I absolutely love how in-depth you went with this. It is really easy to overlook just how powerful this performance is because she does it so effortlessly. Because she makes it look easy people just assume that it is easy and it is anything but. Her performance in the Saigon is literally one of my favorite things I’ve seen.

The 10th Anniversary stage performance of Les Miserable is stunning. It was my introduction to the production and I think it spoiled me. I've seen other productions and attended a live performance. They were great but still paled by comparison.

Same for me, it's just too good. No wonder they called it Dream Cast.
I had the same experience with the 25th Anniversary of the Phantom. It wasn't my introduction to the musical, but it's by far the best version and the rest just fall short.

I always felt that version was too polished. The same goes for Lea. Don't get me wrong, she's brilliant, and technically better, but I prefer Frances Ruffelle. The early London cast had a more rough working class edge to it, which I feel fits the story better.

This was a GOAT performance. No one will EVER do it better than Lea did. The way she ran out of breath at the climax was so emotional and heartbreaking. And not only her singing, but the way she physically portrayed Eponine was just perfect.

Okay, I turned that notification on again already! I mean, how could I not. Lea's singing is heartstopping. In Les Misérables, she played both Éponine and Fantine on Broadway, and also on their 10th and 25th anniversary respectively. When I first heard the 10th Anniversary (got it on DVD) I was blown away by the exceptional cast. Especially Lea and Colm. Though I have a hard time putting that dvd on nowadays since I got wind of Colm's abusive behavior.

    • @scott2836
      @scott2836 11 месяцев назад +2

I have no reason to believe that the behavior did not happen. And yet, there has been no word from any other production that Wilkinson was in that this kind of behavior was present. So I am not excusing Mr. Wilkinson, but I do wonder if he was encouraged to make the character more abusively violent. It points to conditions that exist in certain productions that were (are) just not managed well, compassionately, or safely, for the actors involved, in the name of "dramatic presentation". It is a terribly sad story that NEVER should have happened.

Another thing to note is something another reactor has pointed out: is how she fully immerses herself in the character she is portraying. Especially here. Even though she is singing ina "concert" setting, she doesn't break character. She is Eponine from start to finish.
Her perfectionism comes from having to be constantly struggling to prove herself. She had many critics when she first started ( being the first Asian performer to be cast in a major role on Broadway ). She faced a lot of criticism and prejudices, so she had to be absolutely perfect all the time. She could not afford to make any mistakes. But all that hard work has paid off because she has become a highly respected and admired performer with an undeniable world-class talent.

Okay, I have to admit I'm just learning about the technicalities of music and singing (surprising considering my advanced age, but it's never too late?). I've gotten hooked on these videos by Elizabeth. Finally I feel like I'm starting to understand some subtleties of the skills and techniques that make a performance remarkable. I'm also extremely impressed by the emotional connection Elizabeth has with performers, whether they are singing opera, rock (including my favorites from the 70s and 80s!), metal, folk, or fantastic musicals like Les Mis. My only request would be...what about some U2??? Beautiful Day? One? With or Without You? Sunday Bloody Sunday? Where the Streets Have no Name? Elizabeth, it would be great to get your take on Bono's vocals (which may or may not be sophisticated), the lyrics, and the arrangements. Regardless, keep them coming, this is my favorite channel on RUclips!

I went with some friends to see "Les Mis" in NYC during the '80's, and while I wasn't really all that into Broadway shows at that time, I went anyway, and was not disappointed AT ALL! Some shows would be wasted on me, but this was definitely not one of those. Although the story is rather tragic, some of the performances are *outstanding*... as is this particular performance from Lea Salonga. Just incredible!!! Lea Salonga is AMAING. When you listen to her as Kim in Miss Saigon she has all of this control and she is barely 18 in that production.
If you happen to listen to the Complete Symphonic Recording of Les Mis, Kaho Shimada plays Eponine. She originated the role in Japan, and was selected for this ENGLISH sung album...she (at the time) did not know any English and learned how to sing the song in English in a very short time. Elizabeth, you are such a fangirl... and i love it. This reaction made me really happy and you are absolutely right, Lea Salonga is awesome. However, now that you started this, you have to react to other Les Miserables songs as well. For example, "I dreamed a Dream" or "Bring him Home".

It's interesting how Les Miserables has changed for me as I've aged. When I first saw it as a young man, the loneliness and hopeful longing of On My Own really spoke to me; but decades later, I was surprised to find myself much more affected by Fantine's I Dreamed a Dream -- her deep anger and regret moved me to tears.

Speaking of Disney princesses, in this show there's ofc also Judy Kuhn, the singing voice of Pochahontas. I would love for you to react to "A Heart Full of Love" from this concert where the two "princesses" battle, or should that be belting it out, for the affection of Michael Ball's Marius. The notes this trio of amazing singers hit at the end of that particular song, omg it's simply out of this world!

This song is one of the most saddest love songs in musicals. She is one of the greatest voices for Eponine and Fantine and I cannot wait to see what they have in store for the 50th anniversary of this musical.

Having seen Le Mis many years ago on Bway I have often wondered if the emotional response is to the voice, the musical composition or the V Hugo interperative plot. Certainly the character of Cosette is an underdog and her traumas carry from separation from Eponine, the cruel treatment by the T's at the inn, and then this section of unrequited love. So it is a build up and this is the creshendo of emotionally traumitic events. Excellent theatrical singer without a doubt, but would we connect emotionally with the voice and music alone? For me a suspect the story is more impactful, but no at all discounting her amazing talent.

Les Mis is without a doubt my absolute favourite musical, and this concert is sooooo good. Eponine's story is the most tragic of all of the main characters. Empty Chairs and Val Jean's Epilogue are the ones that always get me teary... I would love an analysis of the Epilogue from this concert.

I saw Les Misérables live for the first time a few years ago and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. It's not my favourite musical (though it is up there), but I have NEVER been so moved watching a live performance. I had literal tear tracks down my face and completely ruined my makeup because I cried pretty much the whole way through lol
If I ever saw Lea live, I'd probably just die 😆Just listening to this gave me full body goosebumps!

    Reaction/Analysis/Deep Dive Request:
As you are a HUGE fan of Queen AND Freddie Mercury, I'm sure that you're WELL aware of the fact that one of the key elements to their sound is the 3-part vocal harmonies of Freddie, Brian May (Lead guitarist) & Roger Taylor (Drummer) (Bass guitarist John Deacon DID NOT contribute vocals in the studio. When performing live, his microphone was almost ALWAYS set to either "LOW" or "OFF". While filming music videos, he would mime his "vocals"). As you have already expressed your opinions and feelings regarding Freddie, I'm surprised that you have YET to do deep dives into the other 2 voices that make their harmonies SO WELL KNOWN and remembered.
Here are 2 Queen songs with Brian and Roger each singing lead vocals, respectively:
"'39": ruclips.net/video/kE8kGMfXaFU/видео.html (Brian May on lead vocals)
"I'm in Love with My Car": ruclips.net/video/a8EYUKmmnqc/видео.html (Roger Taylor on lead vocals)
BONUS! As we've already established, with Freddie being Freddie, he was MORE THAN CAPABLE of recording ALL OF THE VOCALS for a song without help from the other members of the band & THIS song is the PERFECT example of that. Brian & Roger ONLY contributed guitar and drums, respectively. (WARNING: Contains false ending, let video play til the end!)
"You Take My Breath Away": ruclips.net/video/v_wLNqUz7pM/видео.html

Uh-oh - you're about to open the long-standing debate about who was the better Eponine - Lea Salonga or Frances Ruffelle. There's no real answer as both camps are pretty entrenched in their opinions. As for me, I prefer Frances as she was the first and created the role of Eponine and to me gives the better portrayal of the character through her voice. That being said, I think Lea has the better, stronger, more classically-trained voice. On its own and not in the context of the production, she's astounding. As the character, Eponine, however, she just seemed much too powerful and did not possess as much of the essence of Eponine for me as Frances did. In the end, I just prefer Frances' performance more. Maybe it's also because I saw her perform it first, so that's how I picture the role being interpreted - with some vulnerability and sadness that builds into her eventual strength.

I absolutely love this channel. You are such an amazing human being. Watching your content provides me with precious moments of relaxation, which are especially necessary on days when my country (Israel) is in the midst of a horrible war, and my university studies have been delayed indefinitely. Thank you for yet another spark of purest and genuine joy and appreciation you share with us, it's really like a ray of light and hope even on some of the darkest of days💜 and for showing the before unseen (at least for an untrained ear) brilliance and balance between technique and emotion, it's always a treasure to hear you break it down into a bunch of fascinating nuances. And btw the unclear register usage you mentioned here kinda reminded me of Ronnie James Dio's vocal performance in the ballad "catch the rainbow" (speaking about the live 1977 Munich version) and the first of the improvised parts where he intermittently uses lower pitched yet very very floaty and soft sound with a higher more solid sound, it sounds goosebumpy just to listen (as well the entire song tbh), I bet with your vocal knowledge you might discover even more awesomeness and put into words better than I ever can, especially with your feel for the stuff between the lines and beyond the technique. Anyway, thank you for your videos (and sorry for the sidetracking, it's just that Ronnie's voice lives in my head rent-free and I've never seen anyone put as much thought and appreciation into your analysis of his voice as you), hopefully your day is being kind with you

For THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW: Check out some of Elizabeth's operatic performances on here that uniquely qualify her to analyze any performance. Stunning control in her vocal prowess. Not just having range, but a fluidity as she projects her voice with emotion while maintaining a command of what each piece of music requires. I was never a big fan of Opera before, but going through her performances, one cannot help but appreciate the stunning nature of what she has accomplished vocally. She is next level...countless hours of dedication to the craft to pull off what she has done
