I tried it the other day, and my mom described it perfectly: It basically tastes like when you rush over to the soda machine at McDonald's and run your cup through all the soda flavors at once to make one giga drink.
That is actually exactly what it tasted like now that you’re saying it coming from someone who has made that “gigs drink” concoction it does seem somewhat similar

Hey Mat! Big fan here!
Was on a roadtrip and found another coke creation, that claimed to taste like dreams, called “dreamworld”
As soon as I bought this, I immediately thought of this episode. Basically, I’m proposing a video idea of you guys talking about this dream soda in the same way that you talked about starlight! Hey matpat, here in brasil we had a similar coke flavor call "Coca Cola Byte" with a "Byte" flavor. it actually tastes like sweet-electric if i was to describe it.
Fun fact: One time Coke tweeted something along the lines of “Who wants to be our best friend” or something like that. My English teacher replied and thought nothing of it A few weeks later, she got a $50 gift card for Coca Cola. Just a little story I decided to share with the world.
Wow that’s a fun story. I wonder if others responded and got the same gift.

Cool story bro
I’m convinced the flavor was originally “s’mores” (hence the campfire reference in the marketing, cotton candy flavor is the marshmallow, chocolate taste, etc) but they shelved it. Then someone got a brilliant idea to make money on it, hence, “space flavored”.
oh those behind the scenes coke marketing scemes, so funny, so entertaining

I recently encountered this "Starlight" flavoured coke up here in Canada, and I bought a bottle. I rather liked it, and bought a second one the following day. The way I've tried to describe it is if coke decided to make a creme soda.
It kinda tasted like marshmallows to me, and my coworker thought it kinda tasted like lucky charms. I thought it wasn't bad.
Trying to describe the flavor I came to the crème soda idea to.
I didn’t think I’d want any more of it but every so often I do get a craving for it.
Yes! It was rebranded vanilla coke to my taste buds
To me it tasted like an extremely caffeinated cream soda crush
thats...susprisingly acurate
This soda somehow became my favorite. I never tasted anything earthy? I just came up with it being a wild cherry-vanilla soda with a fun touch of mint. I think the coldness is what makes it space tasting
Everyone I've met has said it tastes like something different.
It tastes like someone put candy in it coke, and I also love it! I mean, my favorite flavors are orange vanilla, cherry vanilla and regular vanilla 😍
I also really liked it! I mostly tasted s'mores with a little bit of that coolness at the end.
I thought vanilla cherry too!!!!!
for me it tasted like a rasberry vanilla coke, with an after taste of carmel?
Of the Coke Creations flavors released so far, Starlight is my favorite! I love the stuff, I wish they still made it!
I really liked this stuff and I hope it eventually gets brought back
This video got me to try Coke Starlight, and I actually quite like it. I think it tastes a bit different for different people, though, because I didn't get any of the bitter, earthy, or minty notes, just the subtle cotton candy taste and the cold finish.
Same here !!
I got it as well, and my friend and I just got 2 packs for ourselfs. It's really not that bad
i get like slightly fruity and the vanilla

That'd be great from what iv read they are 1/4 real 3/4 differnt scams hurting literally everyone
@@Birchlandia I doubt they're trying to make you throw out perfectly good food. The real reason they are so much earlier than the actual expiration date is so that they don't get sued for food poisoning or whatever

My first taste of this, it tasted like Christmas. Growing up we had a box of Christmas tree decorations and tinsel and it had a particular pine smell to it that apparently stuck with me into adulthood and I just didn’t know it. When I took my first drink of this it reminded me of Christmas when I was a kid. 😂. Who knew memories could have a flavor.
I tried Coke Starlight when it released, and honestly I'm kind of upset that it's gone. I really loved how much of a berry taste there was, and the zero sugar version was even better since there wasn't all the sugar in the way of the real flavor. I just wish that the flavor would return rather than being left in the past since me and almost every one of my friends absolutely loved the drink.
Coke should come up with a tagline for Coke Starlight: "We wanted to make it taste quarky, but only ended up making it taste quirky."
i hate that i know what this means
Oh my god thats actually a viable tagline
Lol YES
I’d give this a clap and a half but wrong channel

Regardless of the “space” branding I think the flavor tastes pretty good. I have’t tried the normal version but the zero sugar one surprised me with how much I enjoyed it.

You just gave me a massive nostalgia hit. I live in Seattle, and in a town called Greenwood, where I used to live, there used to be a store dedicated to all that weird astronaut stuff. My family is broke, so all I ever got from there was this weird squeezy alien toy that was, like, 75 cents, but I distinctly remember some things that were in the thousands of dollars. My dad loved to go there for camping food, too

coke: "the feeling of being by a campfire stargazing"
Matpat: "THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT IT TASE LIKE ASH AND BUGS"
evrey normal person: it tastes like gram crackers (kinda like what you would be expecting with the feeling of camping and siting around the campfire)
Fun fact: I work at a grocery store who sells starlight, and when looking at the ingredients compared to normal coke, the only difference is the incorporation of fruit juice!
They don't have to list every ingredient so it's very possible the major changes are hidden. But yeah this is obviously a coke base with a weird flavor profile so not too surprising
Sounds like the “OK” cola cola that failed miserably (but has a cult following to this day making their own ok out of other stuff)
I personally love the Starlight flavor & that the flavor profile(s) seem to change with each sip. I will say one thing though....It definitely tastes much better cold than room temp.
Personally I think it tastes like bottle caps, like when you take just a handful of them and lol em in your mouth, but like you said it tastes different every time.
Pop, not lol
It tasted like cotton candy ocean.
It's literally just vanilla cherry
Exactly my take
I came here again because I had the new Intergalactic european version twice already. I was pretty pumped up and I finally found 2 cans in a local shop. It's like having yogurt with biscuits with a slight fruity aftertaste and some mild mint at the end. I really like it and I want this to be here to stay. Way better than the normal one, although it's very strange.
Genuinely I'm a fan of it. The tiny cans are great because it's a nice drink to sip at, not to drink a large amount of. The main flavor is the coke but the aftertaste of cotton candy is very different. It does have a cooling sensation similar to mint but no minty flavor. I like it!
Having tried it myself, knowing people who've tasted it, and having read a few articles, I've seen one general consensus on Coke Starlight: It tastes like you mixed a couple pops at a pop machine. I think the one I've seen that best reflects it is Coke plus Dr Pepper, which does summarize it fairly well. I've also had someone say that it tastes like it has the slightest hint of marshmallow, which I can taste as well. I wouldn't say it tastes bad though, it just tastes odd, without any specifically defined taste. I don't really think it tastes like what space would taste like, I think it tastes like that way space looks.
Tastes like a modified Coke vanilla to me
From descriptions, I can't tell if I would like it or not. I really like Vanilla Pepsi Zero, with Vanilla Coke Zero as a close second... but I'm really not a fan of Dr. Pepper at all. So ... probably worth trying once, I guess, but it sounds like I shouldn't expect much.
I 100% agree with how you described it
I get a buttery caramel with a little bit of raspberry, but a cooling effect? Nope. It's not great but it's not bad either, middle ground level.
Am i the only one who thought the after taste was like skittles
Matpat is the type of person to look at space and ask, "Is anyone gonna drink that?" and not wait for an answer.
To be completely honest I used to not like food theory but I actually love it now. Idk what happened but continue the amazing work u lot are doing

I genuinely love the space soda, when I first tasted it I definitely got the vanilla, but also cherry. I thought it was a mix of all the flavors. It’s so good but also bad
You remember Coke California Raspberry and Georgia Peach? I got hints of raspberry in it
I got kind of a vanilla/raspberry/earthy/cookie profile when I tried it. I'm a fan. My dad, on the other hand, is not. Of course, then again, either it alone or in conjunction with something else he ate gave him bad indigestion, so, that's understandable.
I agree
I thought it tasted like red cream soda mixed with coke. I liked it. If it was still around I would buy it.
I didn't notice any raspberry like others have. I was disappointed. Objectively, I really really liked it.
Yeah, I tried the zero sugar version of this, and then I had to try it a couple more times because I really wasn't sure what to make of it. Each sip tastes different - there was vanilla, and something fruity, never got a sense of anything earthy, and I don't drink alcohol so I wouldn't know it if I tasted that in there; I would actually try to figure out how to articulate the taste in my head while driving down the highway, just parsing out my thoughts as I drove, and could never really put it into words…but it's not bad. I don't LOVE it, but it's…something. Try it once, basically. Interesting conclusion about the molecule that led to the taste, though!

I tried it when it came out and knew about the raspberry / rum "taste" of space. With that in mind, I could possibly taste a hint of rum but definitely no raspberry. Sweet, cotton candy was for sure what I tasted. It has that artificial berry / vanilla taste you would associate with cotton candy, but I wouldn't say it was raspberry. It wasn't bad if you want a sweet drink. If you like vanilla coke you would probably like this.

I still remember seeing a thing that said one of the chemicals found in space was ethyl formate which is what gives raspberries their taste. Therefore space tastes like raspberries. That stuck with me as I thought it was kind of romantic that space tasted like raspberries. I'm still holding to that because my illusion hasn't been shattered by whatever the end of the video says. I just want my romantic notions entered into evidence while I still have them.
Space doesn’t just taste like raspberries tho. There’s so many different chemicals in space that it has a little bit of every flavor in existence

And when it was in a glass we used a bit of light to see a change in color. My taste buds give me a bit of bitterness and slight taste of fruits. I also found the drink to be multi colored. And me and my older sibling wonder what would make it appear to change color? Or are we the only ones who see this and we are overthinking it or we are possibly a bit crazy.
Bots are terrible
Fluid volume and opacity change how light travels through said fluid. So depending on how full your glasses are depends on how much light gets through which can make it look different shades of the same color. Best I can think of to cause different colors.
A fuller glass would look darker etc. The shape of the glass can even have something to do with it.
I think it tasted like fruit, I really enjoyed it but it's like Cherry coke with a special aftertaste.
i thought it tasted like normal coke and than had the after tast of astronought ice cream
I need this kind of video for coke dreamland i never got to try the starlight
Starlight Coke was the first toilet bowl cleaner that could be legitimately purchased using E.B.T. Food stamps.
I feel like for all of these meme flavors coke is just going to do a flavor Rorschach test… just throw a splattering of flavor out there and let pareidolia do it’s magic. Everyone will taste whatever they want and the more people discuss the more they will just agree.
Like if you go in a public park and point at literally NOTHING people will agree that they “also” see that snake or person or whatever. It’s just crowd pareidolia…
Agreed
It’s like the one thing he missed in the video it feels like
Missed opportunity since he talked so much about companies marketing moves and could have brought it up
To be fair candy companies used to do this, like airheads I believe came out with a mystery flavor and if you guessed what the flavor was correctly you’d be entered into a drawing to win some sweepstakes with all the other correct guessers. I remember being a kid around the time this happened and various classmates all talking about what they thought the mystery flavor was all with different guesses.
@@aaronball4700 that’s true
10:15 well there goes my plans for the weekend
I tried it, regular, in a bottle, and to me it was a little vanilla, but had this finish almost like pop rocks to me. It seemed to tingle more, like it was more carbonated or something. Had a red-ish colour as well. It was decent but I wouldn't reach for more. I'd prefer a regular coke or a vanilla version. I've been trying all sorts of pops or sodas. So in the coke I tried Space, Maple, Raspberry, and the Coffee ones. I tried Faygo Pop Rocket one, and a clear Pepsi. Not sure what I'll try this week new. There's a local maker who has a donut flavoured one I'd like to try.
I literally laughed out loud when I saw that picture of Matt Pat's over-exaggerated under eye bags!🤣🤣🤣
Coca Cola starlight is one of my favorite flavors, I can't really explain why I like it so much. Also I love how the name is extremely Fallout sounding. like, Nuka Cola Starlight just sounds so right.
I couldn’t agree any more 😂😂

....are we sure this drink is not an scp?
Man I want a meme flavored coke

I was a contract archivist at Coca-Cola for a bit. They were moving everything over from one of their warehouses to the recently slightly relocated archive at the main building in Atlanta, and I got to catalog a beverage dispenser that went up into space with the STS-77, the 11th mission for the SS Endeavour. It was called the fluids generic bioprocessing aparatus-2, and it was meant to test if carbonated beverages could be produced from space using seperately stored carbon dioxide, water, and flavor syrups, and if it would taste different from space. This particular machine produced Coke, Diet Coke, and orange Powerade.
NASA eventually disallowed carbonated beverages in space because... well, the carbonation plus microgravity was a Problem. The gas bubbles won't escape in space, leaving way more gas to go through your stomach and digestive system than is meant to, and burping is difficult. If you do manage to burp in space... it won't be pleasant. It'd be more akin to acid reflux or vomiting. Since NASA isn't sure what other problems this can cause and they don't really want to test it on their astronauts... no more soda in space.
It would be interesting to explore the psychological (neurological?) aspect of how your brain is always trying to predict the future and make sense of stuff and how it applies to the user experience of this drink. I've had the caramel coffee coke before trying starlight. The memory of what that tastes like combined with the sweet and earthy notes you described, made my brain think someone combined caramel coffee coke with cherry vanilla coke.
Well, this episode seems like a great warm-up for MatPat before he tries figuring out what all those Gatorade Frost flavors are supposed to be. [Fingers crossed]
Me and my cousins tried it once and we started comparing it to a ton of things. We found that if we really thought of literally anything, it would sort of taste like that (including grass, and yes, I ate grass to discover this) so this is sort of interesting.
Also I agree with Tyler I love it.
I remember when this coke flavor came out I saw people didn’t like it and then I tried it and I loved it
Honestly same. I did a review over it on my channel. While I myself though it was okay, I later became a little obsessed with… 😅
My initial reaction: "This sounds like something you COULD do but you SHOULDN'T do."

After watching this I whent out and bought a bottle to try. And it was bizarre. I thought it just tasted vaugly sweet at first, then after a few sips I got the impression I was drinking an RC cola. I wanted so see what would happen if I added some alcohol so I mixed the majority of the bottle with some whiskey... the flavor of the soda completely masked the whiskey, I couldn't tell the difference other then a slight burn from the alcohol. Overall it wasent bad, but for my money I would rather have regular coke.
Apparently you should of tried it with rum!
