Though there have been many great renditions of the Star Spangled Banner, including Lady Gaga’s, Renee Fleming’s, and Jennifer Hudson's, this is considered by many Americans as the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner

This is simply the greatest version ever of TSSB. When Houston arrived in Miami to record it, her musical director, Rickey Minor, excitedly asked her if she had listened to the changed arrangement. She hadn't because Houston was busy rehearsing in L.A. for "The Bodyguard." Houston told Minor, "don't worry baby, just put it on." She listened with her eyes closed, and at the conclusion, she said "I got it." Keep in mind this was just a week before the Super Bowl, and given the war had just started, the broadcast was expected to have the biggest word-wide audience ever.
The version here known to all the world is 90% from that very first attempt. She was a vocal genius. I don't intend any disrespect to today's artists, but Houston towers above them all. She is one of the greatest voices of all time irrespective of musical genre.

In addition to the performance itself, the decision-making as a performer is just incredible. Where to be straight-forward, where to add little flourishes, she always does just the right amount. She adds just enough flair to make it a one-of-a-kind performance while staying true to the spirit of the song. She meets the moment of an internationally televised sporting event spectacle and exceeds the pressure to create something truly magical.

This was performed in Tampa which is the home of Central Command and shortly after Operation Desert Storm began. It was the first war broadcast live on TV and it was a very emotional time for America. This made the performance that much more special.

As an American veteran, I can say, it’s the most correct performance of the Star Spangled Banner, period. Ever.

Though it was pre-recorded, as all SB Anthems are, she did sing this live in the studio.

Absolutely NUTS! And you really spelled it out, @Beth Roars. Cheers from California. And Whitney nailed this, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Love you, Whitney.

You must remember that Whitney grew up on gospel music in the Black church
She sang on the choir and go all the solos!!! LoL We come from a rich musical history. We hear some of stylings in church from toddlers so it doesn't sound "extra" like it might for those who are used to more... standard kind of singing lol

Another thing that makes this rendition great is the arrangement. It may not be as obvious to non-Americans, but there's a lot of reharmonization in the chords. And it's in a different meter.

@@rafewheadon1963 no she’s not, she was simply explaining the difference of positioning her mouth and her control. I don’t see her trying to keep up with Whitney, She is a voice coach, and her explanation show that

Several celebrities have titles, and hers is called The Voice. This is why. There are plenty of good singers and plenty of great singers , and then there’s that damn Whitney…
