Upgrade the MCU you will not regret it. They may recall your screen for the memory chip if it has not already been replaced. The old screens get a yellow boarder that gets worse overtime. If the car has FSD they may upgrade it to the 3.0 hardware from your 2.5. I have almost the same model without air and glass roof, RWD tends to eat tires as I am finding out so keep them rotated to get 20 or 25k out of them. If you have winter weather or salty conditions service the brakes every year (remove rust and dirt from pads and lube contact surfaces). Tesla comes out with new things all the time, your car might have options that are no longer available that you want or don't want in my case so trading in for a newer one may not be worth it. I use the car connector that comes with the car on a 14-50 outlet and it works fine, you really do not need a wall charger.

@@TheTechMillennial Reason for that is because once you close the app, your car's connection to your phone gets completely cut off. If the app is running in the background, it's still using your Bluetooth, it's just in sleep mode. So your phone is still keeping the app running, just doesn't cut the connection. So as long as this app is open, your car will continually track your location.

you need to get MCU2, I have it on my 2014 p85 and it makes it feel like a brand new car.. it will affect your driving experience, because it is NOT just the chip.. they replace both your screens! the resolution is amazing.. the back up camera looks much better, the sound is better and you get all the new updates, first. Oh and yes, get a 240 box for your home. my old Tesla has "dual chargers" so it will charge at 22kw, instead of 11, but even then, it depends on how much you are pumping in. I only do 30 amps so I get 21 miles of charge per hour, which has always been just fine.. even on days where I drive a lot, if I am home for an hour, adding back 21 miles has made my day easier. so GET that MCU2 really! just think.. you got FSD for almost nothing.. make your car feel like new. btw, I have 105,000 miles on my car and I love all evs. and I will be keeping mine for as long as I can
It’s very tempting! I believe my S already has the higher resolution screen and backup camera already though. But eventually I think I’ll end up doing it for all the new features and better performance. Cheers 🥂
Tesla should be able to tell you is you have MCU2. If you have access to FM radio, you have MCU1. MCU2 will give you more visualizations in the driver display than MCU1.
I just bought a 2017 Tesla 75 like yours, 19,000 miles from a private party about 3 miles from my home in Naples, FL. I am picking up this Thursday morning. I have researched the S and knew that I wanted one but didn't want to spend $100,00. So I decided to try out the used car market. I am looking forward to going electric, even though I still have a few gas powered cars at home. Thanks for your likes and dislikes.
It is a very good point you made, that there are no pictures of the used cars on their website. You essentially buy "die Katze im Sack", not knowing if the price you see and the limited data on the car justifies the asking price. I wonder, does the website state the hardware specs; like which MCU is installed?
Only Tesla could get away with that because of their high demand. But I think overall they did a really great job of staying within their specified guidelines. Then don’t specify MCU because all Model S & X built after 2018 came with MCU 2. And all Model 3 and Y ever made have MCU 2 as well.
I love my Raven Model S Performance with FSD. Best car I ever owned. It’s a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, when I go from chill mode to Ludicrous. I hardly ever use ludicrous plus. It’s fast at ludicrous. Good video.
LOL about the pannel gaps, went to a mercedes dealer and on the floor was a GL wagon. The passenger side door gap was terrible from almost touching the bottom to wide at the top. The rear door was almost as bad but it made the entire side look like someone crashed it really hard. In the very rear the orange peel was so bad that I actually thought my first impression that this was a accident car that had been fixed. Nope a 2023. the salesperson seemed to blow over it saying that they would fix the issues.
Just an FYI, you can schedule to have your FSD computer upgraded to the latest hardware for no charge through the app. You also have the option to have the MCU unit upgraded as well though it is a $1500 charge(also schedulable through the app).
Your charging experience improves 10 fold after installing a 240v outlet in garage. If possible, go for a nema 14-50 outlet. My gen1 UMC cable delivers 29-30 miles per hr charging. I installed two, one for primary house and other for vacation home. Frequent supercharging is not good for battery so mix lots of slow charging with less frequent fast charging. Complete that move ASAP!
I can imagine what a huge difference it’s going to make not having to worry about plugging it in every single day! And you’re right about the damage supercharging could cause to the battery. Thanks!
Does it really? I’m not talking about being able to go into the Tesla app to unlock and start your car, I’m talking about what Tesla calls “Phone Key” which automatically unlocks your car when you walk up to it and your iPhone is in your pocket.
You should if you haven’t already ceramic coat the exterior and interior to help preserve the Tesla. Nice video. Am in the market for a either a model s or model y. Would like to start off on a low mile certified one, but have to research it more.
So welcome to the Tesla family and you may not be a fan boy yet but you will be! So I’ve had my Tesla Model 3 now for a little over 2 years & when took delivery it did have a few issues, but as you said, nothing that would have made it a dealbreaker & all of the issues were easily fixable & they were, so like you I don’t have a way to charge at home because I live in an apartment complex, so I charge my car exclusively using Tesla supercharger‘s! So when I first got the car the nearest Tesla supercharger was approximately 17 miles away in another state, however, since then Tesla has installed 2 additional superchargers near where I live & now the closest one is 5 miles away in my state! So I have the longe range battery pack & since I do not have a commute because I’m retired, I may need to charge the car a couple of times a week depending on my driving needs for that particular week, no real big deal at all! Of course with the adapter I have access to charging stations even closer than the Tesla superchargers, but because of the slow rate of charger, I almost never use them & some are free like at certain Whole Foods stores! So the way I see it if anyone comparing a Tesla to any other car is comparing apples to oranges, because there’s so many advantages to owning a Tesla & I’m hoping that they do a refresh on the Model 3 & offer the yoke steering wheel & air suspension as an option, that will make the deal real good & it’s something I will definitely can get excited about! So Elon if you’re listening, make it happen brother!
Quality issues have been sorted and here in Europe we are now getting TESLAs from China and they are very well made. I suggest getting some third party cosmetic work and paint protection done they will sort out any blemishes.
Really looking forward to your next video about the buying process from Tesla. I’m at the crossroads between a new 3 or Y vs a used S. I’m really particular about my vehicles condition and this has me leaning towards a new one. I’ve seen a lot of condition disparity between Tesla cpo cars when they used to show pics. This has me nervous going through the process without seeing the car. Looking forward to your thoughts and more vids.
@@TheTechMillennial the MCU1 that is replaced will eventually die again. The MCU2 gives you more processing power and utilize the sensors better thus improve your FSD. People were paying $2500 before the recall. So $1500 is a steal. Plus make sure they free upgrade you to HW3.
@@TheTechMillennial you can now view sentry clips in real time. No need to unplug the usb and find a computer to view it. It helps in sticky situation where you need to show officer the clip. (Pro tip, in such event also record the clip on your phone while playback in case the clip gets overwritten if you forgot yo save properly)
Best Model S video review. Since your car came with FSD, your Model S is qualified to get a computer upgrade to 3.0. Hardware 2.5 means you have 8 cameras. Upgrading the computer to handle FSD will make it 3.0
Congrats on the Tesla! I have a Model 3, and agree with many of the things you like about it. To be fair...pretty much all of the things that you don't like about your Tesla are because you bought a used model from 2017. All brand new Tesla Model S has the features you want and like. It's like buying an iPhone 7 off of eBay and complaining that it doesn't have the features of the iPhone 12. So that brings me to an interesting point that you alluded to. Yes, the car improves with age due to over-the-air software updates. But there is a hardware limitation for that software. You will eventually get to a point in time where your current hardware will not run the latest software, and you'll be left behind. Just like a smartphone...same concept. In fact, I tell people all the time that I treat my Tesla like I do my smartphone. I always charge my phone at night so I have a full charge for the next day. My Tesla is no different. It charges in my garage off the 240v Tesla wall charger while I'm asleep, and it's ready for me the next day (I drive about 110 miles roundtrip per day). My Model 3 is also White on White; the perfect combo...and yours looks great! Again...congratulations!
I completely understand and that’s why I’m not too upset because I know technology over time becomes outdated. I just wanted to put out the good AND the bad but like my conclusion states I don’t regret my purchase :) once I have the 240v installed everything will be great! Cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
Some of your complaints I would say are because you bought the older model, but as you said you can get the MCU2 update. I believe if you ask the service dept because you have FSD the 2.5 gets upgraded to 3.0 as part of that, at least it was reported by folks. Might check the Tesla Motors Club forum for how people got that done (free). I have a 2019 X with 2.5, but I didn't spring for FSD. Though I did order my 2021 Model S last week, so getting the refreshed version.
Man you went through the same thought process I did. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my 100D Model S. Have also been worried that it wouldn't have enough "umph", but glad to hear that's not an issue. Curious to see if you had the same problems I did with their buying process though.
Just realized you're also in Houston. So I'm *definitely* curious of your experience. I've been seeing (and experiencing) some negative things about the Houston - North Delivery Center in particular
You might want to consider the MCU 2 upgrade at some point sooner than later. I have a 2015 Model S and it got to the point of not updating anymore. Once upgraded from. MCU 1 to MCU 2, it started updating again. I only have AP1, but I found the update as a good update that makes the car feel fresh again. You car will leverage the MCU 2 and make the FDS better. I know... $1500 is a chunk of change, but I found it to be worth the money. Also, thanks for the great video!!
@@TheTechMillennial agreed! It’s nice for sure, but I would use what you have first and foremost. Make sure to fix the 8GB eMMC chip in the MCU1. It should be under warranty. Mine broke twice before the recall was issued. That will ensure that your system works. And if you decide to go for MCU2, then you’ll see the difference for sure. And if not, the car should remain functioning as intended.
Just upgrade my P85D to the MCU2. I can tell u it’s the best $1,500 I’ve ever spend....and I’m cheap. It’s worth the money. Everything is so responsive. Do it if you can swing for it.
@@TheTechMillennial yea not having to wait for things to boot up to drive and the map is buttery smooth is so worth it. The games or RUclips is just extra icing on top. I’ve had my 2015 for almost 2 years now so I guess it gets old for me to wait for the car to wake up. Also a side note that no other RUclips channel seems to talk about with the upgrade is the Tesla app on your phone sync so fast with your car now. Oh and the backup camera resolution somehow is much better. But maybe yours already have the better resolution camera since yours is a 2017.
Do you happen to have a 110v 20A plug in your garage? Google NEMA 5-20 and see how it looks. It can accept one of the prongs being horizontal. If you have that, you can get a $35 adapter from Tesla and that will allow you to charge ~33% faster. Your 30 miles would become ~40 then...although idk why you only get 30 miles over night, you must work late and leave early?
No I actually charge in my garage and it doesn’t have that. I guess it’s a little more than that sometimes if I charge for 10 hours. But sometimes I’m very busy or get up early to do things before work so it doesn’t get to charge that long.
@@TheTechMillennial Do you have a dryer nearby? Those use 240v. You can run an extension cord and attached the mobile charger to it. You might need and adapter as well.
@@ymcpa73 This is what I did. I swapped out my unused 30A 220v dryer receptacle for a NEMA 14-30 receptacle from Home Depot for $10. I then purchased a 220v adapter from a Tesla for $35. I spent a total of $45 in parts and 15 minutes of sweat equity and problem solved!
Bruh...this is some quality production. I highly recommend getting MCU 2 upgrade if you plan on keeping the car for a while but plan it out, you might just want to trade it in for a latest Tesla soon you never know lol
Still debating buying one. Prices are falling here in Europe but infrastructure not as good as US. Ill carry on with my jaguar for long distances and use the Model S for local journeys and charge from home
Moved yet? If not, maybe there's a 110v that can be upgraded to 20 amps? It'd be a new breaker and a new outlet and probably less than $100 including the additional pigtail for the mobile charger. Go NEMA 14-50 if you can. That charges our 2021 Model 3 at 34 mi/hr. The nearest supercharger is only 15 mi away if we're in a hurry, but that'd mean we just got back from a trip and needed to head out immediately.
I understand that you're frugal, but I feel like if you've spent so little on a MS compared to what a brand new one is going for today, that spending the 1500$ is a super great savings plus you already have the FSD which is apparently coming out with the beta in a few weeks if not next week. Having a responsive screen and a car that feels new is completely worth it and makes it an investment more than anything. I dont know your financial situation so it could be more than just frugality pushing your decisions but based on what others with older MS models have said in the comments, the 1500$ is well worth it for what it will do to enhance the driving experience even more.
It’s not so much about not being able to spend it for the upgrade, but more of the cost outweighing the value for me. I don’t feel I would really get $1,500 worth of value by upgrading for my specific needs. Don’t need many of the new features and yes the screen can be slow BUT once I’m driving I hardly interact with the screen. Not saying it’s not worth it, just not currently for me.
Congrats. But...............I will never let my car drive it'self. I can drive just fine. I prefer to be in control. And I prefer a key fob. Whats the big deal about that?
I definitely want to install a home charger first before I get a Tesla. Currently researching on some non-Tesla charger so I'll be able to charge different EV's than just Tesla (Future-Proof). Loved the review. I'm Still debating on getting a preowned or a new Model S.
75kWh not 75kW and that was not a good stipulation a 90kWh would have been a better choice. But for the money a 75kWh can be a very good value. It is a lovely car and still good for road trips as long as you take an "It's the journey" mindset and make good use of stop times instead of resenting stops. Great video.

Very good review! Had similar experience with what you had; Overall I love this car! Am struggling with changing to the MCU2 chip, because you lose AM radio - I listen to news and traffic reports - however, i can still stream from my iphone if I wanted to. Only thing that is really holding me back from the upgrade is shortly after I got my car, less than a month, only 30K miles on it - 2016 90D - i got a warning indicator that resulted in spending almost $2 K on a coolant heater repair! Not a money issue , but it took some wind out of my sails.. Dampened some enthusiasm. Anyone else out there that had this repair??
AMAZING car! I ended up getting MCU 2. You can opt to get the radio module also installed for an extra $500, so it comes out to $2,000 total. I thought about doing the upgrade without the radio for $1,500 but I also do use it a lot.
you can update the media control unit, i want to say like $2500? I mean weird complaint since u bought a used car that its of course not most up to date hardware
I own 2019 long range- the raven model! Almost 3.5 years past now with 60k+. The quality issues I have been experiencing are not so minor. Even with the extended warranty which kicked in June 2022, I had to spend about 2k due to $200 copays each visit. Tesla needs to learn how to build a car properly including basic mechanics. Coupled with glitchy electronics, I have been cheated. In NJ lemon law is good for 24k and 2 years. I had driven the car 24 k in a short time and problems started right after that. My last year and a half was almost a nightmare. I had to take uber for more than two months in total and the mental breakdown was immense. I contacted the consumer affairs but without lemon law protection, they could not or would not do anything. BTW, the front axle or half shafts as they call it have replaced twice. The car drove like I put the car together myself; such vibration. The front hubs- the click-clack sound was so embarrassing. The driver shock assembly, the front door handle- was opening by itself. They had to tape the door and tow to SC. The repeater camera on the passenger side replaced 7 times in 7 months. They tried to send me away by doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Finally they agreed to replace the media chip or whatever it is called. Still the camera does not work occasionally and I have to recalibrate them- a temp solution I found myself. Oh, they forgot to put the bolts back properly on the undercarriage protection when they replaced the front half shafts the first time and that plastic cover fell on highway at high speed making a lot of sound and smoke as it hit the road and partially melted until I stopped. They did not even say sorry- they still charged me the $200 copay to replace it. Bottom line: if you are ever thinking of buying one, know that you are rolling the dice. The quality control is not just limited to panel gaps or paint job etc. good luck!

@@TheTechMillennial This is also the same as the Model 3. It's all the same. It's phone tech limitations. If Elon designed this, it would be completely different. (Just clearing that part up lol)
Okay makes sense. Sounds like an iPhone limitation more than anything lol.
Nice vid, I accidentally click purchase on their preowned site as well last July. 2017 MS and by far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned
Lol nice! I don’t regret it one bit 😍

How does one buy a Tesla by accident...cuz I wanna make that same accident too... :)
Haha, it was more of an unexpected, impulse decision 😅

"I bought a Tesla Model S *unexpectedly!*"
Yep lol
Panel gaps doesn’t bother me anymore. The overall experience and ownership far outweighs your issues. Congratulations
Agreed. That was my final conclusion at the end of this video as well :) thanks and cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
you don't post much, but your production quality is 🔥🔥🔥 - how did you get so good?
Yo Shervin! What's up man. I recently saw your Apple Watch Ultra video and I'm going thru comments now and see you left this comment haha. Appreciate it man 💪🏽

I just realized where you filmed this. 😂 shout out to the splash pad stone gate area !
HAHA HEY!! 😂 small world.
you need to get MCU2, I have it on my 2014 p85 and it makes it feel like a brand new car.. it will affect your driving experience, because it is NOT just the chip.. they replace both your screens! the resolution is amazing.. the back up camera looks much better, the sound is better and you get all the new updates, first.
Is your Maintenance costs as low as they say teslas/evs are?
At 8:40: You can unlock and drive your Model S with your phone app without the key fob. I do it sometimes.
I’m referring to “Phone Key” which unlocks and starts your car without having to take your phone out of your pocket or use the app.
Awesome! You won’t regret it, I’m excited for you 😎 I love my S.
I like the choice of specs you went for.
Thanks! 😎
Beautifully produced video. Look forward to next Tesla details update.
Thanks! Any thing you want to see in particular?
00:44 (Gta San Andreas- nostalgia)
It is a very good point you made, that there are no pictures of the used cars on their website. You essentially buy "die Katze im Sack", not knowing if the price you see and the limited data on the car justifies the asking price.
I wonder, does the website state the hardware specs; like which MCU is installed?
Only Tesla could get away with that because of their high demand. But I think overall they did a really great job of staying within their specified guidelines.
Then don’t specify MCU because all Model S & X built after 2018 came with MCU 2. And all Model 3 and Y ever made have MCU 2 as well.
The upgraded infotainment is listed on the used inventory now.
Oh nice! Just checked it out and you’re right 👍🏽
I love my Raven Model S Performance with FSD. Best car I ever owned. It’s a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, when I go from chill mode to Ludicrous. I hardly ever use ludicrous plus. It’s fast at ludicrous. Good video.
Wow! That performance must be too much fun 😁 and thanks!
Might do the MCU upgrade it’s tempting!
At 8:40: Not correct. You can unlock and drive your Model S with your phone app without the key fob. I do it sometimes.
Thanks for helping me understand about Telsa. Very enjoyable video.
You need both MCU2 and HW3 to get Full Self Driving. You will get fewer and fewer software updates in the future if you don’t upgrade.
🤔 I will look into that.
Thanks!
Should notate that the refreshed 2021 Model S does have keyless entry like Model 3/Y.
Does it really? I’m not talking about being able to go into the Tesla app to unlock and start your car, I’m talking about what Tesla calls “Phone Key” which automatically unlocks your car when you walk up to it and your iPhone is in your pocket.
@@TheTechMillennial yeah the refreshed Model S has that capability.
Niiiiiiice, maybe I should go drop $90k on a brand new one just so I can have it! Lol
You should if you haven’t already ceramic coat the exterior and interior to help preserve the Tesla. Nice video. Am in the market for a either a model s or model y. Would like to start off on a low mile certified one, but have to research it more.
My 2020 model S does allow me to use the phone as a key. Although I have to log into the app. It's not automatic.
That is true. I’m referring to how the model 3 unlocks automatically with your phone in your pocket without having to take it out and go into the app
The negatives are definitely outweighed by the positives! I absolutely love this car. Cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
I can see why you’d be nervous. Hopefully my next video helps you!
Get the MCU2 upgrade. It makes everything so much better. Worth the $1500. Put your FSD features in line with model 3/Y.
What in particular changes for FSD? I read it adds some enhanced visualizations but couldn’t find what that meant.
Awesome work bro !! Loved it !!
Thank you brother!
Best Model S video review. Since your car came with FSD, your Model S is qualified to get a computer upgrade to 3.0. Hardware 2.5 means you have 8 cameras. Upgrading the computer to handle FSD will make it 3.0
Recently learned about that, thank you! 😎 and thanks for the support! ✊🏽
Cheers to the Tesla family 🥂
wanting to get my wife a model s im waiting for my cyber truck and i cant wait to see what thatll be like
Very nice! I’m thinking about a CT myself 👀
Yes I know, they were minor complaints that can mostly be resolved. I’m still happy regardless. I got the AP 3 already installed for feee 😎
You definitely won’t regret it! And stay tuned. 👍🏽
@@TheTechMillennial 🔥🔥🔥 I'm hyped, delivery day tomorrow!
Nice!! So soon already. I’m excited for you, I know you won’t regret it 👌🏽
@@TheTechMillennial Thanks bro!
All these comments keep tempting me to get it! I can imagine how great it is I’m just not sure if the cost justifies it. And thank you!
And if not, the car should remain functioning as intended.
if you have the FSD package than you should be able to upgrade from hardware 2.5 to 3 for free. Just schedule an appointment from the Tesla app.
Yes recently found that out, thanks 👍🏽
Tesla Model S is my dream Tesla😍 It looks absolutely amazing
One day! 🤞🏽
@@TheTechMillennial Manifesting it🤞🏻
Just upgrade my P85D to the MCU2. I can tell u it’s the best $1,500 I’ve ever spend....and I’m cheap. It’s worth the money. Everything is so responsive. Do it if you can swing for it.
Is it really? I just can’t imagine that a more responsive UI and a few more features are worth $1,500. I’m also very frugal too lol!
@@TheTechMillennial the MCU2 also improve greatly your FSD feature. More processing power. Also ask them to fit HW3 for you.
Thank you! ✊🏽 and you’re right 👀 might get a slightly used Model S refresh in a 2 years 🤔
@@TheTechMillennial keep an eye on what’s going with the latest Tesla MCU recall on older models 😈
Yep! They emailed me already lol. But it’s not a MCU recall just a component.
Still debating buying one. Prices are falling here in Europe but infrastructure not as good as US. Ill carry on with my jaguar for long distances and use the Model S for local journeys and charge from home
If $100k is nothing, I would buy one in cash. If I have to finance, no I would not at 6+%.
Wish I could afford one. the upkeep on a car like this is probably insane. Definitely want to get off gas and go full electric.
Came to your Videos bye suggestions and loved it...kudos!
really well made video man 👌 keep it coming
Thank you 👍🏽
Good , honest review. Thankyou
I like the production value of this video
Thank you!
Nice info thanks!! Congrats 🎉
the white paint can make those panel gaps pop. thats why i opted for the gray paint
When is part 2 out??
When is the 2nd video coming? Very much looking forward to it.
Thanks for the support! Working on it as we speak. Will do my best to get out by this upcoming week 👌🏽
I hope that one day I also will be able to impulse buy a Tesa Model 3 just to switch my mind and get a more expensive car, the Model S.
Lol! Well when you put it that way... 😅

Congrats. But...............I will never let my car drive it'self. I can drive just fine. I prefer to be in control. And I prefer a key fob. Whats the big deal about that?
Nothing wrong with that 🤷🏽♂️ and I just wanted the convenience.
I definitely want to install a home charger first before I get a Tesla. Currently researching on some non-Tesla charger so I'll be able to charge different EV's than just Tesla (Future-Proof). Loved the review. I'm Still debating on getting a preowned or a new Model S.
Just have an electrician install a 240v in your garage and you’ll be good 👍🏽 get a preowned one for sure, you save a lot of money 😅
I think since your vehicle has FSD you can ask for an upgrade to V3 hardware.
You are right, learned this after. Thanks!
Great video, but I could not find the link to the to the purchase video. Can you attach the link?

No accident. Intentionally, impulsively logged into Tesla's site and pushed the "place order" button. :-)
I can neither confirm nor deny that 😎
you can update the media control unit, i want to say like $2500?
The quality control is not just limited to panel gaps or paint job etc. good luck!
