Kicking a tire while you keep your hands in your pockets is mandatory for buying a used car. No need for any other checking then that!
In other words, stay away from a used Telsa. Geez what a basket case..

I'm a Tesla "fan boy" and I completely appreciate what you do Rich. People like you hold companies and politicians that we like to a standard and point out when they're not doing what they are supposed to do and what they need to do to be better, putting it out in the publics eye to keep them honest. I am amazed by the comments, has noone ever bought a used car before. Every car make has a list of faults as long as your arm to check for and I have always looked these up before looking at any used car to buy - and I am old. This is a video about Tesla covering mostly 2 models. Yep it has faults, so does every other car, thank you Rich for providing us with details on this car.
I so appreciate your realistic view of Tesla. I own and an a fan but I'm also not fanboy blind. It is refreshing to see constructive criticism as no product or company is perfect.
Side note it was great to see you at FCL. I hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as the vast majority of attendees did. See you there next year?
Agree. The Fanboy element of Tesla is to me the worst thing about it. Finding accurate information on these cars is like unearthing some Illuminati conspiracy. Finding someone who presents these cars as CARS and not magical unicorns is a breath of fresh air.
@@hamsterminator Have you checked out Tesla Motors Club? Owner's share an insane amount of info on these cars, this includes all the bad too.

I picked up a 2014 Tesla 85 RWD in 2021 from a used car dealer with 54,003 miles with a clean carfax, the tech package, the auto suspension and a panoramic sunroof for $29,200. Had it shipped from near Chicago for $1,450 and after all the fees and California taxes the out the door grand total price was $32,250 and I love it. The new car retail price was over $92,000 so I only paid about a third of the new car price. Supposedly the battery should last between 300,000 and 500,000 miles so if I can get anywhere near 300,000 for around $32,000 I'll be thrilled and when the battery does die I'll just get new one for around $20,000 and it will be almost like having a new Tesla since all model S's from 2013 to 2022 look very similar inside and out.
Great info...any feedback now in Oct '23 after owning it for over a year?
@@jangbaar5246 Sure. I sold my 2014 in Jan 2023 and upgraded to a 2018 100D for the longer range with enhanced auto pilot. I lucked out a little I think because 5 months after I sold it the person I sold it to told me it needed a new battery after a little over 100,000 miles. Said he wanted me to pay for half of the $14,000 bill but I sold it with no warrantee so it was his bill to pay. Just sold my 100d last week and upgraded to a black 2018 P100D with full self driving and the MCU2. My 100d had the MCU1. I got a steal on my P100D. The retail new price in 2018 was $135,000 plus $15,000 for FSD beta and $4,500 for 21 inch rims but I only paid $42,520 and it's only got 55,900 miles on it. I sold my 100D for $35,000 so I only would up paying about $8,000 for the P100D but it would have cost me $10K to upgrade to FSD, $2,400 to get the MCU2, $6,000 for the performance upgrade and $10k to add ludicrous so I got nearly $30,000 in upgrades for around $8,000.
There’s one near me with 16K miles for 30K. mint condition, but I heard the battery degrades even without being driven. The battery is nearing 10 years old. I want to get them under 25K to qualify for the used EV credit, would be steal of the century.
@@jesuitscholar2022 I'd be a little leery of a 10-year-old battery because you're right, the battery does degrade with age. Most experts say don't get anything older that a 2018 model.

@@sunsetlights100 that panel is probably perforated. Pretty bad for a modern car.
Note - you only get that on the steel Model 3. The Model X and Model S use aluminum rails.
@@timcartwright4679 That's the main structural element of the car - nothing mud flaps wouldn't mitigate because most of that is from the front tires slinging sharp gravel, sand, and salt at an exposed (it's just primed and painted AFAIK) rocker rail. This video is really well done, and more importantly lacks the bullshit clichés that accompany videos from channels with a ton of subscribers. I am a subscriber. 👍🏼
I am glad that you mentioned that Lower mileage cars may have issues. The cool thing about a higher mileage fairly newer model is that a lot has probably already been replaced under warranty. My screens are new because of bubbles new entire sunroof because of a rubber trim that was unsightly. Battery cooling heating fans etc etc. all replaced at 96,000 miles my car is like new. You would want all that to happen out of warranty.
You wouldn't like that to happen at all on a car that costs like a real car

I just test drove a 2013 P85+ yesterday. Discontinued Silver, tech/performance/sound packages. Refurbished battery installed 3,000 miles ago, new tires 5,000 miles ago, only 1 door handle ever broke/replaced, all points this video showed inspected and were great. Think I'm throwing down an offer on it today. Super excited!
Also, any suggestions for 3rd party EV shops in Orange County, CA?

Rich:. "Nobody wants a Chevy Bolt"
Bolt Owner: Slow your roll there

Hey, Rich. I love your videos. You motivate me to watch for a used model S in Europe. Keep it up.
Love your videos and your personality, Rich. Subscribing right NOW. I have to tell you, though, I bought my used Model 3 from Tesla used inventory in mid March, 2022 and I was nervous about not being able to see actual photos. It was still a lot of money, but equipped SWEET with everything I wanted. AWD, long range, accel boost and full FSD. I have to tell you man, the vehicle, with over 50k miles on it, exceeded my expectations in every possible way. ZERO cosmetic issues. Paint looked beautiful. No dings, scratches. Nothing. New tires, no wheel rash, and the white interior was perfect. One thing you didn't mention is that when you buy used from Tesla, they tack on an extra full year of the basic warranty, even if the vehicle is past the 50k mi threshold. I put this to use when I found a strange defect in one of the rear inner door panels which was only visible when the door was open. I also had them replace the check strap on the driver's door, because mine was getting noisy. They replaced the entire door panel and check strap free of charge. Three months later, and this car is still perfect and Tesla service has been good. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
How’s the car

Is it just me, or is this alarming for these cars all being under 5-10 years old? All cars have problems but a lot of these issues point to poor quality.
Tesla fanboys (meaning people who can afford a new car every three years) do not know anything about used cars, so for them this is not an issue (they also think that hence it's not an issue for any other person).

Don't forget that if you scroll through the photos of the cars on the Tesla site, most listings will have actual images of the car for sale after you get through the rendered images. They typically highlight any dents or dings. The extended warranty that they offer with refurbished cars also gives a lot of peace of mind.

Just replaced a door handle gear and the AGM battery. Really hoping I don't get all of these other problems. You're frightening me rich.
Working on my Tesla has been a pain in the ass.
Why do Tesla use a12V AGM battery? LiFePO4 are cheap and don’t degrade from storage.
@@davidelliott5843 probably to run the normal car electronics like window motors and wipers.
@@justcommenting4981 A LiFePO4 would work the exact same for that, its still a 12v battery
@@felkmane why would you use another lithium battery to run what a cheaper battery can, that won't require additional engineering for all those common components? The Tesla battery is not 12v, so all those components would either need to be specifically engineered to work with the main battery.
Why would any manufacturer use a lithium battery when a cheaper alternative is available and requires less engineering? Obviously the answer is they wouldn't because they didn't. There is literally not enough lithium on earth to replace American cars with electric based on current usage.

This is going to be useful information for the people who can afford a Tesla
Great info. Thank you. This might be a silly question but is there any way to know if a Model S is able to accept supercharging? I saw a few videos about some buyers that bought third party and the car did not accept supercharging. Also is there any to know if free supercharging is included with that vehicle.
So I called Tesla yesterday and asked the same question about the supercharging and they said with certain vehicles it just comes with the car -- like if you plugged it in, the supercharge will just accept "Oh this is a model with free supercharge attached". For other models, as long as it hasnt gone through a Tesla dealer -- i.e. if you bought it from a person OR from auction where it was in another person's name, it would also still have free supercharge attached.
You do the best in-place ads. Hands down!

@@novasentia2307 really? Did you ever bought a used car with a pool or rain water in the trunk? Hi there
I like watching your channel in spite of not owning a Tesla yet. By the end of this year I’ll have my Model X (hopefully).
I was hoping to also help your channel with some advice. I’m a retired documentary maker, media teacher and photographer in Australia. May I strongly suggest two things to greatly improve the watch ability and flow of your channel. Firstly, please invest in a camera that has proper microphone inputs. Good cameras usually have two inputs. May I suggest you mic yourself up on channel 1 and have a hand held boom mic on channel 2. Use the boom mic in a low position to pick up the audio of those you talk to. Audio is critical for audience engagement, even more than image. Speaking of which, either switch off your cameras auto focus, as too many of your shots are out of focus. Or, make sure you know where in your frame your camera uses as the focal point. Many cameras have adjustments in this area and you may need to do some work on finding out how to get the focus to work harder and faster for you. You may need to change or instruct your ‘talent’ how to hold things to get the focus. Or you could always use cut always to show what you are talking about.
Thanks for listening and I hope you are aided by what I suggest.
Regards
Stephen.
Stephen Woods great advice but riches channel has grown very fast in the last two years i dont think he needs your advice

Can we charger the car with a extension cable
That depends on the extension cable. But yes especially because tesla allows you to adjust the amperage you are pulling. So check the rating of the extension cable then set it to a little below that in the car and you will be good to go.
On the other hand if you want to see your extension cable burst into flames set the amperage to twice its rating and wait an hour or two. The insulation will melt away. The cable will short circuit and you will be able to roast marshmallows with a lovely plastic smell.
Click on the left, right arrows on the used vehicle image to see photos most of the time. It was only in the past that you couldn't see photos without asking.
