WanderingRandomer Me too. I guess by Quinton's logic, if we spend time watching a lot of RUclips, we're kids, even if we're 25 or older? I'm not really personally offended by that, as I don't really care and I guess for me, it's a bit true except that I'm an adult with no job(because eplilesy), no romantic relationship (because I KNOW girls don't want to date a guy like me, who's stereotypically nerdy, likes things anime, and video games, I dropped out of high school, am 25 and STILL live with my mom), and nothing else to commit to. Yeah, I'm THAT pathetic. And just when I think I can't get MORE pathetic, the girl I've had a crush on for 2 years, one of my closest friends, tells me through of our normal texts, that she KNEW I had liked her, and she felt the same way, but certain things in her personal life prevented her from acting on those feelings, and she'd been regretting that for a long time. And she wanted me to expand my horizons and not wait my entire life for her or for the next 2 years. I knew this was going end this way, but it STILL hurt WORSE than i thought it would've. It felt like being sucker punched, by someone you know, not that I'm mad at her, it's my fault. I've been rejected before, but that particular one, which happened last month hurt the most. Today, 12/5/18, a friend (adult in college) showed me (adult in college) the Stereotypes song unironically and quizzed me on what I thought was the most shocking stereotype. When I asked her who made the song she said seriously, "This project has been retired". I got flashbacks to middle school.
@@frankreads8618 I used to just love it cause it slapped. Now I've been cheated on and it was as messy as possible, so whenever the radio DOES play it I sing along loud enough to annoy the whole car.
I really like how this video discussed Ray. I never knew what happened to him and I always thought that people got the impression he was a jerk, or that some controversy about him killed his career. Even if this video points out that he wasn’t very talented, it seems like he was very passionate. Hearing that he retired from the online sphere because it was no longer fulfilling is weirdly wholesome, considering how other creators fall out of favor. I hope his stand uo career picks up, and that he and my mom continue to have lonely evenings together
His channel was also going downhill before he stopped though. His daily subs slowed from ~18k in July 2013 to ~3.5k in February 2014, just before he quit =3.
Ray is currently on TikTok, doing pretty well, I think, and I’d say that short form of content is benefiting him. I agree that =3 was very meh, only getting a light smile out of me every 5 videos, but on his TikTok, I consistently get up to a light chuckle. Maybe his writing has gotten better, maybe it’s just benefits of a different format.
Definitely the formatting of the platform, while also being in an environment where Young Tiktokers are doing stupid shit to call out on. So I'd say that helped Ray get an audience for this generation, along with reviving part of his old ones.
Stalkin' yo mom was a song by an artist called Wax, Doin' yo mom was a parody by Ray. The Stalkin' yo mom from YFM was a cover of the original song and also featured Wax for some reason.
I’m just old enough to not have had RUclips as a kid. Grew up in the sticks on native land and had a N64 and shit till I moved into a city and got with the times around the time RUclips started to become RUclips.
I remember =3 and I remember loving it. Until I stopped watching Ray's videos. Looking back I'm not like others in the comments who are saying "What was wrong with me!?" because there wasn't anything wrong with me. I *_grew out_* of his humor. There was nothing wrong with you as a kid. You liked something that appealed to kids that doesn't appeal to you at all as an adult. One might as say "What was wrong with me!?" when you remember that you liked The Teletubbies, the Wiggles, or hell that one band you listened to in middle school (you know the one) that you're embarrassed that you listened to now. You grew up and your tastes changed.
For me, that band was A Day to Remember. I understand why I liked them but now, I prefer heavier stuff. The kind of stuff that makes me wanna cut through a horde of demons rather than cut myself.
I watched him from before he got big and probably stopped at or before his peak. Looking back it is a little weird, and crazy how the internet changed.
Yeah his jokes werent gold, but =3 was how most of us actually found content to watch. Most of the clips, if you went to the original video all the comments said "RayWilliamJohnson sent me" or some shit lol. He was more of a RUclips TV Guide situation I think.
@@PongoXBongo Exactly that. The only difference is that back then the videos weren't as easy to find, the Internet was still relatively non-viral friendly. What I mean by that is the fact that it didn't spread like wild fire like they do now. They get shared everywhere with the surge of popularity for social medias. There were plenty of videos where he'd say they had 800K-1M videos and I'd never heard or had seen it. I also didn't really scour RUclips so I was less likely to see them.
5 лет назад+1
No, "most of us" didn't use =3 to find RUclips content.
I used to immeasurably love YFM. I still know the chorus to the stereotype song and I used to really like the singer that wasn't Ray. Thank you for making me relive these embarrassing memories Quinton.
I can hear one person criticise stereotypes and my brain screams THEY’RE STEREOTYPES AND IF YOU BELIEVE EM THEN YOUR BRAIN IS SMALL LIKE A KOREAN PENIS
Nah, they did have some nice songs in the beginning, like Orphan tears or Take over the World. And 7 years ago, when almost nobody did this kind of content, they were the shit
It's crazy because I remember seeing a qwop video on equals 3 a billion years ago back when I was in middle school, and now I'm 21 and happily subscribed to critikal, and had no memory until now that my first time seeing him was actually through RWJ. I thought it was the edge of glory video all this time.
I actually liked the insane simplicity of YourFavoriteMartian. It's something that didn't transition well into their second generation of music. That's what inspired me to make a documentary about them... twice!
Dude, I found your channel not long ago and I must say... you're killing it. Your content is meaningful, at least to me, and you make sense. Thank you for being a genuine and funny dude.
DammitSinged I'm glad he packed up the shit character of Fred and found a different audience, also, I knew he was gay, no one believed me! But I knew it!
I'm pretty sure that Fred was originally meant to be a few videos that just made fun of youth video-bloggers at the time. In the ultimate irony, he attracted the same audience that he was trying to lampoon and Fred became ridiculously popular. The creator milked the gimmick for maximum profit, and then dropped the routine once it got old.
Well his channel doesn't even come close to what it was before, but it's far from "dead". Besides, it was his decision to walk away from RUclips to do other stuff.
Because there was no RUclips when NonCompete was a kid. In fact, NonCompete has vivid memories of a time without the internet, although it technically already existed.
I am so glad I found your channel. You touch on a lot of things that I personally relate with (I’m 21) and that I feel like many others personally relate with. You seem to have a lot of variety in your content which is great too. I also remember the “golden age” of RUclips and I believe you hit the nail on the head. It wasn’t necessarily better but it was totally different.
He was joke bragging when it happened, not Rice Gum bragging. and when Smosh passed ray in subs, Ray passed the torch to them by having them on his show, then Smosh passed the torch to PewDiePie by having Felix on their show. I think your missing context
When did he brag about it though? The only time he 'kinda' bragged about it was when a news network reported his channel being too popular and that he was too vulgar or something like that. He never bragged about it though
gotta give him credit though. he realized he was losing his relevancy and gracefully bowed out. he didnt start being like ricegum who has to be a little bitch to claw his way through his dying channel as all the 10-12 year old girls move on to the next big douchebag.
Man, he is pretty bad when i think about it, but he holds a large part in my heart because my best friend and i would spend nights watching him and laughing our balls off.
RUclips was still somewhat new when =3 fully developed. Ray was one of the first "reactionists" and it worked, people enjoyed it for a long time, like a modern-day AMV. It also was the sort of a catalyst for such shows as Tosh.0, ridiculousness and web soup. Although his format was sort of the same through-out and he wasn't the best comedian, I believe we all enjoyed it somewhat because it was new and it kept us in the loop on viral videos.
You hit the nail on the head. The whole reason that I watched =3 was because I was too lazy to find viral content myself and my friend would always show Ray to me as an easy reference.
When we were kids my friend showed me =3 and it was so shitty I thought the videos were made by someone he knew and was just showing me his friend's project
To my 12 year old mind, Ray was a beacon of profundity and intrigue. When he would say "doin ya mom do doin ya mom" it forced me to confront the deepest parts of my psyche and ask myself, "would my mom put out for a guy who's 5'6'?"
I'm so glad you're doing a mini-series tackling this kinda topic, mainly because I love you writing and humor mixed in with it, and you have the right balance of educating and criticizing on a topic in the same video for those who don't know of the topic. I can only think of GamerfromMars who also does videos like this, but way too formal and informative and talks about it so much less interested sounding, his videos get so boring and repetitive. Shitting on a different youtuber aside I think you're the perfect one I can think of to do videos on retrospectives of older, fallen youtubers. Can't wait to see more!
Also side note about Your Favorite Martian, I remember watching that channel since its earlier uploads as a kid (and slowly starting to hate the videos once "Whip Yo Kids" uploaded as it declined in quality from there), and I've had yet to see anyone make a video about the history on this channel. I probably shouldn't say because I've wanted to out of curiosity, but I remember the whole year they hyped up making an album at MAKER Studios, then put out ONLY terrible (and out of character) cover songs and later having to scrap the album right before release date because Ray had a drunken fight over the phone with the head of MAKER (supposedly, feel free to fact check that its been a while).
ALSO Shitty G, She Looks Like Sex, Alien, Bartender (cover) were all possibly the worst ones, also if you look at the channel "THIS PROJECT IS RETIRED" That was actually the YFM channel, but in the older youtube layout where you can name the top of you channel something different than you username they wrote that when they wrapped the project. also I think a handful of songs were taken down for whatever reason. you can still find their animated series on Animonster, lol RIP MAKER.
This reminded me of the time when my brother and I would try to watch a RUclips video together, but we would have to pause it for over 10 minutes and let the bar load so that it wasn’t buffering every four seconds. Such a simpler time.
We put up with it because the bitrate of all our MP3s was just as bad. Seriously, if one of your old MP3s pops up in your playlist of new ones or .flac files, you notice instantly now
Man, even just seeing snip its of rays old videos took me BACK! I use to watch =3 videos on the day they would come out and I even remember how I found him on youtube one time when I was staying at home cause I was sick, found him and binged all of this stuff up to that point in time, I like fully felt like I was a kid sick at home again for a few seconds seeing his old stuff and hearing the sound effects.
Transphobic Techno has...NOT aged well...at all. It's like going back to an old Looney Tunes cartoon where they make fun of black people and you're like "Ohhh noooo...noooo...Grandad...you can't say things like that any more..."
I remember being an 8 year old or maybe even 7 when I watched Ray William Johnson, and I had no clue/context of any of the things he said I just laughed whenever he did something funny. And that gives me so much nostalgia
Thank you for being the first person to explain fair use and have it click in my head! I LOVE these Fallen Titans videos, I was a dumb 10 year old when youtube came out so I experienced a lot of the cringy stuff aimed at that age group firsthand. And I've basically lived on youtube since about 2010, and youtube was even the only reason I made it through some nights without killing myself. I owe a lot to youtube and its content creators, so delving into its history is fascinating to me.
Admittedly 2 minutes in, but I'm always impressed whenever I come back. You're always improving your editing, camera and audio qualities, and not even just the superficial stuff! The growth of your method is interesting and impressive in and of itself.
Now all I can remember is the Jacksfilms segment parodying YourFavoriteMartian "Shock words, shock words" and based on the title of said videos you mentioned...yep that's about it.
"Only kids have enough time for RUclips. Adults have commitments, they have relationships and they have jobs..." Aiight didn't expect to be attacked like that

For me, my memory of RWJ was from high school as "a thing that my friends and I watched at sleepovers after 2am and had a blast with." But I could never find videos I liked of his on my own. I just always loved the ones my friends showed me, whether it be sleep deprivation or that the good ones were the ones worth sharing.

The human connection threatens his worldview by putting a whole lot of gray into his black and white moral compass. It feels far safer to alienate all others and stay in his personal world (FEARFUL SYMMETRY).

Hahahahahaha I would love to know how Quinton feels about that statement.
Dead Witch Flying Sounds good, I'll check it out
Better than GFM not as good as Glink though. But looking forward to see what else is next :)
It's actually worse.
I would agree that his unannoying voice does make the video a lot less funny than most of GFM's videos.
Today, 12/5/18, a friend (adult in college) showed me (adult in college) the Stereotypes song unironically and quizzed me on what I thought was the most shocking stereotype. When I asked her who made the song she said seriously, "This project has been retired". I got flashbacks to middle school.
I'm a year late but I just wanted to let you know that this has been heard for ever bit as wretched as it is

Somebody That I Used to Know is a song by Gotye, which in its actual performance is pretty haunting. This cover is... yeah.
Yep. It really is one of the most realistic breakup songs ever.

Bar San I was.
Joseph Cocks A lot of people liked =3, that was why it was popular. You just grew up and your tastes changed.
Same.
The last sentence of this sent me
His channel was also going downhill before he stopped though. His daily subs slowed from ~18k in July 2013 to ~3.5k in February 2014, just before he quit =3.

Zyker I'd prefer a Fred video personally.
The guy who did Fred actually has a new RUclips channel.
now that's a good idea
Onision
Onision doesn't deserve to be remembered as a Titan.
That’s actually pretty cool. I loved =3 as a kid. I might check out his tiktok
Stalkin' yo mom was a song by an artist called Wax, Doin' yo mom was a parody by Ray. The Stalkin' yo mom from YFM was a cover of the original song and also featured Wax for some reason.
The idea of “youtube from when i was a kid” tossed me into the twilight zone
I’m just old enough to not have had RUclips as a kid. Grew up in the sticks on native land and had a N64 and shit till I moved into a city and got with the times around the time RUclips started to become RUclips.
youtube came out before i started going to school
I was in middle school when it first came out. Am I old yet?🤣
Ah yes the youtube of my youth, when it usually couldn't load a video and when it did it was choppy and 144p

Not too soon, but damn I still miss Robin. I felt kind of bummed seeing him with RWJ.
Just like with Smosh, I can't believe I used to love Equals Three.....
Smosh license test is still funny. Rewatched it pretty recently out of curiosity, and the humor held up even if everything else didn't.
Tbh. Smosh actually had decent skits and they at least put work into it. Most people just grew out of the humor.
Fox Goodman but RWJ is actually funny
I gotta thank RWJ for introducing me to Crit1kal though. That man is so beautiful
DragonMaiden77 I also found out about tonetta through him. Look him up, you'll be in for a treat ;)
The wiggles = everything
Yeah exactly, it was funny at the time. But that humour is long gone and considered cringy now mainly because we're all grown up
For me, that band was A Day to Remember. I understand why I liked them but now, I prefer heavier stuff. The kind of stuff that makes me wanna cut through a horde of demons rather than cut myself.
“You know the one”, let me guess, two word name, starts with an L? Either of the two?
I never really watched Ray William Johnson back during his prime. But from looking at these clips, I don't think I missed much
You didn't miss anything.
I watched him from before he got big and probably stopped at or before his peak. Looking back it is a little weird, and crazy how the internet changed.
looking back it’s definitely nostalgic but not super memorable. to me it serves as like a monument of old youtube
Yeah his jokes werent gold, but =3 was how most of us actually found content to watch. Most of the clips, if you went to the original video all the comments said "RayWilliamJohnson sent me" or some shit lol. He was more of a RUclips TV Guide situation I think.
"us" as opposed to skimming the front page of all those viral video websites. That's all he did.
Moses Primm You're acting like it was that hard to look for content on RUclips at the time.
@@soup6874 Some of us try to avoid the plague-infested Trending page.
No, "most of us" didn't use =3 to find RUclips content.
I used to immeasurably love YFM. I still know the chorus to the stereotype song and I used to really like the singer that wasn't Ray. Thank you for making me relive these embarrassing memories Quinton.

I thought it was the edge of glory video all this time.

I actually liked the insane simplicity of YourFavoriteMartian. It's something that didn't transition well into their second generation of music. That's what inspired me to make a documentary about them... twice!

So I guess you wish him dead...!?
DammitSinged I'm glad he packed up the shit character of Fred and found a different audience, also, I knew he was gay, no one believed me! But I knew it!
I'm pretty sure that Fred was originally meant to be a few videos that just made fun of youth video-bloggers at the time. In the ultimate irony, he attracted the same audience that he was trying to lampoon and Fred became ridiculously popular. The creator milked the gimmick for maximum profit, and then dropped the routine once it got old.

How could you forget that ten years ago was the golden age of RUclips poop?
Cornelius Funk 2010-2013 was the golden age of RUclips Poop.
what? how old are you?
It feels weird Rays channel is dead, it doesn't feel that long ago when he was the most popular.
Dead? It has over 10 million subscribers, what are you talking about?
CidGuerreiro1234 but look at the views compared to the subscribers
CidGuerreiro1234 ray was up 12% on subscribers this month, by *losing* 22,000 subs
Well his channel doesn't even come close to what it was before, but it's far from "dead". Besides, it was his decision to walk away from RUclips to do other stuff.

Yeah! Specifically maybe around Warning, the Waiting music video shows this well.
BJA Chipotle edition.
owo what's this Discount BJA lyrics too
Holy crap, he does look like a bargain bin BJA
Ah, Ray once bragged about being the most popular channel, how times have changed
Salokin not to defend ray, but did he not have the right to brag since he was?
[Ids5621-Retro] it being true does not mean bragging isn't obnoxious though, and he's worth being criticized over it
He was joke bragging when it happened, not Rice Gum bragging. and when Smosh passed ray in subs, Ray passed the torch to them by having them on his show, then Smosh passed the torch to PewDiePie by having Felix on their show.
I actually looked over at my own copy of Watchmen on my shelf as you were ripping up your copy just to make sure mine was ok.

Yeeeaaahhh boooiiii new quinton video
I totally forgot about Ray William Johnson's music, I didn't realize how horrible it sounded back then.
We put up with it because the bitrate of all our MP3s was just as bad.
Seriously, if one of your old MP3s pops up in your playlist of new ones or .flac files, you notice instantly now
It's been just long enough that it finally has come back around to having ridiculous ironic meme potential

It's like going back to an old Looney Tunes cartoon where they make fun of black people and you're like "Ohhh noooo...noooo...Grandad...you can't say things like that any more..."
Transphobic techno makes as much sense as homophobic house music.

it didn't even age well back then
it was disliked to hell and back even then
I cant be offended by transphobic techno because the only lyrics are "BITCH GOT A PENIS"
I mean for the majority of people it hasn't aged that well. Its still very common and socially acceptable to think poorly of trans people.
