I've always liked this rendition. I especially like how she suddenly gets a different, fuller and darker tone in her voice starting with "And I know it's only in my mind..." It's as though the fantasy is over and this is reality now.
I saw Linzi in 1991 Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat. Starring alongside Jason Donovan. It was only by chance seeing her in a newspaper magazine in 2003 that she was starring in Chicago. So off to London I went, She was so good I went back the following night. Within a couple of weeks I purchased her 3 albums, the most recent is signed by Linzi for me. I wrote a poem about her for her and sent it to her. I had a lovely comment and praise from her. The last musical I saw her in was Mary Poppins when it first opened, I then moved to France but have since returned. Ruthie Henshall is very good on stage but, for me, LINZI HATELY is the best
Simply perfect, Linzi has an absolutely gorgeous voice, and a perfect balance of all the traits needed for this role. I saw this video many years ago at a friend's house and was very impressed and I have never forgotten her since. This video is part of a documentary, and (unfortunately) there is no video of the complete musical with Linzi performing as Eponim. There is also CD of her with many showtunes and other popular songs, but it is hard to get.
Never seen or heard her before. She is the definitive for me. I love this girl’s rendition of this!!! Now let me crawl out from beneath this rock I’ve clearly been living under.
AMEN! thanks for writing everything I was going to say!!! haha she's extraordinary in this role - and as you say there is NO comparison to any others. Also I find it extremely refreshing to hear a version of On my own that is not SCREAMED? It's so unnecessary! But that's just me! :)
I think voice wise and look wise, Linzi and Francis were more about being Eponine from the book. Their unique sounding, yet beautiful voices really make the character from the book real. Nowadays, people only care about how loud someone can belt. Linzi's one of my favorite Eponine's. This rendition of the song is lovely. :) Her voice does the song completely justice and I wish I could have seen her live somehow. In this, or Carrie. And I can't wait to see her in the film of Les Mis! :D
This is wonderful, but I have to say it's nothing compared to the marvellous performances she gave at the Palace Theatre in London. Every night she tugged at the heart strings and left the audience a sobbing mess by the end of the number.
I'm SO glad that in the new Les Mis movie, Epinone sung this song in a very similar fashion to this version. Not with the power or energy as Linzi here, but still closer to this version than those of Lea or Francis.. Nice!
Oh man...I think I like Linzi Hateley's version! She's singing and not overpowering the song! Thank you for uploading this clip. I thought I have settled in my mind that Lea Salonga is THE Eponine, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Do you have Linzi singing "A Little Fall of Rain"?
_condor,_ you are correct that Frances Rufelle was the original Epinone in the musical. She starred in both West End and Broadway productions. I love Linzi on stage and also have her 3 albums, the last (true colours) of which has a track called "without you" and is the best song she has done on all three of her albums. I can't find the track or album on you tube. I don't know how to upload the track from my album, my pc experience almost no existent
I agree. I saw the movie just last night and Samantha definitely did a very god job I was glad that she sung the song in a similar fashion to Linzi rather than Lea. Samantha is very attractive too.. nice movie.
Best version ! she hits the high note on "i've always been preetending" that to me makes or brakes the song , mabey im crazy ,I dont know, peace to the other sisters but they dont hit that note ..
I agree totally and it's one of the things that REALLY makes it for this song and her version. The others just kind of mouth the words.. she SINGS IT, FEELS it and BELTS it out.
I completely agree :) it's not like so many others that are like..."I CAN BELT LOOK AT ME GO!!" and sound nasily and stretched! It's beautiful. There seems to be this assumption that Eponine always needs to sound like she's dying (vocally) so it is often unnecessarily forced and penetrating to listen to..
Very nice job, but Leah IS (and always will be) Eponine as far as I'm concerned. I love the clarity of the video and different camera angles, which I've not seen on any other version of this song on RUclips or anywhere else. Where & where was this performed?
I think this version is slightly less than the barks samantha barks of some note intepreta better but is far superior to that of solonga read, also to Lea Michelle, for me the best Eponine are barks and Hateley
this, or any of the on stage versions should not be compared to the movie. singing for a movie is different than singing on stage. Samantha Barks didnt have to put power into the song like stage performers do, i personly think this song is better not powerful. Its tragic song and some versions (not this one) over power it and ruin the theme. I think this might be the best on stage version. However, this is one of the few songs i liked better in the movie
This is great, but personally I am swept away by Samantha Barks at the O2 concert. There's something about the way Samantha ends this song that no one else does as well.
in every videos of Eponine songs, Lea Salonga is always being compared to Frances, Sam, & others than everyone for doing Eponine. What can I say? It is a testament that Lea Salonga's version becomes a standard even if she's not the original Eponine. The rest will always be compared to the best! Yet! it's all about subjective preference I am hating no one.
saw this singer belt this out in London more than 30 yrs ago. Almost blew us all the way back to Australia. Brilliant.
And now you can see LINZI in Melbourne Sydney or Brisbane Spring 2025 Linz reprising her role as Madam in Keepers Wife xx
She's so pretty! Her voice is too.
I've always liked this rendition. I especially like how she suddenly gets a different, fuller and darker tone in her voice starting with "And I know it's only in my mind..." It's as though the fantasy is over and this is reality now.
By far the best version of On My Own and the best Eponine! Have loved this since I first heard it when I was 6 years old!!!
I officially can not stop watching this. Absolutely beautiful version.
This is the only Eponine that makes me want to cry...so beautiful.
Finally, a version worth listening to!!! Beautiful!
I used to serve her sweets in my dads shop many years ago , great stuff
Never seen this woman before. She's amazing.
Best version ever ~ EVER
Best version I've heard.

Agrees, someone who finally makes sense instead of blindly trashing the film just because it isn't the stage production.
Best version of "On My Own" by far.
Never seen or heard her before. She is the definitive for me. I love this girl’s rendition of this!!! Now let me crawl out from beneath this rock I’ve clearly been living under.
Best ever
Best voice in west end shows
wow, that was the best.
The original Carrie!!!
AMEN! thanks for writing everything I was going to say!!! haha she's extraordinary in this role - and as you say there is NO comparison to any others. Also I find it extremely refreshing to hear a version of On my own that is not SCREAMED? It's so unnecessary! But that's just me! :)
i agree
i love Linzi's version
u are not crazy! Damn its good to know I 'm not the only one! that 1 note makes this song.. I cant stand any other version.
I can see how she got the role of Carrie on Broadway! You can feel the longing for love and affection pouring out of her
When i was like 15 i think... i had a major crush on her when Les Miserables came to Singapore for concert....
I love Linzi’s voice! She could sing agadoo and make it sound great!

My favorite as well
wow, the first time I've heard her voice :o amazing :x:x:x
toshihiko sou you should check her out in the original Carrie the Musical
Linzi at her very best xx
Linzi is now playing Madame Thernadier at the Queens!!!!
a really beautiful voice and a perfect Eponine!! Wow...
ye...she is best
Best. VOCAL. Éponine. EVER. Don't confuse the singing and the actual performing.
so pretty...

Agreed!
Original and best!
HEEE WILLLL BURRRRN YOUUUU

This might be blasphemy but I like her better than Lea Salonga AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Linzi and Frances Rufelle. I'm biased to the British actresses lol 😂
Its really good but still the version that i saw yesterday preformed by a 1e year student ! I love that more. Her voice was more soft ans higher.
I always thought this was Frances because she sounds and resembles her!!
I completely agree :) it's not like so many others that are like..."I CAN BELT LOOK AT ME GO!!" and sound nasily and stretched! It's beautiful. ...I'M SO SORRY LEAH SALONGGA, BUT LINZI'S THE ORIGINAL, I LOVE HER MORE. HER SMOOTH SWEET VOICE MELTS MY HEART.
love her voice is little bit cracky at intense parts
OOOPS, sorry for the typo on Lea's name!
No sorry.. this is all I have of her at the moment. Sorry for the long delay in replying too. Be well.
Grate voice, but it sounds a bit like Elmer Foud when she pronounces "S".
Frances is still the best ❤
_My fav Éponine along side Lea, Samantha, and Eva. Her voice is not too whiny so it captured the emotion is should have_
Very nice job, but Leah IS (and always will be) Eponine as far as I'm concerned. I love the clarity of the video and different camera angles, which I've not seen on any other version of this song on RUclips or anywhere else. Where & where was this performed?
she sounds like a teenage girl. perfect for the role.
I think this version is slightly less than the barks samantha barks of some note intepreta better but is far superior to that of solonga read, also to Lea Michelle, for me the best Eponine are barks and Hateley
...I'M SORRY LEAH SALONGA, BUT SHE'S THE ORIGINAL...!
The original was actually Frances Rufelle, but Linzi Hately was pretty close after her.
classical version of cindy lauper LOL with a bit of being rubber ducky

I like Diana kaarina more
good singer, but she kinda has a sqeaky voice, but still one of the best eponines I have ever heard
No.
Eww... Sorry... But no.
