when I was a kid, my dad had a 1968 Ford Country Squire wagon... the seats in the back flipped up and faced towards the sides of the car, like little benches and they didn't have seat belts... it was hotter back there, but it was nice to be away from the sisters and smacking range from dad "do you want me to stop the car!" ;)
This is a big problem I agree I have 4 kids and we go on a lot off trips we have a couple fix’s for u1. I have the darkest tint legal 2.super dark sunshade 3. A little cheap Walmart baterry powered fan. I’ll have to run some test and see what temperatures I get

The back gets so much sunlight you may be able to put the thermostat in the shade bc it's small but the children or pet Will be in direct sunlight I would suggest polarised windows to the max. And this car does need to circulate the air better or have a ac vent back there. I'm glad this was talked about and people are more aware. Maybe even sparks a few accessories to solve the problems
yeah Rich is a yankee, living in northeast US. Here in Texas it's still above 90F at midnight sometimes. Still a good test though - shows there's basically no airflow back there, so even in a cool climate it's gonna be hot (or cold, in a freezing climate) back there on a long drive...
now i know why 50s-70s luxury land yacht barges bound for texas and other " tropical climate package " have too a/c evaporators and fans with one in the trunk and under the dash and can be set to different temps
Here is the answer: Elon tweeted a while back what is up with the third-row seating in Model S. AC has to be set to take new air in NOT recirculation. There are exits at the rear bumper and if the AC is set to recirculation they are closed. In that case cold air would travel trough the third row. I know it's bad design because AC has to work very hard to cool down new hot air, but it should work. Try it to see how big of an impact is has.
According to the NWS, the correct way to read temperature is in the shade (even outdoor thermometers need to be housed in a shaded compartment). The 3rd row will definately be hotter than the front but the differential shouldn't be this big. I have the 3rd row in my car (with a tinted window)... I'll re-do this test when I have a chance.

bradley, this is just a poor design. You can see only the small opening near the top only for ventilation. The cold air that comes out of the front vents only falls towards the floor. There is no way for the heat that is building up back there to be removed without adequate ventilation.
yeeeeahhh..... i guess the tesla has back collision system to desacelerate at a lower speed.... and if you're goin at high speed there won't be anyone behind you with a higher speed than you, and you'll probably beat the front of the vehicle.
Hey Rich. Other factors with the dog in the back are, Were the seats all folded down (2nd n 3rd row)? What's the temp and air flow then? Also a lot of people especially in warmer states have ceramic window tint which cuts down heat in a car tremendously and even comes in clear so you wouldn't even see it if it was on a car. Ok that was just some other thoughts I had.

As a dude living in Florida I cannot imagine what it would be like to not have yours windows tinted. I currently rock 30% all around and I can't remember what I put on my windshield but its mild enough not to bother me at night, But I'd say there is easily a 15-20 degree difference. For most vehicles it'll cost you around $150-200 to have it done. Its so worth it. Makes you're cooling system more effective and makes your car look better to boot

Zeek Duff maybe the back was cold while driving it and he or she left the ac going the entire time. AC does a much better job of cooling down a car while it’s moving.
No Christopher, Rich proved definitely that rear area simply does NOT get anywhere near enough cooling to be safe, even while moving, and it wouldn't improve without additional aftermarket fans. There's no AC outlet vents back there, and the space between the seats and ceiling is too tight to allow any significant circulation, and don't forget, hot air rises, so any air going over the top of the rear seats would be much hotter than the front AC at lap-level. It's an unfortunate design flaw of this model.
The circulation doesn't change while moving or sitting still, and with warm bodies inside, it would be even less efficient. I thought he mentioned that, perhaps not. But, the max fan speed is max circulation, which simply can't change, regardless. It isn't like a gasoline/diesel powered vehicle where the fan speed might increase slightly with the engine alternator putting out more voltage to the fans. What you get is one maximum fan speed and that's what you've got in a Tesla, period.
I understand and may even agree with your logic, but where in the video was that proven? Where you MAY be wrong is if the vehicle uses some kind of ram-air effect to enhance the blowers, or there may be a vacuum effect on a rear opening that ‘draws’ internal air to the back. I have no idea, of course. The point is simply that I don’t feel this video proves that DOESN’T happen.
Rich get a seek thermal image cam for your phome. They are under $400 now and work amazing. I use mine for work and you would have a lot of use.for it in your videos. It shoots video and photo. These things were 20k 5 years ago.
If u add ceramic window tint (not regular tint or dark tint) ceramic window tint even the clear it will help prevent heat from getting in the car I put it on my semi truck even did the windshield and I noticed a large difference
I know my Subaru Outback has vents in the middle (rear) seats, but most people put their dogs in the back hatch and that makes me wonder how the airflow is with the Subaru Outback? One main difference is mine was stock with limo tinted rear passenger and hatch window. Front driver windows and windshield are anti-UV green coating in the glass. Not sure if all the glass is anti-uv coated in the rear also under that limo tinting? Might be interesting to find out.
Good test. I have the rear seats and am going to redo your test because I have a few factors which I don't think you accounted for... 1. My rear window is tinted 2. Did you check the direction of the rear vents. That makes a BIG difference for the rear seats. Don't get me wrong... you are 100% correct that it can remain quite hot back there but I think your results might be skewed even worse because of the two issues above.
Would a 3M window film on the back windows help? It blocks UV and infrared. It worked great on my vacation house in Florida for $150 a window, that had a hot enclosed back porch and no AC. It dropped temperatures 10 to 15 degrees. I used a 50% medium gray. Could a light shade of gray work back there and be legal in your state?
Marijuana is now legal in massachusetts, but god forbid you run a darker tint on a car window than they deem appropriate..... that would be an outrage. I heard that’s why Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge into the river. Tint was too heavy and he saw a cop make a u turn after passing him on the opposite side of the road.

Let me tell you another story: A traffic cop in the DC area admitted to me that the tint laws were to allow the spy cams to identify drivers. Its not for public safety, its for the feds to track everybody, he admitted.
There are automotive tints that contain metal to help reflect more infrared. I had it installed in the sunroof of my 01 Maxima that was Super Black with black leather interior. It definitely cut the heat coming from above. We didn't do the side windows with the same film and there was a definite difference. . . in cost as well.
Usually when people get the third row seating, the kids will complain, so the parents will get the rear window tinted quite heavily to alleviate the kids complaining and them overheating

The thermometer placements would be similar to heights of the riders who would be in sunlight. In many cars, if there isn't an AC register at that seat, then it doesn't get the airflow. We had a hatchback with large windows but no way to open windows while driving except for the driver and front passenger. It was miserable in the back seat. We thought the car chassis might work repurposed as a greenhouse for the heat it collected.
Did you try to point your vents towards the top of your car because cool air sinks below hot air if you had your fans pointed upwards the cooler air would reach further back using the hot air as a cushion effect retest you will see different results :)
Rich now has a new challenge, get pancake vents to the 3rd row and save the kids. Might be able salvage some vents in Canada, don't forget the passport...
I know what the proublem is . The middel seats are too high up so the AC cant get over the rear seats into the rear . You could make an retro fit make an tube and an fan that would suck the air from the frount to the rear for the car
Rich ,You need to do this again in winter to show how efficient Tesla Model S is at keeping your children warm in the 3rd seat during extreme cold weather.
Great video Rich,I carry a glass punch in all my vehicles just for this reason and had to use it just once for a dog.The dogs owner wanted me arrested but when the deputy told her she was going to jail with me for animal abuse/endangerment she changed her demands.Tesla or not,I will take my chances if the child or animal looks uncomfortable and the car is parked in the sun.Its not worth the risk,leave the animal home on hot days even on warm days its still dangerous and NEVER leave a child in a car unattended PERIOD!

Elon addressed this issue recently on Twitter. You have to make sure recirculation is OFF as that allows airflow to the rear of the car.

I know my Subaru Outback has vents in the middle (rear) seats, but most people put their dogs in the back hatch and that makes me wonder how the airflow is with the Subaru Outback? One main difference is mine was stock with limo tinted rear passenger and hatch window. Front driver windows and windshield are anti-UV green coating in the glass. Not sure if all the glass is anti-uv coated in the rear also under that limo tinting? Might be interesting to find out.
Good test. I have the rear seats and am going to redo your test because I have a few factors which I don't think you accounted for...
1. My rear window is tinted
2. Did you check the direction of the rear vents. That makes a BIG difference for the rear seats.
Don't get me wrong... you are 100% correct that it can remain quite hot back there but I think your results might be skewed even worse because of the two issues above.

Would a 3M window film on the back windows help? It blocks UV and infrared. It worked great on my vacation house in Florida for $150 a window, that had a hot enclosed back porch and no AC. It dropped temperatures 10 to 15 degrees. I used a 50% medium gray. Could a light shade of gray work back there and be legal in your state?
mondayfool The 3M ceramic film blocks UV A and B. It doesn't matter the % you get. It could be clear and still block the radiation.
Marijuana is now legal in massachusetts, but god forbid you run a darker tint on a car window than they deem appropriate..... that would be an outrage.

Let me tell you another story: A traffic cop in the DC area admitted to me that the tint laws were to allow the spy cams to identify drivers. Its not for public safety, its for the feds to track everybody, he admitted.
There are automotive tints that contain metal to help reflect more infrared. I had it installed in the sunroof of my 01 Maxima that was Super Black with black leather interior. It definitely cut the heat coming from above. We didn't do the side windows with the same film and there was a definite difference. . . in cost as well.
The manual and the sticker of the seat say to turn off air recirculation. I put my kids in the back of my S and noticed that made a big difference.
Only 2 degree difference when I tried
Usually when people get the third row seating, the kids will complain, so the parents will get the rear window tinted quite heavily to alleviate the kids complaining and them overheating

The thermometer placements would be similar to heights of the riders who would be in sunlight. In many cars, if there isn't an AC register at that seat, then it doesn't get the airflow. We had a hatchback with large windows but no way to open windows while driving except for the driver and front passenger. It was miserable in the back seat. We thought the car chassis might work repurposed as a greenhouse for the heat it collected.

Did you try to point your vents towards the top of your car because cool air sinks below hot air if you had your fans pointed upwards the cooler air would reach further back using the hot air as a cushion effect retest you will see different results :)
I vote for the wife do all voice overs from here forward.
Rich now has a new challenge, get pancake vents to the 3rd row and save the kids. Might be able salvage some vents in Canada, don't forget the passport...

I know what the proublem is . The middel seats are too high up so the AC cant get over the rear seats into the rear . You could make an retro fit make an tube and an fan that would suck the air from the frount to the rear for the car

Rich ,You need to do this again in winter to show how efficient Tesla Model S is at keeping your children warm in the 3rd seat during extreme cold weather.
Great video Rich,I carry a glass punch in all my vehicles just for this reason and had to use it just once for a dog.The dogs owner wanted me arrested but when the deputy told her she was going to jail with me for animal abuse/endangerment she changed her demands.Tesla or not,I will take my chances if the child or animal looks uncomfortable and the car is parked in the sun.Its not worth the risk,leave the animal home on hot days even on warm days its still dangerous and NEVER leave a child in a car unattended PERIOD!
