I was shocked to hear GM described as cheesy also! I guess if you only know Wham and a few later singles? By the end of the 80s sax solos were a cliche but this song was a massive hit for George Michael and rightly so. Best she listen to his solo albums especially the first three starting with Faith.. I think he was the finest male vocalist of the 80s and 90s.

This is a man who by far outstripped his fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees of 2023 to get over 1 million votes and got his induction on the first try unlike shockingly Janet Jackson who it took three attempts or other great artists who took several tries, so you can't call him a guilty pleasure either. Yes maybe if George Michael was only Careless Whisper - a song he wrote at the age of 17! But he grew up you know, and if you love him as much as you say you do you ought to know about some of his other work with amazingly beasutiful and MATURE lyrics. Everyone has the right to their opinions, so usually I wouldn't bother to write a comment, but I would hate it if a younger generation who listen to your reaction would somehow be made to believe that listening to George Michael's music is cheesy, NO, far from it. I love George Michael too and I want his music to live on for generations to come. Beth, seeing as you love him, do yourself a favour and listen to his album Older for example. First off, love your reaction and I am a huge fan of George Micheal and in particular Careless Whisper and even more particular the version he performed in China in 1984!
That being said, the version you watch miss, is a playback from the original song that is being played in the official clip! He didn't sing live because I know in which program he was performing here, which is TopPop. This is a dutch program I know very well as a child (I am dutch myself) and it was very popular in the 80s and all performers always playback! 🙄👎
The real live performance and a much better version would be for you the 1984 version of Careless Whisper he did in China! Also the version he sings together with Smokey Robinson the song Careless Whisper is 100% live and special because of the double voices. 👍

Have to agree with comment below this is not cheesy. The 70s and 80s had great groups, great sounds, and great music. Not like today with autotune and all the other computer generated gimmicks. They also do not have a rapper in the middle or start of song that always has to promote who ever the singer is with their names. These had lyrics that can be covered by a lot of people. Soulful and awesome vocal talent. Today's music has too many over the top singers relying on their looks or their bodies being exposed to sell music instead of the music and talent standing on their own.
I also agree the Sax was used heavily during this time and it made for great music. Sad to see all the people moving away from that and other awesome instrumental talents. George (RIP) was an amazing vocalist/artist.

I think some of Wham’s music might be “a bit cheesy” but not George Michael as a solo artist.

Such a great song! I’m glad Seether updated it for a new audience a few years back.. also you just said guilty pleasure, there’s no such thing no need to be guilty..

Seether is trash, and that "update" is an abomination of banality and derivative goofiness.

I was smiling all through out this video. George Michael is one heck of a technical singer with a very unique tone. Sadly often overlooked in preference of big belters like.

It's so crazy that he's been dead for like 5 years. I'd swear he was still alive. "Mandela Effect."
    RIP.

Listen to the way he says "I've" been given. His voice goes into this incredible smooth falsetto he sounds exactly like Barry Gibb then it drops right back down to his normal range.

...end he wrote this (music and lyrics) at 19.
Later one of his long time friend struggle with money, so George add the guy as a "co-writer" so every money he get from this (which is....a LOT) half gose on to the friend.
George Micheal was one of a kind. Well he was the only guy that Queen asked for to go on with them after Freddy died. So...yes.
He was one of a kind amazing talent, left us with 4 albums, yes 4 and become a legend.

A few years ago, my best friend of the time, a woman named Kim, and I went to the Amp in Tampa for a Nickelback show.
Well, she wanted a Tshirt. The line was long. I was concerned we would lose track of each other, so I waited outside of the crowd.
The opening act had a cover of "Frozen Whispers"and I missed it!
The things you do for love.

Faith sold 10 million. He won awards over Michael Jackson and Madonna that year. To be the best you've got to beat the best, and he did in 1988. Can any of you guys imagine on your first solo album getting called up to the podium with Michael Jackson sitting in the seat looking at you getting in a ward over him?

Some of the phrasing he uses comes from his British background. He started as a member of Wham, from UK

Like others I don't consider this song a guilty pleasure, nor do I consider this song or really any song I heard by him to be cheesy. Even though he was a huge star back then and even before he passed, I still considered him to be very underrated as a musician, writer, and even as a singer.

I can tell Beth is english speaking when she says George Michael is cheasy but doesn´t say the same about Luismi. Those are very similar genres and techniques. And when you really listen, the "cheasy" aspect fades away, and it´s simply great techniques and voice quality.

If George Michael is a guilty pleasure, then you need to watch the movie Music and Lyrics. It's a thinly veiled tribute to Wham! and pokes fun in a respectful way to that genre of music.
