  • With the Marvel Cinematic Universe reaching its climatic conclusion to 10 years of serialised storytelling, Josh from Panels to Pixels takes a look at the Marvel Animated Series of the 90s; its history and how its legacy can still be felt in pop culture today.
From 1992 - 2000, eight shows across 253 episodes made up the Marvel Animated Universe, introducing a whole generation to the characters that would go on to dominate box offices worldwide.
They were: X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man Unlimited and Avengers United They Stand.
So dust off your video tapes, grab a bowl of breakfast cereal and get stuck in to this video essay/documentary/love letter to the cartoons of our childhood.

Its makes me sad that OUR Spidey is still in a space/time warp journey, with madam webb, searching for mary jane....
      Tis a scary alternate reality..
On one hand gwen stacy doesnt die (possibly by peters hands) and instead Mary Jane gets chucked through a interdimensional black hole thanks in part to a fool scientist who took to calling himself "the spot" and mostly cuz gobbys a dick lol
But to think it never got resolved...Spidey never got to save MJ....after EVERYTHING!!....we find shes still alive, shes trapped out there somewhere...but we never get to find her...and spidey never comes back...
MCU kids? Imagine the snap permenently took out Tony Stark in Infinity War...and that was the end of the Avengers, nay the entire MCU...😂😂😂😂 lemme tell ya...
thankfully......Stan the Man always found a way to. Get. Back. Up...

It’s SO annoying that Blade doesn’t get his credit. It was his film that ushered in and begun the work of the MCU we have now. The OG X-Men and Spiderman continued the trend but it was Blade that ushered in a new age of awesome comic book films. Lets not forget that.

Blade might have been the first marvel character to have a successful movie, but it was not the first one featuring a black superhero or even be r rated. That belongs to Spawn which came out 1997. But the guy who made the character did help with the venom character, so he is heavily influenced by Venom.

I am massively obsessed with this version of spiderman, even though my first spiderman show was spectactular spiderman, the 1994 verison of SPIDERMAN is the best, i saw most of it online before sometime ago and now I watching it again that whole series needs to be revised as a MOVIE from the LIzard vs spiderman hobglobin vs spiderman venom vs spiderman greengoblin vs spiderman, the disappearance of mary jane, neogenics - spiderman- morbious-craven-punisher, the black cat-king pin, silvermane, Blade and Spiderman vs the queen of vampires, captain america-6 forgotten warriors vs the red skull, sinister 6, xmen and spiderman crossover, then the BEYONDER's CHALLENGE and then MULTIVERSE SPIDERMAN VS SPIDERCARNAGE and then there is also an exclusive episode on youtube that where you find out that MARY JANE is finally found but Spiderman is with Madame the Black web and she and spiderman are very close to where Mary Jane ended up, but unfortunately they missed her because Madame spider's dimension ship broke mid way to reach her, so Peter left her and was teleport'd to the area Mary Jane was calling Peter out from in a new universe time line. That last episode really gave hope to Spiderman fans to finally make peace with the end of the original series. The best part is you can hear the voice of that PETER and it's the same guy who did the voice of the original SPIDERMAN of 1994 series. That whol series should have been the FILM of current spiderman movies,

Toei did that a lot, back in the 70s. Tatsunoko as well. Animation was never very good (yeah yeah, deadlines, I know), but Mazinger Z tai Ankoku Daishogun is still legendary to this day.
Plot: Kabuto Kouji, a high school Chad by day and a super robot pilot by... different times of the day. He lives in Anywhere (real-life Atami-chou in reboot Shin Mazinger), Japan, Kouji fights against the evil robots of Doctor Hell after his grandfather dies and leaves him Mazinger Z-- an invincible mechanical monster that has the power to make Kouji a god or a devil. Kouji learns to pilot Mazinger, overcoming the difficulties of controlling the damn thing, culminating in the made-for-TV movie Mazinger Z vs The Great General of Darkness. It was here that the animation saw a drastic increase in quality, as well as pitting Kouji against his own mortality. For the first time, it's a very real possibility that Mazinger will lose against the general and his cronies. I highly reccomend the film to any comic book fans who want to get into Japanimation.

Like at least 1 in 5 of the cinema-goers/movie-viewers wont have spent their childhood in that Marvel cartoon golden era
But I do agree though and definitely feel without the cartoons who knows if we’d have had the 00s cartoons or X-Men movies or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man’s. The cartoons defo set off a snowball effect culminating with the MCU

For those of you that have the possibility, please give the 2nd Season of Fantastic 4 Show a try. The animation is so much better than in the first Season and its a really, really great show. Especially the episodes where the Fantastic 4 team up with Galactus to stop Ego or team up with Thor and Ghost Rider to stoo Galactus are outstanding in my opinion.

I brought up this same point in a comment just a few minutes ago. Heck the leads alone were a crossover. Spidey, future X Man Iceman, and Firestar who in the comics became a part time Avenger herself. So right there you have an XMan, an Avenger, and Spidey as the 3 leads.

Kendall Versus The connection is artificial, there's no real continuity across the shows except for that appearing in the Marvel Action Hour shows and Hulk. About Spider Man and X-Men, there's no proof of a real single continuity, but since both continuities don't contradict too much, it's been accepted that they occur in the same universe because of the episode "The Mutant Agenda", which loosely connects both shows. Marvel has never done it right and has tried it 3 times (Yostverse, Disney XD, and the current one).
