    Thanks for your videos. My seedlings are starting to curl up their leaves at the tips. Any idea what is causing this. Many thanks

    green and brown kauri seedlings is genetically determined. Brown ones will go green in heavier shade, but genetically green will remain green sun or shade. When nutrient stressed they will all also lose colour intensity and head towards a yellow or brown/yellow colour.

    Good on you. Very impressed. I use a big tablespoon that I cut down with an angle grinder so it is narrow but long. Does a nice job of lifting seedlings with more delicate roots systems.

      Howdy. It could be a number of things but with more info, I may be able to help. What size are the plants? have they just been pricked out into pots etc? If you send a couple of pics to redearthnp@hotmail.com I'll see what I can suggest. Cheers

    Hi
    Can you recommend a site that would help me identify nz native seeds and seedlings please

      Howdy. I'm not sure I can sorry. I tend to identify the plants and then check sites to see if there are images of fruit, seeds and seedlings.

    Hi! What kind of plant tonic do you use? Thx for your clips!

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  5 лет назад

      Howdy. I use Tui Organic seaweed plant tonic these days. One capful in a 9ltr bucket of water when potting up and I also use a capful in a watering can when planting out.

    what an awesome vid bro. just wondering if there is a reason why you repot 2 or 3 times instead of going straight to PB3?

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  7 лет назад +5

      Thanks. Sorry for the late reply. I prick out into small pots first to ensure the seedlings are growing well and strong before I select the ones to put into PB3's. .Not all seedlings grow at the same rate and some are weak. Also when I am doing 700-800 kauri I have to prepare an area for the once they are in the larger bags. now I am potting some into PB6.5's and this take even more room. Cheers, Max

    Did you water over winter and how often?

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  Год назад

      I rarely need to, relying on rainfall. Once the seedlings are in pots they are pretty hardy but I try to ensure they don't dry out too much or too often so will get the hose out if needed

    Hi I've got a kauri sapling, about 600mm high. Trying to grow it a bit larger in a pot before I plant out . Its got very wilted over this hot summer. I've covered the soil in the pot with some bark/leaves to try stop the soil getting so dry and have been watering it every few days but still looks unhappy. Any advice? Will putting it somewhere shadier help?

    Great series.I live in OZ in Qld ,i have an NZ Kauri & the the seeds dont seem to have much substance,i cant find anything in the shells.Could this be due to our hot summer?

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  4 года назад +1

      Howdy Kerry, sorry its taken a while to get back to you. I'm not sure how old your tree is but assuming it is mature enough to produce cones and seeds, it may well be the hot weather. In NZ the kauri is actually pretty tough, handling poor soils and dry summers but this year in NZ has been ridiculously dry with many native trees struggling.and some ferns and other plants dying. The kauri cones this year are quite small with fewer seed so this may be the cause.

      @@redearthnativeplants165 No worries mate. the tree was planted around 1990 its about 12 metres high & has produced 2 cones.Its very hardy & keeps growing .Good luck with your trees, you are doing a great job replanting. Cheers

    Hi Max. Please can you tell me; can the soil in the seed trays be reused (as it's a mix of seed raising mix and potting mix right?). Thank you again, you are such a legend! Where are you based please?

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  4 года назад +1

      Howdy and thanks for your comments. I never re-use potting and seed raising mix, there's always a risk of weeds or contamination. It is best to use fresh sterile mix for each seeding/ potting up.I do, however use the waste mix in my compost bin or mix into the vege garden. I am based on the Coromandel Peninsula.

      @@redearthnativeplants165 Hi Max, thank you for the quick and informative reply. :) Is this also the case with the plastic bags pots you use in the last stage (before they go in the ground?). I'm trying to cut back on plastics, but understand the need for them to be sterile. Do you ever have visitors to your nursery? I'd love to check out your set up one day :) Happy New Year! Warmly, Gem

    • @redearthnativeplants165
      @redearthnativeplants165  4 года назад +1

      @@readytoshift howdy again. I refuse all the small square pots and trays each year after washing them in a bleach solution and then solarising them in the sun to sterilize them . I too have a major problem with the bags I use before planting out. They are easy enough to wash but difficult to dry. I am still trying to figure out an easy way to reuse so unfortunately they are the only part of my operation that I can say is pretty wasteful. I don't get visitors much here but people are always welcome to come and have a look around. You'd be most welcome. Cheers, Max

      @@redearthnativeplants165 that makes me happy. I recently did a roadie of the north island and far too much of it is farmland. I would give a leg to see all that beatiful bush ecosystem as it was.

      @@gandalfandferg280. Yes it's quite distressing to see all the farmland that was once forest. I am reading a great book right now. 'Uruora, Ecology and History of NZ Landscape' By Geoff Park. A great read but saddens me for what has been lost
