This is my favourite Les Mis song, and this is my favourite performance of the song. This is the performance I have always measured other performances by, and needless to say I have never found one that I prefer. If i had just one criticism of Lea Salonga's performance, it is that I could never understand how Marius could be so stupid as to not fall in love with Eponine. I mean seriously, I cannot see the pain in those eyes at the end without shedding a tear and wanting to give her a big hug.

In the book Eponine is in much, much worse shape, hoarse-voiced and half-starved and filthy, and Marius feels great pity for her but thinks of her almost as a child rather than a woman his own age.

What I love about Lea is her tone. She's the only one who sang this song who's not shrill. Her voice sits perfectly in the key. The others sound like the key is a bit too high or a bit too low for them.

Excellent and wonderful critique, pinpointing exactly why Lea Salonga is one of the greats of musical theater. She has done a few duets with fellow Philippino Arnel Pineda, who is now the lead singer for Journey. If you haven't heard him, he's a vocal mimic of Steve Perry, but can do several other vocal mimicries. I think that would be interesting to see, given how in this video you noted that a person's mouth, larynx, etc. dictate a signature sound. And on the musical theater train, Ramin Karmiloo's voice is truly unmatched and I may just spend the rest of the evening going down the youtube rabbit hole on him.

God so loveable & some of us going through tough times appreciate that comedy Lolli while getting to switch off our own concerns to the singers & music. Lea is just calm and in control. Wehay on "Piggy Lion" look but really communicates the positioning. You can tell Lolli has theatre understanding. Thank you Lolli. I can imagine you being a wonderful hypnotherapist with comedy to crack open clients in emotional pain to laugh & then transform because in laughter you cannot hold trauma for that moment. Sorry for my fan boying 😂. What a way Lea finished the song so gently

If someone ever produced an illustrated dictionary of music, this performance would be inserted as the illustration in the margin next to the definition of "musical theater." It is simply everything that musical theater could possibly be. It is, as the Fairy Voice Mother describes it, continuous perfection. And, Lolli gives this a fresh polish with her brilliant analysis. I am not a student of voice, but I was greatly enlightened without being inundated with minutia of vocal mechanics. Lea Salonga stands alone, but Lolli's review gives full justice to this utterly perfect performance. Well done!

Thank you for selecting this performance. Lea is the gold standard for all that play Éponine. She is the queen of musical theatre diction and I appreciate the restraint she uses in the final big notes. (Too many others belt the crap out of them.) Honestly, you could review the entire 10th anniversary show as a special live stream event. It's just that good. But I would suggest Colm Wilkinson - my favorite Valjean - singing "Bring Him Home" during the same concert.

Still the standard for Eponine to me. I grew up on Lea as Jasmine and Mulan. Loving her voice lead me to this concert, this concert made me fall in love with Le Mis, which then made me fall in love with musical theatre. So the point is: Lea Salonga is a goddess and we appreciate her.

Lea has been performing in her home country of the Philippines since she was 7 years old. (She was born in 1971.) Lea did theater, albums, concerts, film and TV as a child and teenager before she was discovered for MISS SAIGON at age 17. Lea originated the lead role in MISS SAIGON at age 18 in the West End, age 20 on Broadway, and won every major theater award in both countries for her portrayals. You already mentioned that Lea is the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan.
Lea was the first Asian/non-Caucasian to play Eponine on Broadway (in 1993) and then was part of this 10th anniversary concert in 1995. Lea went into the LES MISERABLES Broadway revival in 2007 as Fantine and then played Fantine at the 25th anniversary concert in 2010. Lea is one of only 2 actors to play roles in both the 10th and 25th anniversary LES MIZ concerts (the other was Jenny Galloway), but the only one to play two different roles.
I love that people with no vocal training can just watch this performance and love it, but people with vocal training have an even greater appreciation of Lea's talent. Thank you for appreciating Lea's acting in addition to her amazing singing.
I really hope you'll check out more of Lea's performances. So many wonderful ones! Just a couple off the top of my head: Lea Salonga rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting", Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at MISS SAIGON 25th anniversary concert, Lea and Regine Velasquez sing a musical medley, Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from LES MIZ 10th anniversary concert.
P.S. Her name is pronounced LAY-ah.

You are one talented lady and a wonderful vocal coach. This video lasted 20:35 in length so your concern about how long it would last was not a concern at all.
Let me present to you an analogy of what I am about to suggest. Let's assume we were students in a mathematics class and the teacher was about to introduce us to a difficult mathematical theory. He gets up to the blackboard with his chalk and begins the process with chalk in one hand and an eraser in the other hand. He speaks calmly at first and then his voice becomes louder and more rapid and he seems to be really into what he is doing. He is not pausing to point anything out. He wants his class to feel the thrill of what he is doing without explanation. He is so into it his chalk keeps breaking because he is pressing so hard against the blackboard. He winds up with a very tiny piece of chalk in his hand as he completes his task. He turns and looks at the class and the expressions on their faces is exactly what he wanted to see. They have no idea what he just did but they were thrilled watching him 'do his thing'. After a short 5 second pause (which seemed like 5 minutes) he spoke to the class. "What I just showed you is something you will need to guide you forever in your quest to be a competent mathematical tactioner. Now, let me explain what I just did. Get out your note books and get ready to start writing."
My dear 'The Fairy Voice Mother', it would have been so nice to hear Lea sing the song straight through and enjoy every note she sang and actually start tearing up by the end of the song. THEN, if I was a student wanting to become a great singer, I would be so excited to listen to what you were about to explain to me what Lea was doing. But, you chose, instead, to turn a beautiful moment into a shredded salad of sorts and although everything you said was expertly said, no one listening felt the beauty of what was going on. With the mathematics teacher, if he started explaining what he was doing from the very beginning he would have lost his class very early on because they were not appreciating the end result.
Let us make another analogy. Let's go into the kitchen. Mom just made some soup with a ton of ingredients in it. Oh my gosh, it was terrific! We blurted out, "Mom how did you do that! It was so delicious!" Or it could have gone like this, "My daughter come here and let me show you how to make some soup." She continued and lost her daughter when she was explaining to her how much of this and how much of that. Point being, if her daughter had tasted the soup first, she would have been 'all in' in regards to knowing what mom had done.
Who am I? Just a guy walking down the street who will say hello to you as we begin to pass one another. After that you may have thought for a second, "Gee, that was nice. I wonder what he's all about?"

"How long have you got". Lolli, we have as long as you'll keep us enthralled. By that, I mean as long as you keep talking. Also, this video reminded me that I love to hear you sing. I believe it's time for a another song. I'd also like to get your take on Katrina Velarde, who is just another Filipina with mad skills(at least I think so).

I've watched this reaction several times now. So terrific! There are so many other Lea performances that I'd love for you to react to. Many other people have mentioned Regine Velasquez, so how about Regine and Lea's musical medley? It's pretty fantastic. I'm a huge fan of Lea and her solo performances, but also a lot of her duets. I'd also recommend (in no particular order): Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain", Lea rehearsing "I'm Still Hurting" from THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Lea singing "It's Quiet Uptown" at her concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2022, Lea and Josh Groban singing "All I Ask of You" and "The Prayer" at his concert in Manila 2019 (there's a vid of both songs plus their banter together on stage before and in-between songs), Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "The Movie In My Mind" at the MISS SAIGON 25th Anniversary Concert in 2014, Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "I Know Him So Well" at the London Palladium.

I first saw this concert about 25 years ago on TV. It was just playing in the background & between Philip Quast singing 'Stars'...& LEA SINGING THIS SONG....I was hooked. Bought myself a couple of orchestra seat tix & a DVD of the 10th Anniversary performance & have fallen in love with Les Mix & even got to see her when she appeared about 18 years ago at a casino in northern Calif. I flipped out when I was offered the opportunity for two free tix to see her at an upcoming show in my hometown at the end of April....but was sadly disappointed when she's already sold out within a day or two.

As someone who can't sing at all but can play piano it is so intriguing and enlightening hearing singers/coaches talk about great vocal performances. I feel like it makes me understand piano more.

I enjoyed your reaction as well as your analysis and explanation of vocal techniques that Lea Salonga used in this performance. Your being a professional vocal coach makes a big difference from many reactors who are obviously just collecting views for monetary gain. I'm going to subscribe.

I have found your channel through your reaction to Dimash's SOS and love that you refrain from just swooning over every video to please the respective fans and gain views and followers, but instead you actually analyse the technique and are able to reproduce it. I would love to see your reaction to Allison Luff's rendition of She used to be mine, which is by far my favorite of all versions on youtube. Thank you and keep up the amazing work

most technical reaction ever, many tnx for educating. most Filipino singers are musically talented even if not formally trained; she might sound unique but her vocal artistry is not rare here in our country.

I love your gleeful reactions! It is clear how much music inspires you. Please consider doing a reaction to Guy Sebastian singing “Standing With You” official video. His brilliant use of a plethora of vocal skills will excite you, I am quite sure, but it is his passion that will capture your soul! I love anything Guy sings and believe you can help us all find a way to bring such brilliance to our own singing. Much love to you, as always❤️

Amazing reaction! Even Ms. Leah told in an interview that she lost her voice at one point in her career because of daily Broadway shows where the management sent her to a voice therapist to regain her voice. I'm glad you point it out. New sub here!

You are the most informative of all the voice coaches Ive seen commenting on Lea singing this song. I wish I had a vocal coach but just singing along with Lea the last two weeks and I sense some improvements. Too bad I did not try singing when I was young. I always kinda wanted to . . .
