September 2022, a 21 year old woman died after drinking this. They are currently being sued for her death. She had a heart condition and didn't know it had caffeine in it. Literally what Matt was warning about.
I think she "knew" it had "Some" caffeine in it but people with long QT syndrome can have a cup of coffee and be okay... but probably not the maximum safe dose of caffeine. I'm super not looking forward to people turning this into mcdonald's hot coffee lawsuit part 2 though
As a person who actually works at a Panera, most of the cashiers take it upon themselves to warn parents about the caffeine in the chargers for children
@@Cocoaben work in retail and I'd say 70% don't care. Will buy M rated games, do the song and dance, all the bad and sexual content. And they're just "it's fine". Gets pretty aggravating
I work for Panera, and AS SOON as I found out about how much caffeine is in these (around four months ago) I immediately warned pretty much everyone I talked to regularly.

Here after Sarah Katz’s death… Mat was exactly right, and they’re probably going to dodge the lawsuit with the fine print serving size, too. Absolutely terrible. I hope her family gets justice.
I remember hearing about a story of a guy who was accused of driving under the influence of drugs, even though he claimed that he had not. He said it was the noodles at a certain restaurant, though no one believed him. That restaurant was later found guilty of putting drugs in their noodles, making them addictive.
Absolutely they need to advertise this better. I ordered one the other day, not even realizing it was a “charged lemonade”. I thought it was a flavored lemonade. I am 13 weeks pregnant, the recommended daily max of caffeine during pregnancy is 200mg. Thankfully when the cashier asked if I wanted half or full it threw me off, and I saw it was charged and looked it up in time, but I could have easily missed it and consumed an unsafe amount of caffeine.
@mrsnaki I feel sorry for your wife. "Ohhhh the guys in chernobyl took 5000+ ronets and hour don't over react". People like you deserve to be ran out of civilization and left to the wilds because "our ancestors survived housands of year in the woods don't overreact!"
I'm here after the sad and avoidable death of David Brown. Now two people with heart conditions have died because of the drink. This is more than frustrating since both could be with us today, enjoying their lives with their families, if this drink was actually advertised correctly.
It's funny how it's advertised on door dash but not in the restaurant. I ordered a meal with the charged lemonade and on the door dash app it said "this drink has as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee" but when I went into Panera to pick it up there was no advertisements saying the lemonade was that heavily caffeinated. In fact 2 had signs saying sugar free but not a single sign about it being about as caffeinated as a tall Red Bull. I could easily see how people with disabilities and heart conditions could end up drinking this by mistake. Panera definitely needs to lose the wrongful death lawsuits because those deaths were definitely their fault because of lack of advertising.
The charged lemonades at my Panera are actually behind the counter to prevent people from constantly refilling. Not sure why this isn’t the case at other locations
The fact that the comments I’m seeing of Panera employees saying they have to warn people of the caffeine level and it’s just out of moral obligation and not by any official protocol is nuts
Bro, Energy drink's make you wake up a lot more with the vitamins in them rather than the caffeine. That's why they advertise them around the lip rather than the caffeine value in a very small print on the back.
Well Penera is getting sued now over it because they killed someone with this drink. Some of these RUclips comments from their former and current employees will almost undoubtedly end up in a court case as evidence.
As a Panera employee I drank our new lemonades like 2 days in a row and had the worst and most severe panic attacks I've had in my life and just overall increased anxiety. I now know high caffeine makes my anxiety worse I've simply never exposed myself to THIS much caffeine especially since all it takes is ONE charged lemonade for it to be too much for me :) not to mention customers are getting refills of this stuff.
Same, but it made me stay up for so long, the crash had me feeling like I had a fever or something. Most.of us now just mix 1/3 of it with sprite or the lime bubly.
I was friends with the sister of the 16 year old who passed away from caffeine overdose. It was a huge deal for our school, since he passed away in class, and actually scared me away from caffeine to this day. On the bright side of such a sad story, our school created a music room to honor his memory since he was so into music. Hope he rests in peace and that his story serves as a warning to other underaged kids against too much caffeine
Definitely. I once drank 4 cans of Redbull a LONG time ago (It was before test in HS, I think) and I ended up shaking and vomitting from too much caffeine. Caffeine should be more regulated.
Just saw that another person died from this in October 2023. MatPat, thanks so much for making me aware of this issue. You are actually saving lives. I worked as a preschool teacher, and I tell parents all the time now that these drinks are NOT safe for their kids… my coworker said she would have probably let her child drink it if she had not heard from me that it was dangerous. You probably saved several lives, AT LEAST, by making this video. Thank you so so much
The sugar content alone is dangerous..parents really have no idea what they are feeding their kids which is a bigger issue in general. It should be common sense that caffeine isn't good for kids in any quantity and small children don't need any added sugar in their diet either honestly.
@vianjelos yeah i just used the calculator and Google and its double heck even triple of the suger content that a person normally drinks and eats heck even when I was a little kid I didn't eat that much suger and I LOVED chocolate I was like "WTH PEOPLE D!ED WITH THIS DRINK!" I warned my family just in case even though they or me go to panera
I’ll always remember the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade that makes someone overdose on caffeine which could cause kidney failure and might make them come back for more.”
I worked at Panera. I actually quit last year. I use to have to tell customers with kids that those lemonade had caffeine. Kids and homeless came in there often drinking those lemonade. And it was ALWAYS the large cups.
imagine being homeless there is a great deal on a sign "infinite refills" omg i can drink as much as i want! then you die of a seizure shortly after because the lemonde was drugged to the max. the fact that its addictive is so much worse since you dont think that fricking lemons, water and sugar are going to hae obsurdly high levels of cafine. i feel bad the that panera employee in the car rant video because she was so drugged up she couldnt explain what was happening in a believable way
As someone who works at Panera, it is mandatory for us to tell customers that there is an insane of caffeine in the lemonade and we advise parents to not to let their children drink it. Even for myself, I limit how often I drink them and even then, I put half regular lemonade THEN the charged lemonade. Stay safe y’all.
Huge fan of lemonade here (I'm aware that's a weird sentence.) I am on the debate team at my school and we have a tradition of getting panera before or after our debate trips. Earlier this school year, we went and I was quite thirsty. So, being a lemonade fan, I decided that the strawberry lemonade looked so good. So, I drank a cup. Then another. Then another. Then half of another. We went and did our debate and I was feeling on top of the world but almost panicky. On the bus ride back, I felt like I was dying. As a caffeine addict, I'd say one cup throughout the day would be ok for most others in the same situation. However, I would not suggest drinking almost 4.
My sister worked at Panera and I remember her telling me something along the lines of "my coworkers would let the lemonade sit and then drink it and get high off of it"
I once had two large charged lemonades at Panera because I had no idea how much caffeine was in it. That resulted in the worst panic attack I've ever had which lasted for 3 days straight. I guess it all makes sense now.
@@JamesCook76131 Not at all... Caffeine metabolism varies wildly from person to person... To be fair if you have a panic attack that lasts 3 days from 400mg than you are very sensitive to caffeine and probably have problems with coffee too... But there are so many people who are that sensitive to caffeine...
As someone who works at Panera, I always make it apparent to others that they have caffeine. In fact at my store, my manager has made it a requirement for all of us to state that the charged lemonades have caffeine so that kids don't accidentally drink them.
@@MM-pv5tp Like they said in the video (At least I think they did), caffeine is addictive and makes you feel more awake. Basically your brain goes "Panera drink = Good"
I was just a baker there, so I would just get it as my free drink employees get, but it was pretty obvious in the marketing of it that it had caffeine in it. I was pretty happy about it and would drink it often to get me through my shift. But I had NO idea it was THAT much caffeine. Probably started having caffeine withdrawals without knowing it
Bro that’s fucked. The Panera I worked at had a sign on the front of the drink dispensers. I saw it had like 80 something grams of sugar and didn’t ever try it
@@Plant.. I mean it had the amounts listed somewhere but I had no reference for how much caffeine that was😅 But after a while the drink would give me shudders because I guess my body was tired of consuming that much caffeine, but my productivity and motivation was all over the place since my body became reliant on the caffeine and I stopped drinking it often. Damned if I drank it, damned if I didn’t.
Yeah, I don't get how you can take the time to make sure you get the flavor you want, not see all the other text on the sign, and decide to not read it. What else are you doing as you fill up the drink?
I'm sad to say that this drink killed someone. A girl, who had a heart condition, lost her life after drinking this lemonade. She had no idea the lemonade had caffeine and her family is now suing the company.
When I first started working at Panera, I always drank the strawberry mint lemonade, but it seemed a bit too strong for me and it gave me heart burn, so I would water it down. And I didn't just add a little water. I would do half and half, but even then, it was still strong. Whenever I worked late, I'd always wonder how I managed to stay up so long and feel so good. One day, I was getting the lemonade and I just so happened to look at the label where it said how much caffeine it had. It all made sense then, but it took me MONTHS to figure out it had any caffeine at all. Ever since, I've been trying to drink more water.
I had the same experience. I work at Panera as a baker, and I had a normal-sized one on the first day that we had them. It hurt my stomach to the point that I never got one again
Just read: A 21 year old college student passed, and their family just filed a lawsuit against Panera Bread claiming the lemonade, for the exact reasons you listed.
The first time I had a charged lemonade at Panera I was HOOKED. I’m not kidding when I tell you I’ve been craving it ever since. I only had it that one time because I rarely go to Panera, but it’s no joke. The amount of sugar and caffeine in that thing is literally like crack
@@Khunark Isn’t sugar like crack? It’s not something that’ll harm you in smaller quantities but large quantities is when it becomes concerning and flat out dangerous in repeated large amounts.
@@elbron7595 no. That's bunk "science". Sugar can light up the reward centers 6 times more powerful or often or whatever, but an addictive drug alters the chemical composition of the brain/body in such a way that your body's homeostasis is disrupted if you stop taking it.
I’m a nurse in the ER and we have a Panera in my hospital. I drank this straight (and I live off of caffeine and take adderall for adhd) and it mainly made my heart beat too fast. But I can see it affecting others badly. I personally mix it with half bubbly now so I can get SOME caffeine. Plus it’s too sweet anyway so the bubbly helps cut it
I have ADHD and I’ve been on methylphenidate, I’ve been limiting my caffeine consumption as I have gotten older, mostly because I struggle with insomnia and that’s a painful combination of drinking caffeine and having trouble going to sleep at night.
The fact that both MatPat & Panera mention Dark Roast coffee multiple times when it's the roast with the LEAST caffeine really says it all on how little caffeine in understood in the collective conscience. Also, Panera allows sells that lemonade to-go in half gallon bottles. I almost bought one this week, but passed since it was ~$11. Update: Since this comment is gaining a lot a traction I think it's worth highlighting Kyle_P's comment on how this is actually a double misconception. The TL;DR is coffee beans puff up and become quite airy the more they're roasted. An easier visual might be popcorn, but since there's no shell it's gradual. A scoop of dark roast is considerably less dense than a lighter one and in turn less bean material overall, thus the coffee content as a whole, not just the caffeine, is less.
Im a teenager working at my local panera. Before I knew how much caffeine was in the drink, I chugged two cups and was completely mentally dysfunctional for hours after. I only buy them if I know I need to stay up for hours after I drink any of it. I have often warned my peers and any parents who come in, of the insane level of caffeine. It tastes great but please, be weary of how much you have,
You might want to quit your job. THIS IS DEADLY PRODUCT! I haven't had a job since the Thuy Trang car accident, at which time I was working for a company that made fuzzbusters, and even accused a superior TO HIS FACE of having murdered the first actress Power Ranger fans saw wearing yellow
Panera does not need to be held accountable for anything. This is literally advertised as a charged lemonade and energy drink. So if u can't comprehend that you need to learn English. A charged energy drink means caffeinated lol. Period.
We're not gonna suggest cutting back on the non waters? I mean, i agree Panara should've been cautious, and I know some people are just like "I like it. I'm gonna have 4 of them today" and no one is stopping them, but a part of the problem is American's lack of restraint. I don't get people that can even stomach more than 3 soft drinks/ tea /lemonade.
I almost drank one last time I went to Panera. Fortunately I noticed it said charged and I checked what that meant. I have really bad migraines and caffeine can trigger them really bad. Energy drinks are the worst and if this worse than them, I am so glad I caught that before I bought it and drank it.
I get the exact same problem from caffeine. If I were to have gone to Panera Bread without watching this video, I probably would have gotten the lemonade without realizing that it had ANY caffeine, let alone 390MG!
Don't get any Dark Roast Startbucks coffee either. Those have 260mg of caffeine. They don't have any warning either, and people think it's a normal cup of coffee, yet it has 2.5x that amount.
@@Pepe-recha People's bodies differ from each other. My sister likes coffee, but it has no effect on her and she can't drink it without having stomach aches. I'm okay with caffeine, yet one big gulp would be able to make me stay awake in the middle of the night. Some people's bodies just handle things differently.
As someone who works at Panera, the caffeine per serving is when the cup is 3/4 of the way full of ice. I usually warn people about the caffeine around 4pm so they don’t stay up all night.
I like these a lot, but you DEFINITELY need to make sure you don't get multiple. At my Panera the Charged stuff is actually behind the counter, and they do actively try to discourage people from getting more than one, which is important

What about literally everything sold at McDonald's, or any fast food chain? Should they be allowed to operate? If your position is that people aren't smart enough to be ALLOWED to make their own food decisions even when informed, it's either all or nothing with banning food that's bad for you. That's not the kind of position you can go halfway on.
@Gabriel Hill that's like saying companies should be able to sell Crack cocaine "because customers can make their own decisions" that is such a nothing argument and frankly irresponsible
Seems like I’m not the only one that came back to this video, because MatPat predicted the future, and Panera is probably getting away with it. (Edit: two deaths)
I love Panera, as many people do, clearly. But I also was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle) last year and have to be careful about caffeine intake and what my diet consists of. So I don’t eat out too often since then, but I usually avoid any coffee and energy stuff. Thank you for doing this video because my condition is on the fairly serious side and that amount of caffeine could be a massive issue.
So use context clues, and read “charged” in the name. Could help you understand that it’s a energy drink. Then you can read to nutrition facts that are displayed right under the name of the drink.
@@PhishFighters hop off panera's meat bro, it isn't clearly labelled and even if it was that's still an absolutely absurd amount of caffeine for a lemonade to contain

I'm so glad he finally did a video on the panera charged lemonade. I would constantly tell my coworkers when I worked at panera that if they told me that these drinks had cocaine in them that I would straight up believe them. I used to work there for about 8 months and I was wired on these drinks and within weeks of me leaving my brain returned to normal and I felt so much better. These drinks honestly were probably some of the main reasons why I had so much anxiety working there.
If you knew how much caffeine they had in them and knew it was bad for you, WHY WOULD YOU CONTINUE TO DRINK THEM. Seriously. It's not that difficult and people shouldn't need others to hold their hands over consuming a caffeinated beverage. FFS
@@roxazaloah so you research the healthy levels for every item in existence? That's not something that should ever even have to fall into the consumer's requirements, companies should just make sure their product meets basic safety levels.
The anxiety you felt from working at Panera is an inherent part of working there, but it is particularly concerning that a company with posters throughout their stores claiming the have “dedication to menu transparency” and “food you can trust” is intentionally misleading about the caffeine content in their youth-marketed “Unlimited Sip Club” subscription flagship drink line.
Quitting caffeine was one of the best decisions I ever made. It doesn't give you "energy", it makes your brain forget when you're tired. It's a culturally misunderstood drug, no better for you than alcohol, but potentially more dangerous because it lacks the stigma and restrictions. MatPat doesn't explore one of the other reasons that nearly lethal doses of caffeine are legal: the soda companies are in bed with the government.
I used to drink energy drinks a lot, like too much. I'm working on at least cutting down on it, I'm having small amounts of coffee occasionally rather than just straight up sugar and caffeine. I drank it so much that the caffeine didn't affect me anymore and I just drank it for the flavor. Do you have any advice for when I'm craving pretty much just the flavor of them?
Someone once put it perfectly when they told me caffeine steals energy/adrenaline from the future haha, I think it’s so true because later in the day it doesn’t matter how much you drink, your energy is all dried up
Well, for me, I don't know if there's a need to "quit" caffeine. I only drink 3-in-1 coffee from the little bags, and some cola sometimes. And frankly I've never believed in coffee making me more awake or whatever, I just sorta like the tasted of 3-in-1 coffee
@@leritykay8911 if it doesn't make you more alert that's probably because it doesn't affect you anymore because you drink it often, it was like that for me so I stopped drinking it then after like 3-6 months of zero coffee (don't remember exactly how long) I had one again because I was very busy with school and let me tell you just one coffee was enought to get me very noticably hyperactive and alert to the point that other people noticed.
The wild thing is that I usually actively search out 300mg energy drinks & they’re surprisingly hard to find! I needed it due to having hypokalemia and adrenal crash, but knowing I only needed it due to everything not working right, made me realize how dangerous that could be for someone with a functioning metabolic system!
@Alexander Hatt Bang is also 300 mg. I believe they're made by the same company actually. Lots of different available flavors. I believe the Ghost Energy drinks are also pretty high with around 250. If you're someone who likes the flavor of candy then they're pretty good.
aaa i really appreciate this video - caffeine hardly affects me at all (folks with ADD, like myself, are known to be affected differently by caffeine), but that's why it'd be SO EASY for me to overdose on it without noticing if it was snuck into something i wouldn't expect to be caffeinated. this PSA is entirely necessary, thank u guys EDIT: lots of folks in the replies are talking abt how add/adhd can also result in caffeine making u drowsy, and this is also true !! i made my comment mostly to point out the issue i personally have with caffeine, but i could also see how it would be SO DANGEROUS to basically be taking a sedative without knowing. like, imagine DRIVING after that much caffeine if it makes u drowsy. YIKES
Came to say the same. I have ADHD and I always thought the caffeine effects were greatly exaggerated. I just feel normal after large amounts of caffeine, usually able to get some work done.
Here we are 10 months later, and there are now 2 people dead from drinking these. Your video needs to be seen by everyone. It could literally save lives.
My biggest takeaway from this below "stay away from charged lemonades" is honestly, "so THAT'S why I wasn't allowed to drink any caffeinated beverages until I was a teenager". My parents did me right but I wish they had explained a bit more and led by example. 🤷🏻♀️
I know that some lemonade brands are thinking about bringing UK caffeinated versions. Why do sugary and fruits beverages need caffeine anyway. Why do you need to change your heart and brain activity with a drug every time you have a nice beverage. I understand that you get generations are moving away from alcohol but that doesn't mean we have to swap a neuro depressant for a neurostimulant and act like that's totally reasonable. I think we need to have more things like regular lemonade and orangeade and decaf soft drinks. If I want caffeine I'll go have some tea. Many people don't think water, if they're having caffeinated soft drinks most if the day. Maybe a caffeinated pre work out before gym. That will all add up. Caffeine also has a relatively long half life so it stays in your system for a long time. And then imagine in a weekend and you go out and have alcoholic beverages - then you just end up with high levels of a neurostimulant and a neurodeoresswnt competing. This will wreak havoc on cardiac health.

i used to drink an energy drink every day through middle school cause neither my parents nor I knew it was filled with caffiene. Pretty sure I have a hole in my heart now lol
I'm glad you also mentioned Starbucks refreshers because it was the first analog I thought of. In my Cafe, I always warn parents who are obviously buying them for their young child (and I'm talking like, toddlers wanting a pink drink) that this drink is going to have as much caffeine as their own cup of coffee. Some parents don't care, okay, fine, your choice, I warned you. Most of the time, they are SHOCKED because "nobody has ever told us!"
You're doing better than the Starbucks employee at the Barnes & Noble I was shopping handing out samples. I specifically asked if they were caffeinated (I suspect I'm ADHD, but have no diagnosed problem with it, I just try to avoid it). They said no. So, learning that, actually they *do* have caffeine made me pretty upset.
yeah we also did at my store but would always say it's about the same as a can of soda which some parents dont mind giving their kids and some do. but the hot chocolates also have caffeine and so do a bunch of other drinks on the menu that don't necessarily seem like they would. then again at my salon most parents let their kids have drinks with monumental amounts of sugar in them. i never judged though but i would aleays let them know if they were concerned

You breezed over this really quickly, but I think it’s good to keep in mind that these lemonades also come included with the unlimited sips pass, something I nearly bought a while back planning to spend the day at Panera drinking the new lemonades they were advertising. I work at a soda shop and drink at least 44oz of soda a day (most of which has caffeine) but I draw the line at a monster. That’s too much for me. I hurts to drink one so I don’t I have no clue what would have happened if I had actually spent a day at Panera drinking these. This isn’t right, and quite frankly, Panera won’t see me in their stores for a while after this. Thank you for spreading awareness :)
Yup, my mom and I tried the unlimited pass when it was heavily discounted and we always got the lemonades. I genuinely did not realize what "charged" really meant when I was drinking them. Or at least I assumed it was a pretty small amount of caffeine. We did eventually realize that it had a stupid amount of caffeine, so now we only use a little bit of the lemonade for flavor and fill the rest with regular lemonade and the green tea.
I have a heart condition that's severe enough to result in me avoiding caffeine as much as humanly possible, as it can make me /extremely/ ill. Rest in peace my former coffee addict. This sort of thing is horrifying because as someone who can't even have a cup of coffee without feeling the bad effects, I can completely see myself obliviously drinking one of these lemonades without realizing just how much of a grave I'm digging for myself. That tiny sign there isn't enough to tell people like me “hey, you need to avoid this” because it's obscured by the sheer amount of environmental context going “hey, this is okay! :D”. Thank you for making this video.
Just curious what it causes you to feel? I have SVT and had surgery to fix one of the two holes quite a while back, I consume quite a bit of caffeine a day and don't really ever feel super great, I just never really considered it to actually be the caffeine

I ordered the Starbucks refreshers when I’d go to Starbucks with friends, and I had no idea! No wonder I was having problems sleeping! This isn’t just shady, this is dangerous and malicious!
These lemonades are the only things that give me energy and I go for the large sizes! It makes me basically bounce off the walls and makes the work day go faster. I should’ve known they were unhealthy but they’re the only thing that works! 😭
The ‘free refills’ part might be in that grey legality area, considering just two of the smaller size puts you well past the 400mg mark, but I don’t know for sure
I had a medium sized lemonade from there a couple months back. I knew it had caffeine in it, I can handle it pretty well. After I drank it, I immediately started feeling tightness in my chest and anxiety. I knew it was from the caffeine but I never knew just how much was in it. Yikes
I also watched Steve Lehto's video on this, and remembered about this video. I believe the death from the law suit in Steve's video is about the death in Sept 2022. Which currently is the only death I found that happened with the lemonade. It's just that the law suit is finally hit the courts now, which is sparking the news outlets to comment on it. So it didn't just happen.
I’ve outgrown most social media platforms, but I’m so happy that homegirl Sarah educated the people on the sugar and caffeine levels of the Panera charged lemonades. Isn’t trippy how you can heal or poison yourself just based on what you eat/drink?
Literally having the smallest amount of common sense I saw the word “charged lemonade” instantly thought wow this is probably a energy lemonade. Then used the last of my 5 brain cells to read the calories sugars and caffeine that is right in front of your face on the plate.
@@PhishFighters Going from 'Energy Drink' to 'this is literally the same as 4 energy drinks in one serving and btw would you like a refill?' is pretty vast. As you looked at those things, were you aware it counted as multiple espressos? Cause people don't instinctively look at the mg and think 'ah, I know exactly how much my normal coffees contain, I have a good grasp how this'll affect my body'.
this explains so much- i have adhd and it means my reaction to caffeine isnt becoming hyper, its becoming extremely tired. i remember a month or two ago i was feeling great, got a full nights sleep for the first time in awhile, went to panera and got one of these, and immediately passed out when i got home
Yeah, I don't wanna be that guy but I have medically diagnosed adhd, have to take the most powerful meds there were, and I still fill overclocked when drinking caffeine so that tired think, idk what you're on about, not trying to discredit you, just saying we don't all feel the same way and some hyperactive people react to substances differently At least I think so
@@felipecastanha9161 ik! some adhd people like my partner get really hyper from it, some have typical reactions! but it is specific to certain adhd people that caffine makes some tired. there can be other reasons people get hyper from caffine, sometimes thats just how body's react, but adhd is the only know reason people get tired from it! hope this helps! edit cause i forgot to say: i also have an adhd diagnosis, im only unmedicated cause of other health issues that mean i react badly to adhd meds
Caffeine naps with ADHD is the real deal, for me it got worse since the pandemic and possibly catching C-19. So I'm cutting back. Now I can chug an energy drink and pass out shortly after if I sit down anywhere. Going from an energy drink to tea has been difficult
@@felipecastanha9161 this is an interesting complexity you probably could experience for yourself with enough caffeine or stimulants, though I wouldn’t recommend trying. I also have ADHD and I also get hyperactive focus from stimulants. I’m on literally the prescription stimulant to focus day to day. Caffeine is too potent, especially with my meds, and gives me headaches, but it also relaxes me if I have enough at once. In my early teens, it took about one personal size plastic bottle of Mountain Dew to induce drowsiness. My understanding is that you have the pathways that require attention attended to by the stimulant, so you can get things done. But, after those are saturated, the pathways to get things done are the next to be saturated. Eventually I stop being able to do anything, and then my inability to sleep normally catches up with me and I crash. Having everything be nice and quiet in my brain is nice… until I wake up half an hour later with a splitting headache, but that’s a me problem. That’s the best way I can describe how caffeine does that. It’s really all about quieting things down enough that you get bored or sleeplessness catches up with you.
Some people get tired when consuming caffeine. Some of those people have ADHD. However, the idea that ADHD makes people react differently to stimulants is a myth which has been disproved in many many studies
Funny enough, in the Parera’s near me(MD) all have the charged lemonades behind the counter and the cashier gets your drink for you. It used to be near the soda machine but they said too many people were getting refills. Ironically the coffees and blended drink are next to the lemonade.
i work at panera and they did move them behind the counter for maybe 2 weeks, then put them right back next to the soda. i thought keeping them behind the counter was a smart idea
I never thought Matpat's little theory would be proven right about Panera's risky lemonade. Bro literally called out Panera 10 months before the incident 💀
i had a friend in high school who would casually mention being hospitalized for drinking too many energy drinks, *as she was cracking open a new one.* i have no idea what happened to her later on, but now I gotta admit i think it must have ended badly for her...
I mean, it was highschool. Chances are better she lied about that. I don't know when you were in HS, but when I was, the girls thought it was trendy/cool to drink a lot of Monster and that 100% sounds like something my friends' would've lied about for clout.
@@flamboyantwarlock7101 they also thought it was trendy to fake illnesses, back in my freshman year I was talking to a girl who swear she had leukemia because she was anemic and during the cold season her lymph nodes would swell but guess what she didn't she just needed more iron in her diet.(this doesn't only pertain to girls, i knew a few guys who faked breaking their arm or having a disability)

@@KCannaQueen I stress so heavy that it’s triple a latte worth or 2 Red Bulls in a cup but most people still can’t really quantify how much that is so they’re just like “eh they’re kids”
Companies sneaking caffeine into products that shouldn't have it really irritates me. I'm extremely sensitive to caffeine--it doesn't give me an energy boost, but it DOES make me nauseous and shaky. I've pretty much cut caffeine out because it makes me feel so sick and now I'm worried I'm gonna eat some YOGURT and mess myself up
I wouldn't call it sneaking. Most of the advertising and the containers that hold the charged drinks have it labeled on the amount. It's a bit lazy to not be more focused on it but it's not necessarily on the company if they told people who are interested in the product every step of the way that it has caffeine besides putting caffeine in the product name. Soda brands would probably be a bigger culprit of "sneaking" since you have to actively look at the ingredient label to know if anything but it's still there on the bottle or can usually.
@@drazerowx8211 Yeah I feel like accusing a drink they call "Charged" of "sneaking in" caffeine is a bit like accusing a sandwich called "Inferno" of "sneaking in" Capsaicin
Walmart now sells these little plastic bottles of overnight oatmeal you're supposed to put water or milk in the night before and drink for breakfast. 100mg of caffeine, in OATMEAL
Also, common food ingredients contain natural caffeine such as chocolate and guarana meaning it's hard to avoid completely if you like chocolate products.
Last weekend I went to Panera, got one one of these lemonades with my meal, then went to go see a movie. While I was at the movies, I thought I was having a heart attack. The caffeine content of these explains SOOO much!

@levibriggs6420 Panera clearly labeled that it was a caffenated beverage as well as how much caffeine was in it. Not even a small print either, there were signs hanging to warn everyone that it had caffeine. She had a heart condition yet chose to ignore the sign. Unfortunate that she passed away, but it was on her
@@slater.77 not they jus added it after it. Plus the lemonade had 390 milligrams of caffeine almost the recommended amount for a average human. That already is way to dangerous for one drink and it’s lemonade most lemonade has none so she was already thinking it had none.
@Levatator3809 in the lawsuit it states that she knew it had caffeine and just assumed it was a regular amount. Not dangerous for a healthy person, just should be limited. But a quick google search can tell you it is alot of caffeine, someone with a serious heart condition should be doing before consuming caffeine. And yes they did have the signs before. I go to Panera all the time and remember when the Charged Lemonade was first released.
this is actually scary, i didnt know about the caffeine content here and my ADHD meds make it so its not safe for me to regularly consume caffeine while taking said meds. I didnt think twice about what a charged lemonade was, and loved the strawberry mint one. Low key scared what could've happened if i drank them more regularly instead of like a monthly treat
Same I take meds for ADHD and anxiety when I go to Panera I usually get like 2 of the regular change lemonade now that I saw this I probably still will 😂😅 but definitely be careful and only have one a month😅😂
It's super scary. It's incredibly common for many medical conditions and medications to recommend against consuming caffeine. Pregnant women could miscarry, cause a preterm birth, or cause severe medical conditions to the baby.
Just came back to leave this as I’m sure many people have heard of a woman who had a pre existing heart condition and she drank this lemonade from Panera not knowing how much caffeine was in it and she sadly passed away the family is in a lawsuit against Panera for the death of their daughter.
The lemonade at the Panera I go to has always had their caffeine amount in bold clear letters and next to the coffee. The caffeine thing isn't new and has always been there for a while, but I am glad that more people are now being aware of this. It may depend on which Panera you go to maybe, but the one I always go to make it pretty obvious the lemonade has caffeine.
I think they are doing that as an ad "too doozy to do anything? Hate coffee? Wanna get energized while eating at your favorite Panera's? Here our own energy drink!"
Never felt more vindicated. I noticed this back when I first tried them months ago and almost passed out from 2 (caffeine sensitivity), then did the math. Enjoy them if you want, just be careful, maybe only half and half with regular lemonade?
The amount isn’t that bad taking into account the amount of fluid it’s diluted in. A espresso has 25ml in it and has therefore 2.52mg per ml. The beverage from Parnera has 887,206 ml in it and has therefore 0.4394mg per ml. A espresso that size would be with 2205mg of caffeine.
@@exo068 Sure, but it still has more caffeine than an energy drink by mg/ml. The "large" size is 30 ounces and has 390 mg of caffeine, a can of energy drink is 16 ounces and has around 160 - two cans would be 32 ounces at 320 mg of caffeine. Unlike energy drinks, you can get free refills on the lemonades and most people don't realize just how much caffeine 390 mg is, so one can easily end up consuming several cups of this stuff and die from caffeine overdose. And unlike coffee/espresso which is typically served hot and sipped over a longer period of time, the lemonades are served cold and can easily be downed very quickly. Cold coffee offerings at most places are very pricey, which is a deterrent on its own from downing several in one sitting, whereas the lemonades are the same price as the fountain soda and have FREE refills during the same visit. A person sitting at Panera for an 8 hour work shift might have 2-4 cups of coffee during that time with a few cups of water in between, or might opt to save some money and just get the refillable soda. Going for the lemonade instead of the soda in what some might perceive as a slightly "healthier" option (if it were normal lemonade) could turn out to be a deadly decision made more likely to occur because there aren't any warnings about the risk.
I remember when they released theses around February of last year (might be earlier) and I remember being surprised by the caffine amount in it. I even made a joke with my co worker saying "That's probably gonna cause some issues in the future" It tastes great but that caffeine in the lemonade I felt triggered even faster then when I drank a small red bull before
It’s insane that they didn’t disclose the caffeine in a more attention grabbing way considering so many people have health problems and can’t have caffeine. Or what if a pregnant mother stopped in for a few cups of that a day?
As a Panera worker I drink way too much of this drink every shift, and usually I feel fine (I think something is wrong with me) one time I drank a large 30oz cup (no ice) in a 20 minute setting and I had a bad panic attack…whelp
That's the thing about uppers, you're great until you aren't, or blow your heart out. Had a friend whose heart blew out a couple years after he quit, just from a little nicotine. The damage was done.
I clicked this video due to the title, but this actually hits really close to home. I am extremely sensitive to caffeine, so much so that I need to watch how much chocolate I consume in one sitting. The side effects it causes in me are dissociation, mood disturbance, and an anxiety attack that follows 1-3 days post. A cup of green tea can be the trigger and it can ruin my whole week. There are plenty of people like me, and I think I would have been unaware with this level of disclosure...
This is really interesting to me because I'm the exact opposite. I've never felt the effects of caffeine or alcohol no matter how much I drink. I drink coffee for the flavor and will go to bed right after just fine. And I drank 2 of these lemonades in one sitting to see if they worked but still NOTHING.
@@skelepuns8781 I hope you do read this, but I know what you mean because I'm the same way. I shotgunned monsters before bed and slept fine. Here's the kicker. It's not that it doesn't have an effect. It's the fact that you clearly intake so much caffeine that your body has adapted. Which is a very bad sign, you don't have to listen to me, but try to cut back a bit. Real life example from me. I had scuffed my sleep schedule and had to go to a military appointment that was way too early in the morning. So there I was with a whole day I had to follow to the T and no sleep. I had a caffeine intake of about 1600 mg to 2000+ mg. I can't remember because I had high strength pills, energy drinks and more. It was an eye opening experience because I didn't feel anything until I was in the danger zone and I started hallucinating, I was twitching like crazy, my skin was crawling, my heart was pounding in my ears rapidly, as well as many other uncomfortable side effects. Drink Caffeine if you want, but never try to "See if it works". I would not want anyone to go through what I did, it was one of the few times in my life I was scared. I can tell you it does work, you just don't notice it because you're used to it. Stick with healthy doses.

These Panera drinks are insane! I was a senior in college last year, pregnant with my first and I thought these drinks were better than a cup of coffee! We had the 3 month free subscription so I used to order a large for my husband and I to share daily because we worked right across the street from a Panera! Once I got a large one for myself after work because I was exhausted and had a lot of work to do and I ended up spilling it everywhere and barely got to drink any of it. I had a full on pregnancy meltdown lol and went back to get another one later that night... no joke I spilled all of it again as soon as I got home😭 I joked afterwards that maybe I was just not meant to have that much sugar or caffeine because it would have been too much for my baby... after watching this, I seriously believe that spilling those drinks saved me and my baby! I stopped drinking them after the subscription ended and I now have a happy and healthy baby girl thank goodness💕 Panera should definitely have a warning for pregnant/breastfeeding mothers!
Pls don’t consume more than 100mg a day of caffeine if pregnant… dude. Go read some nutrition stuff and maybe educate yourself a bit. Try green tea or exercise.caffeine in that amount could cause developmental damage to the fetus
@Kate Apple Obviously I didn't know that this was an "energy drink" lol! I would never purposely drink something to harm my baby. I honestly thought the caffeine in this drink was from something like green tea meaning it would be LESS than a cup of coffee. Just like the majority of people in the comments I was fooled by how much caffeine was actually in it. Lol I shouldn't have to read a whole nutrition book in the drive thru of a Panera to see if a lemonade would be safe to drink while pregnant
My girlfriend did the same thing and drank these lemonades not knowing just how much caffeine that was. She's a coffee addict, needs coffee every morning otherwise she gets migraines. But even she got heart palpitations and had an anxiety attack! That's insane! I take a fairly high dose of ADHD meds and have to be careful with how much caffeine I consume because of it. For those that don't know, ADHD meds target the same area of the brain as caffeine, which is why unmedicated ADHD people tend to function better while on caffeine. If I drank these without realizing just how much caffeine was in them, I very well could have some SEVERE side effects. Having something that potentially dangerous just.... THERE is kinda scary.
You should really try to get her to quit..caffeine is not good for the body especially when you're addicted to it! Quitting any addiction including caffeine tends to feel much better than being on it. My boyfriend was an alcoholic, drinking ever since he was a teen, I was his inspiration to quit; we can't physically see each other right now so it's been a struggle for him to stay off it (he has trouble coping with stress and stuff, just being with me helps him a ton which is how he quit; before we started dating he was depressed and suicidal, drinking to feel better)

I am really sensitive to caffeine and so I check and double check any beverage I drink. I know that restaurant workers get a little miffed when I ask if they really did give me decaf, but I don't like feeling like I am having a heart attack or stroke. If I even think they gave me the wrong order I have to toss it. It is also extremely difficult to find decaffeinated beverages at most restaurants, which means half the time I can't even drink any thing they serve except water.
Former Starbucks employee: I thought of the Starbucks Refreshers before MatPat mentioned them, they originally weren’t marketed towards kids, but more so the people that don’t like coffee but can feel good about a “healthy” alternative to coffee. As someone who went through caffeine withdrawal (after going cold turkey on all caffeine sources in my life about a year ago, which includes most chocolate products, certian icecreams, soda, certian energy bars or other packaged food products, and most teas), I can tell you that when you become hooked on caffeine as a child, it PHYSICALLY hurts to try and stop consuming it. I had headaches, nausea, brain fog, and occasional fainting spells because of the withdrawal, and every time I accidentally consume a single smidge of caffeine the pain and symptoms come flooding back even worse than before. I just feel that they need to label this stuff for people like me who feel physical pain after consuming even an extremely low dose of caffeine, I mean, if it causes pain to people there should be a warning label for it.
I also went cold turkey around three years ago. The amount of caffeine I was drinking in sodas gave me kidney stones and I was warned that I would have severely reduced kidney function if I continued to live the way I was. Nowadays I drink a lot of things like cranberry juice and lemonade. I can confirm that I also experienced the physical pains of headaches, shakes, aches, and more when I was going cold turkey. It was *hard.* I hate that something like this lemonade (a drink I regularly rely on for a non-caffein option,) is being pumped full of ungodly amounts of caffeine.
glad to see this being talked about more. i work at panera as a barista/cashier. i had one cup of these during one of my shifts and later that night i experienced something that felt similar to a seizure. my entire body was shaking uncontrollably, and i felt trapped in my body. it lasted for about four hours, going on and off, and especially was in my legs to the point i couldn't walk or move besides laying on my bed. i thought it was something as a result of bad anxiety, but the next shift when i drank a small cup of it again, i experienced the same thing. this went on for days. i didn't get medical treatment (i didn't know whether to go to the hospital or not), but i noticed that the lemonades really did something to me. these not having warnings on them about the caffeine amount surely contributed. after drinking these i noticed i've had more recent health issues despite being healthy previously.
I coincidentally saw this video in my recommended about a week ago and was planning to watch it later. I don't even eat or drink food not made by myself (due to my severe health condition), but it's also morbidly interesting to me how unhealthy famous products like this are. But after seeing that death about that college student in the news from yesterday, I'm watching this now with a very different mindset...
That sneaking caffeine into foods to subtly cause addiction thing is one of the few times I think I can be happy about my ADHD; caffeine literally does nothing for me until I have enough to cause discomfort.
I remember seeing a tiktok where someone in the comments mentioned their Panera moved the charged lemonades behind the counter to limit refills, not cause of the drink costs but because people were doing what Sarah was doing and drinking 3+ in a sitting, not knowing how much they were consuming, and that was how I learned they were caffeinated at all. I think selling them is fine but like they either need to be counter restricted to enforce the serving size or there needs to be a more obvious warning placed on the drinks. They're technically not sneaking it in since they list the caffeine amount but like how many people have no clue HOW caffeinated they really are? Three times the amount of caffeine as what you find in a monster energy drink and they only noticeable distinction from the other lemonades Panera sells is that they have Charged in the name...
The problem with that "solution" is now that it's behind the counter, a customer cannot see the caffeine amount. How do I know this? I just literally got an charged lemonade from Panera and it was behind the counter. Majority of American have vision problems the expectation that now you can still see that small font is absurd. For me, I had half a lemonade and decided nope (I got the large).
As a employee working at Panera, I have two things to say: A: I nearly ALWAYS let adults know the amount of caffeine on the charged lemonades, because they don't always know. B: Try Strawberry Lemon Mint (Charged Lemonade) with Sprite, (1/2 and 1/2). It's delicious! EDIT: I also have to add, some parent let their KIDS drink the charged Lemonades. Yikes.
She didn't claim it was illegal, she said it SHOULD be illegal, and I agree with her. Drinks that have dangerous amounts of chemical in them like caffeine should be carefully labelled and marketed.

I'm here after the sad and avoidable death of David Brown. Now two people with heart conditions have died because of the drink. This is more than frustrating since both could be with us today, enjoying their lives with their families, if this drink was actually advertised correctly.
Rest in peace David and Sarah 😢
Was David blind too?
Maybe they should have learned to read. They did it to themselves
It's not coffee@E19259

Bro, Energy drink's make you wake up a lot more with the vitamins in them rather than the caffeine. That's why they advertise them around the lip rather than the caffeine value in a very small print on the back.
Seems like an easy way to get millions in the freaky US system. Drink too much of it and then sue them.

Why should it be the employees job,
Huge fan of lemonade here (I'm aware that's a weird sentence.) I am on the debate team at my school and we have a tradition of getting panera before or after our debate trips.

I specifically asked if they were caffeinated (I suspect I'm ADHD, but have no diagnosed problem with it, I just try to avoid it). They said no. So, learning that, actually they *do* have caffeine made me pretty upset.
Parents not caring about the caffeine levels their children have might need to be investigated...😱
yeah we also did at my store but would always say it's about the same as a can of soda which some parents dont mind giving their kids and some do. but the hot chocolates also have caffeine and so do a bunch of other drinks on the menu that don't necessarily seem like they would. then again at my salon most parents let their kids have drinks with monumental amounts of sugar in them. i never judged though but i would aleays let them know if they were concerned

Terrifying is an UNDERSTATEMENT.

I hurts to drink one so I don’t
I have no clue what would have happened if I had actually spent a day at Panera drinking these.
I agree with you but the video is 18 minutes long I'm not sure I'd call that "breezing over it really quickly"

That sucks. Withdrawal symptoms from caffeine sucks. Most ingrained drug in our society, and also super addictive.

When I was a kid, I was always confused why I could only get certain drinks from the soda fountains while my siblings and parents could get whatever they wanted. I was on meds that you were not supposed to mix with caffeine, or else it could have severe consequences. If I had had that lemonade, I may have died because of the medicine I was taking. So yeah, things that have caffeine should be labeled clearly.
But it is labeled…. You wouldn’t have died because if literally has a label that states it has caffeine
@natalie d I was saying as a kid who couldn't read properly, I would have thought it was just lemonade. That caffeine mixing with the stimulus I was already taking may have been too strong for my tiny body at the time. Making my heart go kaput.

My grandmother was really sensitive to caffeine. She went to the hospital a few times when someone at a restaurant goofed up the decaffeinated coffee. A warning may be a good idea.
The Waffle House Has Found It’s New Host
decaff still has caffeine, just less of it. Still it is indeed common for restaurants to not care if it really is decaff
So was grandma cleaning her house and moving furniture all in one day 😂
@@CountryCarReviews if you read the comment youd know she ended up in hospital think twice before putting a comment on RUclips 😂
Former Starbucks employee:
I thought of the Starbucks Refreshers before MatPat mentioned them, they originally weren’t marketed towards kids, but more so the people that don’t like coffee but can feel good about a “healthy” alternative to coffee. They were at first disclaimed as being made from green coffee bean juice, and I had assumed everyone knew that. But the concentrate was watered down and had significant less caffeine than the Panera super juice.
They became popular with kids because of tik tok and “secret menus”
If that thr cause should have get the strawberry and cream or any non caffeine drink they offer.

I went to Panera a while ago. I had two services of the regular size. I don’t do well with caffeine on a normal day but I thought it only had the same as a soft drink, which don’t tend to affect me. I had an anxiety attack bc of the caffeine and my day was ruined.

@@evaquick8676 Except it shouldn’t even be _necessary_ to research this kind of stuff. The whole point of restaurants is that you’re paying people to get quick grab-and-go food without spending hours looking at the nonexistent warnings and fine print on their lemonade labels.
@@echothefreak9396 while I agree, if it’s not present, then you should research. Is it really that hard to spend a minute for possibly your own safety? Or a kid’s? They ABSOLUTELY need to do more to label these. Deadly or not, a lot of people live with anxiety disorder and other mental illnesses impacted by caffeine. The first time I tried one of these, I had no idea how much caffeine was in it and it gave me a straight up panic attack... and I work at a coffee shop so my tolerance is pretty high!

Reading and reading comprehension are 2 different things. This is why people think things that are labeled "natural", "plant-based" etc to be a sole indicator of a good thing and "processed", "artifical" etc to be a the only thing that matters when deciding if its bad.
If anyone ever took the "personal accountability" argument seriously they will know that its not an excuse to pass on the buck to the next guy, as people seem to miss the part where they have to take ownership of situations that they are involved in(and guess what if your part of the chain of events and played a role, you guessed it you got to own it, maybe you wont need to pay for damages but you gotta take stock of what you could've done differently to prevent or lessen the damage/outcome).

i work at panera and i always let people know with children or older people or if it’s later in the day that those lemonades have a lot of caffeine. it’s about the same amount as a bang energy drink if you look it up. my coworker drinks like three large cups of it a day i told him he’s going to die of heart failure if he keeps on
As someone who went through caffeine withdrawal (after going cold turkey on all caffeine sources in my life about a year ago, which includes most chocolate products, certian icecreams, soda, certian energy bars or other packaged food products, and most teas), I can tell you that when you become hooked on caffeine as a child, it PHYSICALLY hurts to try and stop consuming it.
Chill bruh, it's not that deep I swear
I also went cold turkey around three years ago. The amount of caffeine I was drinking in sodas gave me kidney stones and I was warned that I would have severely reduced kidney function if I continued to live the way I was. Nowadays I drink a lot of things like cranberry juice and lemonade. I can confirm that I also experienced the physical pains of headaches, shakes, aches, and more when I was going cold turkey. It was *hard.* I hate that something like this lemonade (a drink I regularly rely on for a non-caffein option,) is being pumped full of ungodly amounts of caffeine.
@@mischievousgrunk2527 It's as deep as the harm it causes, which is more than it should
@mischievous grunk bro caffeine withdrawal hurts
They did label it. If you are that sensitive to it then you need to take more care to read before you consume.
glad to see this being talked about more. i work at panera as a barista/cashier. i had one cup of these during one of my shifts and later that night i experienced something that felt similar to a seizure. my entire body was shaking uncontrollably, and i felt trapped in my body. it lasted for about four hours, going on and off, and especially was in my legs to the point i couldn't walk or move besides laying on my bed. i thought it was something as a result of bad anxiety, but the next shift when i drank a small cup of it again, i experienced the same thing. this went on for days. i didn't get medical treatment (i didn't know whether to go to the hospital or not), but i noticed that the lemonades really did something to me. these not having warnings on them about the caffeine amount surely contributed. after drinking these i noticed i've had more recent health issues despite being healthy previously.
@Fake Love wtfff
@Fake Love buzz off bot
i don’t know about caffeine doing all that regarding recent health. the time you drank it? sure, but after that, idk unless it’s constant
So, I'm guessing that those caffeine warnings were added afterward?
I coincidentally saw this video in my recommended about a week ago and was planning to watch it later. I don't even eat or drink food not made by myself (due to my severe health condition), but it's also morbidly interesting to me how unhealthy famous products like this are.
But after seeing that death about that college student in the news from yesterday, I'm watching this now with a very different mindset...
That sneaking caffeine into foods to subtly cause addiction thing is one of the few times I think I can be happy about my ADHD; caffeine literally does nothing for me until I have enough to cause discomfort.
For me caffeine does the complete opposite, it just makes me mellow out lol
( also due to adhd )
i have adhd and it does the same thing as my meds but not as extreme. helps me focus and get stuff done
I drank 2 of these and You could come up to me and ask me a question but the answer you'll get is something along the lines of "uff jakg skkwon mu."
For some reason, high amounts of caffeine make me tired. Some people have said it’s because of my adhd but I’m not sure
@@lifeguardpanda They could just put it on a menu sign at the counter.
As a employee working at Panera, I have two things to say:
A: I nearly ALWAYS let adults know the amount of caffeine on the charged lemonades, because they don't always know.
B: Try Strawberry Lemon Mint (Charged Lemonade) with Sprite, (1/2 and 1/2). It's delicious!
