For many, this movie is what The Ultimates comics should have been: A modern version of the Avengers, but at the same time not ashamed of its roots. And as a movie, I have to say that even though it has several flaws, this movie and its sequel are still holding up pretty decently. Maybe less so now but in the early days Thor had a time limit where he turns back into a human when separated from his hammer, and it’s stupid that the hammer arbitrarily picks people to be like yeah you get the same power as a marvel powerhouse, by lifting me up instead of just being a hammer that’s heavy. Like it is in the myth and it’s the fact that it’s being wielded by Thor that it’s feared by all.

The Ultimate movies and EMH’s really do make Cap feel like a man out of time, from Ultimate Cap revisiting Bucky and the fallen to EMH’s meeting Fury and telling him about his connections. They truly make him feel like a living legend with no identity in the modern age.

It's a good Steve Rogers movie, but not a good Captain America movie. The whole World War II parts just don't feel as heavy as the characterization they gave to the protagonist.
It's like the opposite of 'Wonder Woman', where the best parts were the World War I parts showing Wonder Woman and the weaker ones were of Princess Diana in Themiscyra.
If they made the 'Captain America' war scenes like they did in 'Wonder Woman', with all the struggles people were facing at war, it would've been perfect.

And the reason why he was so mad in the first place is because he was kicked off the team, trying to prove to them that he is a substantial member to the team he was in his office for countless days making robots and the wasp was worried about Hank. being frustrated he got angry and did a "get away from me" pose and stuck her across the face

I think something that doesn't get enough appreciating in this movie is how much it tries to have realistic stakes to everything and that is something that I only realize now as an adult.
Captain America having insecurities as a leader makes him fail, but also better for having to deal with that responsability over his own needs. Iron Man having a secret identity hinders him, but also makes him better for having to stand all that criticism in silence. Thor going against his own father leaves him by himself, but also makes him better for having to hold his ground on what he believes. Ant-Man having struggles to follow orders makes him fail, but also makes him better for having to learn to work with others. And all of that is only the characters and their arcs.
All of them are seen as superheroes, but deep down they're all just humans just like anyone else. They have flaws, they make mistakes, they get hurt, they suffer with their regrets, but they always choose to get back up and try again, even if that means sacrificing their lives to do what has to be done in order to do what's right.
Seeing them being almost killed in such brutal ways really made me think about how this story could've easily ended up like an episode from 'The Boys'.

This resulted in the creation of the mutants, the spider that bit Peter Parker, the Osborne formula, the Hulk's creation, and Captain America's analogues in Europe.

This movie was definitely what The Ultimates should have been, considering they're much closer to the original Avengers rather than the blatant super soldiers we got in the Ultimate Universe. Of course, a big reason why The Ultimates was the way it was had been the result of a post-9/11 media landscape, in which it was largely Mark Millar critiquing President Bush's foreign policy without explicitly bringing up things like Iraq and Afghanistan or things like that.
Unsurprisingly, those comics did NOT age well, this movie aged much better than they did, and now we have a better version of even THIS with the 2012 movie.

Ultimates cap is the best cap. EMH is 2nd because I feel like he did not live up to his true comic strength. But can we talk about how ultimate was able to 1v1 the hulk? Even tho he defeated Ant Man and Thor and Stark, he still choose to stand up to the Hulk, even tho he knew he was no match. I truly love this Cap wish this was the 2012 Avengers movie. Can we also admire the amount of times Cap was ragdolled? Also I love how he just tell's Hulk am not done with and just punched him in the face was Fucking fantastic!.

    • @darn4285
      @darn4285 Год назад +5

Agreed. However, there is no movie or shows that got Cap "fully" right but just some aspects of him.
Like Ultimates is Cap with his compelling man out of time driven story, leadership or tactical skills, never say die attitude and superhuman physical abilities.
EMH is Cap with his inspirational speeches, commanding presence and noble character.
MCU Cap with his peerless fighting skills whether martial arts or otherwise.
There are so many parts of what makes comic book Captain America great that is never adapted to its last drop in his mainstream incarnations. Ultimate Avengers is the closest however.

@@darn4285 💯 and something people don't realize, nor the Dr. Who(pun) created the SSS knew, was that just like Hulk who gets stronger when he gets angrier, Steve does so also to a lesser degree but based on WILL POWER not anger and it explains 90% of 'plot armor' seen in his tales.
People go by his BASE stats of 800lbs overhead lift, but that was 40 years ago and he's grown physically since the 1950s when he had a more slim figure (looks 180lbs) and was very fast and strong back then.
In the late 1980's onward he was 40-60lbs bigger.
That's 40lbs+ of SSS muscle, not regular muscles.
His bones are denser, overall everything is enhanced and in SYNERGY, but most people think he's just on Super Steroids and just 'Strong'.
Cap man handled Iron Fist with only BASIC fighting moves, as narrated straight from Danny's thoughts.
Yet I see people putting IF and others, above Cap on H2H fighting lists.smh.

I don't know why people approach the Ultimates as if they were meant to be a hip retelling of the Avengers, when from the get go the comic states it's gonna be a deconstruction of the Avengers (AKA: the most cynical mainstream superhero team) inserted in a context of sociopolitical control by the American government in which security and entertainment has become weaponized. It's like reading Watchmen and saying it's bad because of its bleakness and nihilism, when the point of the whole thing is to expose the bleak and senseless violent world of the 80s!
The threat of the Hulk, for instance, is just to depict the overall incompetence of the government and how they would attempt and succeed at turning an accidental tragedy into a marketing stunt for the superhero team they just spent millions on. It's never feels "epic" or "heroic" because it's never meant to be so. In a meta way, it's what the writers for the subsequent adaptations do.
The 2012 movie and this one just take surface elements from the Ultimates because they don't really dare to do any of that and instead decide to be just a modern retelling of the Avengers, which is fine on its own, but really makes most comparisons invalid.
