"Don't drop the washer" (Part 1)! LMAO! Been there - done that!! EXCELLENT instructional video. Thanx for not using loud cheesy "background music" like so many guys do!!
Dude I had a noise in my 73 super and it was this fan you saved me a load of time. Thank you so much!
So was it the shim,I had shop take bolt off and put on another generator
That Vw looks good. I like the presentation, a difficult job but you made it knowledgeable and doable.
tHIS gUY IS EXTREMELY GOOD AT SHOWING AND EXPLAINING! JUST WHAT I NEEDED - tHANKS!!!
Glad i could help.
Second.. For an older Volkswagen you gotta like that you can still get to most of the engine pieces without having to remove tons of other pieces.. Great Vid as usual..
I’m impressed, this was very well done.
Excellent help in this video! 1st time doing this kind of thing...so much more rewarding than dusting and washing dishes! Now if I can learn the art of body work....hahaha
Thanks for your video, it's extremely helpful and just what I needed.
The video i did on the the solenoid is different than the control module.I have replaced those modules and i just looked and to my surprise i can not find a video.
About the wave washer in the back of the alternator, it has truncated conical shape, and it has its own position in order to avoid be loosen by vibration. !!!!
the nut must touch the truncated part of the cone and that position the washer works as a loaded spring.
If it was me, I would have assembled the fan and spin it to see if it rubs, before finishing the job. Not a fan of doing things twice.
show a video replacing or repairing bearings or kit to an alternator. some bearing go bad in alt, makes large clunking noise... turns out is usually bearings.
thanks for the video! i recently acquired a 71 bus and the fan is so loose in the thing that the fan is spinning freely, i suspect that the squared off parts of the fan is completely rounded, just placed an order for a new fan and bolt/washer hardware set and some woodruff keys to hopefully address it :P
I took it out after the fix and it was indeed quiet.
Thanks. so helpful and clean cute car.
I used multipurpose grease.
You know your beetles, Thatherton. I tell you what.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
muy bueno me sirvio de mucho muchas gracias
Hi, very informative video, will come in handy, thanks. One question, can anyone confirm what make of alternator that is please.
I would think it would be a Bosch.
What kind of grease did you use?
In my area AutoZone has it for $150.
How about loosening the 2 shroud screws to lift it up a couple of inches and then removing the alt with fan attached?....or am I missing something? That way you wouldn't be working blind with the big nut, collar etc.
Good point. Did you try it? I need to change my dynamo stand out so don't want to mess with the fan if I don't need to.
How did you tighten the fan
Just a question. You use the same paint color for your Beetle as for your engine. Are you using heat-resistant paint for your engine?
You are correct i did use the same paint on the fan shroud and engine tin.The paint on the tin near the muffler did get affected a little by the heat.
Hi, both of your videos were excellent, thanks!! I think my bearing is shot as there is a loud rumbling noise when I rev the engine.
Once i took off the belt i could spin the alternator by hand then it was evident the bearings were bad.
Thanks, I'll try that!
Smashing :-)
And did you stick the tip of your tongue out while you were putting the sprung washer and nut back on.. ha ha, its the sign of a good engineer :-))
Bet its quiet now :-)
Do you know the reason why the Coil is always on a angle? I would like to rotate the coil a different way. Also is there better fans that are newer that work a lot better?
My take is the coil is mounted in this way to keep the wire to the distributor as short as possible. Not sure about the fan.
Those little bolts holding the fan cover plate on are a right PITA to get at on a stock 1300 single port. Even more impossible to put back on!
how much are these modules? and where are they located?
My fan is making a bad noise. Is this all I need to do?
Do you know how to fix the bolts from alternator to the shrouds
Is the taped holes in the shroud stripped.
And specific torque to the front 36mm nut for the fan?
The torque on the nut that holds on the fan is 40-47 ft-lb
That Orange looks like sunset Pearl sunset.
+Jason Fay Hugger orange is the most common name for this paint.
Really nice color
What way do I turn the big nut on the back of the fan? Can't get it off..
The nut is a right hand thread.
I just put new generator on 73 beetle, I've went down to one shim, when I put belt on I hear sound off nothing it must be that rubbing why now not before with other generator,
The fan will rub on the housing if the shims are not correct.
Doesn’t the fan have to be tighter that that, surely it will just spin loose eventually
I seen that you had placed some grease on the inner shim, to help with the rear fan nut/washer, could you not also just put a dab of grease on the washer to help keep it in place while you turn the 36 mm nut? would it do the same job to help it stick in place?
steve baker That large washer is not flat so i think grease would not work there.
Scrape maaaak!
normally it takes 2 of those spacer shims 0.80 clearance,
