Very little point in this video. Literally nobody cares. Old news. Did you know when selling gold they had to reproduce the store in a studio? Long complicated reasons why, but that is what they had to do. Others have done this s 300% better . I won't be buying any merch.

In a similar vein of shows with depressing natures; the original concept for “Storage Wars” involved tracking down the owners of the abandoned storage units. Inevitably they discovered that the units were abandoned through poverty or death, which made bad tv. So they reformatted in a way that ignores the depressing truth.
My gambling dad lost the storage with my N64 and games so I wish they had found us lmao.
People that pay for storage to horse items they never use, I don’t feel that bad they are in Poverty. They wasted so much money they needed storage and thought their material possessions were more important than financial security.

@@scaredfolks5923 nah. we got a storage unit because we got kicked out of our rental, became so poor we never got our stuff back again. alot of irreplaceable things gone. sure, its definitely situational, but alot of the times the person loosing it has lost something worth alot more to themselves than anyone else.
I was on the show in Season 4 and here are my notes...
The "family" segments are entirely made up. Everything -- from them being in the store, ever, waiting for stuff to show up, to how many kids Rick has is fake. If you see them speaking dialog and it's not to someone selling something, it's fiction.
The customer segments can be broken down into four types. Sellers, Found Sellers, Fake Sellers and Celebrity Encounters.
Sellers (people like me) approach the production company with an item they would like to sell, and if they like it, they ask Rick if he wants to look at it. If he likes it they schedule you for a filming date/time. Most sellers know they aren't getting full price for their item and (like me) are willing to exchange that for a few moments of TV time. (I suspect some go on the show thinking they will get over on Rick and make more than they could elsewhere.)
Found Sellers are usually people in the Las Vegas area who have listed something interesting on eBay, Craigslist, etc... and were contacted by the producers before TPS shows up. They almost never want to sell for TPS prices, but on rare occasions Rick will pay their asking price.
Fake Sellers are people that have no interest in selling to TPS but have cool stuff that the producers want to showcase. Of note would be Jesse Amoroso and members of his staff at Cowtown guitars and the number of cars that showed up when they were filming Counting Cars.
Celebrity Encounters are obvious and mentioned in this video. It started with Bob Dylan and slowly got more and more blatant and bad over every season.
This video gets the "Seller" segment filming a bit wrong. On any given day the store is filled with tourists buying Pawn Stars logo merch. Shirts, coins, DVDs and autographed pictures, which, btw, I saw signed by interns on the back dock. When filming is about to start they empty the store, except for the seller and their guests. Those guests become the background customers - and if the seller has no guests, they will pull a few from the tourists lined up outside. That's when TPS walk into the shop and get set up for filming. Background people are not allowed to talk. The seller is asked to go outside and walk in with their item - which has been in TPS hands since the seller showed up over an hour earlier.
My segment didn't have an "expert" but I'm quite certain that if one was called for, the expert would have been in back with TPS googling or otherwise getting info on the item. No doubt they were told what would be walking in the door before they showed up to film, but they do have hands-on time alone with the item before filming starts as well.
My segment did have Chum - who is so smart her had to be fed his "dumb" comments from a producer. The segments where TPS and the customer talk about the item are largely unscripted. For me, Chum was fed "dumb" comments but my interaction with Rick was largely what you for to see in the episode that aired. The producers were also very clear that when it came to the price negotiation I was on my own with Rick. That part is 100% genuine and what aired was 100% what happened. After this they film some B roll footage (closeups, etc...) and I was directed to the cash register to fill out the sales paperwork. After that, they take you outside to film the bit about what you hope to sell it for. You ever see someone get that price exactly right? That's how they do it.
I stopped watching around 2015 because they started focusing more and more on the family dialog stuff and they had less and less interesting items. As much as I enjoy Rebecca Romney nerding out over books, it was obvious they were just finding excuses to bring her into an episode because she was more fun to look at than... well, everyone else on the show.
Oh and the item I sold... it's still at the shop. After my episode aired, people started looking around their homes and found so many copies of what I sold that the prices on eBay tanked. They can't sell my item without taking a loss over what they paid me. They could have offered me 10% of what they paid me and I'd have said yes just to make sure they used my segment!
Oh and no - they do not pay to fly you to Vegas or stay in a hotel. Everyone always asks.

I worked on this show for about a year in post production and this account largely squares with the footage I had to work with (first in transcription, later in story editing).
Particularly the part about Chumlee. Dude is definitely not an idiot and they just hammed it up for entertainment value.
People have always given The Real World (another show I worked on) shit about it being scripted/contrived but it was actually far less so than shows like PS or anything on HGTV (also worked for their production company Sonicpool, awesome company).

As someone with most of their childhood possessions either sitting in someone else's home or in a dumpster due to my family having to sell pretty much everything we own to a pawn shop just to keep our house, only to lose our house after we had nothing left, this episode resonates with me. Thanks for touching on the predatory nature of pawn shops and how this show disgustingly glorifies one of the worst times of my life that informs every action or opinion I've taken or made since.
According to Pat the NES Punk... the show literally just brought him in to show off those cartridges - as some sort of a historical, educational “show and tell” to the audience. He had absolutely zero intention of selling them. Same thing applied to that one guy trying to “sell” his ultra rare, $50,000 sealed copy of Super Mario Bros.
Okay. Why is a copy of super Mario bros worth 50k? I'm sure it's not just because its sealed. A fuck heap of those games were made. Is it some sort of special edition?

*While Nintendo was test marketing the NES in New York in 1985, they sealed games by putting a sticker on top of the box instead of shrink wrapping them.

It’s a joke, I know.
But I don’t understand the origins. I’ve never felt that the pawn star crew is ripping anyone off. Only the customers who think the rusty tin can from WW2 is worth 10,000 feel like they’re ripped off. There’s even times Rick offers more than they’re asking bc he is specifically trying to give them a fair deal. People just don’t seem to understand that the pawn shop is the most convenient option of making money, not the most fruitful. They go to the store that’ll buy anything, and then think the pawn crew should be begging them for it.

@@austinschmidt8228 I dont think what you said is the case in most instances. The pawn shop owners very clearly and often devalue rare and expensive items brought in. Case and point is the guy with the Charizard Pokemon cards, who not only got lowballed but was continually disrespected during his interview with the pawn shop owners. Ended up selling his cards for millions while the pawn shop owners were severely low-balling him down to the thousands and repeatedly ignoring his and the person they brought in to authenticate the cards' claims. Its honestly ridiculous that these guys stay in business considering how often they low-ball customers.

people who are poor and desperate are still poor and desperate whether they turn this specific pawn shop down or not, Especially before the internet was more common place and selling online was easier.
hell, even now if your issue is that you can't pay rent by the end of the month then you may not be able to Wait for your item to be bought for what it's worth. that's the trap of being poor, you lose out on options to make or save money because of short term need that can't be ignored
if you look at the situation in a vacuum then yes, poor people aren't being held at gunpoint to sell to this specific person, but the criticism is not about this particular interaction or these particular people, it's about an industry that exists to exploit. All pawn shops exist to make a profit, and making a profit in this case is buying items for less than they're worth to sell them for more.
pawn shops are predatory because they're an Industry, loans are predatory because they're an Industry, landlords are predatory because they're an Industry. saying that this specific transaction doesn't have to happen means absolutely nothing because poor people without any options are still poor.

I was playing Street Fighter with my brother who doesn't normally play fighting games, and he asked who I was picking. I told him Chun Li and he thought I said Chum Lee, and it led to a lot of confusion since I didn't know what Pawn Stars was at the time. we still laugh about it every now and again.

More than a year later we have 8 hours of icarly content.
I didn’t know what the recession was at the time, but my family would watch pawn stars fairly often. A few years later my mom took us to a pawn shop trying to sell our great grandmother’s silverware, only to find out they weren’t silver. We were in a tough spot, and my mom started crying after hearing that. I didn’t watch pawn stars after that, it really is sad to think about the people going in there to sell stuff.
I was in Vegas walking through a casino and saw Chumlee walk by with a gorgeous woman that was at least a foot taller than him (guessing escort). What a life changing event for him.

The original pawn Stars was antiques roadshow. none of the stupid sensationalized scripted b plot, just cool items getting appraised, giving the viewer an opportunity to learn the history about them. this is why we need public television.

This video made me remember all those storage-unit auction shows that were really popular around the same time. Those kinda shows also tried to be funny while totally ignoring the really sad parts (like the people who lost all their things) while focusing on overblown personalities of the buyers, fake drama for the show, and “oh look, cool stuff!”
Two years later and this video is still great. I want to share an anecdote about the Old Man:
I live in a small town in North Carolina. About ten years ago (give or take) I was at church when my mom said we would have to leave a little early because there was some kind of family reunion going on in the fellowship hall. We usually leave through the back entrance that goes through the fellowship hall so when I went through there were big posterboards everywhere with lots of family photos and stuff, think like a science fair. As we were getting in the car, my mom’s niece calls her and says the Old Man was on the other side of the parking lot and it was his family reunion. It was really weird to leave church and see a celebrity while driving by, he was smoking a cigarette and was snuffing it out as we left.
Several months later I had History channel on while I was doing my homework and the Old Man wasn’t in an episode, and Rick said it was because he was “at a church in North Carolina for a reunion”. Absolutely wild.
my relationship to this show is that one time my grandpa referred to it as “porn stars” and that memory is seared into my brain.
"Hey son wanna watch porn stars with your grandfather" " No Grandpa I don't want to watch pornstars with my grandpa" "I meant pawn stars" "Sure I will watch pawn stars why not im bored"
My English accent can be a bit rough on the edges since it's my second language, anyway... I used to work in this small office in London and came in on Monday, a colleague asked how was my weekend... I know how I sounded since everyone blushed... "I went to the "pooon" shop and got some DVDs, watched some nasty stuff!"

To me the entire appeal of the show is the weird objects that people bring, the interesting history behind it and the expectation of the price reveal at the end, everything else is a waste of time and i couldn't care less about it

Honestly I've found American Pickers to be the better of all these shows. You can actually tell Mike and Frank actually like what they do unlike the Pawn Stars which are at the day scumbags

Btw, almost no relation with what you said really, i was kind of confused about what show you were talking about when you mentioned "American Pickers" and i just realized, History shows have a tendency to have their names changed when translated to something kind of unrelated or simplified, and for some reason this really surprised me, although it happens with movies and games sometimes; In Latin America, at least, was translated to "Treasure Hunters"
At least in that show you actually learn historical facts in between and mike and Frank throw trivia around. Sure a lot of it is scripted but the show has honestly taught me a lot about what people owned and valued back then
American Pickers has been and always be the better show. I love Mike and Frank & they know what they’re talking about, will offer more money for stuff if they know it’s worth more than what the seller says, and there’s no like reality tv moments apart from when they’re in the van

@Lex Bright Raven I definitely liked American Pickers more than Pawn Stars. American Pickers had two guys buying other people’s “junk” and was a lot less depressing than people pawning off their treasured, sentimental items in desperation.
I think we all know iCarly is going to get a reboot in 15 years once Zoomers are old enough for nostalgia marketers.

What I'm bothered by with this error is mostly that Zantac (Ranitidine, an antacid) hasn't been available in North America for about a year due to contamination with cancer-causing agents and it was the best shit for heartburn. Nexium and Prilosec cause sudden cardiac failure after extended use. Also I like the idea that Chumly was selling illegal antacid.

That is I believe the primary aim of the show. It’s purely a vehicle to show off cool historical shit. That’s why it was created by the History Channel
I noticed this pretty hard when i was watching the show. The longer you watch the show, the more you notice the dry acting and 'Ive got a friend who knows alot about this' and they always happen to be nearby. Its so grating.
I saw a meme about this that's been in my head ever since. I'll do my best to do it justice with just words and no pictures.

People absolutely didn’t realize how smart Chum was. There’s an episode where he rips up this sneaker head trying to oversell a baseline pair of jordans. He makes such quick work of the kid and it’s absolutely savage.

The old man died, so to honor him they stopped the show. Chum got some illegal gun possession charges but the family paid and he never went to jail. The only one that keeps being active is Chum having a RUclips channel focused on Pokemon Trading Cards

Actually the show is still going on. Chumlee was never really put in prison, he was sentenced to 3 years probation however for charges of attempted drug possession and felony weapons charges. The show is in its 17 season as of now.

Honestly, as a kid I only watched the show for the parts when they talk about the historical background of an item.
It was really weird watching the Star Wars episode, everything in that episode would have sold faster than lightning and they didn't buy it, or know anything about it.
History Channel used to be one of my favorite channels back in the 1990's but then they want full reality TV and I had to file for divorce.
My wife was one of my favorite people in the 90s. Then she went full in with the milk man and I had to file for divorce.

I legitimately never knew what pawning was until now. I always assumed that pawn stores were just as you put it "douchey" Goodwills or any other type of thrift store really. I just assumed that the items and clientele were different. And that was that.

I would love to see similar video-essay about Storage Wars. I know that it's likely a 100% bullshit but my mum stumbled upon that and this series just now (living overseas) so I am pretty curious about the history of that.
I was a massive fan of Storage Wars back in 2011 or so. It was scripted and staged af. More so than Pawn Stars.

I always found it among the least offensive of debatable history stuff that really kicked off in the late 2000s and has continued. It has some degree of connection to history and at bare minimum wasn't pseudo-history like Ancient Aliens, Nostradamus Effect and Hunting Hitler.

The interesting bit of Pawn Stars is the bits where they talk about the items and the history is interesting. The rest you just kind of cringe through. Also I don't know the host of the quiz show, but he looks like an off model Joel McHale? Not trying to be mean, he just looks similar.
He had his own sitcom about dysfunctional and abusive families called "Titus" that ran for 3 seasons from 2000 to 2003. I loved that show as a kid cos my family was also dysfunctional and abusive, and I rewatched it as an adult and it still holds up beyond some misogynistic jokes.
If the only part you like is the bit with the items and history I'd recommend Antiques Roadshow. My parents love it and it's pretty much just person after person coming in with a semi-rare item and they have a specific expert talk about it.
I remember my grandparents on my father side once went to the pawn star store for a vacation, however they were treated like crap and only got a picture with Chumley after they asked. And then they were basically chased off because how DARE they be fans of the show. Needless to say I always got a sour taste in my mouth whenever I think about this show.
I died at the part where Chumlee's room for coke and strippers was called " The chum chum room"

I only saw one episode of this show and it was one where a gentleman came in with a very old book. With expert consultation the book turned out to have been printed by Benjamin Franklin himself on his personal printing press. They were like, "Well, the pages are torn so best I can do is like $50." Or something. The gentleman left with his book hopefully to sell to some private collector for the thousands it was worth.
And yeah it's hard to believe pawn shops still exist in the era of eBay.

I love how Quinton uploads this while I’m on a pawn stars binge. It’s almost a guilty pleasure. I love watching it for the history aspect, but the reality aspect is always a little wrong.
