- With Avengers Secret Wars coming to the MCU in 2025. We thought it’d be fun to look back at Spider-Man The Animated Series: Secret Wars. This 3 part arc of the classic 90’s series was inspired by the 1984 Secret Wars comics. These 3 episodes showed us heroes and villains from across the Marvel Animated Universe coming together for the ultimate battle against good and evil!

Spider-Man: Secret Wars is a three part arc of the classic animated series inspired by the original 1984 Secret Wars comic book series. The MCU’s Secret Wars will certainly be taking inspiration from the 84 comics. But even more so the 2015 Secret Wars comics that brought the multiverse into play.
Without diving too deep into the plot of the 84 comics, we’ll save that for another time. Secret Wars was marvel comics first big crossover event. The series was made because the toy company, Mattel, wanted a big event comic to essentially advertise a new line of action figures.
And so Secret Wars was born, a comic that featured a lineup of Marvel’s greatest superheroes and supervillains being transported to a planet known as battle world to engage in an epic battle of good and evil. The perfect story to sell a lot of toys. [clip]
Okay, so, back in the 90’s, before the MCU, we had what’s known as the MAU. The Marvel Animated Universe.
This universe consisted of the iconic X-Men the Animated Series, Iron Man, Fantastic 4, The Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer, The Avengers United They Stand, and of course Spider-man the Animated Series and it’s sequel series, Spider-Man Unlimited.
Anyway, in this three part arc of Spider-Man the Animated Series. We get to see Spider-Man team up with fellow superheroes Iron Man, Captain America, The Fantastic 4, and the X-Men’s Ororo Munroe, AKA Storm.
Now like I said, this arc was inspired by the original 84 comic line. But it was a rather loose adaptation.
First of all there were a lot fewer characters in this iteration of the story. Some notable omissions were characters like Magneto, the Hulk, She-Hulk, Thor, Professor X, Captain Marvel, and more.
Even with three 20 minute episodes, the story does feel very rushed. So the decision to reduce the number of characters was understandable. And we have to remember that this is a Spider-Man centric story.
Chapter One: Arrival. Picks up where the previous episode of Spider-Man left off. Spider-Man is with Madam Web, and she is teasing his next big mission.
We’re then introduced to the cosmic god-like being, the Beyonder.
The Beyonder wants Spider-Man to lead a team of heroes in the ultimate battle of good vs evil.
First The Beyonder gathers a group of super villains from earth including Doctor Octopus, Doctor Doom, Alistair Smythe, the Lizard, and the Red Skull. He then transports these villains to an alien planet far from earth that’s essentially a utopian society. [clip]
The beyonder then accelerates time one year on the planet showing how the villains presence has negatively impacted it. [spider-man sick burn]
Spider-Man is then sent to the planet where he must choose a team of heroes to assist him in taking on the villains.
He selects the Fantastic 4 since they’ve had experience with Doctor Doom, his old friend Iron Man, Captain America since he has experience with the Red Skull.
We then see a few members of the X-Men suggested as Spidey scroll through essentially a superhero database, and he ultimately chooses Storm.
Once all the heroes are gathered you get your classic “let them fight” scene.
And then enters the Lizard.
Once everyone has cooled down The Thing says-
Which is funny because he has no ears.
Spider-Man then explains why they’re all there and what they must do to get home.
Then they fight some more and the Lizard escapes.
They all go after him and when running through the desert they encounter giant laser shooting sand monsters.

Well I would like to do the Hobgoblin saga where it was left a mystery for years until they revealed the Hobgoblin was all along and this just a nitpick here for both the comics version of Secret Wars and this is that I wish they would have add villains like Hobgoblin, Baron Zemo, Leader(Samuel Sterns), Rhino, Xemnu the living Hulk, Red ghost and the super apes and while in the animated series Hobgoblin, Leader(Samuel Sterns), Mr Sinister, Red ghost and the super apes and Electro since he is the Red Skulls son here and it would be a interesting interaction with each other especially with Red Skull and Red Ghost since they are on the opposite side of the wing.

Glad to see you guys are back. Maybe Flashpoint Paradox compared to the comic? Maybe highlighting the strangest comics of popular character? Spider-man Hooky is a strange one no one talks about.
The Marvel Animated Universe was leagues ahead of its time and paved the way for the MCU and the spiderverse
Also Raimis Spider-Man movies took lot of inspiration from 90s series. Like symbiote arriving from space instead of coming from battleworld like in comics. Also symbiote in comics did not originally make Peter aggressive or enhance his powers but this series changed that. Also having Mary Jane as main girlfriend ignoring Gwen completely. And Doc Ock being mentor of Peter. Doctor Connors his teacher and many other things.

@@ibeastyflow3911 not anymore bro. This isn’t the 90s/2000s. The new X-men show tops the tomorrowverse. Even what if is better, and I think what if had a lot of missed opportunities too. Hopefully the DCU’s Creature Commandos will deliver
I later found out the reason storm is the only X-men character that appeared is because all the other voice actors for the X-men series were based out of Canada and they couldn't afford to bring them into California. Iona Morris who voiced storm was the only X-men cast member that lived in Los Angeles at the time.

Spiderman the animated series is so underrated. Everyone talks about the X-Men show but the Spiderman show was the thing I was at awe with.

@@aizenzae4510 that was mostly because the studio didn't want a certain level of violence. They made a rule that Spider-Man couldn't even punch someone so he really had but to use his webs for everything and guns had to be lasers so they could say when someone was shot they were simply stunned. There's maybe three punches in the whole series and one revolver as a gun shown.
It was a pretty dumb rule they set even if they were trying to keep everything family friendly for ratings.
And the show didn't necessarily belittle some of the mental and emotional struggles Peter went through especially with him tryikg to "cure himself" of his powers only to mutate further, have six-arms and then into full blown Man-Spider. I wish a show and especially a movie would have the balls to show Peter deal with his powers turning him into a monster similar to Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. But Peter keeps being made more and more a child for his screen adaptations.

The worst thing about Spider-Man: The Animated Series is that it ends on a cliffhanger :( Such a great show! Impressive how much they managed to do with the show while keeping it rated as a childrens cartoon.
Technically Spiderman: Unlimited was supposed to be the resolution of that cliffhanger
@@MrSpade5150 I know it was supposed to be something along those lines, but I can't really see how it continued the story arcs that were left open. Given, I've not seen most of Spider-Man: Unlimited so maybe I'm somewhat mistaken.
IIRC there was also a comicbook-series that was supposed to continue TAS story..
Madame Web telling Spider-Man that they were going to find Mary Jane is technically a cliffhanger, but I really liked that in the final episode, Spider-Man met Stan Lee.

@FN-1701AgentGodzillaRangerPrime Ω Nope. It's pretty clear it's separate if you watch Fantasic Four and Silver Surfer back to back, as some characters featured in both have different origins.
I guess one could make the very small argument that episode 1 of SM:U plays a bit of the theme song of SM:TAS when Peter changes into Spider-Man for the first time.

I was obsessed with these episodes when I was a kid, first time I saw all these heroes come together. Despite the fast pace, I still enjoy watching these episodes but I will admit I like the spidermen finale more.

I always suspected that The Lizard was a stand in for the Hulk, he would even transform or lose control when angry or stressed out. I think there may have been an issue with the rights to the Hulk at the time.
That's a good point. Never thought about it that way.
They could have used Jack Russel for that purpose too.
I believe it may have had to do with the Incredible Hulk cartoon that was airing on UPN (the now defunct channel that ended up merging with The WB to become The CW) while Spider-Man was on Fox Kids.
There was no issue with any rights. There was only one issue - which actors dubbing the characters can we bring? There's only Storm form the whole X-Men cast, because only the actress playing Storm was available at the time.
@@Jutrzen but they couldn't get the voice actors for most of the Fantastic Four but one, and they still used all of them. They could have had Hulk with a different voice actor. So I'm guessing there may have been other issues with The Hulk. Also Hulk was voiced by Lou Ferrigno in the UPN cartoon so maybe there was contractual or money issue.
They need to bring Christopher Barnes in for one of the voices in Spider-Man multiverse cartoon movies 🔥🔥
Despite the differences, I think the adaptation is not only good but it fits Spider Man arc in the series, specially in the episodes involving his crossover with others heroes. There Spider man was just a rookie, someone being learning about these other heroes and their universes. Now in Secret Wars, he becomes the leader of the group, dealing with the responsabilities that come with the title and proving to the heroes and to himself that he has what it takes to be not only good as these heroes but better.

I thought the secret wars was longer than 3 episodes. I remember reading the comics back in the day, that was a great arc.
There were no arc reactors on any of these shows. That was something made up for the MCU. Iron Man's suit had to be regularly recharged. That was even an over-arching subplot in the second season of his show. Tony whipped up new transforming armor, but overuse of the morphing feature would deplete his power supply. Also, there was nothing about not being able to breathe. After his suit is damaged, Tony tells Spider-Man: "Without my armor, I'm very much an invalid." You did watch these, right?

What needs explaining is why there is still to this day, no legal DVD printing of the full series as a boxset outside of Europe, seemingly just Germany and England.

He was a mindless lizard monster but knew how to keep his clothes clean, he shames many normal humans.
nothing beats Spiderman The Animated Series. Just like the Uncanny X-men tv series, that show became the basis for my knowledge of marvel stories and characters.
I watched this show this year and even though I knew Spider-Man never throw a punch it didn’t effect my enjoyment of the show.
Actually, Spider-Man did throw some punches on this shows. He threw punches at Scorpion, Chameleon, two guards, Morbius, Smythe, Green Goblin, Black Cat, lizard henchmen and an alternative version of Man-Spider. Also, as a Man-Spider, he punched Punisher and Kraven.

This was awesome I had not seen the secret wars in quite a while this was on point.
I liked the 1994 Spider-man animated series but I loved the Secret Wars event a lot, it's a love letter 💌 for all fans of Jim Shooter's 1984 comic .

What in the name of early 2010s?!?
I know a lot of people (especially as time passed) have put down Secret Wars (the original comic series), but I loved it; it was epic. The closest we'd had up until then that was such a major team-up was Contest of Champions but that was just brief interactions even though so many more. Otherwise it was just the annual JLA/JSA team-ups, or the even rarer marvel teams crossing paths for an entire issue. (Defenders/Avengers came closest for Marvel. And Crisis being the awesome but depressing outlier naturally). Seeing so many top tier villains and heroes interact (action and socializing) for such a stretch of time was mind-blowing. The cartoon's version wasn't as epic for me, but was still a great arc. And the changes actually let the events be actually tense and a surprise since not being sure how it'd play out. And icing on the cake that made it seem all the more real was thegreat move of using existing characters and their voice actors from other series. A much better work than if it tried to get boiled down to a single TV movie/video with new art styles or actors.

I know they chose her because she was the only X-Men voice actor available at the time, but I'm so glad that Spider-Man chose Storm out of all of them because she was in fact the only one powerful enough to potentially take on The Beyonder.

@@cbb8584 with how far they missed the mark with Phase 4, I don't think they can pull it off. They don't have the balance of leadership they once had. Most of the people that paid attention to the little details, and made sure everything makes sense together, either left or were pushed out. Now all you got is a bunch of people with different agendas.

Secret war - 12 issue limited series was popular comic book series in 1984. Love the crossover to other marvel titles. It inspired a 1985 sequel limited series.

According to John Semper...he wanted to write Hulk into it, but he couldn't since The Incredible Hulk was airing on UPN. Which is like the trouble Fox and Disney had getting Spidey into the MCU from Sony. And that made it ironic, since SMTAS was on Fox Kids.
Those last two episodes of Spider-Man TAS were like the first attempt to make a Spider-Verse story.

Spider-Man TAS was such an amazing show but too bad it ended with a cliffhanger.
The Secret Wars episodes were awesome but it made sense why they didn’t had The Hulk in it and replaced it with the Lizard . It was because The Incredible Hulk was made from another animation studio and tv network and distribution rights and they couldn’t add him in The Secret Wars episodes .

I wish they had made the Six Forgotten Warriors arc one episode shorter and used that episode to add a forth to Secret Wars. The voice actor for Thing from the FF cartoon would have been better too. Shame Hulk wasn't able to be featured as well.

Good old memories... I am sorry to say.. But lizard got his ass kicked twice in same episode.. Hahaha
I feel so bad for Black Cat in Secret Wars "Gauntlet of the Red Skull". She had the chance to honor her father by defeating Red Skull and to get back at Doc Ock for all that he has done to her family, but instead, she ended up as a hostage. While it's great that they gave her the super soldier serum, I hated the way this show often made Black Cat a damsel in distress.

Lizard and Cap were next to worthless in these episodes. Lizard kept getting knocked out and Cap kept hitting on Black Cat 🤣
To make it to the rank of captain one must have priorities, and Cap had priorities.
I wonder if the upcoming Madame Web movie (series? I can't remember) will play n2 Avengers Secret Wars. Also Titania, the villain in She Hulk, made her 1st comic appearance in Secret Wars #3. Except in it she was created by Dr. Doom, along with Volcana after being transported 2 Battleworld from Earth

It was an okay attempt to make this like the comic, except I would have preferred Hulk over Storm. I mean the iconic mountain falling on the heroes is Hulks biggest moment. It's been several years since I watched the series. Thanks for doing this.

The Secret Wars movies need to be done by the ones who made this spider man series and get Kevin Fiege to back off and have all the superheroes to be in the movie to they couldn't get in the spider man cartoon series
The DC animated shows from the 90s aged so much better than the Marvel ones. Both from a writing standpoint and animation.
Marvel resume production of this series just like you did with the X-Men.
