So today I wanted to take a look back at the old MARVEL animated movies, I myself haven't been a fan of the recent DC animated movies, I feel as if DC have lost their touch, and I think the answer to the dip in quality hides somewhere within the history of the old marvel animated movies :O

    • @orinanime
      @orinanime 4 года назад +4

I don't really think that the runtime is actually an issue.
The Marvel movies here all have about the exact same runtime as your top ten DC animated movies.
TDKR is an exception, because it's two movies split up and put together.
Batman Year One is actually the shortest. Almost 10 minutes shorter than any of the others.
      Marvel movie runtime:
      Ultimate Avengers: 72min
      Ultimate Avengers 2: 73min
      Iron Man: 83min
      Doctor Strange: 76min
      Next Avengers: 78min
      Plant Hulk: 81min
      Thor: 77min
      DC movies runtime:
      New Frontier: 75min
      Wonder Woman: 73min
      Green Lantern: 77min
      Under the Red Hood: 75
      Apocalypse: 78min
      All-Star Superman: 76min
      Year One: 64min
      Doom: 77min
      Flashpoint Paradox: 81min

Marvel is a massive success in the box office, and recognized worldwide. Meanwhile, DC has a firm grip when it comes to TV series and Animated movies, only recognized nationwide.
In other words, Marvel is famous around the world, and DC is only popular here in the United States.

God Loves, Man Kills was from a time when graphic novels were meant to be as movie-like as a comic could be at the time. That had the best story but the most summer blockbuster-esque would have to be Revenge of the Living Monolith. I'd live to see both of those animated on the big screen. It's 2020 so there's no need for a bunch of hero origins. We all know who they are.

Marvel never makes animated movies about characters and storylines people care about. You don’t see DC out here making Martian Manhunter or Dr. Fate animated films. So, I find it odd that we got a Dr. Strange and Ironman before we got X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. I don’t mind them using D-list characters, but I don’t want them to introduce me to a animated Marvel Universe, they are follow up characters. Most fans probably would rather watch a Batman movie more so than a Thor or Dr. Strange film. Plus, everything looks like a cell shaded depiction of The Ultimate Universe. In the mid 2000s, Marvel was completely obsessed with making everything look like The Ultimate Universe, so the films aged like milk. That’s why I’m not so keen on them making everything look like the MCU. Planet Hulk was probably the best film out of all these mediocre animated films.

I watched these movies around 7 years ago and I had mostly forgotten them. I want to mention what I do remember to bring more positives to light.
In Doctor Strange, while it was bland on whole, I did like during the training montage that Strange had to actually work hard to earn the magic. Carrying heavy stones and building walls out of granite. It felt like Karate Kid and it made magic feel like something you really had to work for. I feel like the live action film, while mostly superior, was missing that element when Doctor Strange was learning magic.
I don't remember much from the others, but Planet Hulk is by far the best. It's also the most mature in all the series. You repeatedly described the other films as childish adventures which are fine. But that cannot be said about Planet Hulk. The genocide committed with the spikes is terrifying. The bloodshed is brutal. The stakes are grounded and it really feels like something of worth is achieved when you get to the end. I first saw Planet Hulk on RUclips where is was available for free for a while and as young tweenager I remember being genuinely shocked by how fearless the violence was. Especially when compared to most cartoons I was watching at the time. Out of all the films here, Planet Hulk I returned to at least three times. and It's the only one I could recommend to non-comic book fans as I feel it is telling a story that can be accessible to more than just nerds or super hero loving kids.

Idc what anyone says. Hulk vs Wolverine was an absolute masterpiece. The soundtrack was haunting and gave the erie wilderness vibe as Logan claws through unknown in search of rampaging Goliath. The plot was actually really intriguing as the Hulk losing control has a little bit to do with Logan’s traumatic past but they don’t overdo the exposition and it just simply plays out. The funny humorous scenes with Deadpool didn’t once feel like it belonged in a different film and meshed really well with the overall flow. I also just love e concept of there not being an actual winner between Hulk and Wolverine. It just shows that these two predators are meant for each other to duke it out forever. In my opinion their terrible. They have an absolutely terrible animation style that doesn’t even come close to rivaling previous animators like Bruce Tim and what not. The animation is supposed to based off Jim Lee’s New 52 art style but just end up looking like tacky and effortless. Batman has bent ears and a chin strap, while Superman is wide as shit, and I hardly even reckognized Wonder Woman the first time. She looks like she’s starving. The storylines are very poor and bland and every film is just predictable and pointless. Also the fact that they have the biggest Damian agenda and they nerf Nightwing too irritates me. Damian for some reason is the Tony Stark of this universe and center of attention which makes zero sense. This universe is supposed to be loosely based off the New 52 but hardly sticks to the source material which I’ll say isn’t a bad thing but they just go in a direction that’s completely boring and pointless. They ruined Hush, Court of Owls, Throne of Atlantis, Batman and Son, and Judas Contract which are some of my favorite books ever in DC. I honestly miss the old team that used to tackle DC animation that included the likes of Bruce Tim, Andrea Romano, Jay Olivia, Lauren Montgomery, etc. these people defined what DC animation is with the most praised movies. These same guys brought Under the Red Hood, Tower of Babel, Year One, TDKR, Jeph Loeb’s Public Enemies, and so much to life. They had original music done by Christopher Drake and not the same repetitive theme they play in the DCAMU. DC animation was top tier once and in my opinion was more than capable of measuring dick size with the big bad Marvel Studios but now their just a joke with terrible art, horrendous voice work, and effortless quality not nearly matching some of their predecessors in the animation game. I want the old team back so badly it’s unreal.

The part in Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow where we see Ultron's trophy room is actually more dark then you think. Not only do we see relics from the dead Avengers, but we are shown more in the background. You can't see clearly into them but maybe you're supposed to leave it to your imagination to grow the dread. Those other trophy cases could be holding gear and other things from the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men, and any other hero or villain who died fighting Ultron.

I think you're too dismissive of the MCU myself. I hear the "they're all the same!" criticism a lot, and I just don't buy it. Far From Home and Guardians of the Galaxy seem pretty different to me, just as Avengers: Endgame feels very different from Iron Man 1, and so on. And really, the MCU movies having internal consistency is a good thing, because for a shared universe, you don't want radically different, incompatible visions, which was a problem that the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy suffered from.
Likewise, I actually do think that the MCU does a good job of letting its director's voices shine through in their movies. Captain America: TFA had a different director than the one for the second and third movies, and it has a different tone and flavor to it. Likewise, the Avengers talks like a Joss Whedon movie, Black Panther feels like a Ryan Coogler movie, and so on. So not only does the MCU sometimes choose bigger directors, but I think they do a better job of letting individual director's voices shine through then you and others have suggested. And again, why wouldn't we want internal consistency? I also don't think choosing smaller name directors is such a bad thing.
Finally, I disagree with you on Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay and Batman: Hush. Those are two of the better DCAO movies to come out recently, and cherry-picking one negative review on RT for each of them as "proof" that they're bad while ignoring the more positive reviews they got elsewhere, is a little disingenuous.
With all that said, I think your criticisms of Iron Man and Doctor Strange are pretty valid, and I especially agree with you that Planet Hulk is the best of the lot here.

Daniel Lauricella I see a lot of people defending the MCU for letting their directors have their own voice for each installment. But, people often forget the mishap that happened during the making of AntMan. Edgar Wright, a well respected director, had this whole vision for what AntMan was gonna be. Though, because what he wanted differed too much from the formula Disney wanted, he was flat out taken out of the project. Disney, in my opinion, doesn’t care for consistency, but more of their profitable formula that they can exploit.

    • @daniellauricella5132
      @daniellauricella5132 4 года назад +5

@@angelortiz-uq3if But consistency is still a side-effect of the MCU formula, and a good one. Further, I actually think Ant-Man turned out pretty good all things considered. Is it the best MCU movie? I don't think so, but I do think it exceeded people's (admittedly low), expectations.
Besides, the story of Ant-Man's development doesn't necessarily reflect all MCU movies. Again, the directors for the first and second Cap movies were different, and those movies do feel distinct. So different director's voices do shine through in individual MCU movies despite the endless claims to the contrary.
I hope people defend them as you say. I guess I've just been unlucky enough that I rarely see it. These days it feels like MCU hate is everywhere online. Personally, I blame Scorcese for giving them someone to rally around.

@@daniellauricella5132 I completely see what you mean, and I will say some movies from the MCU do stand out on their own. But, that's few and far between, and because of the similarities in most of them (due to the formula), I think they just blend in, in a bland way. I honestly agree with what Martin Scorsese said about Marvel Movies and the state of the cinema industry all together. Am I saying all of the MCU is garbage and the death of cinema like all the haters say? Absolutely not, but their flaws are still very present to me.

Personally, I think Justice Society: WWII, Batman: Soul of the Dragon, Gotham by Gaslight and Superman: Red Son show that even DC movies made in the era of the old Marvel crew making DC movies are more ambitious than the Marvel animated movies were. It probably has everything to do with Marvel always having prioritized their live-action feats over animation and DC having enough Warner Bros money to try things. When the bonus content for every Marvel feature includes the creators saying, "It's one man's journey," I think they were either not allowed to or not interested in trying anything beyond what could get the movie over with as quickly and cleanly as possible (but I did like Doctor Strange). I do think there was a huge drop in DC quality in everything after Red Hood, though.
I imagine it stems from what the creators are encouraged to do and that DC has a lot more one-shots and mini-series outside of continuity to draw from whereas almost everything Marvel is steeped in continuity and harder to make into a standalone tale...But it was probably mostly the higher-ups limiting them.

I am so glad I'm not the only one to say the same thing about the animations in those movies. It only gets harder and harder to stomach, especially when combined with characters mostly being straight-up mad.

Mask of the Phantasm was pre "direct to dvd era", the first official DC animated movie was Superman Doomsday in 2007, MotP, Subzero and others were prior to this era, one day I'll do a video on the older animated movies, especially Mask of the Phantasm.

Marvel animation needs to go darker, harder, and more mature. Seriously, there's never any blood, no cursing, no sexuality, nothing. Like it's all made for 10 year olds.

I agree with your point on the MCU having lost their individuality especially with Captain Marvel as well as Thor Ragnarok in my opinion I much prefer Kenneth Branaghs take on the Odinson character much more because it felt different from Iron Man and Hulk and Spider-Man etc a new character that was extremely unique too me

Ragnarok feels unoriginal? Taika Waititi is one of the most distinct comedic directors working right now, what do you mean, the other 2 Thor movies were fine, but they suffered from a lack of style and personality

I really hope Marvel do take a look back at the Direct to DVD, or Direct to Disney + or whatever animated films.
The main reason is that there are so many stories from the comics that I'd love to see adapted to screen and the MCU simply can't. For a start any story looking at Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov, Thanos, etc those simply can't be made, these characters are dead and gone (or at least elderly and not able to fight ) in the MCU, so animated films could give us these stories.
