Related observation: Brain Freezes appear to be train-immunity viable. For my entire life I did in fact get brain freezes- but through a (diet-coke esq) addiction to 7-11 slurpees over the years I can not recall the last time I actually had a brain freeze. This leads me to believe that the body may, assuming the scientific explanation holds true, be able to learn and adapt to the repeated sensations and prevent the reaction.
I think you maybe just made those specific cells numb to brain freezes, or the body got so used to the pain that it doesn’t register it. I had something similar happen to me with dark chocolate-used to give me headaches and now it’s barely anything
The point that most people aren't affected by "brain freeze" cleared up a lot of initial confusion, because my forehead doesn't ache when eating cold things. I always thought people were referring to the cold sensation in the back of the roof of the mouth, which is where I feel it.
It took this video for me to realise that ppl actually feel pain in their head. Like it hurts and forces you to stop, but only on the roof of my mouth. Like it shocks my head and stops my thoughts for a second, but no pain!
8:44 as an Engineer I love the fact he brought up specific heat. I'm also curious if the specific heat of the delivery mechanism (spoon or straw) also plays into effect. "Cold steel" is actually room temperature, but it transfers energy away from that contact point making it feel "cold".

@@MichiruEll i would suggest you not to take way too much cold stuff to get rid of migraines so best if you get some sleep or eat something thats warm.
As soon as I found out that when the roof of your mouth gets really cold it results to brainfreeze, I refrain hitting the roof of my mouth while having cold desserts or beverages. And when I get too excited and intake too much of those, I notice the roof of my mouth get cold, and I either slow down, reajust the position of my straw or both. Never had a brainfreeze for years after that
Same here... Far back roof of mouth. As long as it doesn't touch that tonsil type area, no problem eating ice chips all day long. Mouth can be numb and no brain freeze, as long as that one spot doesn't get direct contact. Also get regular migraines... Far more than brain freeze and I'm a frozen treat fiend 😅
From what I’ve seen from some science shows if you press the tongue to the roof of your mouth during brain freeze if should stop it faster apparently because it’s warming up your mouth not sure if that’s misinformation tho
I'd love to see the science behind competitive eating. Or what's going on in shows like man vs food. It seems impossible to eat so much and not have severe medical damage.
I watched a video about this about a month ago. Most competitive eaters eat constricted and healthy meals. They eat near zero calorie foods such as watermelon regularly to help keep their stomachs large enough for competition. The foods they eat in practice and competition are NOT the majority or even a large part of their normal eating. As for absorbing all the stuff from competitions, well, it's no different from in the wilds, fasting then feasting. Their bodies will take what they can, store what they can and the rest will pass through. Occasional spikes of junk in an otherwise healthy lifestyle shouldn't cause too much of an issue.
Didn't they already do a video on competitive hot dog eating or something like that? Maybe I'm remembering another channel but I thought it was Food Theory
My S.O. is the same way. They get migraines and headaches a lot, but rarely get brain freeze. On the flip side, I could almost say I never get migraines and headaches, but if I take one too many slurps of slushy and my brain feels like it exploded in my skull.
That's how I am and I was confused bc I experience debilitating migraines sometimes but I don't ever get brain freeze even if I cosume it faster than normal just has never happened even as a kid

It's interesting to hear him describe the feeling of a brainfreeze as someone who has never experienced one, I guess I'm just a slow enough eater that it's never been a problem
Something that I've found interesting as a chronic migraineur is that inducing a brain freeze (usually) helps to eliminate or decrease a migraine for me. I know a lot of people use ice packs for migraines but that isn't very effective for me personally. Having the cold inside my mouth is much more effective.
Neat, I want to try this. I wonder if it also has to do with the contents of the frozen treat. Often when I get a migraine due to medication I find sugar helps as well.
@@pidgeonsofthegods1482 it's not a super common one but it is indeed a word! I think most people would just say they have migraines or they get migraines or that they're a migraine sufferer but migraineur is also a correct term
interesting. what helps me most for headaches/ migraines I found is wrapping a cold moist towel around my head and lying down with it. I might try the eat cold trick
As someone who gets migraines often, brain freezes can be significantly worse! My last brain freeze was 7 days ago, and while the main part of the pain felt, lasted about 5 minutes (timed) I experienced "aftershock" where even 4 days later, I would have random spurts of the brain freeze returning for 10 or so seconds. It would not be because of heat or coolness, just my brain being nagging me about that time I drank my smoothie too fast.
actually that is probably not brain freeze. I have migraines too, and I don’t get brain freeze but recently I started getting very short headaches that were sharp and a lot like typical brainfreeze although not triggered by anything. (always in the same area too) my neurologist said people with migraines are at risk for a type of headache called an “ice pick headache” which is probably what you are having based on your symptoms. Brain freeze shouldn’t be recurring, and considering you have migraines it makes more sense for you to have this type of headache. Thankfully, there are medicines for it so if it’s still an issue ask your doctor
@@crypticshadows yea, I've dealt with doctors for over 20 years now and they've never been able to help me, in fact 2 of them insisted I was drug seeking. I'm currently just dealing with it and self medicating when needed.

The name is midrin if you are interested.
Funny how your episodes line up almost perfectly with what I'm learning in school. I just started learning about water and specific temperatures were one of the properties we looked at. I'm not joking this has happened before and I'm not mad about it. I actually think it's really cool and I hope it happens again. You could also do a mini theory on why water is wet but you decide if you wanna do that or not.
I have never goten a brain-freeze, I thought it was just when your throat hurts because it gets too cold so I have always been confused why it's called a brain-freeze but now I know what it really is and that not everyone gets brain-freezes
It's like searing cold pressure either up the side of your jaw & along your forehead or a cramping, heartburn type feeling from your throat to your chest. Whatever your eating has to be pretty cold to start it & the fast you had it (usually) the worse it is.
Matpat I got a theory/question: Can you lessen the severity of a food allergy? I've heard about oral immunotherapies where the recipient eats a certain amount of that food to increase the amount of allergen necessary to trigger a reaction. What I wish to know is does this really work?
To some extent it can. My mother suffers from a rare condition that essentially makes her immune system trigger when she eats (like being allergic to food entering the body) however, things she had previously eaten a lot of, she had mo problem eating after this started. Anything new she wants to eat, she has to eat 1 gram of a day, often for months, and some foods, like Garlic, Onion, or Apples, she likely will never be able to eat again, the reaction is just too strong even at low doses. So yes, but not easily, and not always.
This would be interesting, and I'd love to see a video on this. Especially why it works for some and not others. Both myself and my brother had a severe dairy allergy when we were younger, and we did some kind of immunotherapy. My brother is now no longer allergic to anything, but my allergies got worse.
Unfortunately for dear Matpat, he failed to realize that Cluster Headaches are vastly different from all the rest. Instead of constricting as others do, the vein involved dilates further beyond normal and crushes a very important nerve. This unique process sends a pain signal that feels like a hot poker being inserted into one of your eyes, depending on which side of the nerve is being crushed. This causes the eye to look bloodshot. I know this because one of my older brothers suffers from it. Don't lump Clusters in with the others, because they're a very different beast altogether.
I've read accounts from people saying they've been put down for days at a time because of cluster headaches. I believe there was a guy who found that the only thing to help his cluster headaches was taking Psilocybin or Magic mushrooms.
That makes sense why most of my 'brain freeze' pain feels like it's stabbing the back of my eye. Drinking drinks with ice blended in/slushies way too fast does seem to be the no. 1 way to get brain freeze for me (though tbh it's because i take my time with ice cream so I've never really experienced brain freeze from ice cream/frozen yogurt).
It's interesting to watch this because I've never really had brain freeze, or at least how some do. For a long time I thought brain freeze happened in the throat because anytime I ate anything cold too fast, all that would happen is my throat would start hurting from how cold it was. It's cool to learn that I just don't really get the traditional brain freeze.
Yeah I get the throat freeze too, that's what my family calls it because we all feel it in the throat. What's weird to me though is I get frequent severe migraines and don't have brain freeze so... Guess I'm just weird?
Oddly enough, despite the pain of brainfreeze when I was a kid was something I thought was refreshing (when the pain went away) and fun to get... why, I don't know. So whenever the few times I was alowed a slushie as a kid, I would intentionally get brainfreeze. It was part of the experience, I guess. Haven't had a slushie in a long time.
Me too,.. whenever I go to 7/11, I really prefer to quickly consume my slushies and have that "relief" after the few seconds of "pain" of the Brain freeze... I'm not a masochist though 🤣
Years ago, just from personal experience, i figured that brain freeze happened when ever the roof of my mouth would get too cold from what ever i was eating of drinking and a straw (just like you found out) was like a death ray of cold stuff right to the vulnerable spot. But i also found that if i curled my tongue, in side my mouth, and pressed it against the roof of my mouth, the brain freeze would only last like 15-30 sec
I have an idea for a theory episode! According to science what are the best ingredients to use in an energy bar? Especially considering people with hypoglycemia who need to eat fairly often, what would be best for them?
For me, i look for a combo of simple sugars and protein. Sugar is a quick fix that helps when i sugar low and protein to take over once the sugar wears off. Trail mix is good because of the milk choc and nuts. Candy bars with nuts. Cheese and meat are also good. Or drinking a glass of orange juice. I found that the healther protein bars dont work well for when you are in a sugar low. Not enough quick sugar. But they help keep you from getting there.
when I was young, I got such a bad brain freeze that I literally don't get brain freeze anymore no matter how much ice cream I eat. My throat just gets really cold.
You might've had a minor nerve damage there. But hey, if it doesn't affect anything else like your speech or your senses, I guess you got a good deal out of it!
I don't know if I ever got brain freezes (MatPat talks about this in the video). But I definitely get throat freezes, right behind/above my adam's apple. Drinking/eating anything warm instantly relieves it. I get people literally not believing me when I try and explain this.
After watching this I've realized something, my whole life I thought a "brain freeze" was just the cold feeling on the roof of my mouth, but after watching this I learned that it isn't a figure of speech and it actually hurts people at the head area, finding this out I've also realized I have never not once gotten a head ache, and I LOVE the cold, that also goes for cold food, and now I'm kinda concerned, is there something wrong with me, or am I just better than everyone?? I want answers... Edit: just watched more of the video and herd him say brain freeze only effects one third of the population, my b 😬
I've spent way to long in my life thinking that "brain freeze" was felt in the very back of your throat because I've never had an actual brain freeze before. Honestly it's kind of surprising that I *don't* get brain freeze since my mom, aunt, and grandma all get migraines.
Similar situation here! I thought I experience brain freeze, because when I drink something too quickly I get a horrible, unbearable pain in the back of my throat due to the cold. I just thought the term "brain freeze" was a weird generalization that didn't accurately describe the placement of the pain. I was surprised to realize that people literally meant they felt it in their head and not the back of their throat. My head never hurts from brain freeze, but the pain in my throat is still debilitating and makes me immediately stop doing what I'm doing regardless
@@amberlon Interesting. I could see that being either a direct sensitivity to cold in the back of your throat or possibly a referred pain similar to regular brainfreeze but for you it travels to a different location.
It’s definitely odd that some people (myself included) don’t get brain freezes, the weirdest part for me is that i get frequent migraines but I’ve never had a brain freeze in my entire life
just apply pressure with your tongue to the roof of your mouth when you start getting a brain freeze. the warmth of your tongue should stop it relatively quickly. i’ve been doing this since i was little and it works every time lol
I got hit in the head with a basketball and my head hit the wall behind me. Now I only get light headaches and brain freezes at the cost of two concussions.
This was really interesting. My mum stopped drinking slushies and thickshakes after a couple of scary incidents. She took one sip of a slushie that gave her so much pain she thought she was going to pass out. It messed with her vision and she had to sit down until it passed. And one time she was drinking a thickshake and she did pass out for a moment. I saw her eyes roll back and she almost fell out of her chair before I caught her. She wasn't answering any of my questions and didn't respond at all. It was only a few seconds but she wasn't even aware that's she'd been non responsive. Really scared me!
I've actually never witnessed a brain freeze before. I don't get headaches when drinking too fast, I instead get throat freezes. Where my throat gets so cold it hurts
I've never had a brain freeze, but I do get migraines (they're the worst when I'm on my period). Mentioning that people who get migraines are more likely to get brain freezes is interesting to me!
If I’ve ever had a brain freeze, I was too young to remember. I eat ice, ice cream, slushies, etc with no issue. I have headaches, but no migraines. It’s always interesting to think how different other people have it.
I’ve only ever had about four migraines. I do get brain freeze but it doesn’t last. It hits for about half a minute to a full minute and then I’m completely fine. It’s usually gone by the time I go “aw brain freeze”.
My wife doesn’t get brain freezes only migraines. But she says that if she is having one, eating ice cream always helps a little. Maybe attempt to get a brain freeze while having a migraine and see if that helps.
I get back freeze. Like my back starts to hurt whenever I eat cold stuff too fast. And it also makes sense as to why when people get brain freeze, sometimes people might tell you to put your tongue to the roof of your mouth. And it does work. In the few times I've gotten brain freeze, it's gone away pretty quickly the moment I put my tongue to the roof of my mouth.
Wish I can see an uncut version, from start to finish, of MatPat starting to drink and eat his way to a brain freeze, having it, then finishing off his cold treats. That'll be interesting

I never understood why it was called Brain Freeze, as Ive never experienced them. I only feel chills on the roof of my mouth but never up on my forehead. So ty for explaining this phenomenon!
This actually lines up pretty well! I was always told to press my tongue to the top of my mouth when I get brain freeze and it works! This makes sense because the heat from your tongue will help warm up the top of your mouth faster, reducing the amount of time it lasts
I've never gotten a brain freeze before. I can recall the first time my friend mentioned them, around age 9 or so in 1991 (we were having cherry Slushies). I asked her what she was talking about. At first I thought she was making it up. Pre internet era and all that, so I had to go to the library and look it up in the card catalog. Glad it's not something I have to deal with, I have enough problems.
When I was a kid I remember brain freezes being super uncomfortable but easy to fix and passing quickly. Now I'm 23 and once i feel a hint of one, its too late. Then most of the time I feel like I'm fighting not to puke. It's like getting the flu for 30 seconds and I feel it in my chest too. And I get it way easier than I used to. Sometimes I get it just from a few gulps of ice water
This is so funny since just a few days ago I was thinking about how FroYo and Non Dairy Ice Cream give me brain freezes but not regular Ice cream. Now I know why, I think.
I don't regret subscribing to Food Theory, Mat was smart to create it. It's such a fun and charming channel! There's always some good content. I've been on a Food Theory binge lately, I honestly dunno what the point of this comment is. 😅 I think this is just a compliment.
I agree. I don’t always watch his other channels because I’m not always interested in the games/movies being covered. In contrast, I’ve watched nearly every video on this channel because it’s very much interesting to learn about different aspects of food. Plus, in my opinion, this channel is a lot funnier than the others.
This specific video interests me more than others, because I don't get brain freeze. I've never understood how it works, or how brain freeze even feels. Sure, I've got a freezing throat and mouth sensation, but never ONCE in the head. (Also, great sound effects at the very end.)
MatPat may have just theorized a more comfortable cure for ‘incurable’ hiccups. Chugging a slurpee stimulates the vagus nerve? Sounds way better than some of the other ways to stimulate that nerve…
6:11 had me shook... I do have migranes on an almost regular basis, but... i have never in my life experienced something like a brainfreeze. I haven't done a real stress test exactly but i do eat my ice cream just like everyone else does and people are always wondering why i can't relate.
This makes sense for the remedy that I have heard of and tried: when you get brain freeze if you rub your tongue on the roof of your mouth it makes it go away faster.
straws genuinely almost always give me brain freeze, even when im drinking milkshakes that are significantly harder to get through the straw. but yeah, spoons are at least in my opinion always the best way to go to avoid brain freeze, especially since you can flip the spoon over if youre eating ice cream or something and basically avoid the roof of your mouth entirely
I don't experience brain freezes that often, but when I do I find that putting my tongue to the roof of my mouth and holding it there either completely takes away the symptoms or reduces the time and feeling of them.
I have the same issue. Try using Sensodyne or Pronamel toothpaste. Helps strengthen your enamel and lessens or eliminate this sensitivity! Works great for me!! Hope this helps!!
Hearing MatPat struggle while eating actually is the best ASMR I've heard yet, such passion and commitment yet you can feel the struggle through the sounds lol
Interestingly, Ive been a migraine patient all my life but I don't get Brain Freeze as a headache. I feel the pain directly on my palate, and throat. In fact, Once I feel it start to set in, I either press my tongue to the palate where it hurts to warm it up with that stubby tongue muscle (since it generates so much more heat than the rest of my mouth) or grab some water and take rapid, small, consistent gulps to neutralize the throat pain. Of note though, my migraines do not stem from the normal chemical imbalance triggers; I have a malformed skull combined with malformed spine that already constricts the brain stem so my problem is structural. Probably related.
*Fun fact* : Did you know that you can almost immediately stop brain-freeze by putting the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth? It actually works too, since I've done it before
In this episode I realize that I've never had a brain freeze, I thought that it was just the roof of your mouth getting cold and kinda painful I've never had a headache from that lol
See, this episode was really weird for me because I experience the intense pain and freeze at the roof of my mouth, but its never gone to my head. I've never had a brain freeze. It ALWAYS stays at the roof of my mouth, but the pain is literally more intense than any migraine I've ever had (I've had migraines inconsistently since I was in middle school.)
MatPat is at the same time a biologist, a physicist, a mathematician, a doctor, a fortune teller, a story teller, a great parent, a dare devil and a husband. Great job at getting the knowledge to us through whatever mysterious ways you are getting it XD And thanks for making me look smart when during random topics while talking with friends I can say: "Well actually...". Cheers mate. (And yes I know that the chances of Mat seeing this are cosmically low)
Now I just have more questions. Can you prime your body to resist brain freeze? Could drinking cold or hot water prevent it or slow down the onset? Can certain (edible) chemicals increase resistance? Maybe capsaicin or caffeine? Perhaps a vasoconstrictor could prep your body and avoid shock? Perhaps a vasodilator could increase bloodflow enough to offset the cold induced vasodilation for net zero bloodflow change?
I want to know.. What's the best way to survive cutting onions? Sunglasses? Swim Goggles? A certain way to cut the onion itself? I need help. I need answers... or at least, I need a theory.
I have an answer for you!! Get a paper towel, soak it in cool water, and ball it up loosely. Put it on your cutting board near where you’re cutting the onions. The moisture in the towel will attract the the “fumes” from the onion instead of the fumes being attracted to the moisture on your eyes. Works for me every time. 😉 Don’t toss the towel until you’re all done chopping 👍🏻 Also, cut the onions “root to stem” vs orbitally and that helps, too. Search for “ethan chlebowski onions” on RUclips 👍🏻
Would thermo-dynamics have something to do with this though too? Temperature will pass through water and ice faster, because there are no particulates that act as insulators. Since sugar also aides in absorption of electrolytes, I would predict that it would also aide in that transfer.
Doesn’t sugar draw out water? Is that therefore an electrolyte? Probably off topic but what does any of this have to do with nerves and insulation? Electrolytes relate to osmosis and water balance in cells and living environment.
You're exactly right, i have vasovagal syncope. And was told my faints and falls doctor if i'm overheating be careful with cold drinks can trigger an attack.
If you pass out as suggested depending on how you fall, what you hit / landed on and from how high you fell you could easily die. I suggest sitting down if you've ever had that problem.
What will help is having a room temperature / warm drink by your side and alternate between cold & warm. That way it actually doesn't matter how you consume cold foods- that is what my family does ✌️

I'd love to see the science behind competitive eating. Or what's going on in shows like man vs food. It seems impossible to eat so much and not have severe medical damage.
There was a little bit of talk on this topic on his video about killing yourself from eating
Good suggestion

YES. plus how does it work with diffrent allergies, and intolerances? what about some developed later in life?
It definitely does work
Unfortunately for dear Matpat, he failed to realize that Cluster Headaches are vastly different from all the rest.

Same here, just realized brainfreeze does indeed happen on your head and not in your throat or chest like I thought xD

Hmmm it seems someone might have hypoglycemia.....
That would be interesting tho
I’m the opposite. As a kid I once ate icees so fast and didn’t stop eating until I suddenly started getting brain freezes when before, I did not.

MatPat is at the same time a biologist, a physicist, a mathematician, a doctor, a fortune teller, a story teller, a great parent, a dare devil and a husband. That man knows everything and teaches me something in every video. I am genuanly surprised how one person can know so much, even if it is with help of internet, still, finding all of that on Google is nearly impossible.
😉 Don’t toss the towel until you’re all done chopping 👍🏻
Also, cut the onions “root to stem” vs orbitally and that helps, too. Search for “ethan chlebowski onions” on RUclips 👍🏻
are onions thats bad? I cut them once it wasnt ever like what people say it is
I don't experience brain freeze, I actually tend to eat ice cubes straight out of the freezer as a casual snack
i chew on ice cream and when it comes to cocktails/iced drniks, i tend to eat/chew the ice cubes too
You may be low on iron friend
Your teeth don't hurt?
But that Is not touching the roof or your mouth. So no brain freeze o
You eat WHAT as a casual snack?
Would thermo-dynamics have something to do with this though too? Temperature will pass through water and ice faster, because there are no particulates that act as insulators. Since sugar also aides in absorption of electrolytes, I would predict that it would also aide in that transfer.
What kind of fraud science Mumbo-nonsense are you spouting?
Doesn’t sugar draw out water? Is that therefore an electrolyte? Probably off topic but what does any of this have to do with nerves and insulation? Electrolytes relate to osmosis and water balance in cells and living environment.
You're exactly right, i have vasovagal syncope. And was told my faints and falls doctor if i'm overheating be careful with cold drinks can trigger an attack.
My mother said that she's never gotten brain freeze, instead, she felt an equivalent pain in her neck. It was always so funny and strange to me.
I’ve never gotten a brain freeze either, but my gums hurt instead

@@ХейтерТрендов bruh,shut up bot idc
Same I always felt it in my neck, idk why though
That happens to me, and it ends in the chest. It's crippling, feels like I'm dying. I love it.
He sounded like a windup toy in 0:13
Lol
If brain freeze incapacitates me, I cant imagine how bad it would be for someone with a big brain like MatPat
