I am curious as too which ones you found badly engineered? I had a French built Renault in the early nineties that drove good but a pain to work on with lots of strange torx fittings so special tools needed.

@@SladesVWBeetle Just a small question, I now have a slight fan rub now. I have taken it apart 3 times to fix it but it will not stop rubbing, is it ok to just let go like that? I stacked 4 shims on the back of the fan and its rubbing the back plate a little. Not horrendously though. Any help is appreciated.i figured it would just grind itself out, I am going to tear it down one more time tomorrow to see if I can fix.
Absolutely excellent detailed, informative, great pace, basic ground level fundamentals are critical. I just acquired a 1970 VW Beetle convertible. It’s having some issues with the alternator charging the battery. It is extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, dedication, effort, sharing your knowledge with others. I really appreciate your detailed explanations! We are in the process of converting to alternator with the engine in the car. My husband is a American car guy so all this is new to him and I can only change the oil so we need all the explaining we can get! We got the generator out, finally, after fighting the shroud and stand. Hopefully now the alternator will go in easier than the gen coming out. I wish you were our next door neighbor 😂😉

I watched your video and it was very helpful when I was installing my generator. I had the same issue on the other side - with the collar/spacer not fitting onto the generator shaft. Turns out the EMPI collar was too small - the generator was fine. I dug up an old OEM collar and it fit perfectly. The new EMPI shims are also about twice as thick as the OEM shims - so I only needed one on each side.

Another great video Slades. Every time I watch your videos I learn something new about beetles. I have two 36mm sockets lol one shallow one deep so hopefully that’s enough 😂. I don’t think I would have ever guessed what to do had I ran into the issue you did.
Oddly enough the 36 mm socket that I have, I’ve had it since I was 16 years old. Of course now that I said that something will happen to it. LOL, I just like to show what can go wrong when you’re doing these things and how to fix the issue.

i got a torque wrench like that from my dad as well. some of the younger watchers may not know dr mccoy. as for the slightly off diameter pulley shaft, i point out that the bearings seem to be super smooth.
I so appreciate the older tools my dad left behind, they bring back memories of helping him in the garage. And him saying...Hold the light where I can see!!! 😂 seems smooth, hopefully it lasts!
@@SladesVWBeetle i didn't work with dad in the garage much when i was small and when i got my 73 beetle as a teen i quickly realized that having dad in the garage was often counter productive.

I had to replace the fan on one of my engines doggie house. Got a Scat from local VW parts/service business. The one I got wobbled. Took it back and I showed them. They said, "oh, that's not enough to rub". Well I told them to keep it. They do not provide refunds! They give you credit! Sadly I do not do business with them anymore unless absolutely necessary. I hate ordering online... A bad part is a real hassle! Jim

I actually found a homemade wiring diagram that someone drew, in order to switch it over. I will be doing it on my 68, since it has a generator. I’ll try to make sure and film the process.
Installing a new alternator on a 1974 Super Beetle. Fan is rubbing so it looks like I will need extra washers. Where do you recommend getting the washers ? Thank you.
I have vw super beetle the engine is noise I adjusted valves they are set right. It sounds like it might be coming from the oil pump is that a possibility. Or maybe the cam gear? Thanks for posting all the videos they have helped me out for sure.
I have the same year beetle but my alternator has the three prong like you showed on your old one and I just bought a new alternator that looks like the new one that you bought. What can I do so that I don’t have to rig a whole bunch of different wiring so that it still runs
Actually you really won’t be pulling a bunch new wiring through. I only pulled two new wires through, because I wanted newer wiring. Most of that is done under the rear seat where you are changing things around.
It seems like every time I tighten the clamp or attach the belt the fan starts rubbing shroud!! It’s perfect no noises or anything. Until I tighten the clamp. Any suggestions
I have a new style alternator very similar to yours, but now mine has started showing charging voltage of 16v and at idle the idiot light is lightly flickering. I assume that the regulator is going bad, so the question is, can you easily replace it? I do not remember the manufacturer of the alternator. HELP!!!!!
The regulator definitely is not working properly. Be careful with that you don’t want to start a bigger issue than what you have. I have never taken apart at alternator like these. I’ve only restored the generators.

Hello there, Question when you put electric ignition do you need to ground the coil ? Because I have only the ground wire from the electric ignition to the coil I'm so confused I already burned two electric ignition
two wires from electronic ignition go to the two terminals on either side of your coil. One is positive and the other is negative. That's it.Wire colours vary according to manufacturer..Get it right or it burns out in a second.
Great video . Question? I have the same exact old three prong Bosch alternator that was on a 71 Super Beetle engine that I bought. Do you need a external regulator for the three prong or is it internal ? Thanks Mike Davisson
Actually with the three prong alternator there is still an external regulator under the backseat. It actually has a plug on it. I think I have one right now for sale on the samba classified so I would have to look at my ads. When the one wire alternator came in to play it was internally regulated.
I have got the one that was under the back seat of the Super Beetle motor I purchased . I just was not sure if maybe it was used for the original generator and bypassed. I now have it mounted on the Bosch alternator with the three prongs. I’m using the engine for a sandrail dune buggy. I have done some internal searching on how to wire it up. Any input on wiring it up feel free to suggest . Thanks for your reply and all your videos you share . 👏👍
@@mikedavisson2256 Thanks Mike I appreciate that. Yeah the regulator that was hooked up to my three prong alternator, had a plug on it. It was under the backseat. When I went over to the one wire alternator, I had to switch a lot of wiring around.
Great video!!!!! Sadly the saying is true 50 years ago the manual told you how to adjust brakes and valves and now everything is stupid proof and it tells you not to drink battery acid or get it on you!!!!!! Once again great video
Why in the heck didn't you paint the rest of it ? And I can't believe you turned down the shaft but didn't put tape over the inlet of the alternator, so those metal or grit from the emery cloth didn't go inside of it!
I sure wish you lived next to me if you did I would pay you to work on my 74 Super Beetle I'm not good when it comes to mechanics I'd pay you I can't find anybody to work on my Super Beetle it lives around near me Durango Colorado
Honestly if I lived near you, I wouldn’t even charge. I like to help others out. It is quite difficult to find people to work on these cars unfortunately. But I would post may be on some Facebook groups, beetle groups and see if anyone knows of any in your area.

Great tip on the shaft polishing. Good luck with the thermostat rod going through the head. Mine used up all the helpful four letter words I know.

The regulator definitely is not working properly. Be careful with that you don’t want to start a bigger issue than what you have. I have never taken apart at alternator like these. I’ve only restored the generators.

Question
when you put electric ignition do you need to ground the coil ?
Because I have only the ground wire from the electric ignition to the coil
I'm so confused I already burned two electric ignition
two wires from electronic ignition go to the two terminals on either side of your coil. One is positive and the other is negative. That's it.Wire colours vary according to manufacturer..Get it right or it burns out in a second.
Great video . Question? I have the same exact old three prong Bosch alternator that was on a 71 Super Beetle engine that I bought. Do you need a external regulator for the three prong or is it internal ? Thanks Mike Davisson
Actually with the three prong alternator there is still an external regulator under the backseat.
It actually has a plug on it.
I think I have one right now for sale on the samba classified so I would have to look at my ads.
When the one wire alternator came in to play it was internally regulated.
I have got the one that was under the back seat of the Super Beetle motor I purchased . I just was not sure if maybe it was used for the original generator and bypassed.
I now have it mounted on the Bosch alternator with the three prongs. I’m using the engine for a sandrail dune buggy. I have done some internal searching on how to wire it up. Any input on wiring it up feel free to suggest . Thanks for your reply and all your videos you share . 👏👍
@@mikedavisson2256 Thanks Mike I appreciate that. Yeah the regulator that was hooked up to my three prong alternator, had a plug on it. It was under the backseat. When I went over to the one wire alternator, I had to switch a lot of wiring around.

Also the keys and pulleys are they the same as on the generator ?

Why in the heck didn't you paint the rest of it ? And I can't believe you turned down the shaft but didn't put tape over the inlet of the alternator, so those metal or grit from the emery cloth didn't go inside of it!

I sure wish you lived next to me if you did I would pay you to work on my 74 Super Beetle I'm not good when it comes to mechanics I'd pay you I can't find anybody to work on my Super Beetle it lives around near me Durango Colorado
Honestly if I lived near you, I wouldn’t even charge. I like to help others out. It is quite difficult to find people to work on these cars unfortunately. But I would post may be on some Facebook groups, beetle groups and see if anyone knows of any in your area.
And your problems with that alternator shaft is why I started my channel. Poorly made parts.
Most parts are not made that great anymore unfortunately
