Toby is originally from Niceville, Florida. As someone from the area, I can testify that there really is a persistent and deceptively widespread drug problem. It would be hard to grow up in the area and NOT be exposed to it in some way. It's unsurprising to me to think that this is something he has struggled with for a while.

When I was younger I saw Tobuscus’s video series about how he would go to comic con and just approach random women and say “hothothothothot” at one point he kissed a girl without her permission. I watched that video recently and realized that that was the least of the stuff he’s done. Although still disgusting.

She falsely accused him of rape, with no evidence, and even counter evidence, and got away with it. Chocolate Rain was the old internet's "This is America." A song that has a lot to say in its lyrics and in its performance about the state of the world around it, and yet most people got introduced to it expressly because people thought it was funny. Tay Zonday embraced the meme of it at the time, making commercials and so on while he was still in the lime light (no judgement, but doing stuff for Dr. Pepper is not exactly what the original song was about obviously), whereas the genius of "This is America" is that it not only expressly expected that response, but the song at least in part is about how that response is used to ignore and to mitigate the message of black performers, himself included. No one remembers Chocolate Rain as a song about systemic racism because it's a funny man moving away from the mic to breathe in. And a lot of people probably (especially at first) missed the point of "This is America" because it's a funny man doing wacky dances... all of which are taken directly from minstrel traditions.
The crazy thing is that back when it came out, when I was literally like 12 years old, I actually totally understood the message and used to tell people that it was a lot deeper than people seemed to be realizing and they'd call me dumb and laugh at how I thought this "dumb meme song" had any sort of message.
The difference is that chocolate rain is sutble and you can enjoy the song without knowing its purpose. TIA is preachy, unsutble and is entierly reliant on its music video to get its point across.
that last part about the me too movement, is one of the better descriptors of why i tend to not immediately assume that the accusers of sexual assault are lying, and at least ask for decent responses from the accused. I understand thay we never will know the truth behind a sexual crime, mostly because the nature of this type of crimes make them imposible to leave evidence behind, like i was abused for two years but the only thing that i have to back it up are my memories. For this reason when you look this situations you always are the possibility of being wrong, or you defend a women who is a liar and try to ruin a mens life, or you defend a rapist that already ruin this women life... you wil NEVER KNOW THE TRUTH. So is a personal choice decide with what mistake they can live... because whathever you choose to belive you are choosing to turn your back in the other side... for me, i cannot live knowing that i stand a rapist, i just cant. It was honestly less that they were his best lines and more that they're the stuff he always falls back on. So, as someone who used to watch his content, they were kind-of like these weird recurring gags that were never really funny but they stuck around because they kept coming up until that was just sort-of the thing he did? Looking back, none of Toby's content was really that great, but there was at least a weird entertainment that came from going to a channel and knowing exactly what you were going to get, you know? When you said that men identify with the accused because that's their fear, you legitimately changed my perspective on why the disparity exists. As a woman who has been assaulted, I couldn't understand, but that makes so much sense and it hurts, honestly. I was at an open mic night once that turned into stories and poems and music about assault, and the one man who went up did so to talk about his friend being accused, which he claimed was false. All of the women were uncomfortable.
10 years ago I had an onlime friend who was obsesses with Tobuscus. She'd quote him, draw fanart, and would excitedly talk about hoping to meet him one day. I am SO, so glad she never did. Jesus Christ.

Seeing Quentin’s content evolve over the years has been amazing. It hasn’t just been his content that has improved, but his character (not that Quentin hasn’t been anything less than wonderful, but you can definitely see a change from his ser videos) and relationship with his supporters has. I appreciate the intro warning. Before the whole idea of "being triggered" became a meme, it was a stable of CBT. You would often hear "know your triggers, and try to avoid them or be prepared for them." All it took was a few narcissistic people to take that to mean "impose your will on others to force them to avoid presenting you with a trigger." It was always supposed to be something you did in your head, not an imposition. Now a lot of therapists will never utter the word "trigger" because of the few that ruined it. All that said, I always really appreciated when someone put up a warning without my asking. I dont need them, that's not how CBT works, but it can still be very helpful.
Gunhaver THIS. Trigger warnings have ALWAYS been a thing in media, from the 'parental guidance is suggested,' to 'This episode may have some disturbing scenes. Discretion is advised.' I'm not sure why people think thus is a new thing. Many people have triggers. I agree that the increase in open narcissism is a factor in the resistance to acknowledgement of them.
I wonder if that was one of the pressures for the newest edition of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) having a lot of reworded sections (but the structure has stayed the same with a few extra sections and comprehensiveness - generally I think it was an improvement). Namely, there was one about Triggers and developing Action Plans in response to them. Now it uses "Stressors" instead. Which might be more comprehensive/broad. Stressors might not throw you straight into Crisis Mode - but they can make it easier for that to happen if not dealt with. (On another related note - this reminds me of something called "Fork Theory", a corollary to "Spoon Theory" from the larger disability community. This is just my experience, but I've seen way more harm done to the validity of the word 'triggered' by people making it into a joke than by people using it frivilously. Don't get me wrong, those people do exist. I think at one point there wasn't enough education out there about what it meant so some people used it about things that upset them rather than triggered a trauma response. But those people aren't the ones who make me scared of using the word to describe my trauma responses. It's the people who turn every use of the word into a chance to make a 'lol triggered' joke. And the worst part is that there's a whole generation of people who have only ever encountered the word in the 'lol triggered' sense, so it's really hard to try and explain to them that it's an actual psychological term that people need to use. I'm just saying, I think those 'narcissistic people' you talk about are a way smaller issue than the people who've turned the whole concept into a joke. I know some people will argue that the jokes exist to make fun of those people, but it ends up with people like me as collateral damage. There's also the fact that you can't really tell if someone's traumatised by just looking at them, so I'd rather just believe people and respect their requests for trigger warnings. Believing someone who's exaggerating or has misunderstood what triggers mean seems a far less bad outcome than not believing someone who needs the trigger warning.

Chocolate Rain was the old internet's "This is America." A song that has a lot to say in its lyrics and in its performance about the state of the world around it, and yet most people got introduced to it expressly because people thought it was funny. Tay Zonday embraced the meme of it at the time, making commercials and so on while he was still in the lime light (no judgement, but doing stuff for Dr. Pepper is not exactly what the original song was about obviously), whereas the genius of "This is America" is that it not only expressly expected that response, but the song at least in part is about how that response is used to ignore and to mitigate the message of black performers, himself included. No one remembers Chocolate Rain as a song about systemic racism because it's a funny man moving away from the mic to breathe in. And a lot of people probably (especially at first) missed the point of "This is America" because it's a funny man doing wacky dances... all of which are taken directly from minstrel traditions.
The crazy thing is that back when it came out, when I was literally like 12 years old, I actually totally understood the message and used to tell people that it was a lot deeper than people seemed to be realizing and they'd call me dumb and laugh at how I thought this "dumb meme song" had any sort of message.
The difference is that chocolate rain is sutble and you can enjoy the song without knowing its purpose. TIA is preachy, unsutble and is entierly reliant on its music video to get its point across.
Chocolate Rain has the same feel as Hey Ya. It sounds cool and fun, but it has a dark undertone.

I just wanted to say that because of the shape of the crystals in kosher salt, you would get less salt packed into a certain volume than if you used regular table salt. Then I clicked on Tobuscus's channel to try and find "Allergy Rant" and instead that transphobic dog video autoplayed. "Oh, oh no." I said out loud to myself. Then I saw comments about how "This is hilarious! Too bad it won't get views because of some accusations that probably aren't even true" and I never clicked another Tobuscus video again. When you said that men identify with the accused because that's their fear, you legitimately changed my perspective on why the disparity exists. As a woman who has been assaulted, I couldn't understand, but that makes so much sense and it hurts, honestly.
I was at an open mic night once that turned into stories and poems and music about assault, and the one man who went up did so to talk about his friend being accused, which he claimed was false. All of the women were uncomfortable.

I appreciate the intro warning. Before the whole idea of "being triggered" became a meme, it was a stable of CBT. You would often hear "know your triggers, and try to avoid them or be prepared for them." All it took was a few narcissistic people to take that to mean "impose your will on others to force them to avoid presenting you with a trigger." It was always supposed to be something you did in your head, not an imposition. Now a lot of therapists will never utter the word "trigger" because of the few that ruined it.
All that said, I always really appreciated when someone put up a warning without my asking. I dont need them, that's not how CBT works, but it can still be very helpful.

I'm not sure why people think thus is a new thing. Many people have triggers. I agree that the increase in open narcissism is a factor in the resistance to acknowledgement of them.

I wonder if that was one of the pressures for the newest edition of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) having a lot of reworded sections (but the structure has stayed the same with a few extra sections and comprehensiveness - generally I think it was an improvement).
Namely, there was one about Triggers and developing Action Plans in response to them.
Now it uses "Stressors" instead. Which might be more comprehensive/broad. Stressors might not throw you straight into Crisis Mode - but they can make it easier for that to happen if not dealt with.

This is just my experience, but I've seen way more harm done to the validity of the word 'triggered' by people making it into a joke than by people using it frivilously.
Don't get me wrong, those people do exist. I think at one point there wasn't enough education out there about what it meant so some people used it about things that upset them rather than triggered a trauma response. But those people aren't the ones who make me scared of using the word to describe my trauma responses. It's the people who turn every use of the word into a chance to make a 'lol triggered' joke. And the worst part is that there's a whole generation of people who have only ever encountered the word in the 'lol triggered' sense, so it's really hard to try and explain to them that it's an actual psychological term that people need to use.
I'm just saying, I think those 'narcissistic people' you talk about are a way smaller issue than the people who've turned the whole concept into a joke. I know some people will argue that the jokes exist to make fun of those people, but it ends up with people like me as collateral damage.
There's also the fact that you can't really tell if someone's traumatised by just looking at them, so I'd rather just believe people and respect their requests for trigger warnings. Believing someone who's exaggerating or has misunderstood what triggers mean seems a far less bad outcome than not believing someone who needs the trigger warning.
