can i ask why people are talking about Samantha Barks and Lea Salonga on a video of Linzi Hateley? come on, i love Sam and Lea but save the discussions for videos of them.
I love them both but their fans are so disrespectful for other Eponines. It’s hard to explain to them that Frances Ruffelle for example is very important in creating Eponine for the musical.
By any measurement, this is the best personification of this song. Others do not come close. The melodic change in the passage "All my life, I've only been pretending" is ingenious. Whether it was written or she Ad-libbed it, it completely blew me away. That little passage has always bothered me in the original score. This fixes it beautifully.
I love linzie very classy and so soft and tender. Very fine acting and great singing style. If she is Eponine in real life, Marius will find her irresistible.
I come to this version and it completely blows me away every single time. That final chorus is perfection, that voice is so strong yet vulnerable, controlled yet still chock with character and imperfection. The “I love him” channels such a classical tone, it sounds like she’s singing from her head and her gut, she’s wanting it to sound timeless and operatic yet still a tiny little rasp and humanity to it. Then the “pretending” is simply sensational… she is slowly building to it and making us wait so that when she hits it she goes and uses all her power to blow us away. It’s perfect in the storytelling sense too as it shows the gradual realisation in her character, it’s all building to this grand conclusion in her mind as she finally comes to see that everything in her life that makes her happy is simply a dream, there’s this gut-wrenching tragedy in that moment but also the way she is owning it and shouting that realisation to the heavens it’s as if she is making every bit of that pain her power, she turns it into her super strength. It’s how she’s survived. There is pain in it, but she’s also in a way congratulating herself on what she’s survived. Yes it’s tragic, but she’s owning that power. That power to have love and hope in the darkest times… no matter how tragic that is… it’s like she see the light in that… in this moment… that’s her greatness, her power and her purpose finally realised. Great version!
Absolutely love this version Linzi has this intensity and emotional capability that she is able to portray so much without prancing around the stage and making this song too "poppy" In the second half of the song her tone changes and it's pitch perfect- she's both depressed and angered with herself and Marius I honesty love how she can portray that so well without over doing the song like many others. I love Eponine's who use the hat as a prop or do gestures as well but to see the same intensity without all that is just astounding. Every note and emotion is pitch perfect and amazing One of my favorites.
My favorite version. Such a pure beautiful voice. She's the only one I've ever heard sing "the city goes to bed and I can live inside my head" in one breath. Love that. Also breathtaking emotion conveyed through her eyes.
Wow! He voice, naturally, was great... But I think her acting is what made the song. She was completely in the moment and could "see" it from the start.
I saw this clip on one of those Channel 4 '100 Greatest Shows', the musicals one. It made me fall in love with Les Mis and Linzi remains one of my all time favourite Eponines because of that. I still feel how I felt when I first heard/saw it every time I watch this. Amazing. So grateful that I got introduced to Les Mis (and Linzi's voice)!
Love this, love her! I got to see the original London cast perform in 87. Francis Ruffelo (who is also amazing was not performing that day) I believe it was Linzi who was the alternate and her performance reduced me to tears. Colm is Jean ValJean and Linzi is Eponine
What a revelation. I can't believe it's taken me this long to find this beautiful piece of history. I'm conscious that this was shot when Les Mis was still fresh, bold and staggering, before the casting became templated, and the production elements reduced to bare bones tourist fodder. My heart pines.
Yes, Lea is undoubtedly a technically brilliant singer, and in Miss Saigon she is unsurpassed in my opinion. But I love this performance by Linzi, she was the first person I saw in this role and I love her innocence and naturalness in this song. Perfect.
There are many remarkable interpretations of this song, and I totally love Lea Salonga and her incredible (and beautiful) voice. But I agree with you about Linzi. She is truly amazing, and in this particular song she seems to have surpassed all the others. Thank you for posting this!!!
Kaho Shimada does that high note on the official Complete Symphonic Recording from 1988. Linzi may have originated it, not sure, but Shimada definitely did it as early as 1988.
I love that the first two reasons why you like her are 'she can project, and sing in tune'. That's a pretty base requirement for someone in a West End show, to be honest. Her voice is lovely though.
Holy shit, holy shit - I found it - does anyone know where the remainder of this “behind the scenes Les Miz” special is? I unfortunately have re entered a circa mid 90s high school les Miz listening to obsession again, and I was recalling this program I had on VHS (now prob in a dump somewhere for 20 yrs now) back in 1991/92 and I remember I wore out this section of it and the other full performance numbers sections of the video. If I recall they also had One D More and Lovely Ladies?? - anyone know where to find the full version??
How very mature and classy of you to call me such insulting names. I'm sure Lea Salonga would be very proud of you if she read these precious, beautiful comments that you just posted. How lovely.
I don't get people still referring to lea salonga? she's amazing but frankly I didn't feel it at all?? she simply sings the song. I love her in miss Saigon and her singing is amazing but she didn't exactly act it out? linzi is the most well rounded eponine I've ever seen.
Lea is simply too strong for the character IMO. She overpowers points where Linzi is sensitive and heartfelt in her entire approach. I adore this version of this song.
I totally agree with you there about the timing. They had to cut it back because it was a film now, not a musical and they had to pretend the songs were the words even though it is when it comes to musical films. :)
Oh, right. Because Linzi is so raw that she doesn't seem to be acting at all. I stared at her eyes the whole time I replayed her performance and it's dead as shit. You see, it's not just about the voice, but the way the actress gives life to the character. I would have respected your views if you pinned Frances Ruffelle against Lea.
I honestly love Samantha Barks' version. She portrays Eponine as a girl who loves Marius but would do anything for his happiness. She has so much emotion in her singing, so much and has a beautiful voice. :)
Oh my god! Did you seriously just ask that?! I can't breathe. My own laughter is choking me. I should have known that I'm chatting with Claire from The Breakfast Club.
sorry Lea Salonga fans...Lea's voice is superb and I think she's the best singer in the role...but the original, Frances Ruffelle, is the best especially at this song. The song is all about anguish--Lea Salonga does a fantastic job at it, but I don't believe her emotion; she's too stuck on being "pure" in her diction and notes. Ruffelle was sloppier with her enunciation but she nailed the anguish and emotion---the critical part of this song. She deserved her Tony
The voice: I can’t think of anybody else with the same level of vocal technique as Lea. Plus, the way she mixes voice is astounding, her chest voice, mixed voice and head voice almost sound the same because of how she maneuvers it. And this why many people think she has a perfect pitch. The acting: She won a Tony, Olivier, Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Theatre World Award all in one season. Only a handful of people have achieved this feat. So to answer your comment, her top-notch vocal technique plus her awards winning acting performance would make a great Eponine (if you look across many mediums in the internet and out, this is commonly agreed to by many people)
I remember this documentary when it was first aired! It was shortly after I saw LES MIS on Broadway in 1992, I believe. Linzi Hateley's Eponine is one of the best, imo. I vastly prefer her to Frances Ruffelle.
listen again when Linzi goes in that high..."...all my life, Ive only been pretending"...and then listen to Samantha singing, or Salonga, or Pati Lupone. Nobody does what Linzi did, goi9ng in that pitch "preteeeeeending.." all the others go down. Linzi is the BEST Eponine
I already know why you don't like me. You were offended when I said that some people who likes Lea's version are biased. Which means that you are biased. Maybe because she's from the Philippians, just like you? Hahaha
Lea Salonga is not the "end all be all" Eponine. Usually a lot of people think she is because they're biased and still stuck on the 10th Anniversary when they were kids. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. The fact of the matter is, Lea wasn't exactly right for the role. She just sounded too elegant and polished, which is not how Eponine should sound like.
Lea’s voice was too perfect for a character like Eponine, I agree. But all artists who portrayed Eponine are also too good to be Eponine, they don’t sound like a street rat at all. They sound like classically trained singers lmao
Okay. NP. I love Linzi's performance. But I always prefer Lea Salonga. She possesses the quality that can capture the heart of most people. It's so powerful. The first version of "On My Own" that I've heard is that of Frances Ruffelle. But When I got the chance to watch the "10th Anniversary" it had a different effect on me And no performer has appealed to my emotion the way Lea does. Even her performances as Fantine and Kim in "Miss Saigon". She really has this uniqueness as a performer.
You're right, Linzi Hateley is one of the best Eponine's ever. Fact.
can i ask why people are talking about Samantha Barks and Lea Salonga on a video of Linzi Hateley? come on, i love Sam and Lea but save the discussions for videos of them.
They can talk and its subjective but without really knowing any performers or having any stake in this, this is the best performance of this song ever
@@seanachiescourt6659 I only just discovered her and I agree. In my opinion this is the best version.
I love them both but their fans are so disrespectful for other Eponines. It’s hard to explain to them that Frances Ruffelle for example is very important in creating Eponine for the musical.
This version is the one I fell in love with years ago....
Linzi's delivery of "the trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers" is my favorite.
the MOST PERFECT rendition ~ not just singing ... living, loving, heart broken performance! thank you so much ~
feeling it in my bones
Linzi is the only performer that ever gave me goosebumps after hearing her rendition of this song, and she's a doll too lol.
and if you saw Les Mis in London in the last 31 years. that's Linzi screaming during "Attack on Rue Plumet"
Love the the way she uses her diction. It's lovely.
I’ve just discovered this. I feel like the other ones are singers, but this one is the actual person. It feels much more real.
We get it, you all like Lea. This isn't about her, this is about Linzi. Kindly shut up about Lea.
Courtney Mancini Thank you!
@@clarelabellerose I see you again!!
I never liked lea much in thsi role. I can hear too much of her accent...Hadnt heard this before..its great!
Cuz Lea is better than anyone!
@@blueluny I thought Lea has a neutral accent
By any measurement, this is the best personification of this song. Others do not come close.

Well said, that melodic change makes or breaks the song for me!
I am with you!
I love linzie very classy and so soft and tender. Very fine acting and great singing style. If she is Eponine in real life, Marius will find her irresistible.
From Carrie to Eponine with in 6 months...not a bad trade :)

Lea actually said in one interview that it was Linzi Hateley's performance that inspired her to essay the role of Eponine.
Where is that interview? Can you show it to me? Thanks
I fell in love with linzi’s acting ever since seeing her in Carrie on RUclips
I always thought this was Francess!!! She sounds and looks like her!!!
Doesn’t sound or look anything like Frances. Same costume is all.

I wish they made Les Misérables a movie years ago, because Linzi would have been so good as Eponine but I love Samantha Barks in the 2012 movie

Hands down, best version of On My Own I have ever heard. Linzi is an amazing singer and best Eponine ever.
wait was she the inventor of that high note on "preTENding" 3:50
which is awful
It was either written for this iteration or ad-libbed by her. Regardless, it's brilliant. Far better than the droning of the original scoring.
Kaho Shimada does that high note on the official Complete Symphonic Recording from 1988. Linzi may have originated it, not sure, but Shimada definitely did it as early as 1988.
I heard this was the song she auditioned for Carrie with
It was.
Exactly I feel this way right now, just like Eponine.........
Absolutely breathe taking.
luv her, a mix of frances, lea, sam, and nancy.
one of the best
I saw her perform the role in London. I like that her is a little deeper but she still sings the song in the right key.
I love Linzi’s voice. Saw her in Joseph and she was the star of the show!

What a career she had to begin with. Going straight from Broadway’s biggest flop to the West End’s biggest success! Her head must have been spinning!
And that is why she brought tears to my eyes? No she was not robotically hollywoodian.
I like this version. Her characterization is closer to book!Eponine than most.
Omg, new favourite eponine! :D
the BEST without a doubt ~
They used the backing track for the CSR! LOL I noticed the slowness and the sound of Symphonic Orchestra! Tell me I'm right! Tell me!!! LOL
Ma version préférée
She has such a sweet voice :)
How I wish I could meet her
She’s a queen🙌
Pretending! YES, thank you Linzi for scratching an itch noone else could.
Glad I'm not the only one that loves that high note!
Lmao I hate that rendition of pretending it transforms the pain into hope imo
She did really well after the "and I know, it's only in my mind". However, the beginning didn't give me the "in love" and kind of enchanting feels
Oh my god! Did you seriously just ask that?! I can't breathe. My own laughter is choking me. I should have known that I'm chatting with Claire from The Breakfast Club.
Love her's and Lea Salonga's versions 😍😍😍
Actually there were a lot of actresses who played her that way before Lea,including Frances Ruffelle and Angela Pupello.
^THIS. Anyone who can hear Lea Salonga and not think she is the superior Eponine is kidding themselves!
Lea the best maan!
no
Go and watch her version then instead of commenting on another.
She's the best
