    "Dragon quest 3 hd 2d was announced and then the company went radio silent."
    For those without experience of the DQ team, this is VERY NORMAL. They often announce new games coming and then disappear for multiple years until theyre much closer to release than not.
    They announced DQ12 a few years ago at this point and the game hasn't been seen, teased, or even mentioned anywhere. And we will not hear about it again until were likely 6-8 months before its release.

      Honestly I like that method. Sometimes if a game’s development takes forever, and they try to keep the hype going the whole time, I tend to feel burnt out before it’s even out. Or leads to high of expectations that inevitably fall short.

      It was originally supposed to be a simple remake of Dragon Quest 3 as if you just grabbed the SNES version and pressed a magic button that turned it into HD 2D style. So the 3 years of silence was very strange even considering they have decided to make the entire trilogy - they were very simple games and didn't seem like something that would take them more than a year and a half to make. It was only when they finally released a new trailer that we understood why it took them so long.

    • @pokelib
      @pokelib Месяц назад +7

      The art of Chrono Trigger is the culmination of many artists at the time of its graphics, and the art style is a byproduct that was born naturally. Please don't remake a classic game and put the name 2DHD behind it, as it cheapens the artistic product of the artists. Only the business-minded heads of Square Enix would think of something like that. Regarding Chrono Trigger, I believe that its artists and director would not want their creation to be remade in such a soulless way, let alone accept that industrial 2DHD style.

    While I do understand your "complaint" (I didn't actually read it as a complaint for the record) that it may be a little too simple by the standards of modern RPG's, I actually think that's one of Dragon Quest's strengths. It's not here to confuse you with some big new system, it's no longer trying to break the mold or anything like that. It's a series that has already made a name for itself, it has nothing left to prove. So instead they're content with making a fun, ol' reliable RPG for all ages. They'll still try some new stuff out, sure, but the developers and the series is comfortable in their own lane.

    " there's a bad guy. Go get him."
    I mean even up to more recent Dragon Quest games, isn't that still the story? I'm pretty sure even Dragon Quest 11 did not really have a whole lot of character development for the main character. Although everybody loves Sylvando . And if you don't love him, I don't want to talk to you

    • @SpoonyBard88
      @SpoonyBard88 Месяц назад +8

      The main character is really a cipher in DQ11. And the other characters have arcs of development, Sylvando included. Most of the characters have very different outlooks on the world from the when you meet then than at the battle with Mordegon. A lot of that has to do with how incredibly ballsy the plot is from a Dragon Quest game before that climax happens. IYKYK.

    I love the level of detail in the overworld map. Instead of the generic icons from earlier games, towns and towers now look unique and correctly detailed in the overworld. And moreover, it matters which side you approach a town from. If you enter from the north, for example, you will be in the north side of the town when the screen changes to the in-town view.

If being mindful of relativity was truly what you cared about, truthfully I think you'd largely agree with my statement- which is to ask that the review be more mindful of their subjective take on this point.
      I do indeed find it disingenuous for them to largely say that the only substance is "go find and stop bad guy" when there is, very notably, a lot more to the game narratively than what they are implying. I don't care if they don't agree with my perspective, but rather that their criticism is from *their perspective* rather than a sweeping statement implying a thin objectivity to the topic.
      Depth *is* relative, that's why I ask they be more mindful about what their relative stance is compared to the actual content and context provided. I think this is a really great review all around, but I don't think it's unfair of me to make this one single criticism about it.

      I would recommend it, but with an asterisk with that recommendation, since unlike 11, 3 is minimalistic in alot of ways, the same battle system it has had since 1988, minimalistic story, a silent party, and a really simple class system. Even if there are alot of quality of life improvements like multiple difficulties and quest logs to help make it more accessible, it wouldn't hurt to wait for a price drop.
      However I would describe 3 to basically be a DnD style adventure, which makes it arguably the most replayable game in the series, so if that sounds fun, I'd say go for it (3 is my personal fav in the series).

    These earlier DQ titles were not meant to have 2D or 3D protagonists or antagonists. The story doesn't need to be more than "Villain bad, save the world." There are some twists along the way, and the stories start developing more depth as early as DQ4, but the reason these first three games are fun is because the game play is fun. They need to be difficult and have a lot of replayability. The fun of DQ3 is trying out all the classes, exploring the world and dungeons, collecting and optimizing gear, and yes, even some grinding. Not all RPGs have to be beautiful expressions of humanities struggles. Some can just be "Dude, this sword has +30 and I just got the third ice spell. Time to clear that dungeon and get the best armor!"

    For my own personal take? I can do the opposite of what this game did and not waste everyone's time by summing up my review in one word: Tedious.
    At the time, DQ3 was innovative and new and a vast upgrade over the first two games. But that was in the 1980s when JRPGs were in their infancy. I'm honestly shocked that by the time Final Fantasy IV came out it that Square didn't bury Enix right then and there along with the DQ franchise. (I can only assume Toriyama had a lot of staying power because "Dragonball" was at the height of its popularity at the time.) Whereas the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters sought to iron out and smooth over all of the bad parts of their NES/Famicom entries, this one preserves them in a bout of misplaced nostalgia. Even with what improvement were put in, the game still manages to be a never-ending slog.
    The difficulty is, for me, the worst kind for the NES/Famicom. There were lots of difficult games back then, but many of them were still loved because they were tough but fair. So you felt like you COULD win if you kept going onward. The DQ series, on the other hand, including this game, not only forces the player to endlessly grind but likes throwing in stuff like randomly-leveled Shade enemies to randomly force you to lose a half hour to an hour of progress---forcing the game to be even more tedious by making the player overly cautious about continually backtracking to save. (Although this version DID include an Autosave, so I have to credit that.) Add to the fact that all enemies eventually get multiple attacks per round while your characters never do without taking a turn to use a certain power up, and the fact that your own party is always considered "1 group" so that enemies can pile on status effects and then curbstomp you en masse while your spells are forced to pick out targets one at a time, and you'll soon be leaving "Dracky Quest" on just to escape some level of tedium and try to speed things up.
    There's a few fun bits to be had here and there, and it's colorful and charming enough in presentation at least, but it's not nearly enough to compensate for the mind-numbing gameplay. 30 years ago I may have had the time to spend three or four hours leveling just to get to the next spot where I would spend another three or four hours leveling to get to the spot after that, but I'm older now and I hate the sensation of how much of my life is being thrown away trying to beat this game. It got to the point where I started skipping the cutscenes and dialog JUST so I could get the game to end a little faster. But, I guess if you have more time than you know what to do with and you don't feel like, you know, spending it socializing or stepping outside or going to work or playing a less grind-heavy JRPG or doing literally anything else besides playing this game, go for it.

I’m enjoying it, but it’s definitely is a relic of the past. You can just feel the simplicity of it. I keep hoping for something “more” to it but it’s just not there. It would have be better to make a whole new game in this hd 2d style than remake this. You can do so much more with a new game. Dq3 is a very very surface level game so far
