I have a Euro-spec '68 Bug that has a couple of parts never used on US models so I couldn't source them from any of the US vendors when I restored the car. Got them from Heritage, zero complaints..
Heritage have kept many of my water cooled classic VW’s on the road, great company that evolved from the Original “Big boys toys” company based in Essex England 👍🏻
I’ve used Heritage Parts, and completely agree on their shipping speed (from UK to Melbourne Australia!). I order parts locally, and they don’t arrive as fast! Plus, a lot of their parts are cheaper than locally sourced parts! Crazy!!
I laughed out loud seeing Matt tightening the bolt instead of Lefty Loosening it. How many times have I done that in 50 years of working on my vehicles? Too many. And thanks for the heads up about Heritage Parts. I use the Bus Depot a lot for parts, but it’s always good to have a choice. 😎👍
Awesome vlog boys!!! I love the nuts and bolts ones! And this one was a easy one ( for me watching!) Cant believe Matt Jackson was working! Sorry Matt you know your awesome! and so is Helga the bus!
When You take out the Stand studs and pull the alt / gen stand removing the fan can be done on the bench I replace the studs with large set screws i guess you could cheap out and slot the studs
Had to do an "engine in" generator swap some years back. Took quite a bit longer than and hour. Quite a learning experience. It's a good idea to document how the original shims were orientated. I ended up using a camera to make sure I had proper fan clearance.
After the washboard roads in Big Bend it’s amazing an engine didn’t fall out, cool to find another parts suppler, I think I bought 3 new master cylinders for my Vert, before one worked.
Hi guys I did this exact job after I got my alternator rebuilt did the exact reversal when refitting however when I tighten the rear fan nut the alternator doesn’t more it’s too much. Do you know if the wave washer makes a difference I put it back on with the curve facing the fan. Also the fan is rubbing on the shroud too 😩 just seeing if you have any advice on the above? Thanks so much
I changed the Generator on my 68 Bay without pulling the engine, I removed it with the fan on, just remove the Manifold and Generator stand and it comes out easily. Did the same on my Beetle too.
We managed to change ours while on holiday, but I lifted the fan shroud to get the alternator off, didn't remove the big rear nut until it was off the van, pain to do but worked.
What brand is this alternator? Im working on finishing up my ultimate bus motor for a big trip but am stumped on what is the best quality alternator as ive seen some new ones be not so great. Thank you.
Fantastic video, yet again. Omg, you have used a company I use here in England. I get a lot from them. I don’t get the privilege of a T-shirt lol. There are others that are great like machine7 and custom and commercial also, these guys sell the best quality parts and reproduction parts.☺️✌🏻
Another very enjoyable video boys.👍Heritage parts are OK, but a bit expensive. Try Alan Schofields VW here in England. He stocks a wide range of early bus/bug parts and he's not so expensive as Heritage. His site always gives an honest appraisal of the quality of the stock, and he tells you where its from! Keep the great videos coming. 👏
Great clip, can someone please point me to a video explaining how to test an alternator in a Beetle while it’s in the car? I found one on generator that removed both the cables near the front, but my car doesn’t start if they’re removed. Specifically I want to test whether it’s outputting sufficient voltage…
You put a voltage meter on the top post of your alternator on the positive of your voltage meter. And then you just ground the negative on your voltage meter to anything on the body
Jason at Old Volks TV has the 'hippie hole' on his 65 Riviera Camper, and I must admit, it is a nice thing to have! Guess that's why they started putting them in Buses in '73!
points ? what is that lol dont they have pertronix in texas. i have done this recently on my 69 westy pulled the alt stand and the whole unit came out, i have dual carbs with texas air cooled linkage didnt even have to remove the linkage. shout out to jack at bug stuff for alternator at a great price
Points is what you can fix at the side of the road unless the road is right next door to Texas Instruments semiconductor factory. My old ones live in a box under the seat.

I think a Dual Port, if your Beetle is a DP, is a bit tougher. Key is getting the fan nut off first and then taking out the 4 fan shroud mount bolts, if they are bolts and not cheeseheads like they were on Helga the Bus!
Uhhh.maybe someday I can either buy another or find my old bus. I miss the day when once a month I would pull the motor just to clean it for the fun of it.

I’m not sure what to believe now, because I’ve done a lot of research, and everyone says the Hoover bit is for a doghouse oil cooler. Which mine is not. My Oil cooler just comes straight up out of the case. not offset like the doghouse.
Great tips on replacing the alternator. Nice it can be done without removing the engine. Thanks for the video guys! I hope the storm doesn’t wipe you out in TX again! #vwlife

EASIER WAY Remove the 4 screws on the fan housing. LEAVE THE FAN ON!!!! loosen the fan shroud bolts (one on each side behind the intake manifolds. LIft up the fan shroud about 2 inches gen comes right out with the fan on. takes a little wiggle but not too hard. Usually takes me less than an hour to change one.
Provided there isn’t air flaps and a thermostat. Otherwise you’re dealing another price of tin and removing the thermostat. Also needs to be hex head bolts and not flat heads in the side of the shroud behind the intake on each side. Doghouse shroud and tin will be a little more work also.
Terrible advice. Pull the engine & do it right. This video convinced me to not drop the engine…5 hours later, I could’ve pulled the engine, replaced the alternator & reinstalled it. Don’t fall for this. It’s much faster to drop the engine, remove the fan shroud & replace the alternator & reinstall the engine. Took me 2 hours in my 1967 VW Bug, would’ve been 2-3 hours on my 1971 Bus.

wheres the part about the regulator?
The alternator is just like your normal single pole but there is a hatch to swap out the regulator on top. I guess we should of shown that
