Regarding Lea breaking character: to be fair, this wasn't a concert production of the full show. It was part of MISS SAIGON's 25th Anniversary gala, which featured select songs by original cast members as part of the finale AFTER the actual performance. Rachelle had already sung "Movie in My Mind" in the show that night, without a riff in that part of the song, because it's never sung with one, and that's why Lea and the audience reacted so strongly. Lea wasn't breaking character, because, although she was clearly expressing strong emotion, she wasn't playing Kim; she was Lea Salonga singing the song.

The gala performance allowed them to have their comedic/break character moments. The same thing happened with Eva, Alistair, Lea and Simon were singing together. It's the same when Jon Jon and Jonathan sang The American Dream. As Lea said... they were all ready to drink and have fun!

The reviewer did say that. He said that it was a concert setting, so he is giving Leah a “pass.” But I agree with him. As a viewer, you will feel the song more if the singers don’t break character. She can do the applause after the song. But she’s Leah. She’ll get a “pass” anytime.😀

Just an opinion, but spontaneous moments like Lea's break are what make concerts so unique and interesting. We all know Lea would never break character in a theatrical performance, so her surprise and delight at that moment just made the performance that much more honest and memorable. I'm glad you didn't climb on her back too much about it. ;-)

I love how Lea reacted when Rachel is belting out that high note... just like one proud mama. This is the kind of approval a Filipino singer would love to have .... approval from "The Goddess". There are other great singers in the country, but we all know in the Philippines, Lea is the hardest to please. Not that she's a b**** but you just have to be perfect.

    • @manfromrome7710

She's actually not very hard to please..If you have watched The Voice Ph, you would know what I mean..Lea gets really excited even with average contestants..That's why she is one of my least favorite coaches in the show..The other three have higher standards and are much more difficult to please compared to Lea..Lea Salonga being easy to please is still a mystery I cannot fathom until today..I mean, she is practically a singing goddess..But her standards are quite low as seen in the show..

    • @athenstar10

@@manfromrome7710 She's a stage actress so exaggerated reaction is normal for them. She hears potential and excited what she can do to a talent and she's more than qualified to train... She also knows how sensitive Filipinos can be. If she appreciates talent, she's accused of being OA. If she'll be strict, she'll be called a B**** or a Diva, san sya lulugar? Let's be honest, when did we ever hear her sing off key? And being Kim is one of the toughest lead roles in Musical theater, I'm not sure if other famous pinoy singers can handle it. Don't quote me on this, even vocal coaches say that.

    • @manfromrome7710
      @manfromrome7710 4 года назад

@@athenstar10 I never once questioned her singing talent and capacity to coach..I just disagree with what you said that she, being a singing "goddess", is hard to impress..That is simply untrue..As I have said, she is the easiest to impress among the coaches in the VoicePH..And your response now proves that what I said was right..And please do not use her being a stage actress as an excuse for her being OA..It has nothing to do with it or is not entirely true..I mean, look at other stage actors..They do not act OA like Lea does..The problem with Lea is, she is OA..Her world revolves around the stage so much so that she cannot even be decent when she crosses over to movies and tv shows..You can tell that she is acting..it is soooo unnatural..Her acting is always off whenever she does movies or tv series..I do believe she is amazing on stage..But there are many stage actors who can also be great even outside stage productions..

@@athenstar10 Her acting outside stage plays and musicals are consistently cringe-worthy..btw, let me point this out, Lea can still be honest and and not come off as a DIVA..My issue with her as a coach is that she is very generous with praises and OA reactions of excessive amazement that she gives these even to basic singers..Unless she means every compliment she gives, she should tone it down 'cause her status as an artist and her easy to impress nature do not match..she comes off as plastic tuloy..when I found out na isa siya sa coaches, I thought to myself na she would be the best one..She has the experience and the know-how..But she, little by little, lost her credibility as a coach (not as an artists, of course) when she would often turn for average singers and praise the above-average ones as if they were the greatest bunch of singers alive today..Jusko..marami nga sa mga pinuri niya nang sobra2x ay wala na ngayon..one would think that if you are able to have somebody as accomplished and knowledgeable as Lea Salonga very excited with your singing talent, then you would be likely to have a career ahead of you..I mean, crazy impressed na nga sayo ang isa sa legends sa Philippine music, ano pa kaya ang mga hamak na music producers lang..yang goddes na si Lea nakuha mo na ang attention..pero marerealize mo din eventually not to fall for Lea's hyped reactions kasi marami naman pala kayong binigyan niya ng ganong papuri at reaction..so you are still nothing special, in spite of having Lea's jaw dropped and eyes wide open with your singing..kasi ganun lang talaga si Lea..apakadaling maimpress kahit siya mismo nuknukan ng galing..

Their singing ability is very explosive. They're so good at controlling their voice, but strong power at the same time. And, they can define a real singer who can give you the lyrics or can make you believe in every song they're going to sing.
They also knew how to transmit their emotions to people. And, I think... they are born to burn the stage. Yeah!
No doubt that Rachelle Ann Go is an International-National singer.
And, ofcourse Ms.Lea Salonga is no doubt, a WORLWIDE singer, because she is definitely, obviously, precisely, undoubtedly and undeniably PITCH PERFECT!

In the context of where this performance was filmed, at the 25th anniversary gala in the West End immediately following the full production, Lea breaking character is not a problem and perfectly appropriate. This segment ran for about 25 mins and incorporated Lea alongside Simon Bowman (the original Chris), Jonathan Pryce (the original Engineer) and other original cast members alongside the 25th anniversary cast. So in the context of the night Lea was entirely justified.

I don't know if you could find it online but the post musical celebration started with the lights dimmed, Lea wearing a conical hat while the overture was playing. One of the things I love about Lea ( apart from her incredible vocal talent and her excellent acting) is her genuine appreciation for her fellow artists and her generosity with her enthusiasm for their performances. She is not selfish or an obnoxious narcissistic diva, though she has earned the right to be. She celebrates the great work of her fellow artists ( mentee or not) and she has no reservations in making sure she gives support, encouragement, and appreciation to others. The moment she breaks character here is a JOY to watch because it was real, genuine, honest, and she was reacting to the very same thing we all were ... an incredible vocal moment that deserved to be relished. Because it was not being performed in the show and was a concert version , as you point out, makes that moment a wonderful kind of bonding moment for everyone watching this either live or the recording. The kind of generosity shown by Lea is refreshing and makes me love her all the more.

My favorite part of this performance is the bond between "Kim" and "Gigi." When I teach this show in my college classroom, it makes me crazy that some of my students don't understand that Chris's contention that "Kim is not a whore" is proven to be complete nonsense by this song. There is no difference between Kim and the other "performers" at Dreamland other than Kim is "lucky" enough to have her first customer convince himself that he's in love with HER instead of the chance she represents to redeem himself in his own eyes. Her resulting delusion protects her from the more realistic pessimism of the others, but they all have the same heart and the same dreams. They are all whores and they are all wonderful women who made the best choices available to them in the circumstances they lived in.

Lea and Rachel are two of my favorite Filipino stage actresses/singers.
I've seen Lea on Broadway here in NY in Ms. Saigon, Les Miserables and at one time at the West Point Military Academy.
I've seen her grow up from her Annie performance at the Insular Life Theatre in Makati, Philippines.
I give a toast to these incredible ladies!

It was interesting to see Lea do a full belt at the finish. It was so different from her usual mixed voice, also beautiful but without the raw fury of the belt she gave us here. I wonder if she did it was because of RAG, or because she knew she didn't have seven more shows to do that week. As for breaking character, I was impressed by how quickly Lea dropped back into being Kim again. I blinked and Lea was gone, there was only Kim.

Would you consider doing a reaction to Cass Daley? She's was very theatrical and started her career on Broadway in the 1930's. A perfect example of her artistry, is her performance of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" from 1954. I have a video of it here on RUclips. 😊

Pinoy power! Hahaha rachelle started as a pop singer and won in a singing contest in the philippines. I wasn’t sure before if she could be amazing in broadway since her belts aren’t as powerful as other power belters in the philippines. But damn it. She is amazing in broadway as well and that makes her a versatile singer.. That high note is definitely a perfect mix voice with some pop influences. Agreed when lea lost her character because of that note. :) haha nice one boss. Love this.

Broadway singers are "masters" of mixed belting and Rachelle is a topnotch mixed belter. I do not know what shows you have seen to say only those with "powerful" belts could be amazing in broadway.
