The Secret Wars was massive. I still have the original 12 issue run from 1984-85 stored away. The sequel, Secret Wars II, ran for 9 issues and apparently not remembered as fondly as its predecessor. Not only that, this series finally ends all arguments as to who is the baddest Marvel villain ever....and mantle goes to Doctor Doom (sorry, Thanos!) Great synopsis.

I've honestly always looked at Secret Wars being the comic story that took something I did, in reading comics, that was a 'secret' to something that was now something everyone did. Comic stores in my hometown grew from the one I used to go up to about six or seven in one city alone. I think it was what started me moving on from comics, which was probably not its intended purpose.

Interesting enough, much like in the event was crossover between many heroes from different comic books, the Spider man TAS version was crossover between heroes from the Marvel animated series at the time (Spider man, Lizard and Black cat from Spider man TAS, Iron Man from Iron Man TAS, Storm from X-men TAS and Fantastic Four from their own animated series).

Secret Wars 2015 was an absolute mess. And a missed opportunity for a real reboot by Marvel. The concept was good but the execution was sloppy. Late releases…even adding an issue in the middle of it. It just wasn’t well thought out. The build up, Time Runs Out was fantastic but Marvel dropped the ball. At least the original had a cohesive story that had long lasting changes to the status quo. And if DC took their sweet time with Crisis, that’s their fault.

I view the 1982 series "Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions" as a trial run on this very thing. There was a toy line and it involved a plot that would bring together dozens of superheroes to battle one another. Of course, it was only 3 issues and was not as successful or as influential, but it remains the predecessor to both Crisis and Secret Wars.

The story that made me realize that Dr Doom is the greatest Marvel villain to ever be created. Really wish he would have gotten his time in the spotlight before the MCU did the Infinity arc, because Doom will look weak comparatively in any ensuing movie (as will anyone compared to literal Infinite power), and IMAGINE if they had to deal with Doom showing up to assist with destroying Thanos after seeing him as a villain for a few movies. Because he absolutely would have. He has a country and people to care for. He coulda fought with Tony about tech, and Strange about magic, and talked down to Thanos about wielding power properly. There were so many opportunities. He definitely would have cozied up to Wanda because he would have immediately recognized her as the most powerful being in the MCU. Fucking hell, I'm making myself sad lol.
Doom is the best, but unfortunately, they refuse to do anything with him without bringing the boring ass FF along with him, and just portraying him as a power hungry idiot to be beat up by stretchy fists and family love. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I was new into comic books when Secret Wars dropped. The only controversy I remember was Spider-man getting a black suit to replace his iconic one. That said, while I didn't own the comics for years, my friend had them and I read them several times at his house. This was how I was introduced to The Avengers and Fantastic Four as my only interest at the time was X-Men and Spider-man. As such, it worked great to advertise the other comics (I cared nothing for toys) and I eventually started collecting The Avengers, Fantastic Four, and then by '86, West Coast Avengers.

Yeah, even though people crossed over in titles all the time, the multiple character crossover was really first done in Contest of Champions. It's easy to forget that Marvel had somehow thrived for over 20 years without a single "Event." It's incomprehensible now, of course.

(Plus, it might be the die-hard Spidey fan in me, but that brief skirmish wherein he clobbers pretty much the entire X-Men roster is still one of my favourite bits from this story to this day...!!!).
PS: Speaking of iconic '80s comics that were designed to sell toys, any chance we could get a video on the equally-awesome G1 Marvel Transformers series any time soon, please...? (Preferably the Marvel UK ones, but I'm not fussy, yes...?!)

This began me reading comics until 1992, right after The Infinity Gauntlet wrapped everything up nicely, and I had better things to spend money on (for many, many reasons my 18yr old self had). I feel lucky to have read Marvel comics during this 8 year span, which allowed me to fully appreciate everything the MCU has done.
