Love the analysis of them. I've held off playing 3, waiting for this remake and I love the vocations. I think they did a great job of giving all of them something that makes them useful, even if it's out of combat. My favourites at the moment are priest and merchant!
Worth pointing out with the Thief that there are a few monsters that do react to sight, so Snoop doesn't work, but Invisibility does for them. I noticed a few after I started the Orb hunting quest.
Thanks so much for this! I only ever played the NES version, so I’m looking forward to playing the two new-to-me classes. I almost always ran a fighter at the start and turned him into a sage for a super character. I ran a joker / gadabout to level 20 and made him a sage too. It was shocking how much of a stat difference they had. Running a gadabout to a sage isn’t really worth it except for the memes in my experience
I watch your videos for rpg games it gave me a push to buy dragon quest 3 remake i enjoy it alot its just a chill game so i went ahead and bought dragon quest 11 until they release dragon quest 12 thanks for your videos keep up the good work you got a sub out of me thank you david
While part of me was sad to see thieves no longer being absolute powerhouses because of agility being factored into defense in the older versions, it was good for balancing. I also liked that luck got added to the crit% formula. New class-specific equipment actually made the merchant quite good. I kept one around until level 37, and he was quite good in battle. I'm also rolling in dough right now in part thanks to him finding extra gold so frequently after battles (over 130,000 gold, and I'm not even at Baramos yet).
I'd argue Mages have been buffed to an extent here since leveling up also refills MP. Perhaps not good enough to raise them, but they are better than they were on GBC/SNES counterparts at least. I'm also still surprised Thief and Monster Wrangler got so low; the former is also a tank as well as a speedster. Funny thing about Dragon Quests is that speedsters also are surprisingly tanky since they have high base defense without armor. Also, Monster Wrangler has special utility at controlling monsters and recruiting friendly monsters. Which does become crazy useful, which I'd argue are better than the warrior. But top 3 are still Sage, Hero, and Martial Artist.
Ultimately, the best classes for casuals are thief and monster wrangler. These allow you to find the treasures and monsters as you play the game and both are very strong in the early game. Odds are the 3rd character for beginners should be a cleric that focuses on healing. Swapping classes will actually make the game slightly harder without grinding, but this allows for the opportunity to swap cleric to sage if desired. If I made a tier list, I'd probably go with 1. Cleric, 2. Thief, 3. Monster Wrangler, 4. Sage. 5: The Rest, 6: Gadabout
"Whips and Boomerangs make the mage worse" Mage spells don't have falloff as they progress through the enemies from left to right, and the availability is really low. Not only that, but the power of spells being relatively fixed means that they'll punch harder than boomerangs or whips for their relative acquisition point.
If there's one merit that Gadabouts have, it's that their Luck stat is SPECTACULAR. Given that (according to the in-game hints) Luck helps base your overall damage, chance to Crit, and ability to dodge bad statuses, having high Luck pass down to whatever a Gadabout will become is a nice thing to have. That said, the class should only be picked if you want a challenge early on (and I'm using one now since this is the upteenth time I've played this game, and I wanted to try something different this time around).
Although I enjoy games with set job classes for each character a bit more, I still love the job system in games that have it. It adds so many options and makes each play through different.
Monster Wrangler surprised me in a great way and imo you are underrating it. Gets one of the best new buffs in the game with Wild Side and Monster Pile-On scales with the amount of monsters you recruit. Very easy 1k damage per round once you get to the bosses that matter and even if you hate MW, you can change to one of other classes and pop off with Wild Side.
Definitely planning a 2 Sage/2 Melee (hero and debating the other). Said melee non-hero started as a Priest so I can have emergency healing on all four characters.
I rarely think job class customization adds to a game. Sometimes it really works, but I usually prefer more defined characters. I wouldn't want to make Cecil Harvey a monk or a blue mage. His class is tied to his identity and character arc, and that's the type of storytelling I prefer. But, again, there are some games that do benefit from it. I also don't tend to replay a lot of games, so I can recognize that raises the value for others.
I agree, and excellent reference btw. (Love FF4l HOWEVER, keep in mind this was 1988. This kind of customization for a home console rpg and these gameplay mechanics were mind blowing at that time... DQ eventually leaned into your sentiment with the very next game as DQ4 has actual developed party members with their own stories and a defined role/class, but 3 really paved the way for not only this series, but a lot of jrpgs that came after. People that felt the way you did was the only concern I had with this game adapting to modern times. Most players these days want more story driven games with characters whose backgrounds/motivations they can learn, but this was before that time. I actually think DQ4 would have been the better game to remake in this style, but I understand the original trilogy NEEDED to be touched up more than the others
i likd what FFX did. Kind of had set roles for your charcaters initially but deeper into the game allowed you to learn skills and stats from other characters, like you could make Wakka a black mage or Rikku a damage dealer.
I could really use some help here. I want to have the same party throughout the game so we kinda journey together the whole time you know? So I was thinking of a starting party like a Monster Wrangler, a Martial Artist, A warrior and My Hero? What should I class them into later? Would this party work for the early game? I've played other Dragon Quest games but never this one.
The class change idea was really cool for it's time, but if you crunch the numbers it only makes sense to change 1 or maybe 2 characters to sages. Everything else is basically wasting your time. Although I have been tempted to make the ultimate party: Hero 3 x Pilgrim all spells -> Wizard Lv99 -> Fighter Lv99 The only problem is that would be extremely grindy and totally unnecessary.
Not in a position to rank them myself. X and the initial trilogy are the only ones I haven’t played. Wanting to roll with a cleric, wrangler, and thief to start. Also. That goddess lady at the beginning told me that I was “selfish, but it didn’t stop people from liking me” for whatever reason. She seemed disappointed because I read a sign telling me to go left in a cave, but followed my usual instincts of going right just to see what was over there. She dropped me into a hole. It’s kinda neat how the testing area changes based on how you answer the initial questions.
The sage is just a hybrid of mage and priest that's why I always made my warrior into a sage after Baramos learn all the spells then off to the role of fighter. My last party usually was 3 fighters with all skills learned
I agree that they should have done more to upgrade the Priest & Mage classes... Maybe some new Spells, or perhaps just making Magic spell damage higher in general. Still, the mages Buff & Utility Spells are just as amazing as they always were. It's just that maybe their Attack Spells don't quite stand out as much as they did before.
I was worried about Tranaitioning from Sage to Thief for the End Game due to their much lower Wisdom/MP growth in this version. However it turns out Seeds now work MUCH better than in past games & levels don't overwrite their gains, so now I can just dump all my Wisdom Seeds into my final game Thief! 😁
I thought I was the only one to power level before getting ship. I’m currently working gadabout tilll he gets all abilities at the abbey. He sucks so bad at fighting 😅
@@mastrblastrr I do this everytime. Switch between jobs to get all the best abilities then ultimately get 2 sages and a wildcard that are just loaded with abilities. A little bit of early game grinding pays off big time later.
Due to the high cost of that 100% critical hit skill STEAL Mad cap helms MP cost reduction IF yound find a BODY armor that also reduces MP costs POST game stick both IT and the Mad caps and that 100% Critical hit move goes from its high 68 MP cost to about about a MORE Managable 24 MP uses which then you can use with 400+ MP to kill even MORE Liquid medal slimes in the post game.
are gadabound like the chance spell? AKA mega farming spell, yeah it has a chance to kill you, but if one of the stuff goes off that can OHK one or more metals your raking in the exp.
So you essentially said start with a monster wrangler, mage and thief. Turn the monster wrangler into a sage after collecting 50 monsters. Switch the other two party members to a warrior and martial artist. Oh the tips and tricks hidden this video. 😅
This is my first DQ game ever and my characters Priest-->Monk, Thief-->Beastmaster and Merchant-->Sage made my journey so far quite a breeze! Too bad the goofballs are only there to change to Sage, they have such a fun design
I went with Warrior, Thief, Mage then made my mage a Sage, my Thief a Warrior, and my Warrior a Martial Artist and the game has been smooth sailing since.
I started with Hero, Mage, Priest, Monster Wrangler... But in the opening hours monster wrangler didn't have any abilities, so i swapped in the Thief and kinda stuck with that so far ~15 hours
Every single vocation is SO much more fun, varied and balanced in this version than any other version of the game BY FAR and they ALL bring so much to the table for later multiclassing now instead of just stats and maybe one or two vaguely interesting utility spells like all non-spellcasters used to... I love them all in this game so much ;_;
I went Thief/Wrangler/Gadabout. My team went from great to awesome as soon as I was able to turn that gad into a sage. Right now though, the thief is holding my party back(not like it matters). But I don't want to change the thief, stealing stat items constantly is great. In the end I'm sure I'll go into another sage and either a warrior or MA with my thief and MW.
I was surprised how much i loved the fighter class over the mage! Really enjoying the game it just makes me feel like a kid again and the music is wonderful! I hope Dragon quest 4 thru 6 will get the same treatment the first three games are getting. As much as i love this game i do really miss having my party have dialogue & personalities, with their own struggles and backstory! Also David what would you like to see done in the new Dragon quest game that has not been done before?!
Thanks for this guide. My mage was getting demolished in two hits no matter what I do. Glad to know it's just how the class is. Do you plan on making a guide for which class is best to upgrade from? Like is it better to upgrade a warrior to a martial artist? I'm thinking about doing that with mine and upgrading my mage to a better class.
Another hidden benefit of Martial Artists compared to Warriors: their early game equipment is CHEAP and/or free. A good Martial Artist can do as much or more damage with a CYPRESS STICK as a warrior can with a Copper Sword. (In fact, the Copper Sword REDUCES their attack power LOL). Also, it gives you a reason to go after the Golden Claw in the pyramid, which is essentially free (if you can survive the trial to keep it), and is going to be best-in-slot for them for most of the mid-game.
On Dracky mode you can't DIE if NOT I had to use like 3x LV 60+ party members BEFORE takign those claw out to NOT use up 99 healing items in your bag besides the Golden Golems that you'll need to farm for 800,000+ Gold FOR the 2nd POST game dungeon has the Golden Claws to STEAL if you steal more then 4 sell the rest for like 6000 each.
Another great/excellent video for this new RPG game. Was thinking of making a new file pretty soon but been having trouble with what classes to have in the start of the game. Thanks for telling me the merchant can use whips and boomerangs. Was going to Cleric to have a good healer with the Martial Artist and Merchant; but now I am considering what you told about how good the Monster Tamer is with all his/her potential. Plus, making him/her into a Saga with double actions (might want to remind me how you get that ability) is pretty awesome and makes him/her many times more useful. Thanks for all the tips! Just wondering, what you suggest I change my merchant into class wise once I get all HER spells/abilities? Thinking of changing my monster Tamer to a sage of course and maybe my martial artist to a Cleric to have a Stronger, faster and hard-hitting healer, unless you think otherwise since you don't recommend one in late game, even with great healing abilities. Last thing. I learn in another video that having a monster tamer to be able to heal before/after getting the Gold Claws in the Pyramid makes the journey more tolerable.
Feels like the Priest is quite overvalued in this list. I much prefer Wizards because they get the most AoE options and also have fun utility / ailment spells to take advantage of for certain boss fights (eg Fuddle / Snooze for Boss Troll). Better yet they get the Morph spell which gives them the option to transform into a duplicate of another party member so they are almost always useful. Being able to equip the Duplic Hat while the Priest cannot is another big point in the Wizard's favor. The spell list for Priest is certainly good, but especially in this remake I'd argue they aren't useful in the early game because of the HP / MP restored on level-up (as you noted) and also there's dozens of items laying about that can take care of healing outside of combat. It took me until Reeve to notice my team ever taking more than one point of damage even on Draconian, and sometimes you just want a fast Wizard to clear out encounters instead of leaning on a Priest to bounce back from them.
So from what i can gather the Mage and Priest got shafted, Though i didn't plan on taking them to the end game any how as my mage will either end up as a Thief or Warrior and my Priest will either end up as a Thief, Merchant or Martial artist. Once i'm done with the Monster Wrangle he'll be changed into a sage.
I don’t believe previous versions actually had elemental weaknesses. Also Wisdom actually influences magic damage for HD-2D. And Mages having Buff and Kabuff in III is a nice thing to have earlier on with how hard Robbin Ood can hit
Hey David :) Gadabout and Merchant is still bad, I would have put mage above merchant because at least they can use poison needle and assassin's dagger for metal killing. Rescuing 50 monsters gets you one of the best rings in game.
i turned my Priest into a Warrior once i got all spells and the mage into sage, im still stuck with the wrangler since i want to lear all his abilities as well before switching to Martial artist or something Gadabout, Merchant and Thief will be the last 3 i level only after i beat the game tho since i dont plan on using them

Love the analysis of them. I've held off playing 3, waiting for this remake and I love the vocations. I think they did a great job of giving all of them something that makes them useful, even if it's out of combat. My favourites at the moment are priest and merchant!
Couldn't agree more!
As always, you deliver everything and more! I now understand why my mage is trailing behind so much. Time to class change.
loved this video!! Great job Quester!!
Thanks so much!!
Worth pointing out with the Thief that there are a few monsters that do react to sight, so Snoop doesn't work, but Invisibility does for them. I noticed a few after I started the Orb hunting quest.
Great video. I’m stalled in a dungeon right now, so I’m going to swap out my mage for a martial artist
Hope you enjoy it!
The female merchant looks just like Bulma, in the Pilaf arc of Dragon Ball... Neat!
Makes sense: Bulma was always flaunting her _wares_ in the original. 😄
@@Mr_Darren_Payneisn't she like 15 during that time?
@@ereviscale3966 Yeah, about 15 or 16, and very little shame.
and IRC Goku is around 8 or 9 in the Original Dragon ball.
Um… funny thing about Quest and Ball resemblances…
I watch your videos for rpg games it gave me a push to buy dragon quest 3 remake i enjoy it alot its just a chill game so i went ahead and bought dragon quest 11 until they release dragon quest 12 thanks for your videos keep up the good work you got a sub out of me thank you david
Thanks for subscribing! I’m really happy you’re enjoying the game.
Any thing i should know about switching classes? Can i have characters that learn everything?
Yea but it’s a huge grind. You won’t be doing anything like that until you get easy access to Liquid Metal slimes.
There’s also not much of a reason to do so. If you wanna get the trophy for all learned abilities, just have each character go through 3 distinct jobs
I watched highspirits beat Zoma yesterday and the monster rangler was his main damage dealer. Good stuff.
"Whips and Boomerangs make the mage worse"
Mage spells don't have falloff as they progress through the enemies from left to right, and the availability is really low.
It adds so many options and makes each play through different.
ugh as soon as the heavenly flight song began at @3:50 i had huge pangs of nostalgia
Would love to see you get really into the weeds and rank the personality types.
Hi David thanks. I'm nervous to play this :) I don't remember the original but I know I played it at some point...
Love your channel! Big points for Sylvando reference... he brings the party 🎉 but will also murder you 💀
Monster Wrangler surprised me in a great way and imo you are underrating it.
My team is Hero and three Priests. Priests are surprisingly strong fighters in this game too.
The class change idea was really cool for it's time, but if you crunch the numbers it only makes sense to change 1 or maybe 2 characters to sages. Everything else is basically wasting your time.
Although I have been tempted to make the ultimate party:
Hero
3 x Pilgrim all spells -> Wizard Lv99 -> Fighter Lv99
The only problem is that would be extremely grindy and totally unnecessary.
(In the words of the Ben/Fred Savage meme) "Do it!" 😂
Not in a position to rank them myself.
I changed my Gadabout to sage. Can you also use the words of wisdom to change a mage to sage. Is it worth it to have 2 sages?
You can and it is!
Nice! Can't wait till my Martial Artist gets to level 47! He's already at level 35 and i haven't even got the ship yet.
Where my Bards at
I wonder if dragon quest 12 will have the monster coliseum?
You and me bro, got it on switch for the feels since they were always a Nintendo game!
are gadabound like the chance spell? AKA mega farming spell, yeah it has a chance to kill you, but if one of the stuff goes off that can OHK one or more metals your raking in the exp.
so a good start-party would be hero-wrangler-thief-warrior?
So you essentially said start with a monster wrangler, mage and thief. Turn the monster wrangler into a sage after collecting 50 monsters. Switch the other two party members to a warrior and martial artist. Oh the tips and tricks hidden this video. 😅
This is my first DQ game ever and my characters Priest-->Monk, Thief-->Beastmaster and Merchant-->Sage made my journey so far quite a breeze!
Too bad the goofballs are only there to change to Sage, they have such a fun design
I kind of want to go Hero-Martial-Wrangler to make use of the new classes, and then Priest->Sage as caster.
I went with Warrior, Thief, Mage then made my mage a Sage, my Thief a Warrior, and my Warrior a Martial Artist and the game has been smooth sailing since.
Thinking on playing this with 3 Members only on Draconian Quest mode.
Curious how hard Draconian Quest mode is?
I started with Hero, Mage, Priest, Monster Wrangler... But in the opening hours monster wrangler didn't have any abilities, so i swapped in the Thief and kinda stuck with that so far ~15 hours
Being a passionant DQIII Fan, I LOVED the gadabout...she was just the fun sexy airhead comic relief...and I fully accepted that
Every single vocation is SO much more fun, varied and balanced in this version than any other version of the game BY FAR and they ALL bring so much to the table for later multiclassing now instead of just stats and maybe one or two vaguely interesting utility spells like all non-spellcasters used to... I love them all in this game so much ;_;
I went Thief/Wrangler/Gadabout.
My monster wrangler was doing 900 damage a turn to baramos. That class is overpowered if you catch monsters
I think you're sleeping on the monster wrangler David.
They're good for the beginning of the game, but they shouldn't be taken into the end game at all
Loving this game.
what classes would you recommend for the beginning of the game?
I don’t believe previous versions actually had elemental weaknesses.
Also Wisdom actually influences magic damage for HD-2D.
And Mages having Buff and Kabuff in III is a nice thing to have earlier on with how hard Robbin Ood can hit
this is my first DQ game and i'm loving it.
I already have one sage, but I kind of want to take 2 sages into the end game 😅 is that a bad idea?
Just Curious, I caught the 50 Monsters for Beast Mode. However, do I have to level to fully unlock it?
Hey David :) Gadabout and Merchant is still bad, I would have put mage above merchant because at least they can use poison needle and assassin's dagger for metal killing. Rescuing 50 monsters gets you one of the best rings in game.
currently have a warrior, mage and priest, what should i change them into. so lost lol
i turned my Priest into a Warrior once i got all spells and the mage into sage, im still stuck with the wrangler since i want to lear all his abilities as well before switching to Martial artist or something
Gadabout, Merchant and Thief will be the last 3 i level only after i beat the game tho since i dont plan on using them
Can you only change each class once? Or learn from 2 and have a 3 sets of abilities?
Love your analysis here. I wish I had picked a priest instead of a mage
Glad you enjoyed!
Job class rankings with David
If the sage had access to all the spells do I even need ti have a mage or a priest become a sage ?
No. In fact I would recommend that they not become a sage
