Today on Fallen Titans, Quinton Reviews talks about Joji Miller, and his famous creation Filthy Frank. While not too distant into the past, this page in RUclips history is just as fascinating (and worthy of unbiased analysis) as any other.

In my humble opinion (and I've only seen the film so far, so I'm not sure it applies to book that well, but hear me out) the whole point of Fight Club is that your ideas that seem great and might even be great eventually have chances mutate into monstrosity that will take over your life and there will be no fail-safe to stop the inevitable catastrophe. The moment in which Tyler breaks the fourth wall while film itself starts to crumble under its own pressure is the moment when idea becomes ideology in that regard. I can partially agree with the sentiment many people share that most of the fandom does not get the point of the movie by sympathizing with Tyler, but at least up until aforementioned transition point it is by design: Tyler is someone many people will find an affecting and charismatic person, because he's supposed to be, to a point. That's probably why Palahniuk himself has gone on record saying that film adaptation might be better: film presents way more methods to make you feel off about the idea after a certain point, I'd say.

It's kind of what makes it great. Like was ff disgusting, racist, vile, etc? 100% yes no denying. But it wasn't 'dumb'. Even the 'extreme' videos are meant as parody and satire of RUclips itself.
The entire package (lore, pranks, extreme videos) is in itself a parody and a very very smart and well written one.
THE PROBLEM was (and always is with edgy content creators) some 'fans' miss that part of it. They see the racism and disgustingness and think THATS the joke. When in reality when George conceptualized the video that person who is racist, vile, disgusting IS the joke. The joke is that people like you exist. The joke is that at some point to get attention on RUclips you'll have to go so far as to eating your own vomit because people are so desensitized. The people who are these things completely miss that and latch on because 'he's like me'.
The lore just added on to the satire zone he created. It was also a satire in itself mostly of anime if you watch the videos.
But shock humor is a hard zone to live in. Eventually too many idiots who don't get it move in and destroy it. Its happened every single time. Dave Chapelle. Ice poseidon. Idubbz. Eventually they come face to face with the scum of their community and have to make a choice.
Almost all of them walk away and I don't blame them one fucking bit.

The part at the beginning of the video about the edgetube thing is really relatable. Ive learned over time that "ironic edgy jokes" are really risky. Look at team America world police. There are countless conservatives that hold it up as something that supports their values despite it moking them. Same with shows like American dad. The main character would say that women only think with their emotions. People in the comments would see it as confirming their bigoted beliefs despite the actual joke being about mocking people who hate women.

Man yeah i was thinking about this throughout the video. First time I heard this shit brought up it was about alt righters and neo nazis, and how when you build a fanbase that's there to see you constantly squash caring about peoples Feelings and whatnot, the moment you get hurt, well, you've got an audience of hungry dogs who are gonna smell blood. It's actually sad to think that even people who've done a lot of harm to minority communities won't ever be able to escape, let alone people who were just going through an edgy phase or trying to make commentary through edgy jokes. That thing in the beginning of this video about the moustache? The earlier we can stop copycats, the less we'll have to dig out of the holes they backed themselves into, but who knows how to accomplish that

I’ve always understood that sort of thing as an instinctive awareness that subversive behavior kinda needs to have a point in order to avoid “they just don’t get me” ego inflation & hollow rejection of constructive criticism.
Inspiring outrage is a side effect of a subversive message, it isn’t a goal worth a shit in and of itself. And that’s where the discomfort comes from, a need to have a reason you can point to if anyone honestly asks what you’re doing. Understanding that the pain you incidentally cause in pursuit of some greater clarity about the nature of social interaction is what makes subversive acts fun & a reminder of how to be true to the self rather than unthinkingly accept whatever “normal” is supposed to be.

Patavinity I don’t know where you got that, or what you even think the word “nuanced” means. He was basically saying that “edgelord humor” has a positive in that it questions censorship and an overly glossy view of society, but goes bad when people take it at face value and erase the underlying criticism. For example, making a racist joke can actually be intended as a criticism of people who actually do that “unironically”, but some people (cough cough, 12-year-olds) can’t read between the lines, and just think “guy say bad word heeehee that’s funny”. And they do it too, except now it’s without the underlying critical intent.
At least, that’s what I got from it. Who knows if you actually needed that explained to you, or maybe you just call anything you disagree with simplistic to artificially elevate yourself in an argument.

BJH pushes the idea that people CAN change and people CAN get better, but that its incredibly difficult. Thats optimistic. I definitely appreciated how the BJH writers called out Bojacks behaviour in the show when they saw how people excused his shittiness.

Rowland MS I would say that part of it is that the two use a very harsh critique of the sitcom trope of the constantly resetting status quo to different ends: Bojack Horseman to present someone who has internalised that mindset in a deeply destructive way slowly breaking free from it and creating meaning in a world without intrinsic meaning, and Rick and Morty to illustrate the existential horror of people succumbing to that stasis and treating it as a justification for never learning or attempting to change things. To be very pretentious: The latter is about staring into the abyss until the abyss stares back, as it were, while the former is more about reaching the point where one can imagine Sisyphus happy.

Then again, you need a special kind of lowbrow/suspension-of-disbelief personality trait which is rather subjective. Most people just can't afford to posses it after the age of 20: real world's struggle oftentimes makes you too tired to be silly and then it just becomes a habit. That's why many people won't even look at some of the lower-budgeted creative content, or might not notice "creative" part at all. When people have extreme fatigue there's that odd state when you know that a bit of rest will improve overall productivity, but you can't stop working even after you clearly noticed that your effectiveness dropped: you just drag. No offense, but that's how most people seem to be treating their media, so it's natural that edge humor appealed more to people who still can afford to be in a state of a nearly-constant awe.

I remember watching and enjoying filthy frank videos back in high school, and I still hold fondness in my heart for those memories. But it's always been hard to articulate why I was such a fan when I'm queer and trans and neurodivergent. Like, at some points, it would seem to the passing viewer that I was watching myself being mocked. And yet, I didn't feel like I was the punchline. As I've gotten older, liking filthy frank has remained a facet of myself that I keep more of a secret than most things because, I kinda feel like you just had to be there. There was something special about seeing a new filthy frank/idubbbz/maxmoefoe collab drop and then talking about it the next day with a close friend who also watched it. There was something special about rewatching those early music videos over and over until the album dropped.
And when I listened to fried noodles, in the context set up by the song itself and the music video, I smiled along through the shared suffering. I felt more comfortable talking about my depression and suicidality when I saw things like this that helped me laugh through it. At the precise time that music video came out, I had come out as trans a few months prior and no amount of external love aimed at me could make me more comfortable in my own skin. I truly did live in a constant state of fear and misery, and I had felt so deeply depressed for so long even prior to coming out that I indeed, didn't even notice when it hurt anymore. I entirely forgot about that until hearing that chorus in this video, played in a very different context than I've ever heard it in before.
I don't really know what to say. It's been five years since that video came out, and I hope he's happy with the new path he created for himself. And I don't really know how to articulate this further, but it hurts to remember what a dark place I was in at that time. But it hurts. And I'm noticing that.
