That's for sharing the back stories on Jerry and Helga. When a vehicle is as old as these two, they develop personalities. I think most people get behind an old VW bus and chill out. I always think of my older sister that was always hanging out with friends in a VW bus. I realize that the old bus is doing the best it can to get down the road. I've always given the right of way to turtles and I have stopped many times and carried a turtle across the road to safety. I'm the same way with VW buses, well any old car. They've earned it because they are survivors. Wonderful video and it was worth the wait. Best Wishes, Ivor
Yes what a great way to put it Ivor!
Ivor , are you in the United States?
@@VWLifeVW oh yes. Nacogdoches.
Ivor please go to this page and send us an email so we can send you a copy of VolksAmerica Magazine! ruclips.net/channel/UC6shQNsfSrwm-BBx57hgEVQabout
I thought Helga looked familiar. I remember following the build thread a while back. Great bus Matt Jackson
VW Life, the title says it all...you either get it or you don't. No air? No power? Works for me!
That's exactly right!
great showing , love the back story, something followed me home today, only had to drive 900 miles to get it,
Oooo! Insert obligatory "how's the baywindow double cab here" comment :) in all seriousness we're looking forward to see what you got!
What a wonderful story about Jerry the bus!
God that so42 is amazing love all the simple touches that were added.
Yep pretty cool.
a couple of awesome Buses Guys ! I love this channel but I always end up singing " I'm sorry Miss Jackson , I am for real " ....thanks to Gary :)
That's actually really common! Everyone is always singing that :)
Made me stoked that jerry the bus was the first split window bus I ever sat in ! Remember when we came over to the meet up in Cedar Park back in December 2015 then we bought our first bus two months later.... great memories!
Yep I have pictures of that day
Man alot of history with helga. Again awesome story. I'll have to check out the build on the samba
Check it out Eman!
I would love a magazine because I honestly miss VW Trends, I'm old school I like flipping through and looking at pictures instead of a phone
Nice buses reminds me of the 1960 flip seat westy I had my friend had a 62 door mobile westy good job keeping them alive thank you for your videos and the endless vw info
Right on that sounds awesome
Such beautiful vehicles
Really helps me with ideas for my newly old purchased bus
Loving you guy's video's. You are so-oooo lucky to live in a dry state. I live in South West UK, very damp & salty air so you can imagine the havoc caused to our old V Dubs.
Yep we are, we've seen a lot our vw's ship to the UK
This has to be my favorite video from this channel. Pretty awesome! 👏
Hey thanks Adrian!
What a beautifull bus!!!! Gary, I have a 65 Bus too, we call It as "Uncle Joe's Bus", as my uncle was the original owner. As an original Brazilian model, the engine is the 1200cc 36hp, with the small 28PCI carb.
Wow that's really cool! You're not going anywhere fast with that setup 😊
@@VWLifeVW you are absolutely right my friend, I'll slow and happy. I have time. Kkkkk
Despite the fact Jerry Garcia died in the 90s. Have you ever phoned the number on the paper just for kicks to see if it goes anywhere. 😄🤷
Beautiful vehicles! Wonderful.
Awesome! Watched this on my lunch break as soon as the notification came up! I actually really liked this one. So good to see you guys keeping these alive and loved!
that's awesome thanks Mikeey!
Saw yall pulling out of Top Notch last night my buddy from Carolina loves yall and has been telling me about these two busses. Had to send him some pictures.
Cool to know the back stories on your Jerry & Helga. Awesome that you guys hang out and wrench and live the VW Life.
That's what it's all about Bob! Thanks
Rally nice buses you have. Nice to hear the story about them. I would love to hear a little who you are too... Thanks for many great videos!
Peter Hörnberg from Sweden😊
yes we'll have to do that in another video, I think we'll get the others in the gang for a big sit down interview.
Loved hearing Gary giggle when it was Matt's turn to explain. Great video guys really enjoyed it
Lol his giggle...
Born and raised in redding ca I don’t have a bus yet but I have a 66 sedan daily driven for 10 years now love the videos
that's awesome! I'm taking the family up to redding in July, going to visit Wolfgang and hopefully shoot a video, going to see the redwoods.
VW Life that’s awesome maybe I could meet up with you a get a vw life sticker
So glad you guys finally showcased your busses. I love them both!
Thanks Gary, hope all is well.
VW Life things are well, just busy family life! Hope you all are doing well and staying well!
Enjoy hearing the history on your buses, one day need to do the same with my buses.
Yes you do, thanks!
Super cool buses! Both of you own a bit of history with Jerry the Bus and Helga!
indeed, pretty cool. thanks.
I have a 79' Bay..I bought it 2 years ago today actually! Unfortunately with a family, kids, bills, etc it hasn't been on the road because it needs brake work done and just some minor
thing & when it comes to money, my family ALWAYS comes first though before the bus. I hope to get in on the road this Summer though if I can! My dad was a huge car guy & he is older now in his 70's, so one of my goals is to get it finished & take him for a ride. Our bus is something I try to work on with my kids & will hopefully be passed down to them when I'm gone. Thanks for the chance!! I'd love some things to read & have my kids read them as well! We're all VW junkies in my family. lol You guys have some bad ass buses!!
Thank you for sharing guys! Love all the videos! Awesome 👏👍😊
Thanks for watching!
AWESOME buses, guys! I really enjoy the stories of your vintage buses. Both of your separate additions to each of your buses are really cool.
Thanks Julian really appreciate you saying that glad you enjoyed it
You should not have removed any G.D. stickers that were on Jerry. Its entirely likely it was at G.D. shows and hopefully entire tours. Any stickers applied since 1995 are not important, as J.G. has passed away at that time......... but ones before that date have special meaning...... they are the real deal. And they contribute greatly to the spirit of the bus.
A bus is far more than just a car......... its a collection of memories and they have a living spirit. My '66 EZ camper ( " Cloud " ) was named by its second owner in '68. She was dropping acid on a camping trip with it at Lassen National Park and was laying on her back on the ground beside the bus, just watching clouds drift by for hours.........hence , its name. The astounding stories she told me of its travels between '68 and about ''82 are mindblowing. Im its 3rd owner and of course, its still called cloud after I rescued it from her cabins field after It had sat with a bad transaxle for 17 years.
I had it running around amish countryside with no brakes within 2 weeks of the rescue.
These buses are young, they have a lot of pep in them, they are probably better than a new car, they are air cooled, the new cars are water. Cooled, Helga & Jerry are still.gping strong, plus you guys have two vehicles in one,, a camper, with all the commodities, plus a work bus, that serves as your presentation card,👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Well put thanks!
Thats a great patina match Matt, looks spot on
thanks!
Thank you guys I don't have a Volkswagen right now so you are my patch hopefully this summer
Find you one Paul!
Your videos are the only ones I like even before watching them!
They bring me so much joy and motivation to work on my own cars!
//Swedish Johan
glad to hear that Johan! hope the weather is nice in Sweden for you to work on your cars!
@@VWLifeVW Yes the weather is great actually!
I'm actually planning a 230 mile trip with my 1960 bug in two weeks!
@@johanvw1836 that's great! We hope you have a great adventure
Ha, i was just looking at my parts pile today and it has a cobra CB radio, and I wondered, do I need that ? Anyone who's been in a bus at 80F stopped in traffic knows they need safaris !! No, I have not yet ordered them...my 67 has a SOTO, Greatful Dead Truckin, on the outside, and a Jagermeister on the inside, on the Airbox, "Give Thanks & Praise" but my bus is Fast Eddy, the Sundial (tintop camper)...really like this post
Just getting into the VW scene, didn't know there was a magazine I'd like a copy!!! Love the buses!!! Can't wait to have one!
Cool deal!
Great episode guys, love meeting Jerry and Helga!!
Thanks JW!
What a awesome build on Helga! Yes a strong German woman!!! Such a awesome bus. One day I would like to bet a older bus, but having the 80 Vanagon as a daily is a never ending job! And not to mention the 72 beetle thats mint, and just needs to be driven! Thanks for another awesome vid!
sounds like you have your hands full! thanks :)
Love it!!! Always drove beetles in high school. From original to the fade of chopping the nose. Never had a bus but always wanted one. Not in the cards for me in the stage of life. Raising children and then their children so I guess you could say my grandchildren are my bus. Loads of fun watching you guys. By the way never owned a new one.
Thanks for the story twain! Sometimes life and family take precedent over our little hobby. We make videos like this for you. We know we are lucky and just want to share the vw love
Buses look good but the passion you guys have is amazing. Gary - ever since you took me on my first ride in your buses like 20 years ago it really made me want to get into VWs. I'm slowly working on getting up and running :-)
That's awesome!
Two of the coolest buses on the planet!
Thanks!
Hey thanks for sharing the background on those busses! They really are both fantastic and love how you have made them fit your personal preferences!
Thanks Marci! We gave you another shout out because you are awesome
@@VWLifeVW I heard it and thanks so much! I did same for you today on FB under the single wheel trailers page!
As someone from the UK I love the vintage American dealer plate frames. They seem to be gaining a lot in value too judging by the eBay prices. Two great buses with tons of character 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah they aren't cheap unless you can find them in the wild
'i'm falling in love with Helga &Jerry...nice to meet you...really both of these VW Van buses...are beautiful in their existence...Happy Travels wherever they may travel to...thankyou'#mj1*
awe thanks Margaret! :)
Awesome, now we need a video for the one that stayed inside the garage.
that one is named Ziggy, you can see a two part episode where we paint it, but yes we need to do an official tour of it. thanks!
Great guys..they have personalities of their own..
thanks! yes they are good ole buses :)
Thanks for the insight, often wondered about your buses.
Keep up the good work, you're the best VW channel on RUclips.
Well that's quite a compliment! Thanks
Every time I see you’re busses I want one so bad! A bus is on my list!!! Great vid as usual love the channel!
You need one!
VW Life you’re telling me! What are your guys thoughts on the Brazilian buses that I’ve seen being imported? Almost hard 2 beat the price! I have a lead on a 63 single cab I’ve got my fingers 🤞🤞🤞🤞 on if I’ll be able 2 pick it up when he’s ready 2 sell. I’ve wanted a single or double since I was little!
@@mileageunknown8910 that is great on the single cab! Seal the deal!. Our opinion on the Brazilian buses are they are a little walkie No Doubt. It's one of those things that if you can get one at a really good deal and you just want to have fun then get it. It just depends on what level of purest you are. If I couldn't find the bus that I have and there was a decent deal on a Brazilian I might jump on it
Always love to hear how you picked your vehicles names !
Sharing is caring
On helga you have that engine light.
I had on of those I hooked it up with a switch in one position it served as an engine light. In the second position it was hooked to the points and coil. So I could static time it.
Also if you drive with it in the second position, you get a cool disco effect. :)
Wow that's a really good idea! Lol
Very Nice guys
Thanks Barry!
Awesome. Love how you guys actually use your bus and not trailer queen or paved road only them.
Love the magazine. Never heard of it. If you send me one ill check it out!
Keep up the good videos.
Thanks vintage speed!
Great buses and love hearing the stories of both!
Thanks!
nice video! i have a '86 mk1 golf cabrio gti swapped and a '90 vanagon syncro i bough little over a year ago. in two months im shipping the bus over to iceland for a 3 week road trip, so im currently assembling my own tool bag for the trip :)
Cool! Nice vanagon
Cool rides guys!
Thanks madstiles!
You must be the coolest teacher at your school!
Pretty much 😎
Thank you for the bus tours! 💛💛
Thanks for watching!
Nice Buses guys!
Thanks Sean we're lucky
Enjoyed it! Have a 1971 Kombi w/full length camper roof custom made /London UK 80/ in garage.
Post a picture of it on our Facebook page! facebook.com/VWLifeVW/
Beautiful Buses! Love the added safety features on Helga, I sense a lot of good Karma in Jerry; maybe Jerry Garcia was in there in his life. Who knows...
He probably did 😉
Those are some great busses!!
Green shag carpet an a graffiti Party Deck!!
I need a double cab!!!
Thanks and me too!
Kool man, now I have to name our 66 kombi 🤔, great ideas guys ! Like the oil container!
Thanks Luis, pick a good time name
How do you rekey the locks and ignition? My bus didn’t come with any keys! And the side door and locked tight!
This is my favorite episode so far :')
So far😉
Those busses are awesome!!
The reason why I want that magazine is that I can learn something new about Volkswagens and that I can improve my english for school.
Thanks my friend!
back in the day in Seattle, a all VW parts/mach shop/ info diy hq called, "Bow Wow" on Beacon Hill was where you go for your total VW repair experience, it was the Mecca for those hipsters
Okay that's really cool because Jake, Gary son actually has a Bow wow sticker on his 66 bus
it was the thing to do; was to mount one decal on the other, "doggie style"
@@tomdale1313 ah okay lol
the orginal owner sold out in the late 60's, but i am sure that story is interesting, cause prior to the hippie attachment the vw was for those not so hip? lookin for value like today's Kia
Wonderful guys
Thanks!
Love your videos, thanks for sharing, seriously thinking about going down VW memory lane and buying one of these babies, love your orange menace.
You should look for one 😜
again guys...great video. Helga and Jerry are great busses. Maybe I missed the answer... to have a chance to win the '65 on the raffle, d people need to be at the octoberfest car show in TX??
yes must be present to win, tickets only sold the day of the show.
@@VWLifeVW ok....thanks.
Nice busses guys like how they got there names. My 74 camper is called pumpkin it came with the name from the previous owner. My ghia hasn't been named. I haven't seen the volks America mag yet
You should name your Ghia then 😉
@@VWLifeVW she hasn't earned a good name yet she is a little moody maybe PMS is a good name for it
@@airheadvw4479 PMS works, you could find an alternative meaning for the letters too
Thanks for the history. Great vid. Thanks guys
Glad you liked it!
Realice alrededor de 60 capturas de pantalla, de detalles que quiero copiar en mi Kombi 92Brasilera.... Excelente vídeo..... 🤜😃🇻🇪 Muchas gracias...
Matt, loved the bus tour. You pointed out about the paneling you used in your bus. What kind of paneling, how thick, and did you get it from a big box store? I think it turned out nice.
Weekly watcher from Utah
Hey glad to share! Actually they don't sell this kind of wood at the big box stores. This would you need to buy at a fine wood lumber store. It's 1/8 in Baltic Birch these that we get come in 5 by 5 sheets. So call around and see where you can find it but it won't be at the big box stores. It is very very bendy compared to anything you can find at the regular store which makes it much easier
@@VWLifeVW Thanks for the input. I didn't think I ever saw it at the big box stores. Only two days until another VW Life video.
@@therongill8199 and it's going to be a good one!
i love classic staffs both bus are amazing but i think if you paint it will looks better
Loved the VIDEO, you guys are great! I would love to meet you guys some time . Have a friend that lives in Arlington Tx. I live in Griffith,In we are planing on going to the SVRA vintage car race this fall in Austin Tx. Maybe we can meet up? Also thanks again for the the info on VolksAmerica Mag. it's a great Magazine i subscribed and bought a lot of Back issues. VW LIFE.
hell yeah Alan! #VWLIFE
Very nice buses
Thanks Tim!
I Love that Mag and we were in issue #11 Black and White 71 BayWindow Hightop
Gary, only 56 mph with a 1776 ? Dang, I have a 1600 and do 50 mph...I was hoping a bigger engine, would increase speed. Aaron of Wide Five, said he runs 70-75 in his mango... no way I can drive this to Florida for the bus show there when it resumes
G'day Kevin from Australia. I don't have a bus I have a 63 beetle Betsie. I love your buses there way cool only thing is the steering wheel it's on the wrong side. 🤗🤗
G'day mate! do you like Might Car Mods? i love those Aussies. Yeah we need to fix our steering wheels, must be a factory defect.
@@VWLifeVW yes love mighty car mods there nuts.
@@kevinhamling4675 I like fancy ourselves as a vw version of them
Oh Man! Now I want a bus! I love the character of them...
Matt, what was that "key" you used to get into Helga's engine area?
that's called a Church Key, they are used to open the rear engine deck lid and the gas door. I think they were used up until 1967. You keep it up in the front hanging on the front kick panel by the driver's door. also, yes get you a bus! :)
We will get there, eventually
Yep
Love a splitty one day and I think it’s proberly the only one I’m missing . 2 lovely vans :) is love a copy of Volks America cos I cannot get it in the uk :( anyway keep up the great channel
ah man :) thanks maybe they will expand to the UK one day.
VW Life I do have the first issue as Joy power the ex editor sent it to me personal cheers
Awesome video guys!👍😎👍
Thanks as always CT! Look forward to your next video...
Sweet buses! Nice graffiti skills Matt!
Thanks Mike!
One word "NICE"
ENJOY THE DAY
Thanks Mike
You are are youngster I've had mine since 73 still 73 no rust and in the UK and 500,000 miles on the clock....not on the same engine
Nice! Post a picture of it on our Facebook page! facebook.com/VWLifeVW/
Great video guys! What part of Texas are y'all in? I'm in El Paso and would love to cruise with y'all!
Austin! you know Moy Monster?
@@VWLifeVW I know of, but not personally. I just joined the EL BugO in El Paso group. I just ended a long dry spell of not owning a VW.
cool bus !!!
Thanks Jimmy!
Thanks for the intro's. A great video! Love the safari's and want to convert myself, but do they seal well and keep the draft in when it's cold?
they seal pretty good. a lot of it has to do with how well you isntall the windows and how they align with the frames. if it's really pouring though we tape them up
GROOVY!!!
Yeah baby! Groooovy baby
Too bad they weren't named Tom and Jerry lol. Good job guys they look great 👍
Right! 😉
Hi, how would I get a few of those cool VW Life stickers? Thanks, love your Chanel.

Thanks, Matt Jackson! I have been wanting a roof rack like the one you have. Now I have the info: Bullidriver.com. Excellent! Thanks.
Awesome tell him VW Life sent you!
As always, nice work!
1776 with a single little carburetor in Jerry?
I am interested in that.
More info, please
you just have to adjust you jetting to provide a little more volume, not sure what size. also run a vacuum advance dizzy.

Will do Bigw!
I would like the magazine because I can't find the Hot Vw's magazine in stores anymore!!!
Good answer :)
I had one of those trailers as well. We took it all over the US. Mine was extended to allow the engine hatch to open. Fantastic unless you needed to unhook it for some reason. photos.smugmug.com/Vehicles/1966-VW-WestfailaTigerbus/Tigerbus/i-cSChV9h/0/72b17f05/L/20100707-140133-L.jpg
Oh that's a great idea, Gary actually plans on modifying the arms. I'll show him this pic
How about y'all discuss Ziggy and the sweet anthracite bug?
that's a great idea!
You found some jerry garcia memorabilia in your van..... the question is....... did you find any hits of "acid" inside?
Lol
