This could sound sociopathic, but I feel this happens when you have two friends that you put in different tiers. Like, one friend you just put up with because of close proximity or neighbor or something, and the other is a friend you actually like hanging out with. Then if you're an asshole, you start making fun of your lower tier friend to your high tier friend, thinking it's funny.
That's my understanding of the logic behind it

It doesn't HAVE to mean they treat everyone that way. People are complex and have all manner of relationships that don't all have to be the same 🤭

      @DiscoDashco 13 дней назад

Because people like that are toxic when all they do is complain or criticize about others. It’s completely unfair when you realize you have no real idea as to what they’re talking about until you were to meet this person, then find out that individual isn’t all that bad of a person at all, in fact they end up having quite the refreshing personality, and you end up liking them more than the established buddy who’s done nothing but bad mouth them. Point is, people who talk shet about others to you, will assuredly talk smack about you too in front of other people they know but you might not. I understand that sometimes we need help to see our blind spots in life, but it’s fairly straightforward. Don’t look too much into it. If you still find difficulty trying to understand after my attempt at an explanation, maybe you should consider thinking about how you carry yourself in social settings. Use Occam’s razor as a mental tool if you must; determining if things you say about others in your own life are ultimately praise or criticism - it can be only one or the other in regard to net outcomes, positive or negative. If you’re not talking up your friends to others but complaining, you might just be “that guy” is all. Hope this helps.

This reminds me of my “friend” who constantly said negative things about his friends like they were boring, nerdy, condescending, know-it-alls, judgmental, etc. He was good at projecting this as everyone else’s problem, and yet he was the only person I knew who didn’t like something about everyone. He acted as if he was too good for everything and he had low tolerance for talking about things he hated (which was a loong list, I always felt like I was walking through a minefield trying to avoid them). Hanging out with him was great as long as you kept it to things he liked and we had to cater to him constantly. He was the type of friend that pretended it was tough love and insisted he just “tells it like it is.” Zerik would go through these cycles of idealizing friends to devaluing them, at his worst actively hating some of his “friends” only to eventually swing back around.
I was a fool for thinking I somehow wasn’t getting the same treatment. One day I hung out with a new friend of his (Andy) and realized Zerik was treating me like the Brian of this video. It was a surreal experience realizing he was trying to set me up to look like the asshole. This was just a few weeks ago and now that I’ve noticed the pattern I will never hang out with this “friend” again. I wasted so much time feeling like I had to keep him happy but life is too short to waste on negative and toxic people.
Andy, I know you’ll never see this, but give it a few years, you’ll be getting the same treatment. Hell, you already are. You don’t deserve to have Zerik shit all over everything you like. You have good taste in music and the things you enjoy (dnd, board games, “nerd shit”, etc) are great and valid. I hope you find friends that lift you up and make you feel loved and appreciated 100% of the time, not conditionally. 💜

I just want to say when I initially subscribed for the animated skits I thought it was the only thing I’d be subbed for, but after you mentioned ages back that you’re more proud of your IRL skits I decided to check em out.
It’s been a long while since the adventure awaits skits and honestly Joel you ALWAYS make me laugh in every single one of your videos, keep it up man!

this is what Narcissitic Personality Disorder looks like. I had a step mom that was like this that i was around from age 5 to 25. she constantly sh*t on her own family. someone was always doing something wrong in her eyes. I remember I never felt I could do anything right. She made me insecure about just using the bathroom at times and making it smell too bad (like we could do anything about). No matter what you did for her, you'd end up incurring her wrath. I had to listen to her many times talk badly about family members on my dad's side and then smile in their face while they were there and then would comment badky about them when they left. which was a horrible awkward feeling like joel expresses in this short.
She was a vindictive hateful person. And you wanna know the best part?? she could be super charming and nice when you're not on her bad side. the thing is her niceness towards me would sometimes be used to discreetly harm someone else psychologically. she did it to try hit me mentally too which made me more cognisent of it at times. There was a constant nagging feeling throughout my life that something wasnt right about how she would act and even her own family and my dad felt similarly
I'm 29 now and I'm jacked up. I took too long to figure out what I was dealing with and still figuring out how specifically it effected me.
To me this is like a PSA to not contend with people like this for real. People throw around "Narcissist" willy nilly but everyone displays a narcissistic trait at some point. NPD is an illness that is very patternistic and defineable. Most people like this have wounds theyre never going to heal and it really is a fruitless endeavor to try reasoning with them. My dad tried talking to my step mom at one point about therapy or something to that effect and she went off the deep end and it did not go over well. she percieved it as him calling her crazy.
She is approaching her 80s now and has dementia.
Anyway this was a great short! Joel you have such a way with presenting real situations in a funny way.

Hey dude, don't say you took too long to figure it out! Sure it sucks that you didn't realize sooner, but you can't really blame yourself for not knowing until you did, that's just how life goes sometimes. No point wasting time ragging on yourself for not realizing sooner when you can just put that energy towards making your future better! I suggest trying therapy if you can afford it (and/or try looking up techniques and stuff if you can't afford it). Anyway, best of luck in recovering and moving forward with your life and I wish you a happy, healthy future! :)

@@LaVerdad65 I don't think he's throwing "willy nilly" anything.. xD That being said, being around people with NPD or BPD is hell, and you often don't realise it until much later. Judging by his story, I think either might very well fit his step mom's personality. But then again, you and I don't really know all the context now do we? Kinda strange how u willy nilly throw around that judgment. ;)

Oh hey, we have the same step mom it would appear.
I remember her getting a new couch and a week later were at American Furniture Warehouse and she wants a new table. She didn't work and my dad said "We just got new furniture last week" and guess what she does ? She starts screaming, yelling and crying saying my dad is awful and doesn't love her. We left with a new table.
She would treat me like shit, ground me for no reason and not pay me my allowance so my mom would send me money and she would steal it. She screwed with me mentally and even choked me on a couple occasions when I said no to her.
Everybody thought she was so great... Until they really got to know her and she would stab them in the back.

I had a "friend" that reminds me of this guy. He made fun of friend's behind their backs (except for ones that were clearly superior than him and buddied up to so it would probably boost his ego/reputation and he would not jeopardize that). I did so much for him and even though i recognized how much he'd trash talk people behind their backs I didn't think he'd do it to me. There were a few occasions i could/saw him making little insulting hand gestures to me in my peripheral vision or behind my back. I thought it was all in my head but I began to feel mutual friend's vibes around me as if he was turning everyone against me. He never admitted to doing anything but when i told him how i felt i stopped communicating with him and he reached out like we were best friends. Shortly after that he moved and completely vanished. Then the mutual friends we had never got ahold of me except to ask if i knew where he was.
I read that if you spot a narcissist and tell them to their face about it they'll end up uprooting themselves and avoiding you at all costs.
