@@kev8943 There's a reason why cars are getting worse. It's because customers are getting worse too. When you have no standards to begin with, neither does the company selling you products.
Very good idea because a lot of those rare engine / mid-engine sports cars the evening change the drive belts you have to take the engine out and that could be very expensive
Well that’s why I believe in buying used from authorized dealers with a warranty of 2 years. If the thing lasted 2 years fine, keep it, otherwise get rid of it without having had high repair costs.
@@kadie1414 only the new Toyota CVT with the 'direct shift' for initial take off. The ones from a couple of years back without this technology are ok according to Scotty
Ive literally owned dozens of toyotas, supras, celicas, a tercel, pickups, camry, highlander, etc etc... they are the most reliable vehicle I have owned. more reliable than my 3 maximas I have owned and 2 infinitis. But alas, nothing is perfect !! Everything breaks down eventually.
Sports cars, I have owned a 240z, 260z, 280z, RX7, Miata, Miata Speed, 350z and three 370z's which I still drive one as a daily driver. The common denominator? All Japanese and I can tell you all were serviced regularly and none had any repairs beyond maintenance.
fastdude2002 mines done 90k pretty trouble free, but did change the radiator, surprised by a cost of £70 and a timing chain tensioner £100 as a precaution, new soft top too. I’d class that as low running costs. I do tuck it away in winter away from the salty roads. I use the vtec most times I drive it and I’d like to think it’ll outlive me.
So a quick look in the internet shows that 97.4% of Porsche 911 built in the last 25 years are still on the road. 70% of Porches ever built are still on the road.
Porsche is a high quality machine not ever going to fall apart but yes you have to have money to maintain them, this guy is out of his gourd. I had a 1980 Honda prelude with 210k miles on it i bought it with 210k on it and drove for two years did only brake and oil got it for 200 bucks.. Whatever any car can be a lemon.
@@cysawyer4829--daily or once a week ONLY??? 98% of 1990 Corvettes are still registered too. Owners can say they use it. But most only use it 1-2 days a week only. It is not the only car they have. I have 3 vehicles. Dont use them every day. They will last 30 years like that. my 2001 BMW is used only twice a week at most. My T Bird 2 or 3. The SUV mostly used. BMW will last forever like that.
My wife insisted on getting a dreaded early 2000s Boxster. We drove it 3 years and bought a new 2008S. Maintenance was less than expected and reliability was better.
@@joelpickett1558 Supras are one of the least reliable Toyota's though. Mk IV tend to run into serious problems around 100K-125K miles. These problems include automatic transmission failures, the bushings in the manual transmissions wearing out, ABS failures, EGR valve and other emissions equipment going out, camshafts warping/bending.
I have a 2008 Pontiac Solstice. I bought it two and a half years ago with about 4,500 miles and now has about 54,000 miles. Yes, I drove that many miles. I can tell you my car has been super reliable. I was quite surprised he said it will fall apart because it has been trouble free for me.
I also have a Saturn Sky (base) that I bought used. It's been extremely reliable, easy to work on, and I've added tons of mods to it. I also use it for autocross.....so Pooh to this guy's "Never Buy" list.

I actually did okay with a Porsche. I bought a 1976 Porsche 912e for $4,400 in 1999. It was a decent driver, nothing special. I drove it a lot, some years it was the only car I owned. I sold it for $16,500 in 2015. It had 260,000 + miles on it when I sold it and still ran great.
Nice story! I suspect You are the exception. I had a 2004 Z4 a few years ago 32,000 miles.excellent shape. paid $17,000. Fixed one sensor and a new set of tires. Drove it 6 mths a year (midwest) for a couple of years. Sold it a couple years later for $14,000. Great car! I would try another...My Mercedes on the other hand....
Exactly. I'm sorry and with all due respect to Scotty, who is GREAT entertainment, but anyone buying a used Porsche, and then taking it to a "generic mechanic" like Scotty here, is doing it wrong. You go into Porsche ownership making sure that 1) The last owner looked after it correctly, and 2) You can afford to do the same, at a specialist mechanic. You'll have $100K worth of fun, for MUCH less.
During the time I owned the Porsche, I took it it to two shops. I did some work myself. I did oil changes and replaced a starter. Back to the shops. One was a shop that only did German cars. The other shop worked on anything from Toyotas to Ferrari. I trusted both shops.
Got a 78 924 and I hear that 924’s are crappy cars, but mine aged well, apart from the original paint job. Almost all of the car is stock (bought a performance cooling fan and ceramic brake pads). Still have the original stereo, 8-tracks and speakers stored in case someone wanted to buy them. Came with the leather case for the removable top, trunk concealment cover and couple other things here and there. Seems I’m not the only one that got lucky.
I have to totally disagree with him on the Pontiac solstice. I bought a used GXP about 5 years ago and have driven the snot out of it with ZERO mechanical issues.
You are completely wrong about Porsches. They tend to be very reliable and don't fall apart. They are not cheap to maintain but they hold their value and don't fall apart or breakdown. My only regret was SELLING my 1990 911 Targa in Guards Red!
The bean counters at Porsche took over in the late 90's with the 996, Boxster, and Cayenne. The Porsches before this time were of very good quality and would last decades. Just close the door on any older Porsche and compare it to a newer one, if that doesn't scream quality than nothing will. If you look at Porsche's track record over the last 15 years for engine reliability, it's pretty sad -- IMS failures, scored cylinders, "D-chunk" cylinders, RMS leaks, etc. Not exactly confidence inspiring they know what they are doing...
Kevin Geiger my friend we only live like maybe 86 or 87 years in our lives if were lucky ,and if you have that extra money and you can drive that 911 , do it 👍🏻, just drive and be happy why looking in negative things in life ! Drive that 911 fast 👍🏻
Awesome car, the parts are not crazy prices neither, well from that era anyway, I had a 88 911 and I always thought the parts would cost more than they did
@@ebutuoyebutouy Yeah I wonder why, that thing can barely get out of its own way. It's criminally overpriced even here in germany. I saw a couple that were priced around 100 grand. Can you imagine paying 100 grand for a glorified VW? I'd much rather go with an old 124 spyder.
Scotty the Solstice is very reliable. I bought a 07 GXP with 120k miles on it for 6k. It has never broken down, other than simple stuff such as sparkplugs and oil etc. The only thing is that I had to change was purge solenoid because I have mine tuned which caused it to fail with the higher boost numbers.
I got a 2005 solstice with 197,000 km all summer use . $7000 Canadian ...only thing is it takes work to replace the battery...the best value in a poor mans sports car..cheaper than a skidoo and a lot more fun..Scotty is anti American when it comes to cars
Well my 89 911 turbo with 120k on the clock is still running like the day I drove it out the showroom... I've spent less than 10k on it since new...in fact I've spent more on fuel..!
I don't know what your customers were doing to those Solstices, but I've been in community since 2004 and they are generally very reliable, with a couple well-documented and inexpensive-to-repair issues ($125 water pump being the most common @ ~50k miles). Being parts-bin, most parts are still available new. My first one had 20,000 miles put on it in just the first year without a single problem. My second one is at 50,000 miles and I've only had to replace the water pump. I know guys who have run these things 150,000 miles, and a large portion of the community drives these often and hard. Very few of them are "lawn ornaments" or "garage queens," aside from winter storage. I am really not aware of any issues with them "just falling apart" *at all*. Also, the aftermarket scene is excellent, and the community is very active and supportive. These things have been documented to death. And... they are cheap. Way undervalued and a HUGE bang for the buck. You won't find many other cars for under $10k used that can *bolt on* upwards of 450hp. Those Ecotecs are rock solid engines.
215,000 and going on a 2008 solstice. Cheap fun.. I bought it at 18,000 miles and the most expensive repair I've had to date was a clutch. lol, wonder how that happened.
Have been driving my GXP for over 15 years and only 48,000 miles. Replaced the high pressure fuel pump at 24,000 under warranty. Love my car! So fun to drive ✅
I own a Saturn SKY (Solstice's brother) and have never regretted it. Bought it brand new and it still looks great and runs great too. Maintenance is important (with ANY vehicle) Still turns heads and "Thumbs ups" from onlookers. 🙂
Scotty, you are the man! I thoroughly enjoy your videos as I am in my late 50s and you remind me so much of the people I grew up with. It's like watching an old friend. Have a great day!
Everyone I knew that had a Pontiac Solstice were happy with them. They also said it was a solid car as long with minimal problems. So I'm not sure what your talking about Scotty. I'm talking about three owners. I asked about them because I was going to buy one. I ended up with an MR2 Spyder. I couldn't find a Solstice when I was looking for one. No one wanted to sale theirs!
I bought a used 2003 BMW Z4 with 45k miles in 2015 and it has been one of the best cars I've ever had. The M54 engine is practically bulletproof, the only this I had to do was a preemptive DISA valve replacement. It has been my daily driver and looks like new. People will easily believe it is worth more than twice what I paid for it! If you are planning on buying a sports car, take a look at the forums to get an idea of what you will be dealing with.
A V I worked as a detailer as my very first job and many years back an elderly couple showed up in a Z4. It had Texas plates on it and they drove all the way to Canada because they want to explore North America by road trip. The car had a lot of miles on it.
I’ve got a 2006 z4 3.0. I’ve put 30000 miles on it in the last year it’s never missed a beat. Looks like new. Never had a problem. For some reason the e85 z4s are overlooked. But they are a quality product and you can get them cheap
Aye older BMW are super reliable, they went down hill in late 2000 especially with the N54 engine. Just money pits those engines. The B57 engine looks promising however.
Haseeb Ahmed that’s a luxury 350z.. I’ve heard the g35 has the same chassis and engine as the Nissan 350z... I think the 350z go for a bit more since it’s not “luxury”
I had a 2001 911 4 that ran perfectly for 9 years. It depreciated 18,000 in 9 years so it was a pretty good deal and I was very pleased its reliability
Hakeem Sd70M I own. A 2001 boxter S and I’ve owned it for the past 3 years ..last year the rear main seal was leaking so had to replace that along with the IMS and since it was down I went ahead and changed the clutch it cost me 2,500 ..I don’t know if that was too much but it was worth it cause it runs like a champ and I don’t have to worry bout that going out again ...I’ve already made my money back on that repair
@@hakeemsd70m 997 is a much improved 996, actually. I've heard several Porsche mechanics disparage the 996. I owned an '04 btw and loved it, but the previous owner did lose the engine at 16.5K miles to a failed IMS bearing. Lucky for him it was still under warranty; $13K for parts and labor in '06.
@@vladimiralvarez1162 that's awesome. A little disappointing that you ran into the IMs problem, but like you said you made it back so it's a win-win. Enjoy the Boxster!
You are wrong about the Porsche 911. Especially if you get an older air cooled Carrera from 87 on. If you are buying a 911, you should know they can be expensive to fix anyway, and get a pre purchase inspection. They are worth every penny when you drive them. I have never seen 911s just fall apart as they get older like you stated in your video. The build quality is fantastic. I will agree that the 996 engines had some issues with the IMS a bearing, but there is a fix for that to make it reliable for a few thousand... I bought an 87 Carrera in 2006 for $8,400.00. It needed paint, which I did myself. Other than tires and breaks, this car has been GREAT. It runs awesome, and is a ton of fun to drive. If it ever needs an engine repair that I cant do, it will be expensive, but it's a great car, and worth fixing. I have been offered $20,000.00 for it and I wouldn't take it. You should have mentioned the Porsche 928 in your list instead. Now THAT is a money pit with the timing belt and water pump issues.
Still Love my Saturn Redline Sky. Bought new in 2008 still have it. Nothing ever gone wrong with it. Of course being 72 years old I drive it like a sedan do not stress it. But I do beat all Corvetts from the stoplight for the first 1000 feet.
No it's not their parts are expensive and they're high maintenance. Even the cheapest Porsche's like the 924 and 944 have expensive parts and require a ridiculous amount of maintenance. I learned first hand when me and my buddies bought a 944 with a blown driveshaft coupler. We turned it into a dirt racecar and we didn't make it through a whole race season because parts were so expensive, even used parts.
Porsches make some of the best used cars. Parts are sometimes more expensive because they were built with good parts and those cost money but they also tend not to break often. My Boxster has cost me $40 in repairs over 4 years, a rear wheel bearing that the OEM one was $39 and change and took only a few hours to install
@@barryjohnson5288 Not same, but many common components - Mezger also known as Frankenstein engine, drawing on a parts bin of their race engines, foremost of which was the GT1 engine.
@@captain6368 The M97 engine (the 3.8L fitted to 997.1 Carrera S) is better in many ways BUT it still has the IMS potential failure, although less likely than the M96. However, and here's the rub, in the M96 a replacement IMS is a simple retrofit, but in the M97 it's an engine disassemble job...if you can live with the very rare (assuming you've dealt to the IMS already) but real and expensive M96 engine problems, the payback is a fantastic value 911 that embodies all that a 911 should - and a very analogue experience. The M96 is hardly the first and only Porsche engine (let alone other high performance engines from other marques) to have potential serious issues.
Yes, he loses credibility for that call. The 911 Turbo he pictured never had the IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing failures, RMS (Rear Main Seal) leaks and cylinder cracking, that was the early standard Carrera models and only some of them.
While they are marvels of design and timeless classics, 911's are not for the uninitiated. No one can say they are inexpensive to own and maintain and I think that is what he is getting at. People that know are not surprised and expect a kick to the wallet for the privilege of driving a motoring legend, but that is not the vast majority of drivers. As for Audi he is dead on. They are an express train to the poor house.
@@sallen4848 Agree with you re Porsche, but not on Audi. I own both for years and have had trouble free motoring over lots of miles. Some Audi models perhaps are more prone to trouble than others, espc the loaded complex ones. Just more stuff to go wrong.
@@jamesmarshall3311 I am an Audi fan as I think they are usually on the bleeding edge of excellent German design. I had an Allroad that needed new air-suspension and an A4 that blew a Turbo at 37,000 miles. Both insanely expensive fixes. Would love to have an RS 7 one day but no time soon. Cheers!
I LOVE my 2007 Saturn Sky 2.4 L, standard transmission. The friend I bought it from is older like me and did PMs like clock work. All highway miles and garaged. It is in almost perfect condition inside and out. I had a new water pump put on at around 99,000 miles, ( not an issue) and had my mechanic replace anything he wanted, he put new timing chain tensioners on. He said the engine has at least 100 K trouble free miles left on her. Now days she is my toy up here in the twisties of The Ozarks! She handles like a dream and leaks/ burns zero oil between changes, ( I check it every time I fill up and average 29 MPG). I think the ones with the turbo are the problem child. I love your site Brother! Rev
Scotty I daily drove my solstice for 2.5 years in Pa until I got another daily and the car has never had a big maintenance hickup at 91k miles. I have modified the hell out of mine and sorted a bunch of performance related problems because I turbocharged it but it runs perfect. Keep in mind this was a weekend cruiser older people bought back in 2007 not something a 20 year old kid like me took out and beat on like I currently do
Mercedes benz is not easily maintained.. especially the models 2000's up to present.. it costs you thousands and thousands till you're broke and no money.(well unless..you're a rich person and willing to throw money on that car)
I've had my cls since 09.. 2 things went wrong.. One of the bags was leaking and the left low beam went out.. The total repair was about $1300 for both.. Everything else is regular maintenance... Grouping all the cars and saying they are expensive to maintain isn't true.
I bought a 2006 solstice new and the only problem I have had was a broken cup holder. I love driving this car when I take her out and I have to disagree with you.
I have a 2007 Saturn Sky and the only issue I've had is the cup holder (easily fixed if you have access to a 3D printer, BTW) and the water pump. Honestly, for a 12 year old car, I'm kind of amazed at how few issues I've had. Heck I've had fewer issues with it than I have with my Wife's 2010 Corolla and that's newer and is one of Scotty's precious Toyotas.
My wife has a 2007 Solstice GXP we bought used in 2010 with about 7,500 miles on it after her 2006 was hit from behind by a Mercury Mountaineer SUV and eventually totaled (the SUV had to be towed and the Solstice was driven home... who woulda thunk?)... It now has 100K miles on it and has had its share of problems recently. It's in the shop now. The turbo is blown, the water pump is now bad for the second time, one of the lifters may be bad, and one of the struts is shot. I thought I had all the problems licked when I cured the misfires by changing the plugs and coils, and the overheating by replacing the thermostat and temp sensor a couple months ago. But it eventually started throwing high temps again. I don't have the tools or experience to do the water pump myself, so right now I have a specialist working on it. I am going to spend some cash. but we are doing new turbo, water pump, timing chain, O2 sensors, cam sensor, crank sensor, struts, and brakes. I was able to buy all OEM parts from a local dealer's online store for far less than they would charge in the shop. Also got a few AC Delco parts from RockAuto and a couple other stores. Some of the parts aren't necessarily bad, it's just a "while we're in there" kinda thing. I am most disappointed the turbo is blown after 100k, thankfully I found one brand new OEM online for $630. It's also disappointing the water pumps typically fail at 50k or less and it's a $1,000 job to replace a $100 part. That's probably the biggest thing I hate about this car. I'll be flushing the coolant more often to prevent it in the future. I'm thinking once per year maybe. All things considered, the car is 12 years old, was my wife's daily up until a year ago, has 100k miles on it, has been paid off for 6 years, seen its share of abuse from me driving it, and hasn't been too egregious for a sports car. But it's certainly not the best nor is it low maintenance. I have a 2003 Dodge Neon SRT4 with over 210k miles and the original turbo is fine and so is the motor, and I abused THE CRAP out of it. The solstice is fun though, gets lots of compliments, and is quick as hell with the turbo. I love that it's rear wheel drive and 5-speed manual. Oh and my cup holders are broken too. The one on the passenger side by the glove box has been broken almost since we first got it, and I cracked the dual cup holder in the center but was able to super glue it so it still works. Looking forward to getting it back,
Considering 97% of ALL Porsche 911 ever made, are still on the road, I'm calling BS on Scotty's over generalized Porsche blabber. The M96 engine he mentioned, does have a design flaw, but a few hundred bucks of parts permanently corrects that. Many older 911's have appreciated greatly in value (some more than 3X in recent years) ... the 996 Turbo can still be picked for cheap, with it's Mezger engine , it's one of the most reliable and potent tuners cars one can buy ... prices will continue to go UP, not down. There are MANY low cost aftermarket replacement parts for Porsches, do the work yourself, or a non-dealer shop, and repairs are not expensive.
@@VibingCat39 clutch replacements are the norm for any reasonably powered sports car .. just like brake pads and tires. That said, the Automatic tranny is bullet proof.
You can't buy it if it has an automatic transmission. Scotty hates those on the Nissan. Personally, I like the way the gauge cluster goes up and down with the steering wheel.
I have 2 second hand Porsche 911's : a 1998 Carrera 2 & a 2004 Carrera 4S convertinble. Both best cars I ever had : rock solid and parts (if ever needed) are very reasonable. Maintenance is super easy, all is very well documented. The 'horror story' about the engines (IMS etc) is an urban legend ...
I bought a used '99 911 Carrera 4S in '04 and kept it for 6 years as my daily driver. It already had 34,000 miles on it when i got it, but it was in excellent condition. The 996 only needs to be serviced every 12,000 miles (which doesn't amount to much) and I barely spent any money on unscheduled maintenance. Maybe I just got lucky.
I also have a 2000 911 996 . i'v had it 4 years put over 40000 miles on it . Run's like a top . Only thing I did was change the IMS So I could sleep at night . After changing and seeing the old one .. well I didn't need to change it . Love my 996 . My CTS costs more to change the oil and service .
@@Stormtrooper-oc4vn Experience doesn't mean that he knows everything. I've had a Porsche for over 4 years now and it's a fantastic car. Want to keep service costs down? don't go to the dealer and find a qualified independent shop. Furthermore, as long as you have your IMS bearing changed out or buy an 08+ model that doesn't have one, then it's very unlikely that you'll have an issue.
I've had an Audi S5 for the past 3 years and it had a pretty bad oil consumption problem, but I took it to the dealer and they replace every piston, seals etc on the engine for free. The things I had to pay for: the vaccum pump for $780 cause it had a leak and the engine mounts for $792 because car was shaking pretty bad idling. It's been 2 years after that fix and no more problems with it, only regular car maintenance like oil change and other fluids. Its expensive to maintain it but I love my S5.
Hi there. What year is your S5 and how many miles is on it? I have a 2014 A5 with about 40k miles. Do you have any tips on what I should start saving for re repairs or what I should be concerned with? It's not an S5, but I still love it and want to prevent any issues so it doesnt become a money pit. So far so good. I had it since 2016. Any tips or suggestions is greatly appreciated. 🤗
@@debbieh9009 I got a 2011 S5 with Manual Transmission with around 72k miles on it. The only big fix I had to pay for was the engine mounts, they're good for about 7-10 years. It cost me $1,741 to replace them with the dealer and it's been running great for 2 years since. The clutch replacement it's very expensive at Audi, around $2600 but mine mine it's in good condition. Brakes could be expensive too but if you get the them done outside the dealer you'll save hundreds. In all honesty unless it's an engine problem dont take it to Audi, they charge way too much compare to other reliable businesses. Examples: My fog lights were out and they offer to fix them for $200 , but the bulbs are only around $15 and it's very simple to replace. Another one is the oil change, Audi offer to do it for $234 but I get it done for $84 at Jiffy Lube. I hope this helped.
Purchased my Pontiac Solstice used and have never had any issues with it. It’s been nothing but reliable and is still in meticulous condition. Gas and oil is all it’s ever needed. Anyone I know who has one, swears by them. They don’t fall apart.
Wow. I bought a 2008 Honda S2000 in 2010 sold it 5.5 years later for what I paid for it. I guess I did good. Held value like no other car I ever owned.
Mike Brandenburg - I paid $17,600 for a new '87 Grand National, owned it for 17 years and 89k miles. Sold it for $24,500 to the first person to see it for sale. The car was trouble-free except for a new turbo and cat back.
Mike Brandenburg - Yeah, as you know, select cars if well taken care of and accident-free can be wise investments that cost almost nothing to drive. Pay cash for them and skip the interest too, unless you can write off enough on your taxes to even things up. Have a good one!
Outside of the IMS bearing, the 996 had a pretty solid engine and drivetrain. In fact, prices on used 996 and 997’s are starting to rise. Yes, maintenance is more expensive than a Civic, but you only live once and you’re NOT going to get laid picking up your date in a Civic.
I bought a Porsche 996 and bought it for $22K, used it daily for 5 years, loved it and spent nothing on it expect tires, oil change (and did the brake once). Sold it for $26 K 5 years later and was the most reliable and cheapest car I have owned. My next car, a 997 Porsche. Scotty - you have no clue ;-) The IMS can be fixed for $2K if needed.
Scotty is definitely right with those luxury brands they only like to sell you parts As a whole assembly, infiniti dealer tried to screw me kn my Q50 for $700, I just got the single part online for $100 and installed it myself in 3mins, tried to rape me with some labor charge KNOWING It would only take them a couple minutes so I did it myself
I daily drive a 2006 porsche cayman with a 3.8. yes they do have expensive parts but they are built really well. and of all the sports cars I have owned it is the only one that I have not gotten bored with. it's an amazing car every time I get behind the wheel. one thing you have to remember you have to pay to play. and my car has had one issue with the chrono clock going out but other than that I just change the oil and it's good. and the price of labor at the dealership was less than the Ford dealership next door.
Answer The Call I think you mean 3.6. No 3.8 in an ‘06 Cayman...including the S that I owned. Agree with you on the performance/fun factor. The IMS IS an issue, but you can address it. Normal maintenance can be done by owner greatly reducing costs.
I would have to disagree with Scotty on the GM Saturn Sky...they are affordable and dependable. The best buy for a sports car not to mention convertible.
I have owned a Pontiac Solstice for 9 years and it runs great. Has not broken does, fallen apart or anything like that. The only thing I have had to do is replace the driver side door handle, common issue with the type of handle used on many cars today. The one thing I have seen when looking for used Solstice's on line is just about all of them have 80+K miles on them. The engine 2.4L is tough proven power train. The differential comes from a Cadillac T series. We get it Scotty, you don't like GM cars. You must have grown up driving Fords or Chryslers.
Love my 07 Solstice GXP. With less than $700 in mods it embarrasses much more expensive cars. I've owned for almost 4 years and nothing has broken. I guess I'm just lucky.
Oh, and another thing on the 911 Scotty... You could buy a 1995 993 turbo for $45,000.00 15 years ago. Now they are selling for 70,000 to 100,000.00. Many 911's go way up in value . If you have the right model, they are a good investment.
@@Mr.Waffulzzz From what I've seen on forums, they can have minor issues when they start getting past 100,000. A common one is the stock catalytic converted becoming clogged, and the 06/07 ones sometimes throw a "service airbag" light. So far over the years, the most major work I've done is fixing a radiator hose leak and replacing the battery.
It's true, most Corvettes are bought new by old guys who sale them after only a few years. The older you get, the harder it becomes to enter and exit low slung sports cars so don't wait too long when it comes to sports car ownership.
I had a great experience with my 911. It was a 99, i had it for 2.5 yrs. Drove the heck out of it. Put new tires on it, that was all. However, the clutch was getting weak and I was concerned about the main bearing problem those seem to have, so I sold it. Thank you for these great videos!
I think a better list (harder list) would be a good used sports car list. Does such a thing exist? I would think potentially a BRZ/Toyota 86 would not be that bad? I have a friend with a 2013 with over 100,000 miles with trouble free operation. But I have no idea if that is a relatively good used car buy. Still enjoy watching Scotty go after sports cars - most are not a good deal.
The engine needs to come out to change the spark plugs! And there is no after market plugs yet too Lol The 86 has a Toyota badge, but not the build quality.
@@Buc_Stops_Here Yes, really. I rarely see anything about the e85 z4 being unreliable. Do your own research before believe everything anyone says. Hell, the bmw i6 engines are fairly reliable.
Here in Europe Audi's and Merc's and even Porches are known to be really well made long lasting. I don't know what you folks are getting in the states but seems like its far from being the same.
If I had to make a guess, I'd say those companies are taking advantage of the United states lack of regulation, it happens alot... activisionblizzard a us company, told us customers to take a picture of them playing on a switch to win a free switch so u had to have bought one, the same company did the same raffle for eu players 3 days later, it said enter your email to win... that's what capitalist extremists get you, screwed, we pay more for worse quality medicine, everything
Wrong answer with the Solstice. Bought one used with 16k and it now has 65k. It should be renamed GTO as the only thing needing replacement is gas, tires and oil. Unlike the Celica we had prior, 2 engines (1 from JDK) and constant suspension/ steering issues.. now that was a money pit !
If I had to go German, it would be Porsche. Of all the German brands its built pretty solid. But if you buy a Porsche, you already know theres going to be some things that pop up. Like getting the IMS fixed if it hasnt been done already and while the engine is out, you might as well get a preventative maintenance done
I'm the GM of a Toyota dealership, and we had an 2010 Audi S5 V8 come in for an oil change that we had sold a few years back. Well, we did the oil change, all went fine, car ran beautifully, but the car LITERALLY broke down on the express lube guy in the car wash!! The fuel pump just went out in the middle of the car wash and it was just left sitting there until my shop foreman came and got me, we pushed it out, contacted the owner of course he was mad but I had to tell him he was responsible, and not us. The lemon couldn't even make it out of it's OIL CHANGE!!!! To make a long story short. I have no clue why my express lube guy did this, but he locked the car with key and when he unlocked it, the door lock actuators FAILED and we couldn't open neither the driver or passenger side door. We had to climb in through the trunk to open the doors. (Mind you this car had 61,000 miles on it and me, the General Manager is climbing into the trunk of Audi with a tow truck behind it, beside the showroom with customers videoing the ordeal.) Finally, I told the guy look, this car is a money pit and it's time to upgrade. Sure enough, a few week later the guy returned and traded that junker in for a 2019 XSE Camry. Which he's much happier with. Moral of the story is, DON'T ANY AUDI and plan on owning it for any serious length of time. I've heard and seen horror stories you wouldn't believe. Unless you want to look dumb like me and this trying to get into his car that failed in our carwash for crying out loud! What a day that was.
Same here (986). very cheap to keep. A coupe of "gotchas", but day to day the thing is an appliance. And i drive the crap out of it, including PCA and SCCA autocross. $5-10K/year? Hell no.
@@Will-wg3hj The 99 has the larger IMS so it has a much lower failure rate than the 2000-2005 models. The smaller, crappier IMS was phased in during 2000.
I just bought a 2007 Pontiac Solstice Naturally aspirated 2.4L for $1000 from a close family friend. About two weeks later I find your vid. I love this car its a one owner car and was garage kept so at least that is going for me. I hope the na is more reliable then the turbo gxp.
I like scotty but my wife bought a solstice when it had 20000 miles for 6000 dollars. It now has almost 100000 miles driven daily and being a mechanic i really apreciate the cars durabilly. Aside from brake pads and oil changes all i had to do was a water pump at 93000 miles. It was not beat on though by the original owner or us. Very good car.
The Solstice is Porsche taste on a Pontiac budget :-) Nothing has fallen off my '07 GXP yet, though it's got its share of mechanical issues now with 100k on it.
Hey Scotty, I have a Saturn Sky and a Pontiac Solstice GXP. Both are great cars. Drive each one as a daily driver. Lots of Power and very dependable.... Very Fun To Drive!!! Good luck with your "Opinions"
Yeah those 600SLs are pretty brutal. The weight of the V12 alone causes all kinds of havoc on the suspension, and then there's two of everything to keep an eye on. I have a 92' 300SL, and the inline six is a far easier car to keep in top shape without going broke. They're often driven differently by owners than the other variants as well.
what porsche that you can buy used for 8k costs 8-10k in maintenance each year? even taking it solely to the stealership and doing everything the recommend that figure does not seem remotely achievable
It’s gonna be more like 2-3 at most. Usually less than 1k. Porsche after 2006 are very reliable. They fixed the IMS bearing failure for good in 2009, being the main concern. If you can do something as simple as an oil change or basic maintenance, you can be absolutely fine.
Francois Franceschini Look, I like scotty, but he he only knows what he’s talking about concerning your car consumer and driver. He doesn’t really appeal as much to the enthusiast market and more everyday people looking for car tips.
Pontiac Solstice. Dude I do not know what you are talking about with the Solstice. I got a used 2007 GXP for $8,000 a few years back and I absolutely love this car. It is super fast, looks great, and has not given me a single issue in 5 years beyond an AC compressor and a couple clips for the flaps on the convertible top. ANY sports Car is going to require maintenance if you want to be able to drive it and feel safe going over 100 MPH, but the idea that body panels will be falling off is just a complete misrepresentation.
rx8 (people will argue this), 1st/2nd gen integra and celica. Honestly most used sports cars 'reliability' comes down to your personal knowledge and treatment of the platform.
That's one thing, and a completely different one is buying a car that you know its engine will, without a doubt, blow up! (Looking at you rotory cult...)
I know people are going to debate the Challenger being classified as a sports car. Well it’s a muscle/sports car and it’s a competitor to the Corvette, which is a sports car.

During the time I owned the Porsche, I took it it to two shops. I did some work myself. I did oil changes and replaced a starter. Back to the shops. One was a shop that only did German cars. The other shop worked on anything from Toyotas to Ferrari. I trusted both shops.

I bet that targa looked so cool.

Looking forward to getting it back,
tiffany grice
The Solstice GXP is my current dream car. I hope someday to own one.
I agree, the only thing I heard going bad on them was the clutch.
@@VibingCat39 clutch replacements are the norm for any reasonably powered sports car .. just like brake pads and tires. That said, the Automatic tranny is bullet proof.

@@brianminghella3312 Nonsense and pure begrudgery.
I’ve been lucky to keep my Solstice for so long. Almost 200,000 miles and still my daily.
Would you mind telling me about it? Im planning on getting one this week and im curious in talking to owners about its reliability
@@callista6813 Love my solstice ,and they DONT fall apart.Great little car.
@@Mr.Waffulzzz Lots of fun to drive and chics like them! Not as reliable as a Honda. I speak from experience.
@@Mr.Waffulzzzyou end up getting one bro?
Most Corvettes are bought by Older Men, and are IMO, well maintained and You can get a good deal with low mileage. It competes with Supercars
Not only that, parts and plentiful and cheap.
most corvettes are not they are bought by younger people that enjoy a fast car that can compete with cars double the price
@@J5Files Maybe used, but new Corvettes are purchased more buy older buyers. It's not an opinion, it's a fact.
It's true, most Corvettes are bought new by old guys who sale them after only a few years. The older you get, the harder it becomes to enter and exit low slung sports cars so don't wait too long when it comes to sports car ownership.
Also Corvettes have better highway MPG than pretty much any other truly fast car.
E85 z4 is pretty reliable as well. Just some prevent maintenance and you'll be good for years.
@@2010ngojo Really? Never heard that BMWs are all that reliable. Even Scotty warns everyone they are endless money pits as is Mercedes. You disagree?
@Ocean Lives Does it last over a decade? That is the question.
@@Buc_Stops_Here
Yes, really.
240pixel should watch his other video about why it is like that in the us
In Russia Audi has poor reputation and a resale value of a used condom too.
@@borisbritva7453 becose they are very beated up.
Its big diference betwen a bmw ,audi, merc made in europe , with one made in the states.
Been driving my GXP for over 15 years now. Love my Solstice 😍
Owned my '06 Boxster for 6 years and 18k miles later a reliable fun car(51k total miles)
Same here (986). very cheap to keep. A coupe of "gotchas", but day to day the thing is an appliance. And i drive the crap out of it, including PCA and SCCA autocross. $5-10K/year? Hell no.
Yeah thing is that's not daily driver mileage. Maybe that's what he's talking about? IDK
I'm not sure either, if you do the maintenance & don't beat on it they're solid cars.Oh..fun as hell also.@@jebril
@@slowlygoingfaster No IMS issues? Asking for a friend that bought a 99 with 85k...lol.
How's it been holding up man?
I like scotty but my wife bought a solstice when it had 20000 miles for 6000 dollars. It now has almost 100000 miles driven daily and being a mechanic i really apreciate the cars durabilly. Aside from brake pads and oil changes all i had to do was a water pump at 93000 miles. It was not beat on though by the original owner or us. Very good car.
The Solstice is Porsche taste on a Pontiac budget :-)
Nothing has fallen off my '07 GXP yet, though it's got its share of mechanical issues now with 100k on it.
Hey Scotty, I have a Saturn Sky and a Pontiac Solstice GXP. Both are great cars. Drive each one as a daily driver. Lots of Power and very dependable.... Very Fun To Drive!!! Good luck with your "Opinions"
The Pontiac Solstice GXP is so awesome! Been driving mine for over 15 years and 48 thousand miles 👍 Best car I ever bought and so fun to drive ✅
Scotty Kilmer: Pontiac Solstice
Autobot Jazz: and I took that personally
Scotty, make a quick video about your cat hahahaha..... that would be awesome.
what porsche that you can buy used for 8k costs 8-10k in maintenance each year? even taking it solely to the stealership and doing everything the recommend that figure does not seem remotely achievable
It’s gonna be more like 2-3 at most. Usually less than 1k. Porsche after 2006 are very reliable. They fixed the IMS bearing failure for good in 2009, being the main concern. If you can do something as simple as an oil change or basic maintenance, you can be absolutely fine.
@@dogman9558 even if youre replacing the ims bearing every year it wont cost anywhere near 10k lol
VonGutenburgen Steinenhoffer Exactly. A new godamn engine for a boxster or cayman is less than that
This guy just preaches to stiff dumbasses who think they know what they’re doing. Probably made the numbers up on the spot
Francois Franceschini Look, I like scotty, but he he only knows what he’s talking about concerning your car consumer and driver. He doesn’t really appeal as much to the enthusiast market and more everyday people looking for car tips.
My 2008 Pontiac solstice with a 148k miles says "Scotty who?" Never a problem. Tons of fluid changes and new plugs @100k.
I'm about to buy one. What's the main maintenance to do to it
To keep it alive
Pontiac Solstice. Dude I do not know what you are talking about with the Solstice. I got a used 2007 GXP for $8,000 a few years back and I absolutely love this car. It is super fast, looks great, and has not given me a single issue in 5 years beyond an AC compressor and a couple clips for the flaps on the convertible top. ANY sports Car is going to require maintenance if you want to be able to drive it and feel safe going over 100 MPH, but the idea that body panels will be falling off is just a complete misrepresentation.
I watch your channel all the time Scotty and I would just like to tell you that your insight is very valuable and highly appreciated. Thank you.
