No. Simply remove the 36mm bolt from the fan behind the scroud and the alternator pulls right out. No need to disassemble all that stuff except what is connected to the alternator. The red wire on the alt is hot, so disconnect the battery ground first.
I was just saying to my wife an hour ago, “why can’t I just remove the 36mm bolt in the back and pull the alternator straight out?” Watching this video I thought to read a couple comments and low and behold!
Skipped the part where you wrestle with the fan assembly, especially if the thermostat linkage is all still connected. For anyone trying to do this in-car, expect to have to lift the fan, alternator, and fan shroud all in one. It's tight, but it will lift out as an assembly. Or remove the 36mm bolt from the fan from behind.
The video was ok got the same alternator setup but little detail about getting the carby n dizzy out of the way than getting the two bolts at the bottom would be great but in all its was very helpful ps in future just some photos of the wires so you dont get lost with the orange wire
Matt Young you're right. I did this install a day or two after I bought the car. This was a junk alternator which I also had to replace and I did it the way you're talking about. There's a video on that too

You didn't show the vent on the back of the alternator tin. Let people know that it points down. The alternator you fitted needs an external regulator with those three pins on top.
Thanks for the video man. Really helped out. Thank you for taking the time to film this and talk us through it. Thank you and God bless.
You need to remove the 36mm bolt behing the fan shroud and separate the alternator from the fan. Then the alternator can come out without any problem.

Bravo ,clean up wiring , conections should be clean and tight.
Carburetor is hitting the alternator. Has the correct stand. Not sure what the issue is
First thing if alternator isn’t charging is to check the warning light on the dash. If that isn’t working the alternator won’t charge.

you should be able to unbolt the fan from the alternator before you remove it, makes it easier to remove.

Poor old girl
Man!!! Why you cut the wiring of the alternator,, wow!!!
Sup man, do you know if the red wire to the alternator wire stays hot with the key off? I test mine with a test light and the test light comes on.
I found this video after I pulled my entire engine for this… 🤔
I wish this video was a tad bit more helpful I have a 74 and I’m doing everything myself!!
please move that gas fliter out the motor that's a dangerous spot to have since you have your distributor next to it 🔥

What is the size of the four bolts that hold it in
good video! but.. your replaced your internally regulated alternator with an externally regulated one..
Yes, that's right.
I spotted that too, and I'm new to VW's.
New carb/intake boots, before you have a fire
No engine taper.
