Batman Animated Series And The X-MEN are the greatest action cartoons ever known to mankind.
What about Superman
For sure top five!
I would add the 90s Spider-Man animated series to that list as well. Top 3 of all time for me.
Don’t forget about Batman beyond
With Gargoyles in third place.
I can still remember waking up early to watch all cartoons every Saturday morning with X-Men as my main event show.
You brought back memories with those true words....X-Men as the main event.
I still remember when this series came out it was around Halloween
O.G. SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS RULED!!!!
Also weekly TMNT
I felt the same with spiderman aswell 👍
This show was an integral part of my childhood and helped carve out the man I would be today. I remember watching this on Saturday morning cartoons every weekend. It taught me that anyone can be a hero, that character is how a person should be measured and that the right choices aren't always the easy ones. I'm greatful for the work these people did to create such inspiration.
Awesome, man. Cool name, too.
80% of my MARVEL knowledge comes from watching the X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons
Before the most recent years. Me too.
Well that's kinda sad. You missed out on a lot
Same. Plus another 15% was from video games.
The cartoons change things around sometimes so I wouldn't go by that.
In other words yall dont know shit about shit. Lol
No wonder is was so good, the writers ignored the execs!
That part
Nah those executive should be sent to the chopping block, they're the ones who ruin a good and money making tv shows.
No wonder it was so bad, they didn't even know about the comic.
No wonder it was so good, they were smart and hired writers who knew about the comics and those writers ignored the execs too!
Yes! Ignore the suits. That is the reason that most entertainment is trash today, a bunch of suits whom don't know what they're critiquing on let alone what they're into. If you have an apple farm, why in the heck do you hire a nut that can't keep a geranium alive or more than day to run it? Hire people that know what they're talking about and LEAVE IT ALONE.
I use to watch X-men and Power Rangers every Saturday morning.
Douglas Harding same! On Fox kids
Such a great time to grow up
The good old days 😊
Same
Seriously. They made my childhood 😊
Same here. Saturday cartoons were the best back then. Just sucks u gotta be really awake to stay up to watch em all. There's time I would fall asleep again and have to wait til next wknd
This series NEEDS to come back. We’re seriously in dark times right now.
It would probably be terrible and watered down.
Yup see also......Thundercats reboot
As a live action tv show
It could work
@@niagmcdiesel9911 Cartoon Network brought back a reboot of Thundercats years ago. And now...they have (facepalm...) "Thundercats Roar"
Every episode is on Disney plus
This was the show that introduced me to marvel. Jus brilliant stories. This was the only dark Phoenix storyline that was done correctly
andytanhw Too bad in this story of Dark Phoenix, Jean dies, instead of being saved...
Fernie Fernandez well kind of... later they claim that she lived in her cocoon hahaha.
But while i felt her “death” was awesome and well done in the comics, I get why they weren’t going to kill her in the cartoon
Here here! I said the same thing when walking out of the last X-men movie, that its really sad when the CARTOON nailed it. Oh, that and "They should have done Inferno!!!"
@@strider3164
They did something like that in the comics, as well. Jean Grey dying and sneakily resurrecting became something of a trope by the mid 2000s.
Anthony Sforza Yes, the comics were what I was talking about! Several years after she died in the comics, she came out of some huge lake in America in some psychic cocoon. Then I think it happened like 3-4 more times, but none of them meant anything after that.
To this day, the 90's X-Men cartoon is one of the greatest portrayals of time travel in any medium. They explore multiple concepts, yet manage to keep a fairly cohesive set of rules. That a kid's show managed to do this is truly amazing.
I remember when Pizza Hut gave out VHS copies of the episodes.
They came with a mini comic as well. They were awesome.
@@SwordOkami Yeah that too lol. I had the football player teen who shoots green bio orbs.
@@FlintlockRebel Yeah, that's the one! It was a two parter as well so you need to buy both tapes to complete the story!
Yes
And cards.....
This was the best animated superhero show of all time.
Batman animated series would like to have a word :). Just my opinion.
@@superchivo26 That show was pretty AMAZING too!!! But there is something in the X-Men show that make it very special for me
Agreed. It’s a matter of perspective as well, I LOVE the X-men show but thought the BAS was more complete as a series
@@superchivo26 There were so many amazing cartoons when they didn't have to treat kids like complete morons and appeal to every parents morals. Spiderman, Batman Beyond, XMEN Evolution, etc were all amazing as well.
I think X-Men: TAS is a great Saturday Morning Cartoon, while Batman: TAS is a great cartoon.
"Two guards.. two cards."

"This is too easy!"
First we charge the card, then we blow it up - Gambit
Kids today have no idea how awesome 80s and 90s Saturday mornings were. It makes me sad for the whole lot of them. Pjs, cereal, and cartoons till it was time to go out and play.
You knew that after Beakmans World it was time to go play.
Now that you mentioned it, kind of strange how Marvel had never continued this series in whatever medium, even in the comics. It's iconic and still has a huge following. I too would read the shit out of a continuation of this story
Actually in 2015 during the secret wars event one of the tie ins was the XMEN animated series and it came back for a bit
The 90s X-Men cartoon is the greatest hero cartoon ever better then anything
The Phoenix Saga was great and how can a kids cartoon get it right when two films mess it up royally. The fact it was a 5 episode arc and then a 4 episode arc for Dark Phoenix may have something to do with that. The Phoenix Saga should be an entire phase of the MCU, not crammed into one film. The Guardians, Thor, CM (I guess) could also deal with all the alien issues that arose, like the Kree, Skrulls, and Shi'ar Empire, in addition to the X-Men. Would be fun to see Gladiator mop the floor with CM.
well, if you are going with the pheonix saga... CM should not be there, because of rogue.
I never understood the logic...the story is there...2 or 3 episodes.(roughly the time of a short film)....so instead of a simple copy paste with new tech...no.no.no...lets come up with our own random shitty generic storyline.....WHY?!...it was alreadhy there!!
Did you not watch the video? The Animated Series succeeded because the writers had free reign to write what they wanted, while the Feature films were gutted by Fox before they even began filming.
The Phoenix Saga had one of my all time favourite Beast quotes. When a door is coming down on one of the ships, i think Gambit or Wolverine jump in to help Beast keep the door up. When the door continues to close down, Beast says in the most calmest of voices "It was the thought that counts!" Absolutely brilliant writing of one of the best cartoons ever. (I must apologise, i haven't seen the series since i used to tape every episode off the DJ Katt show on Sky TV, every Saturday morning, so details may be few)
The films were more concerned with making a quick buck than making a great character arc. The show took only 1/8 the time of the comics in establishing all the themes and character dynamics that were so unique, but they still hit all the bullet points of why it's known as one of the greatest story arc in X-men history. An arc so volatile and revolutionary that even the creators of the story fought with each other over the ending. Marvel would never be so loose with such a great story because they instead of making one decent movie, they could be looking at multiple sequels that could stretch across other characters stories, just like in the comics.
This show, mmpr, batman the animated series, and spiderman. That line up in the afternoons. 🔥🔥
Imagine a world where the X-Men are too obscure to push as a cartoon series.
They were the biggest thing in comics for a little while at the time, but it was the comic book world and execs didn't know naything.
I refuse to imagine a world that bleak.
So, the 70s?
I guess it was because of this cartoon that they became so big.
Jaeus A Marvel went through a tough time in history
Thing about the xmen 90s series it stuck close to the comics about 90% of the time so seeing wat I was reading on the screen was just awesome
As long as it's done right, I'd really wish they would bring this back. Love this cartoon!
I’ve loved binge watching this on Disney+
Me too
It’s on Disney+? Hopefully will be on uk version
This was the first thing i watched on Disney+
hiddenhandmusic almost a ago, the team that did the show proposed the idea to revive the show to Disney. Haven’t heard anything since.
Shit I got the First 3 seasons on DvD haha
Age of Apocalypse comic came out before One Man's Worth. I can't say that the show didn't think of it first, but the show absolutely came afterwards.
It takes 10+ months for the episode to be made.
I was thinking that too. However the episodes original airdate was September 95 (according to IMDB), & the AOA story ran at around about the same time, I think. I know WhatCulture is notorious for piss-poor research, but there may be truth to that one.
Legion Quest started in December of 1994. This is what birthed Age of Apocalypse. I really think the show didn't think of it first.
But the length of time it took for an episode to be made would mean that production for One Man's Worth had probably begun before Legion Quest was published. Ultimately, we might never know. But this at least seems plausible to me. It's possible that the two ideas were conceived at the same time by pure coincidence. The video nearly suggests that Legion Quest/AOA was adapted from One Man's Worth, but obviously that's not the case.
Age of Apocalypse came out first. One Man's Worth is a bastardized version of AoA. The show had AoA character designs. So unless Marvel saw the cameo shots of the secondary characters and then launched AoA with the EXACT costume designs from the cartoon, it's clear the show paid homage to that comic and not the other way around.
I’m sure most of us authentic 80’s babies & true 90’s teens who were & still are huge “superhero fans” have watched the “X-Men: The Animated Series” documentary already....😎
I haven't, but only because I didn't know about it. Where can I find it?
Justin Figgins there’s a documentary?
I haven't, never had the desire to read into it until now.

The reason the show was and always will be the most iconic incarnation of the X-Men on TV is because it pulled its fundamental vision (storylines, art, characters) from the most iconic X-Men era in comics: the 80's/90's; the era of Jim Lee/Marc Silvestri art + Chris Claremont writing. Lee's work on X-Men #1 (1991) was artistic game changer. Simple as that. The X-Men were never better between the late 80's and early to mid 90's, nor will they ever be.
ted you are so right the art and everything was taken from the comic that broke all record sales agitiveless x-men wich sold 1.5 million books even before the book was even completed however, what the narrater said was true the writer really didn't have a clue about the x-men
X-Men, Spiderman, and all the Batman cartoons were my "Soap Operas" as a young one. Remember in X-men there was a Female president? That was a big deal back then.
Its a big deal now, because it hasnt happened in America, and probably never will.
Or the Purple Man... Who was used in the Jessica Jones show, played by David Tennant.
@@AnthonySforza well yes, because The Purple Man is a Marvel character associated with Jessica Jones. It makes sense he is in her show 🤦
@@undetectedkiller who cares? You don’t vote for someone based on their genitalia
it's truly a shame that thanks to disney we will never get something this good ever again
Beast was played by the guy who played Turner on Maniac Mansion (and has played a biker or criminal on pretty much any Canadian made movie or tv show).
Rogue was played by an actress who later became a politician, but not before doing a full frontal role on Canadian TV.
Professor X was played by an actor from Road to Avonlea (and Marshall McLuhan in a Canadian Heritage Minute commercial).
Jubilee is Loonette from The Big Comfy Couch.
The actor who voiced Magneto was one of the first choices for the movie role.
The actor voicing Wolverine was previously known to Gen Xers in Canada as one of the hosts of Circus, which was basically a circus/variety show filmed in a tv studio.
Jubilee is the original claire renfield from resident evil 2
I loved this show dearly as a child! 😊 This is my childhood right here! I wish this was still on, I would still tune in every Saturday morning! 😀
I just love that storm was getting so much screen time
Agree.... Shame she was always the first to get shot (mostly out of the sky!) a fair amount of the time...but...it's still a better depiction than any of the live movies
Honestly I thought that they reduced her role a bit in the third to fifth seasons. I think she was most prominent in season one and two. Storm is my all time favorite character in marvel.
I had an issue when wolverine was mad that storm left the morlocks and was like you should have stayed with your people. Like wolverine she left Callisto in charge....
5:30 - "Because the writers were a married couple, they looked at these characters as people, not super heroes."
I guess married couples can only see people.
It's true. I see people all the time now.
Yeah I found this line to be really strange. It's like "Because the writer was 23, he saw the internal struggles of his characters not as a plot device but as a mirror for his own existential angst".
In writing, the very best character are the ones most of us can relate to. Being "super" just makes them more entertaining.
Married ppl have a different bond then single ppl ,most of your music is from ppl in relationship or broke up
@@SM-4359 Well so you're saying that singles see other people? Aren't they more qualified then?
I loved watching this show during the summer holidays. Brings back so many memories.
I just got this show on DVD, Season 1. Even though I was in my early 20s when it first aired, it was apart of my go-to shows on Saturday mornings. I wasn't leaving the house before it aired no matter what. Love this show.
Some of the best dialogue in any superhero show comes from Xavier, Magneto, Beast and Apocalypse. It's like they specifically wrote them as if they were in a Shakespearean play. Also, Xavier's deathbed words to everyone is touching. Good luck watching without getting choked up. Personal favorite is what he says to Cyclops. "Were I your father, I would tell you that no truer son could ever be."
Pryde Of The X-Men is AWESOME. It would have be a fantastic 80s show
I know, right?
@Ryan Stewart Pryde is the best depiction of the X-Men!
Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t this episode supposed to be loosely tied with Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends? His show had a couple of episodes dedicated to the X-Men
@@terryr7622 It had no connection, except being part of the show's cartoon block. It was supposed to be the jump off of the X-man series but it was too ahead of it's time
I’m sorry, but that arcade game was phenomenal.
Got to relive some of this nostalgia through the _X-Men: Legends_ games.
Voices were different, but they got the characters right.
Amazed they didn't mention the kickass Japanese X-Men intro
Bjørn Edvard Holmberg I just discovered the Japanese intro the other day, it’s pretty awesome.
Good, but not nearly as good as the American version.
Bjørn Edvard Holmberg Or dare I say Kitty Pryde was missing entirely...
Some time ago I got my hands on a DVD with the phoenix saga as it was in the X-Men cartoon. There were some ruff spots due to it being several 20 min. episodes being stacked together, but it's still much much better than both cinematic takes on that story. IMO that tells enough about how good that show was.
Annnnnd marvel just uploaded a new X-men trailer. After 20 years we are finally getting a sequel
My "mom" made me work on Saturday mornings, so I missed out on the 1992 X-men cartoon series. Now I would do almost ANYTHING to have that series on DVD! Love you, Beast!❤
This was by far my favorite cartoon when i was a kid. I watched it on a channel where they did do the episodes out of order and only recently was able to watch it all in order from start to finish. It was so great and my first exposure to x men as a look kid although its great story telling has soured me on the later live action movies it still gets me all nostalgicy
From the first episodes, my favorite character was Morph. I was rather surprised that he wasn't in the comic books-- and it took me years to find out that he was a character who was a villain all the way back in the 1970s and killed off the retcon them killing Xavier.
TheHobgoblyn with me it was a tie between Morph and Gambit.
The comics reintroduced Morph in Age of Apocalypse. He did not resemble either the comic book or animated versions as his normal form
was not human. While he had a biped form he looked amorphous.
However, his personality was clearly based on pre-Sinister animated Morph.
Morph is in the comics but under a different name. In the comics he's called Changeling.
He gets so much respect he didn’t know anything about x men so he went out got a book about the X man and then said you know what I’m gonna get some comic book nerds why couldn’t Kathleen Kennedy do that? Instead she ruined Star Wars
Why can't the Hickeyman do that now for the comics?
Why couldn’t they do that for this video?
Mabe you should put aside the original trilogy and all your spin-off Star Wars books and comics...the saga has only improved because it had adapted and evolved beyond the same 3 characters and plots!! If you can’t handle that fact and are too busy stuck in the past, we’ll it is people like you that have ruined Star Wars, not her!
Ryan Cochran Star Wars had already evolved from the same 3 Characters Way before Kathleen Kennedy came to town but since she didn’t know anything about Star Wars she decided to make the books the video games and the comic books non-canon there were all your extra characters right there so Kathleen Kennedy brought Star Wars back to the same three characters. Star Wars. Had already moved beyond that she took it back and then in her genius she says she’s not gonna make Star Wars for Star Wars fans well hello that’s how you make your money. I totally understand trying to bring new people in but you can’t destroy your base when you do that or things like this all happened. So no it was not me that ruined Star Wars they took none of my ideas into consideration so get your feelings out of this and talk facts.
She was more interested in making fan-fiction than making Star Wars. Hence, we have a crop of movies that I will never consider as canon
The best ending chapter for me was (and is) "Descent": not only the origin of my favorite villain, but also a promise of mutant heroes lingering across time and ages.
The 90s Xmen series is one of the best cartoon series ever, I even had my mother watching it with me, they definitely need to bring it back!
Pryde of the Xmen, is still the most spot on for character depictions!
Wolverine is not Australian though
@@ImDaJuggernaut1 They would've smoothed it out in later episodes... unfortunately it never happened
The Legion Quest/Age of Apocalypse storyline preceded the writing of ‘One Man’s Worth.’
The character of Holocaust was created for the AoA, yet he appears in the episode as part of Magneto’s army.
kelman727 Thank you! I heard that and thought errrr well that was bollocks, as you mentioned they even adapted versions of characters created for Age of Apocalypse For the cartoon, like the AoA Forge.
Man they need to bring this cartoon back! Thanks for the video! Brought back some great memories!
X-Men was my most favorite cartoon show of the 90's! I watched and recorded every X-Men show that came on Saturday morning LOL No other cartoon looked better than and was as mature as the X-Men from the early 90's!
I love X-Men: TAS! They were my first heroes when I was a kid and I saw it in Spanish back in PR in the 90’s. I love this series
I loved pride of the xmen the animation for that cartoon was amazing at that time I had never seen anything like it and to this day it's one of my favorites
Dr 0ld School ABSOLUTELY AGREED
I still adore it to this day
For me this was the Greatest X-Men Cartoon Series of All Time! And it happens to be one of my Favorite Cartoons of All Time as well. Plus the X-Men video game was a Classic, regardless of what the haters would say.
THANKYOU!! This is one of my favorite shows from the 90's.
I loved this cartoon. Was glad to see they brought in Psylocke....saddened she was only in it for an ep or two.
I hated when the animation changed in season 5. The show didn't feel the same after that 😖
That's when it started to feel like the shitty X-Men Evolution.
@@JessicaChastainFan lol
@Frizzurd lol
It's funny to see that the quality of animation for the "lost" pilot episode looked higher that the later show. The show was still fantastic though especially with the multipart story lines like The Dark Phoenix. One of my favorite things this show did were the multiplane action scenes in which the camera seemed to fly between each member of the X-Men and the adversary they were fighting. Good tines.
Used to watch it on Saturdays lol best version of the X Men period.
I wish there were a dozen more x-men cartoons. Really it’s like a small handful
We need a reboot of X-Men the animated series!
Man how cool it will be if we can go back to the 90s and be a kid again....... Saturday mornings were awesome.......
This was super cool. I loved this cartoon as a kid. It's what made me fall in love with the X-Men
I loved this show the one thing I HATED is they would get to the apocalypses saga and then restart airing from episode 1
Speaking of X-Men, am I the only one who still has some hope left that we'll eventually get Wolverine and the X-Men season 2?
I always wondered why they didn't make a Season 2. It was a good show

@Filip Sosnowski Don't get me wrong, I surely WANT it as much as the next guy, but actual hope? Yeah, probably just you, lbs
To be fair, Wolverine and the X-Men’s Season 1 has twice as many episodes as Season 1 of Evolution or TAS.
I went to Michigan State University in early 90s, show came on around 10:30 or 11am...Xmen & Sausage McMuffins w/egg made wake-n-bake Saturday mornings extremely special thanks to this awesome show!

Those little cameos were awesome.
Don't forget that the X-Men animated series theme song was based off the Whitney Houston hit "I'm your baby tonight" lol 😎👍

Well Dazzler was actually in the Dark Phoenix saga in the show for about a few episodes. It was cool.
She's actually my favorite person to play on the game.
10 months to finish an episode....you gotta love the effort put into the series.
I didn't really watch alot of this show when it came out mostly because I was too young but seeing now to its entirety, I loved it. Except for majority of the final season cause just wow.
This was groundbreaking.
In the first episode morpho "died" and beast was arrested.
We kids went WTF?!
Shit happened straight away. I learned alot about discrimination and how to treat people aswell from these shows. There was messages in this that I could comprehend at an early age.
Most of the animated series of that time never had an ending to be fair xD
My mind was blown with just the first entry. I had a VHS of "Pryde of the X-Men" growing up; I always wondered why it seemed so different to the rest of the TV series but that explains so much!
Great series; I was already out of comics for years by this point, so this was actually how I learned of so many changes to the comic series (Sinister, Apokolyps, Cable, Wolverine's more detailed origin, you name it). And thanks to Spider-Man, it was the original MCU (which also brings to mind that any collected release of this show is incomplete without his Secret War episodes). Hope the new show continuing it does it justice.
“mind blowing” is a bit strong isn’t it?
Lol previously on X-Men was great filler concept. Even has RUclips parody vids. I can acknowledge that is mind-blowing
No, there really wasn't anything like it on TV before, at least not anything geared towards sugar-loaded kids on Saturday mornings besides Batman TAS, but until those shows came out, the best superhero cartoons were cornball fare like Super Friends and Fantastic Four which were more Scooby-Doo than serious teledrama.
I actually think it's an understatement. They basically were the cartoon Mcu
Dargonhuman I remember feeling impressed when The NY Times wrote an article about the impact of X-Men: TAS in their Sunday entertainment section.

Shout out for static shock
Rob Daniels Static Shock, Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond and the original series Gargoyles and The Pirates of Dark Water were all excellent.
The animation of those last few episodes still give me anxiety. I honestly dont like watching them.
They never aired those where I live so I don't have that reduction of quality issue. The last episode I remember is Apocalypse in the axis of time. "I have spent a dozen lifetime in the axis learning to master its powers. I will not be denied."
Professor X felt different: "...outside the axis, and with your Lazarus Chamber gone. You will simple cease to exist. The end of time -- for you.
This series was why I loved beast..and the episode when beast went nuts on anti-mutant group and wolverine ended up using his brains to help was a good episode.
