I can't believe Kurzgesagt just dropped this masterpiece, no announcement, no trailer or anything, just dropped this massive project that took almost 5 years for free and for anyone to view, well done Kuzgesagt, please keep doing this, please never stop.
What amazes me the most is that every single atom of our own body has experienced all this and has been now combined into a mass that is able to watch and appreciate this form of art.
@@cloudboy08That is simply not true. The individual constituents of the constituents of your atoms of your body -- subatomic particles were part of the Big Bang. But there were no atoms around during the BB, according to the accepted Big Bang models. Atoms only started to appear a few hundred thousand years after the BB. And no, at best only some of your atoms are from that era either, specifically hydrogen and helium. Truth to be told, a lot of atoms in your body were formed millions (or even billions) of years after the BB, being the products of stars doing fusion and Neutron stars doing the things Neutron stars do. Geez, your comment almost sounds like as if you aren't really interested in science...
just noticed that the beat of the music is exactly 120 bpm, meaning you can hear every 2 beats that every second 1.5 million years pass. that's awesome, and it shows the crazy level of attention to detail this channel is consistent with
And that's on top of how incredibly the different songs for the different eras and their associated instruments and motifs fade into each other, and of course how well they evoke the different eras they're about
With all the (deserved) praise the animation team gets for this, I feel the need to specifically give a shout out to the composers for this one. The music is a seamless journey as well. Kudos!
Watched this in one go with my six year old son. He intently watched the whole thing with lots of questions, and we talked about everything that happened. Such a cool video, will definitely give this several rewatches.
Sadly these days academics are wrong more than they’re right because all of them have let their Left wing politics influence their scholastic work. That’s why they still refuse to acknowledge global warming is a myth despite all available evidence proving so beyond any doubt. It’s because they have a Left wing agenda.
I know that, by this standard, I'm hundreds of billions of years late to the party, but this is truly incredible and one of the greatest RUclips videos of all time. Education meets real art. The soundtrack is a jam, the animation is so smooth, the narration is clean and seamlessly fits in, and the effort to coordinate all of this and create this masterpiece is nothing less than Herculean. MASSIVE respect to the Kurzgesagt team. I've been a major fan for the better part of a decade, but you've solidified yourselves as certified LEGENDS with this one. Dropping this video for free was probably lunacy, but thank you so much for that!
I like the idea, but logistically speaking it might cause a bottleneck because it's so long. One huge, extremely long picture from start to finish might work better, and everyone could view it at their own pace. If it ends up too long to fit in one room it could be threaded throughout all the exhibits, I'd love to see that in any natural history museum.
@@alexrogan6563 I don't think they mean as a main exhibit, just something that plays in the background for people to stop and look at while they browse the main attractions
1-I'd pay him real good to have that in my museum if I had one - for all the work he must've put in this - and 2-I stan the whole exhibit hallway idea, but 45 minutes later I haven't seen the dinosaurs extinction yet, so that would be a hecking long hallway
yo arent you the dude who makes fish tank reviews and food reviews, if you are the guy i just wanna say im a huge fan and you also inspired me to make me buy some fishes and a fish pond❤
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the music? Not only did they make an amazing animation for over an hour, they also composed good music for it. Kurzgesagt are such champions
This is such a masterpiece. I'm so glad I found this video. I'd love to spend more Saturday evenings like this just enjoying music and your nice animations! You do a good job of giving us perspective on how long time it has taken, but even still, it's difficult to grasp.
Respect to not only the animators for animating an entire 1 hour video, but also to everyone else who went into the making of this video. It is a masterpiece.
This is one of the cases where I wish they had a "love" button. I literally shed tears over things like this. It's a loveletter to amateur science geeks and really changes your knowledge and perception of Earth's early history. As far as I know, no one has ever attempted to create something like this, and it's an absolute work of art.
@@Treesinthesummer I would say his vid was primarily comedy with cool knowledge as a bonus, here it's the opposite. And this video looks amazing, of course. Both have their place.
To everyone at Kurszgesagt; The Animators, voice actors, sound engineers, writers, researchers and more i can't think of, thanks for all the content you're pouring out to us for free, it means a lot for many of us to be able to have this kind of content to relax to, learn and enjoy. you're the golden egg of RUclips
Having channels really do something outside of the norm once in a while, not just for the sake of views, is incredibly wonderful to see. Great on you KG
The animations and music are amazing, this is the best earth timeline video ive ever seen. I keep watching it over and over, would love a deep dive video on each period!
I wanna give a shout out specifically to the AUDIO CREW: specifically Thomas Veith and Flabian Glaser!!! I see a bunch of people praising the animation crew, and they totally deserve it, but OMG! The full 1+ hour of music and sound design that flowed so naturally and felt so progressively fitting for each time period…astounding! As a music producer and someone who loves sound design (and studied film in uni), I very much appreciate how much work went into what y’all did AND how important your work was to the editing process that gave us this wonderful work of art! Seriously, the music evolved and was seriously engaging for me as you ultimately shifted tempo, played with genres, played with time signatures, had so many variations on a theme that were constantly fresh, and built climax after climax but still only incrementally building those climaxes over an hour… Well done. Very well done. (Audio crews rare get the recognition they deserve on film/animation projects, yet they are SO fundamental to the art, so I just had to focus on them)
I wonder how much the fact(?) that 50% of brain processing is generally dedicated to the visual cortex plays on people mostly noticing the animation crew vs audio crew
Huge respect for Kurzgesagt for giving us what is essentially an animated documentary for free. Can’t imagine how many hours went into this. You guys are insane 🐐🐐🐐
It's youtube it has ads, just like traditional televsion programs have constant advertisment in between paid to show them. If you don't have ads you paid for premium.
1 hour of high quality animation and music, for free, with barely any mid-roll ads... really shows the passion behind this channel and its goal of bringing knowledge to everyone. Thank you kurzgesagt ❤️
While this is not be discredited as true, you also have to remember that they are partially funded like an education broadcasting network by Germany. Educational broadcasts usually have sparse ads
I'm coming back to this video for the fourth time. I cry every time. I hope that every person that worked on this video knows that they have created art. And not just pretty art but powerful art that influences the viewer to feel and think so much bigger than our average life. It is educational and philosophical while barely using words. Thank you all so much. Thank you.

I just spent one hour of my allotted time on this planet watching this video - an hour that in the vast scale of things (like this video shows) is absolutely nothing. But it was still an hour of my life - and it's easily one of the very best hours I've ever spent online. Totally worth it, in every conceivable way. Excellent work from Kurzgesagt, as always.
Being an animator myself i have immense respect for the animation team.. Ik the pain behind every minute pop in the video... Huge huge props to the team.. Big hug for you to make this for people to be inspired for no cost
I know you intended us to watch this passively in the background while we do other things, but the amazing animation and the drive to find any easter eggs has me glued to the screen
This is a master piece. I already knew a lot about the history of Earth. But this video truly puts it into perspective how short we exist. I cried in the end of the video because it gives a really special feeling. I definitely recommend watching this in one sitting without skipping parts. It really gives one of the best ideas of time out of all videos on RUclips.
For the sake of maintaining accurate linear scaling, for the first 8 minutes, basically nothing happened / changed - and i absolutely love and respect that. It might not work as a general format, but as a once-off special, this is an absolute masterpiece.
I first watched this video a couple of weeks before an island vacation. It really put into perspective the world we all live in, and when I took a swim my mind would sometimes wander to how a good chunk of Earth's primordial days was defined by ever-changing activity in the oceans... To everyone at Kurzgesagt, thank you so much for working so hard on perfecting this audio-visual masterpiece. :')
Let it be known i watched this entire video every second of it without skipping or fast-forwarding from start till the end in my office during my working hours.. i risked my employment for this and I am proud.
Hi!!! I'm a teacher. I showed this video to my students along with a worksheet I made where they had to draw what they saw on the screen. They enjoyed it. The best part was when life became multicellar and time felt as if it moved faster. The students were like "slow it down!!!!" Thank you guys at Kurzgesagt for all you do :)
@@tiagoferro1717 I always tell my students this is what scientists believe and they are free to disagree or research on their own to come to their own conclusions. Also, I did not mention anything about man, just on how life became multicellular rather than just single living cells. Two years ago I found about this amazing channel and I decided to watch every single videos from 10 years ago, today I finished watching every single videos of Kurzgesagt.
Not many creators can pull this off. To make 3 million people watch one hour of mostly silent video in 3 days. Amazing job. I’m already watching it a second time! And yes, the music is otherworldly 👍🏼
I mean, a LOT of people clicked off in the first minute, as these videos always have horrible retention time, but a lot of people definitely stuck around, I'm sure.
This video is so moving and humbling. It really makes me feel so grateful to live on a planet with such a beautiful history. It's amazing to think how there was so much before us, that eventually led up to this point, and we are just a very small part of this entire story.
I would love to see all of human history condensed into a similar span of time. I feel like it would be an interesting contrast to see all of what fit into that last tenth of a second or so.
As a Motion Designer and Animator, the fact that this whole video is continuous 1 hour with seamless transitions, it just makes me wanna bow down to Kurzgesagt. This is probably the longest, continuous, highest quality animation done by an independent RUclips channel.
A one hour Kurzgesagt video is a bigger treat than all the candy I've gathered in 24 years of experiencing Halloween. Always look forward to these uploads!
This is the best educational you tube video I've ever seen. Maybe the best youtube video full stop. im going to share this with as many people as possible
What's more insane, is if you consider many of these facts have been known or mentioned over 1000 years ago. *Big Bang and Evolution starting from the water:* "Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" - Quran 21:30 We built the heaven with might, and We are certainly expanding it. - Quran 51:47 How could a desert man 14 hundred years ago know that? You may say it's a guess work or a flock, but there're more impossible hints in that book. *Origins of iron:* “And We also sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind…” - Quran 57:25 The Quran seems to imply that the iron was something “sent down” and not from this earth, an idea not foreign to 20th century science. *Origins of water:* When the comets enter our atmosphere the heat generated on entry vaporizes this ice into the atmosphere. The Christian Bible says that God created water directly on Earth, however the Quran didn't do this mistake instead it says that God sent down water from outer space "In the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of night and day; in the ships that sail the oceans for the benefit of mankind; *In the water which Allah sent down from the Heavens and brought with it life to Earth after being dead and gave life in it to every kind of land animal;* And in directing the winds; And in the clouds that are enslaved between the Heavens and the Earth; [All these] are Signs for a people who comprehend." - Quran 2:164
@Thesamurai1999 way less than we could have. Even dating back to the Sumerians, we only recently rediscovered things about the universe & space that was already recorded thousands of years ago.
I think it's still insane how an entire MILLION years is passing every second, like we can understand what that means, the passage of time and all, but a million years is just so unimaginably long that it's almost incomprehensible, just imagining seeing nothing but lava and blinding light for your entire lifetime and the lifetimes of millions of ancestors after you, it's just overwhelming!
It's only overwhelming because our brains can't comprehend anything past that. If we knew what happened before and after, or could understand other dimensions, it wouldn't be so overwhelming. Death is faster than light. Just like that, you're born again, living the same life over and over with slight changes we feel in deja vu. Knowing nothing more leaves us in a loop
i have never seen such a good video! The animating, the beat, and the details is astonishing! Love it! I think this message took me 20 million years to make... Thats a while
this is honestly a video i feel EVERYONE should watch in full, no skipping. The fact that lifeforms we can finally SEE didn’t even show up until around 10 minutes from the end is just incredible!! Like so many other comments said, this is such an incredible visual explanation of the whole of our planets history and how new to the planet life actually is. Just an all around awe-inspiring video, we can all read about how old the Earth is, but actually seeing it this way makes it so much easier to grasp the timescale that’s much larger than we can comprehend in our own minds. Fantastic video!!

I thought it was a snoozer, lacking in the diversity of animation they use in shorter pieces. The same background going on and on for each phase of planet earth, was like watching a Hanna-Barbera cartoon with the same background running in loops as Quckdraw McGraw galloped along.
@@brindlekintalessame here, I also hate to be guy but 1hr of animation with the same looped background animations and them saying it took about 4 years to make since 2019 was a bit sus given they have one of the best teams in animations on RUclips
@@brindlekintalesI dare you to find any part of the animation that is looped “liked a Hanna Barbara cartoon”. Bet you can’t because the entire video is hand animated and unique from one second to the next. The point of the video is to show how long the earth was pretty much empty. To put into perspective our tiny slice of existence.
It would be difficult for them to do anything with most of the animations of earths full history at an unchanging pace. Most of it was pretty boring as far as we know, so much of it has to be quite boring (although I don't think any backgrounds actually fully loop, there seems to be some variation). I don't think the visuals are boring cause they were lazy. They should put this up in a science center exhibit to play on repeat all day for everyone to watch.
That's actually a great idea.

Seriously, the music evolved and was seriously engaging for me as you ultimately shifted tempo, played with genres, played with time signatures, had so many variations on a theme that were constantly fresh, and built climax after climax but still only incrementally building those climaxes over an hour…
Well done. Very well done.
(Audio crews rare get the recognition they deserve on film/animation projects, yet they are SO fundamental to the art, so I just had to focus on them)
Not enough love for the soundtrack ❤
This music is indeed out of this world...
I wonder how much the fact(?) that 50% of brain processing is generally dedicated to the visual cortex plays on people mostly noticing the animation crew vs audio crew

It's absolutely insane when you realize that all of human history only makes up the last fraction of a second.
What's more insane, is if you consider many of these facts have been known or mentioned over 1000 years ago.
*Big Bang and Evolution starting from the water:* "Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?"
- Quran 21:30
We built the heaven with might, and We are certainly expanding it.
- Quran 51:47
How could a desert man 14 hundred years ago know that? You may say it's a guess work or a flock, but there're more impossible hints in that book.
*Origins of iron:* “And We also sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind…”
- Quran 57:25
The Quran seems to imply that the iron was something “sent down” and not from this earth, an idea not foreign to 20th century science.
*Origins of water:*
When the comets enter our atmosphere the heat generated on entry vaporizes this ice into the atmosphere. The Christian Bible says that God created water directly on Earth, however the Quran didn't do this mistake instead it says that God sent down water from outer space
"In the creation of the heavens and the earth; in the alternation of night and day; in the ships that sail the oceans for the benefit of mankind; *In the water which Allah sent down from the Heavens and brought with it life to Earth after being dead and gave life in it to every kind of land animal;* And in directing the winds; And in the clouds that are enslaved between the Heavens and the Earth; [All these] are Signs for a people who comprehend."
- Quran 2:164
Mind blowing
If the history of the earth was 1 year, not 1 just hour, human history would only be just over 10 seconds.
And yet, we’ve already advanced so much!
@Thesamurai1999 way less than we could have. Even dating back to the Sumerians, we only recently rediscovered things about the universe & space that was already recorded thousands of years ago.

And it probably took them since 2019 because it's an experimental video and they didn't have much of their full team working on it)@@CylenxswizinSim
I feel like no ones pointing this out, the sfx artists have done an absolutely marvellous job on this soundtrack!
Spofity Lo-Fi Bineural Kurzgesagt soundtrack playlist when?
Lol, nvm, the spotify playlist is on the video description
It’s easily the best part of the video in my opinion.
Woah, whenever there is a long video I usually go off of it within minutes, but somehow you made me stay. I watched the whole thing, and it’s insane how you’ve worked for probably years to make one video and that really paid off. Thanks a lot for making this video, I understand the earths history so much more than I did before watching this
Purely in terms of animation and music, this is Kurzgesagt's magnum opus. You can pick any random timestamp in the video, capture a still, and it would make for a gorgeous wallpaper.
I though this when I first saw their video years ago.
My ancient Samsung won't be able to even take a screen shot. I gotta upgrade soon... but u right as hell
I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this in my feed. This is actually insane! Thank you everyone from Kurzgesagt for this absolute masterpiece
It was like finding a genuine diamond in the middle of a crowded street, waiting for me to pick it up!
Wow, this kind of content is without exaggeration one of the most important things to have ever been made on youtube, and epitomizes the usefulness of the internet. Truly a gift to humanity.
Its honestly so awesome. I love learning this way. Why not just make this channel be sent back to the past and be my teacher for every subject of school. The animation the relaxation in the voice im just sitting hear ready to learn and listen
I mean not really its just entertainment at the end of the day nothing here is new or groundbreaking. The 1 hour animation is absolutely insane though
@@toobigtoobathe9087 any information can be new.
This video is sheer perfection. No other word in the languages I know of can describe this.
The music
Visuals
Narration and explanations.
It's all absolutely peak content.
I know how MASSIVE projects like this must be, but a version of this for the solar system as a whole, or going through the terraforming stuff for other planets that you've done already would be so amazing. I loved every second of this video.
"Every second here is millions of years there."
- Interstalker
I tried to play this video in the background while at work but there's no way I could watch it without appreciating the insane artistry and effort that went into this.
I can't tell you how much important this will be for everyone of all ages to watch for years to come, this might kurzgesagt's best video by far.
It really brings into perspective, how much time has passed since multicellular life has appeared on this planet, let alone complex animal life.
@@42ZaphodB42 And how long it takes for complex animal life to evolve full on cognizance. "Life" in all of its forms may actually not be all that special to the universe (as NASA may or may not conclude from their observations of the Bennu sample). But humankind, or rather any kind of global intellect on the level of our current civilization, may really just be a flash in the cosmic pan...
Thanks Kurzgesagt, for making this 1 hour animated documentary of our Earth’s History for free. I’ve been following your channel since 2015 and always love the consistent improvement in your videos and the animations. Hope this video gets at least 10 million views in no time!
As a fellow creative i've loved watching the quality of the videos steadily improve with me.
It's amazing to see what Allah has created.
you paid for this it doesn't matter subscribe to yt premium or watch ads.
It's awesome video anyway thank you Kurzgesagt!
i second that.
I rarely make comments like this, but this is a borderline, cinematic masterpiece. Your music team, or whoever did the music, absolutely phenomenal. Lots of Retrowave type of stuff, really cool drum sets, but aeration is great, the animation is phenomenal… There’s just so much to say. Let alone the information given
I was dancing while I ate my lunch during the Hadean era
They deserved that support ❤
I calmly watched this whole thing, eyes glued to the screen, feeling very connected to the universe. (While ever so slightly altered lol)
Epic mountain makes their music.
Massive shout-out to Thomas Veith and Fabian Glaser for the incredible music throughout this video. It normally loses focus on normal videos, but in this one it shined. Fantastic job!!!
Indeed! I only wish there was a version without the narrator so I could jam, though I wouldn't want the narration to feel unappreciated.
There is one - search up epic mountain and you should find the whole Kurzgesagt soundtrack.
@@VilleSarmiola There is a link to the soundtrack in the description.
Agreed!
@Kurzgesagt Pin this!
in my opinion, this is literally the best video i have ever watched. i cant stop watching this :D
ive watched ur channel for years, and like its rlly cool, i like the animation style!! keep of the good work Kurzgesagt!
btw i love this part 58:47 bcuz everything looks so pretty.. i miss everything we had back then :[
This is perhaps the dumbest video I've yet seen, unless you are a six-year old and into video games, or wasting time or something.
@ buddy what- i aint 6 first of all, and im ok with ur opinion if u dont rlly like it. ppl have different opinions about certain things and im ok with you saying that, its just ur own opinion!!
@itzrawrcorez Not criticizing you, just the video.
