    I think it would be fun if he did a more open version of this episode, of what in your house could you eat? could you eat tooth paste? could you eat paper? could you eat soap? if you have an "ornamental" plant, could you eat it? ( a plant that isnt used for food) can I eat candle wax? etc.

    • @derekeastman7771
      @derekeastman7771 2 года назад +44

      If your plant is both real and non-toxic you can eat it. The nutritional value isn’t going to be great, and it’ll probably taste about like grass, but calories are calories. Toothpaste shouldn’t be swallowed, so that’s a no go. Paper isn’t toxic, but I doubt there’s much in there that’s worth eating. Pretty much we make food out of what’s edible and everything else out of what isn’t. Also wouldn’t recommend soap, even if it isn’t toxic it’s just a chemical in water. No calories or nutrition. Candle wax is also just a chemical, wouldn’t recommend.

    • @plzletmebefrank
      @plzletmebefrank 2 года назад +14

      Paper is cellulose. Tooth paste... Has chemicals you don't really want to ingest and is mostly stuff for cleaning plus grit. Soap is a terrible idea, altering the surface tension and viscosity of the water in your guts is a bad idea unless your goal is to have the runs. Plus it emulsifies fats which would make it harder to digest other actually beneficial substances.
      If you had beeswax, that may be an option. I don't know enough about the chemical structure of it. Candlewax though... Fairly certain that's a bad idea but again, don't know enough about it. And I'm too lazy to look those up.
      And most plants that are ornamental are largely cellulose. Might be able to eat the root, bark, seeds, or sprouts though, depending.
      Honestly, you'd be better off eating wild plants. There's plenty of edible options out and about, less so in your house (besides what was made to be eaten).

    Theory Idea: Can you just survive on vitamins and supplements? In your spinach video you mentioned that at a certain point you would get more nutrients from supplements. Even if one can't solely survive on supplements, what's the minimal amount of things one could eat while still being in perfect health? IDK just a fun thought! ^_^

    • @rebekahthelin2238
      @rebekahthelin2238 2 года назад +52

      From what I know about nutrition, you wouldn't be able to be perfectly healthy if you're not getting enough calories. Anytime you're in a negative energy balance, meaning you expend more energy than you're consuming, you're going to be losing weight. I'm not sure exactly at what point that weight loss would start negatively affecting you, but, it would essentially eventually start looking/acting like starvation. Just vitamin supplements don't have calories, which are just as necessary to bodily functions as vitamins and minerals. Though, I would be interested in seeing the difference between complete starvation and starvation with vitamins. The Minnisota Starvation Experiment found some interesting data on how vitamins affect starving people, so if you're interested you should totally go research that! It's neat! :D

If you are somewhere cold and you are shivering all the time, youll burn way more enrgy then if you are somewhere with a warm temperature, and light breeze. If you are going to be needing to get firewood or do extra tasks other than wait, i think your correct. But from what ive seen from people who spend long periods of time fasting, if you arent doing much of anything, (just resting or meditating) your body wont need that much fuel for awhile

    Weirdly enough, my 7th grade history teacher let my class watch a recreation of cannibalism during westward expansion(I think?). The group got hit with an unexpected snow storm, and the people ate their food rations; then the horses, babies, children, women- until only one traumatized man was left. A pair of travelers then stumbled along him, seeing bloody snow, clothes and bones everywhere. That’s all I remember, and I don’t know the title of it.

    There was once an Italian man named Michelle Lotito, who had a absolutely unique stomach and digestive system. I don’t know the specifics, but it was something along the lines of double layered walls, unlike us with single layers. This allowed him to eat anything from wood, to metal, to glass and even rubber. He cut it into mouth sized pieces with a saw and swallowed it with a lot of sparkling water. And, believe it or not fellas, he died of old age with 78 years to his name.

    Maybe do a food theory on how you could have also survived in the area around Baba Yaga's cabin- I find it odd that there's nothing to hunt, and after a long rain, I'd assume there'd be shrooms or bugs living in rotting trees, or worms buried in the ground under trees. Even finding a rotten carcass or bones could be used to create some manner of stock. Finding one mushroom, you could also use that massive dark, damp basement to grow mushrooms, etc.
    Obviously, a sign the main character is evil/possessed is because they mislead or discourage obvious actions, preying on the survivor's cluelessness about survival and trusting nature. They probably could have left at any time, or left together- but stayed behind out of fear of the unknown.

    As a spiritual discipline my dad went on a 14 day fast. That was probably the happiest I have ever seen him. He was euphoric to the point of being creepy. Of course this was not a trapped in the woods type scenario. He was able to wean himself off with a liquid diet for a couple days and then at the end of it wean himself back into eating with liquid diet. Still though. You’re not even starving after eight days. In fact you might even be in a good mood because the hunger pains fade away after the first couple of days. Our bodies are designed to function in as many different scenarios as possible. If you find yourself starving move as little as possible. Meditate. Take deep slow breaths and relax. A big indicator of what your experience will be is the attitude you have going into it.
    I am not a survival expert. This is just from my personal experience through observation. Take this comment with a grain of salt.

      Bear in mind that the men in that one story were a) likely in good shape and b) trying to steer lifeboats, which would make it impossible for them to remain still. (Depending on the weather, this might have forced them to be highly active.) That actually means they'd be starving even on a higher number of calories than the average person.
      Decades ago, there was a study where a group of coal miners were put on a diet of 1200 calories a day. They entered a starvation state quite quickly (I want to say after about a week, although I could be remembering that wrong), despite the fact that they were still eating something daily. The problem was that they were big men who were highly active, and their caloric requirement was so high that 1200 kcal was still not even close to enough. They all became utterly obsessed with food, and reported thinking about nothing else.

      @@bluesonicstreak7317 Yes! Nuanced details are everything! It is wrong to judge other people. You can judge whether or not an action is right or wrong but don’t judge the person because there are way too many details that need to be known for an accurate judgment to ever work.
      That is the funny thing about life though. Life-threatening situations aren’t convenient. That’s why self-defense in fake martial arts are such a dangerous thing. When things happen in real life they are often times a lot different than in practice. When the adrenal stress response hits you’re going to lose 3/4 of your skill. That means if you want to perform under extreme pressure then you need to be four times as good as what is required. That is assuming that this is a scenario that you are practiced for. If you get surprised by some thing new then you could still be rendered useless.
      Just because you know what to do when you get caught on fire doesn’t mean that you will have the presence of mind to respond appropriately when you are burning. Same true with starving.

    Something I've been wondering about for a while was how people digest medication like how different types of capsules affect how long it lasts and how does that go up to the brain idk understanding why things happen is really cool

    • @rhyanisyes4512
      @rhyanisyes4512 2 года назад

      If you're talking about instant release vs. extended release medication:
      Instant release dissolves very quickly in your body after it's ingested and goes into your bloodstream, which is how it gets to the brain. This leads to a rapid spike in the amount of medication and thus takes effect quicker, but it leaves your system very quickly and can increase the risk of side effects.
      Extended release (XR or ER) medications have special coatings or other ingredients mixed in (what exactly they are and how they work is kinda complicated, so you can look into stuff like microencapsulation if you want) which make it dissolve slower and release the medication into your bloodstream at a steady rate over a longer period of time, so there is no big spike. It takes longer for XR medicine to take effect and you can't crush or cut it, but it reduces the likelihood of side effects and the number of doses you have to take.
      Different medications will also go to different areas of the body or brain. For example, a pain reliever like ibuprofen blocks injured or damaged cells from releasing prostaglandin, a chemical that nerve endings are highly sensitive to and triggers them to transmit pain signals, so if cells don't make it, the brain doesn't get the pain signals as quickly or clearly. Another pain reliever like acetaminophen, however, blocks the production of an enzyme in the brain, which stops the brain from transmitting more pain signals. Medicines like SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptike inhibitors), or NDRIs (norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors) work differently. They block neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine from being reabsorbed into neurons, which can help relieve symptoms of anxiety or depression. There are a ton more medicines out there, but that's the general idea.
      Hopefully that answers your question!
