so crazy idea...what exactly causes "after-taste?" are there certain food groups that are doomed to have it, or is there a way that we could create foods with good aftertastes?
@@paisleesheppard5629 I would guess it’s more likely tonsils, as they provide some of the taste, but the taste buds provide most, and the taste buds are right at the front of the mouth (on the tongue), so those aren’t really after taste, more just taste in general
current scientific understanding is that aftertaste is simply the taste of the molecules after all of the chemical and physical interactions are mostly completed. remember that your mouth is full of mainly water, amylase and lingual lipase all of which will do organic chemistry things to the food inside your mouth. then when you swallow the more sticky stuff (stuff with stronger intermolecular forces or charged ions actually bonding to the inside of your mouth) will be left behind, and your taste receptors will begin sensing those things instead of the wine and fish you just swallowed. don't drink wine and fish, it smells. anyways, yes, there have been breakthroughs in chemicals that can block the taste receptors sensing these specific aftertaste-making molecules. however if i'm being honest the only real cost effective use for it is in really disgusting medicines that need to be prescribed to children; a lot of the pharmaceutical engineering behind children's medicines is making them taste nice.
"Can You Stay Hydrated From Food Alone?" would be a good theory. All marine mammals get water purely from food, and I often wonder if that would be possible for humans, considering that there's many vegetables and fruits that are over 90% water, such as lettuce.
Yep, the “8 cups of water a day” is for total dietary consumption. Most people get enough from their food, but since we still tend to get thirsty, we _do_ sometimes need to supplement. Of course, supplementation is super easy, right?
@@MV12267 The whole point here is that it’s not “liquids”, your daily water intake is often covered by things we presume to be solids. The dietary requirement is about _water_ intake, coffee, tea, soda, etc all work only because they contain water. While fit-for-consumption 99% ethanol isn’t going to be all that effective, because the vast majority of the liquid is not water at all, but ethanol.
It would be better if he didn't drift into sounding like Macho Man Randy Savage here and there. Great content but maybe dial back the voice a click or two...

My vote is for Chankonabe, a Japanese stew designed for sumo wrestlers. Lots of protein, lots of vegetables for vitamins and minerals, and lots broth to help with water intake. Even with a strict recipe it's got pretty much everything. Plus if it's a survival situation it's perfect for a body building on a deserted island.
A sweet potato, lentil, collard green stew is what you are looking for. Mix in canned tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots and you’ll have every nutrient in one bowl of soup based on the FDA requirements
If I'm given a little bit of flexibility I'm going to choose fried rice and custom pick the ingredients to fit all my needs. Not only would that be possible because of how many options you have for ingredients but as an asian I'll also never get tired of it.
You know that scene in "The Santa Clause" where elf Judy says that it took her 1200 years to perfect the hot chocolate recipe. "Not too hot, extra chocolate, shaken not stirred" so I think this needs to be put to the test, does temperature really matter that much? Shaken better then stirred? What really is the best hot chocolate recipe?
I think "not too hot" is a comfort thing. Some people have less tolerance to higher temperatures. I certainly can't drink most coffees from coffee shops because it's way too hot, and need to wait at least 5 minutes for it to cool down. If it's cooler to start, you can drink and enjoy it sooner
Temperature will play a role in the "shaken, not stirred" area. You're gonna seal up a hot liquid and shake it up? Girl, you're gonna have to be super careful opening that up, or it's gonna explode all over you.
1:50 MattPat: *explaining why potatoes are good as an only food source* Me: *finally understanding what went wrong with the Irish after the potato famine*
The trick is to pick a food you can change but it’s still technically that food. Pizza. You could have deconstructed and it add extra protein. Salad you can do whatever with
Well he definitely won't survive seeing how he won't have enough nutrients even if there are weird kids who gives him vegi cookies He could do calories but he would have to calculate the population of children in countries that has a Santa that likes to eat cookies and milk That isn't a world wide thing
I always say lasagna for two reasons: 1. It's my favorite food 2. It can be vegetable, meat, four cheese, lazy style, vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, etc. And if cooked correctly, it tastes delicious every time.
My parents in their younger days did grow up basically eating only sweet potatoes every single meal. (It was the only food that could be easily mass-produced in their part of the world) The only variation was basically roasted, steamed or mashed sweet potatoes. No meat, very little rice, the only vegetable was sweet potato leaves. They did manage to live through the difficult few years though yes they are quite a fair bit shorter than I am
Food theory suggestion: What are the most optimized toppings and flavors for froyo. Froyo is priced by weight so you could figure out what toppings and flavors can get to 500 calories with the least weight.
I was literally thinking "potatoes is one of the best choices because there is a insane amount of ways to eat a potato" and then matpat said that potatoes is one of the best choices 😂
I love this episode because it disguises learning about biology and how to properly take care of your body in an entertaining way. Good job guys. I wish I had these videos in Biology
The subject of Biology is vast. While we learn what we need to survive as complex organisms, we still didn't learn nearly enough in this 20 min video. But man...those videos from the 1990s to the early 2000s were GARBAGE lmao. So boring. I was more keen on reading in those days. I'm nearly 32, and I have to say, you kids are both lucky and carry the misfortune of having to sort through misinformation among becoming distracted by your screens and devices, but lucky because of the information available at your fingertips. BUT THAT'S JUST SOME USELESS FACTS. A SUM OF USELESS FACTS. THANKS FOR IGNORING THIS. 😉🤫
2:34 a fun(?) Fact about sweet potatoes: My great grandparents in Malaya had to grow and eat them during WWII as there weren't many foods around as you may imagine (food rations, constant bombings etc) but sweet potato plants were very sturdy and one could survive on just them and store them easily.
I worked at Chipotle for 8 months and ate it every single day, even on days off, and I swear I never felt healthier lol! I just had to be careful about what I’d get. Like not getting meat every time or cutting out cheese or sour crème here and there or getting a bowl instead of a burrito. You get creative so that you don’t get sick of the free meal every shift 😅
I love Chipotle! I fast on Good Friday, and I've made it a tradition to get a Chipotle burrito the night before because it seems to last the longest into the next day.
i know this was 2 years ago but still, heres my take on it: you can also consider that it may not be compulsory to eat the full meal. like if you were to have a hamburger, you could have multiple but not eat every single bit and bob of each burger, you pick out the veggies, get the meat for protein and whatnot and the bread for carbohydrates??
edit: apparently there's people who think I'm lying, or I stole it from some video. I don't care if you think I'm lying, I simply read it in the local newspaper. lol I knew a guy from my town who only ate pizza every day, apparently for 2 years straight. when the domino's didn't get their daily call from him, they called the police & they found him with a broken leg, thankfully rescue'd him.
A small correction to the end: All three restaurants have spinach. Chipotle salads and tacos use their Supergreens blend, a mix of romaine, spinach, and kale. And spinach is on Domino's topping list.
Came here for this correction, was a domino's employee for 15 years... And mostly lived of their menu (well one to two meals from there depending on how long my shift was)
I had to play it back a couple times to be sure that I was hearing right when he made that blatantly wrong statement. I wonder why though...Except for his personal soda choices Matpat doesn't ever seem to be overtly biased.
It's amazing how wheat fills most requisites just by itself. It's really an amazing plant. Also: this shows you that most fast food has practically the same basic ingredients.
True, but fast food is just gross! I'm also trying to start my own channel. If you could check out my newest video it'd make me really happy, but no pressure. :) Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a really great day and a fun Christmas.
wow, i'm constantly wondering if i'm getting the right nutrients. This really is going to help me a lot. I just don't have money to spend at the grocery store so I always end up buying rice, potatoes, ramen, mac and cheese, hotdogs, and bread. No condiments of course, cooked and eaten as is, or plain. So this episode really helps me figure out what I should focus on. I'm definitely going to figure out how to get spinach in my cart though because i'm really low on essential vitamins
There is another factor to consider when looking at foods you can eat all the time. Regardless of nutrient density is a phenomenon i've heard called "food sameness" where if you eat the same food too much, your body can start having a visceral reaction to that food. Like if you at that Veggie delight every day, you might start feeling sick when you try to eat it. It is definitely a factor you have to consider. You would need to pick a food that you make prepare in many different ways to change flavors up while also maintaining the same essential nutrients.
It can go the other way around as well, though. You could get "food Stockholm syndrome", and I actually did. I ate the same food for almost a year straight at one point, and even though I kicked that habit I still crave that food almost all the time.
I agree. Good perspective! I'm also trying to start my own channel. If you could check out my newest video it'd make me really happy, but no pressure. :) Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a really great day and a fun Christmas.
While Spinach has a ton of iron, almost all of it is part of other compounds which make it very difficult for our bodies to convert it to a useable form. I think this is the one tiny thing missing from this video is the biochemistry and bioavailability of these compounds, it is not just a matter of relative proportions but if the nutrients is even in a form that is already bioavailable or is more bioavailable after metabolizing it.
That's actually a really good perspective! I'm also trying to start my own channel. If you could check out my newest video it'd make me really happy, but no pressure. :) Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you have a really great day and a fun Christmas.
@Kevnev Katfute I mean he did state that this video was just going to be about ticking a box, because there is no way to know what relative proportions things were in. So I don't think it was forgotten per say, because in a lot more of the breads and tortillas and meats, those nutrients would be available, but the spinach and other raw vegetables should be something where bioavailability would matter more. So I don't know if an addendum or asterisk notation would be optimal. I mean I know videos like this take a lot of time and research, and it really easy for one detail like that to skip through.
@@scarxiett2998 I mean it is easy for that sort of detail to slip through only because of how many times the nutrition community has touted how much iron spinach has, but that is just looking at raw values after processing it down to measure it. And I would assume the scope level of this video would have made it a lot more challenging if the need to account for bioavailability needed to be added. I would have not expected a full breakdown of the biochem involved, but maybe like, "these are nutrients available for use" versus "it contains this nutrient"
Well then, whole milk and potatoes it is. Sweet potatoes are nice, but I prefer regular potatoes, and I think whole milk makes up for what the potato does not have. Add spinach for a backup, get some salt from the sea water I distill, and suddenly I can live on an island indefinitely.
Would a soup in a bread bowl count as a food you could eat every day of your life while still providing the vitamins, minerals, calories, protein, and fiber the human body needs to function properly? Because essentially you could create any soup you wanted to achieve the proper nutrition the body needs while providing some hydration from the liquid of the soup. I don't know the quantity of certain ingredients you would need to actually achieve proper nutrition but hey, at least it's food for thought.
I want to say thanks. I've been a picky eater all my life and this video helped encourage me to add my first plant to my subway sandwich, spinach. Thanks for helping me make my life a little healthier.
Nah there was a experiment before that you have to eat only bread and nothing else but soon the test subject died from malnutrition. So i dont think eating any food can last you long...
I asked my food nutrition teacher this in college and she pulled me aside after class and asked if everything was ok at home. I'm just economical is all 😅 I think she said some kind of quinoa or something though...
Burrito was literally my first thought. All the veggies you can fit, meat, easy format and you can fiddle with spiciness so much that you'll not get bored for the rest of your life
I love how you used the vagueness of the question to subtly answer all possible versions, that being "everything sandwich", "potato", and "I haven't finished the video so I don't know"
I know it's been said but as a Dominos employee, I can say that spinach is indeed a topping. There is a chance it's not available everywhere, even though there is a specialty pizza based around it.
@@kylawiser3561 Eh. It's cheap and nutritionally dense apparently, lol. Crazy to have it featured in this episode considering how much of it I eat for free/ half off to save on groceries... O_O
My only concern with spinach on a pizza would be if it's cooked in the oven or topped afterwards. If you cook the spinach, you run a very high risk of killing tons of the nutrients in the greens because of how hellishly hot those ovens are.
I’ve been watching these for a long time, and I’m just now starting to REALLY appreciate how much work is put into all these videos... love you Matt and Steph! And we can’t forget the Editors! Love you guys too!
I love how a RUclips video explained basic health information that everyone should know better than any health class did in school. The most they really did was show us the food pyramid lmao
I always said salads, similar to matpat's answer in the beginning. You can make any kinda salad. Chicken salad, macaroni salad, fruit salad, normal lettuce salad. It's a good loop hole.
similarly to what matpat said i always said potatoes, because similarly you can make a lot of thing with it, chips, crisps, baked potatoes, roasted etc
I usually said pizza, because a lot of things can qualify as pizza, dessert pizzas, pizzas with any kind of meat, and kind of vegetables, even ones with fruit exist.
Well what exactly does one food mean here? One type of food, or one exact dish? Can I choose any salad, and if I can find a loophole to call something a salad, can I eat that?
Stir fry- rice or noodles as a base, then you get basically limitless meat, seafood, and veggie options. Super customizable, so you could have something that tastes different every single time
As someone who is rlly struggling with food, has an ED and is avoiding fats & carbohydrates at all cost, this felt good to hear. Ty, i’ll keep it in the back on my mind
im suffering with something similar too, and carbs are really good!! if eating a lot of food is scary, having a smaller, carb heavy meal can help you feel full quicker, and get some good nutrients too
there's an easy food that combines most of these: a Dutch dish called "stamppot" (the Belgians call it "stomp") consisting of potatoes mashed with spinach (or kale, if you're into kale for whatever reason.) It should check off most of the nutritional boxes, the main ingredients are potatoes, milk, and spinach (or kale) and it's both tasty (serve with vinegar and a little nutmeg) and easy to make.
Make sure to eat mushrooms too considering that matpat also did a theory on how long can you survive locked in a grocery store and in that video showed how nutritious mushroom is.
Tacos would be a good option. There are so many different recipes all with different flavors so you won't get bored. They can also cover every food group.
I'm so glad to see this. A tornado just ripped through Tennessee about 10 hours ago, and it *just* missed us. It only took some metal sheets off the roof, but other than the power going out, I'm fine. Seeing this when I woke up was a good start to my day, thanks for that.

Glad your okay. We got the heavy rain and wind here in Illinois, but I'm not that far away from Maysville or Edwardsville and they both got hit pretty well.
I worked at subway for two years and my diet was EASILY around 60% subway sandwiches, and almost every sandwich was on that herb and cheese bread. I genuinely think that was the healthiest diet i’ve ever had I felt great.
@Crimson Outdoors Co. Cheese is unhealthy, I don't eat it. Frozen veggies have more micronutrients intact, they're even better than Fresh. If you're getting cold cuts, sure. Their chicken is pretty good. Subway's meat isn't the highest quality but if you're eating it without cheese or mayo & with tons of veggies, it's very healthy, especially as far as fast food goes.
The other question based off this is “if you can force your worst enemy to eat one food for the rest of their life, what do you choose?” And there IS a correct answer to that. The correct answer? Whatever they want. Why? Because then you get to watch as they slowly start to hate their favorite food.
It would still just be worse to have something they never liked in the first place. It’d be horrible to whole way, and even if they did learn to like it, they’d already be tired of it before then.
Well what if they are smart and choose a food that can sustain them for the rest so the answer should not be whatever they want but their personal favorite food
When I saw the title of this video, 3 answers came to mind: hot pot, bugs, and suppliments. Hot pot has many veggies, proteins, and the broth can quench your thirst if water isn't allowed. There is also a boba hot pot that can act as dessert. Bugs are living beings that need the food humans need to survive so they pack a lot of proteins and vitamins. Suppliments are a last resort because I think that they can check off all the needs but don't fill you up and some of them have to be taken hours before or after other suppliments.
I definitely feel like seafood is just water bugs. Lobsters and crabs look similar to land bugs. So yes, land bugs and seafood for me. Both can probably go in hot pot.
I was studying for my biology test and decided to take a break, so I clicked on this video, and this video actually covered the most important information about a paragraph that I spent quite some time summarising!
I was so happy when he said potatoes were a good option 😂 that’s what I always answer to that question because I absolutely love potatoes! There’s so many ways to prepare them and they just hit different tbh
Strictly speaking, in terms of essential chemicals in approximately the right proportions, a regular loaded baked potato (sour cream, bacon, cheese, chives, butter) is the perfect food.
In Final Fantasy XIV, there is a certain food called "archon loaf", which is essentially a bread made in such a way that all nutritional needs are met. Apparently the food doesn't really taste that good to begin with, but it is a viable answer to this question if fictional (yet feasible) foods are allowed.
Sounds like it could be primarily made from a legume and grain blend with flax seeds and vegatables mixed in. It would be incredibly difficult to make a version with a long shelf life, but as a meal substitute that you could buy from the baker in a weekly or daily basis it would probably be a great option.
@@garethbaus5471 it's made from fish and various veggies blended together and mixed in with bread dough before baking. As a result, it tastes like garbage but is extraordinarily nutritious
@@garethbaus5471 it is, in the game it's described as disgusting but the society that created it don't care because they simply don't eat for pleasure. It comes from a society of academics called the Sharlayans and they view food as sustenance and nothing more. So they created the archon loaf with only nutrition in mind and didn't care about what it'd taste like.
I have gotten spinach numerous times as a topping at Domino's, my usual order is actually switching the tomato sauce for alfredo and having premium chicken & spinach as my 2 toppings. I don't think that it is a regional thing, but it is at least available at Domino's in NC
Used to work at dominos. Can confirm that they do offer Spinach. However topping selection can vary based on location. It could be that MatPat's local dominos doesn't offer it due to unpopularity in the area.
@@Green_Kirbyit's like nobody actually watched the video where he announced his retirement. He's not leaving theorist, he's just going to be on camera less.
Based on the restaurant pick up chart, plus with molecular gastronomy there is no way to determine the texture of liquids u could have a solid soup that can be stabed and eaten with a fork
Pretty much everything you technically can eat with your hands is gonna be tastier that way, big spoons are for soups and other liquid stuff, forks are for pasta and meat products without a bone (slips off a spoon easily, greasy), small spoons are favorable for me personally. Traditional cuisine of several countries has its methods, like using sticks to grab sushi/rolls instead of a spoon or fingers.
I work for dominoes and we DEFINITELY have spinach, it's on a number of our specialty items. Whether or not it works the same cooked is a different story lol
After I heard him say no spinach at Domino's, I came straight to the comments hoping another Dominoid had clarified that and if not I would have. Source of this knowledge? I'm an ex franchisee with 20+ years slapping dough lol!
I've actually thought about this before, but if you think about it food doesn't have to be one material only, it can actually be, for example pizza or pasta. You could survive on basically any savory food alone. A pizza contains vitamins, minerals, glucose, carbs, and protein (most of the materials you need to have enough energy. Pasta, lasagna, burgers, sandwiches and most foods do aswell.

Matpat: “What if you could only eat one food?“ Me, who knows that Water is necessary for living and Ice is the solid version of Water and you can eat it: *“Well you see, I’m something of a **-scientist-** food theorist myself“* 😏
My vote is the Taco. I remember being asked this a while back, and going with the Taco because, if made correctly, has something from EVERY food group and in good quantities. On top of that, they are delicious, so it wouldn’t be that degrading. Idk, just my 2 cents.
Soup. My first answer is always soup, ever since I was little. I literally never specified a specific kind of soup. They're all good, both for taste, and for nutritional value. People have been making soup for literally hundreds of years, it's easy to make and depending on the type can fight off a lot of sicknesses like the common cold. They can (emphasis on can) hit every essential nutritional cornerstone. I like soup. :>
Hundreds of years? Uh, try hundreds of thousands to millions. It's probably one of the first ways to cook things we came up with after roasting. We would heat up rocks and put them in bowls made by digging a hole and laying leaves into it. Soup is the least-energy efficient way to cook (in terms of fuel), but one gets the maximum nutritional yield from it. It actually kinda overpowered. But yeah, soup is old. Very old, and it probably helped human tribes grow beyond what simple roasting could provide.
Hello MatPat, I’m a graduate student studying nutrition with my undergrad degree in dietetics. I want to see part 2, with portion/percentages included. so we know which will actually be good. and maybe looking at the bad ingredients, see which ticks all boxes with least downsides.
This theory reminds me of a good of an old arg called the human pet in which the audience had to pick one item to feed a captive in order to try and keep them alive. solid theory 10/10

i always went with pizza, cuz theoretically any topping but if its fixed ingridients, i always heard the bean+rice combo is absolutely amazing for minerals and vitamins add a bread bowl for the bean and rice soup and boom
I bean, brown rice, and vegetable mixture like you can get in a bowl from Chipotle would be pretty close to what you need and as long as you go a little heavy on the vegatables it would probably have adaquate amounts of most of the micronutrients.
Right? Pizza! It's can have all of the food groups. Do you want something meaty, but are tired of beef? BBQ chicken. Feel like some pasta? Try that Mac & cheese pizza they make at Cici's pizza. Want something sweet? Cookie pizza. (That might be stretching the rules, though. . . )
Before watching the video my answer is Pizza. You get most of the main food groups depending on the type of pizza you get. Only issue may be the grease
My second-grade teacher asked my class this question as a starter, I said tomatoes and everyone thought I was crazy. I like to think that I was smarter than all the kids who said chocolate, ice cream, and popcorn just cause they taste good.
@@VShopov Kiddo, you should be learning in school about things like “the relationship between consumers, decomposers, and producers in an ecosystem.” The word can mean many things. In this case, someone’s “relationship with food” simply refers to whether someone will eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re full, and eat all kinds of food without feeling guilty. Remember, your body needs all sorts of things in order to be healthy, and calories are simply how much energy is in a certain food. You need energy to live! Now, kiddo, I think you’re past the amount of internet you should have in a day. Go find something else to do for a while. It’s good for you to not only have a variety of food, but a variety of activities too!
@VShopov relationships are held with many things and just describe your relationship or feelings toward something or how you react. Just like relations or relating
I came up with a Food Theory Idea: I was in Starbucks and this lady ordered a drink with a bunch of different pumps of things, light ice, and mixed a certain way. Just how many Starbucks Coffee combinations are there? This could be a Mario Maker type episode! 🤯
Wouldn't that just be a lot of basic multiplication. The Mario maker episode worked because you had to use fermi estimation as not all combinations worked but with that drink all combinations would work
@@DarthAxolotl was thinking the same thing since you can add anything and if u add 1 thing you can still keep adding and don’t need to stop. So it would be x (the number of options) factorial. So it’s simply just x! And you can easily do that on a calculator
My vote is for cooked potatos. A north korean refugee came to America and when he came, he ate ONLY cooked potato (no potato dishes) for 4-6 monthed. He happily survived and healed fast
As much as i really enjoyed this theory, i feel like it should have finished with Mat thinking up a perfect minimalist and affordable meal you could eat every day that definitely had all the perfect proportions instead of just saying "grab a veg subway with mustard and cover it in spinach" lol. Surely with your talents you could have made a healthier, more effective sub than subway? Perhaps this could be the Babish/MatPat collaboration we all didnt know we wanted...
here's the one that comes to his final conclusion: a Dutch dish called "stamppot", consisting of potatoes mashed with milk and spinach. Bam, there's all your vital nutrients, and it's actually an enjoyable food unlike italian herb cake with mustard and wilted lettuce from Sbubby.
I feel like there isn’t a dish like that. I mean, maybe for some people but everyone has different tastes. Though, the comments have a lot of different dishes which I think could work.
My answer to the question is always soup. I prefer home-cooked meals and it's easy to make, I can put whatever I want in it, It's super versatile so i won't get tired of it, very healthy, and it's just delicious
it can be anything food assuming you can drink anything you want while doing the challenge. you can drink most things your body needs like iron, protein shake, etc
Funny that my first reaction was "AH the potato obviously as you previously mentioned in the martian video" then Matt said it was five years ago and now I wonder how much space in my brain is just game theory
Pies, they are most likely the most versatile food, fruit? Covered. Meat? Covered. vegetables? Covered. And the pie crust counts as carbs, therefore you can live off pie for the rest of your life
I haven't watched the full episode yet I just wanted to comment this idea from just the question, my thought has always been that the ideal would be a soup. You could calculate how much of each nutrient you need mix the right vegetables/proteins/starches boil and season it and it's a soup. And that one would work even if outside water isn't included
So I can survive on the most common dish in Germany. Potato with Spinach and whatever extra you want to add there. You can eat it with Egg, meat. Heck even fruits as a topping. Ingenius!! XD

I wish videos like these existed in 2014-17, videos in which creators explain why carbs are so important. I have pcos and have been gaining weight ever since I can think, so my natural response was = no food, no weight. Boy was I wrong. Months of gym AND not enough protein, man and *I* was wondering why I didn't gain any muscles and was constantly tired/sick.
If I could chose a food, I’d choose chicken rice. Since I’m Malaysian, chicken rice is a bit common here. Chicken rice contains rice, chicken and soup. The soup also has some vegetables in it. So in my eyes, it’s a balanced meal.

7:15 Is no one going to mention the fact that Ed is an actual character apparently?! The dude goes through so much because he's the human example of what happens in movies or video games. He's not a stand in, he's a person
I love this video! I remember how often this question was used as an ice breaker lol. The only qualm I have is that the wheat flour used to make the carbohydrate bases in the proposed meals aren’t technically complex carbohydrates, 100% whole wheat options for breads are usually not served at a lot of fast casual places.
On top of that I’d have liked to see if the amount of the nutrients can even be consumed in a quantity capable of meeting daily requirements Like bro the Italian bread thing has like 2 grams of cheese and he just checked out all the boxes with it lol

so crazy idea...what exactly causes "after-taste?" are there certain food groups that are doomed to have it, or is there a way that we could create foods with good aftertastes?
Taste buds? 😅
Matpat needs to review this. Period.

@@puellanivis it's actually 8 cups of liquid, not water.

Where's MatPat? CHRISTMAS EPISODE!!!
temperature absolutely matters, it's how espresso and cappuccino machines (or your average keurig) work
temperature will matter because the colder it is, the more it will taste like chocolate milk instead of hot chocolate
Temperature will play a role in the "shaken, not stirred" area. You're gonna seal up a hot liquid and shake it up? Girl, you're gonna have to be super careful opening that up, or it's gonna explode all over you.

Chipotle would get my vote too, who in there right mind would want to eat Subway for the rest of there lives?

Tbh i may want to go to chipotle one day
My sister’s friend ate chipotle every day and then got high cholesterol
i know this was 2 years ago but still, heres my take on it: you can also consider that it may not be compulsory to eat the full meal. like if you were to have a hamburger, you could have multiple but not eat every single bit and bob of each burger, you pick out the veggies, get the meat for protein and whatnot and the bread for carbohydrates??
edit: apparently there's people who think I'm lying, or I stole it from some video. I don't care if you think I'm lying, I simply read it in the local newspaper. lol
I knew a guy from my town who only ate pizza every day, apparently for 2 years straight.

A small correction to the end: All three restaurants have spinach. Chipotle salads and tacos use their Supergreens blend, a mix of romaine, spinach, and kale. And spinach is on Domino's topping list.
Came here for this correction, was a domino's employee for 15 years... And mostly lived of their menu (well one to two meals from there depending on how long my shift was)
Literally paused the video to come point that out.

wow, i'm constantly wondering if i'm getting the right nutrients.

Eggs
Potatoes
Broccoli
Chicken
Spinach
Peanuts/Peanut Butter
Sunflower Seeds

There is another factor to consider when looking at foods you can eat all the time. Regardless of nutrient density is a phenomenon i've heard called "food sameness" where if you eat the same food too much, your body can start having a visceral reaction to that food. Like if you at that Veggie delight every day, you might start feeling sick when you try to eat it. It is definitely a factor you have to consider. You would need to pick a food that you make prepare in many different ways to change flavors up while also maintaining the same essential nutrients.
It can go the other way around as well, though. You could get "food Stockholm syndrome", and I actually did. I ate the same food for almost a year straight at one point, and even though I kicked that habit I still crave that food almost all the time.
unfortunately had that happen with instant ramen, i'm still sad about it. if i even try to eat it i want to barf even though i know it tastes good

Being able to prepare a food in different ways goes against the spirit of the question in my opinion.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
@@AdleisioCefnforDolphin True!
Midwest TN here, super glad you're okay. 😌
Subway's pretty healthy if you get plenty of veggies and hearty bread.
If you count out the sugar, I wish they had bread without it
@Crimson Outdoors Co.
@Crimson Outdoors Co. Do you suspect the tuna to be fake, as well?
@Crimson Outdoors Co. source trust me bro
The other question based off this is “if you can force your worst enemy to eat one food for the rest of their life, what do you choose?” And there IS a correct answer to that. The correct answer? Whatever they want. Why? Because then you get to watch as they slowly start to hate their favorite food.
That is pure evil and I love it.
It would still just be worse to have something they never liked in the first place. It’d be horrible to whole way, and even if they did learn to like it, they’d already be tired of it before then.
Well what if they are smart and choose a food that can sustain them for the rest so the answer should not be whatever they want but their personal favorite food
Calm down satan
I mean, when I was in the Marines I ate pizza for 3 meals a day for 2 weeks and didnt even come close to hating it, so joke is on you.

Smart
Good thinking!
Potatos
I definitely feel like seafood is just water bugs. Lobsters and crabs look similar to land bugs. So yes, land bugs and seafood for me. Both can probably go in hot pot.
That's gonna taste bad doe

It would be incredibly difficult to make a version with a long shelf life, but as a meal substitute that you could buy from the baker in a weekly or daily basis it would probably be a great option.
sounds like lembas bread from lotr
@@garethbaus5471 it's made from fish and various veggies blended together and mixed in with bread dough before baking. As a result, it tastes like garbage but is extraordinarily nutritious
@@SurotaOnishi that sounds worse.

MatPat, here's a food theory for you:
What qualifies as finger food versus food you should eat with a fork vs food you should eat with a spoon?
Based on the restaurant pick up chart, plus with molecular gastronomy there is no way to determine the texture of liquids u could have a solid soup that can be stabed and eaten with a fork
and more importantly.. is the ocean soup?
@@yuxuo04 it's an overall cold soup
@@5peciesunkn0wn that is getting fixed soon
Spinich mushroom pizzas from dominoes is my favorite.

You don't really even have to account for water if those are the rules we're going by if you really squint at it and call water a soup..
Soup best
I can't eat soup tho (it made me throw up when I was little and now it makes me extremely nauseous to try to eat it)
Hundreds of years? Uh, try hundreds of thousands to millions. It's probably one of the first ways to cook things we came up with after roasting. We would heat up rocks and put them in bowls made by digging a hole and laying leaves into it. Soup is the least-energy efficient way to cook (in terms of fuel), but one gets the maximum nutritional yield from it. It actually kinda overpowered. But yeah, soup is old. Very old, and it probably helped human tribes grow beyond what simple roasting could provide.
This was my first answer too. There's a reason it's one of the foods found in every culture that ever existed.

This video single-handedly did more for my relationship with food than everything else I’ve done about it combined.
Relationships are with people not with food!!!!
Me too! I'm so glad it's improved! I never really realized at first.
I calculated all possible dominos topping combinations once, fun combinatorics problem
Wait yes i love this
Wouldn't that just be a lot of basic multiplication. The Mario maker episode worked because you had to use fermi estimation as not all combinations worked but with that drink all combinations would work
How many different pumps are there?
@@DarthAxolotl was thinking the same thing
since you can add anything and if u add 1 thing you can still keep adding and don’t need to stop.
@@youmukonpaku3168 I don't like it. I would rather risk gaining weight by eating pizza every day.
Easy, soup. what kind of soup you are asking? Soup with chicken broth, carrots, noodles, AND, some pieces of potato!
Pies, they are most likely the most versatile food, fruit? Covered. Meat? Covered. vegetables? Covered. And the pie crust counts as carbs, therefore you can live off pie for the rest of your life
But what kind of pie?
Ooh, I got it. Pie pie
Pizza Pie is good
Nah subway sandwiches are a better choice and prolly tastes better imo
The only thing stopping you is that pie sucks
I haven't watched the full episode yet I just wanted to comment this idea from just the question, my thought has always been that the ideal would be a soup. You could calculate how much of each nutrient you need mix the right vegetables/proteins/starches boil and season it and it's a soup. And that one would work even if outside water isn't included
SOUP SOUP SOUP SOUP SOUP
Or a sandwich filled with literally anything
So I can survive on the most common dish in Germany. Potato with Spinach and whatever extra you want to add there. You can eat it with Egg, meat. Heck even fruits as a topping.
Ingenius!! XD

I wish videos like these existed in 2014-17, videos in which creators explain why carbs are so important.
