A gift she wanted to share with the world. Whitney said god gave her something special. She was not bragging just stating the obvious. 😊

    This is all true HOWEVER, >SOUND< is the difference! The way Whitney Houston sounded was just otherworldly. You can employ the same technique, but the delivery is incomparable.

    Whitney Houston's chest was the best chest in musical history. She was powerful, full and chesty till her very highest mixed note. Noone had ever done her chesty G5s ever. It's something only she has done so greatly and with masterful technique, having solid technical chest till high up.

    I use the song "I Will Always Love You" frequently to practice head voice, and to annoy my children. When it's dinner time and my son Zander is upstairs, I belt out a "Zandaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrreeeeeiiii" to get him to come down. I also use this technique in the grocery store as well when I purchase endives. "Endiiiiiiiiiieeeeeiiiiivvvee"

    aside from being gifted with such golden tone, she has immense skills all over her voice. the excellence in dynamics, both mixed and head register, melisma, control and etc.

      I honestly believe her prime was in the early 90's or 89-92. Of course in the 80's she had crazy range, but I think in the early 90's she had 90-95% of her 80's range but it seemed she discovered YET ANOTHER level of control of her voice as well as her voice kind of naturally maturing. I love me some I'm Your Baby Tonight and Bodyguard era live performances.

      @@dedreandixon4620 so agree! In the early 80s, it was almost jokingly easy for her to climb into the upper registers. She still could in the early 90s, but there was a new richness in her voice. She someone managed to perfect perfection. Only whitney lol.

      I would say 89-92 is her prime in my opinion, she just improved her control and her tone matured from her first albums just like mariahs did around 93-95 vs 90-92

    Whitney's approach is veeeeery dificult. It takes lots of time (years) and intense training to master. Mix is preferred among singers because allows you to sing higher and take way less time to develop it.

      Mix is not that easy to develop either, hence why you even some of the better singers struggle with high notes, and push the note out. It also can wear your voice out quicker if you try to force any power in your mix

    I'm a 21 year old countertenor and I find it difficult to hit a note using purely upper chest just like in 3:01. It turns out to be mixed or somehow in female sound. So, it amazes me when I hear a male singer singing that high using their chest voice. I can hit chest up to F4 and mix up to B5. My voice has just been exercised singing in Whitney since when I was a kid.

      Me too. I'm 25. I can't belt like that. I tend to mix from like C4. And extend to around bb5 or D6 in a good day and in most extremity . It's always been hard to add power, rawness or even just growling due to how light my voice is. I'm a leggiero.

    Its hard to try to simplify or demonstrate Whitneys technique. Most of her voice is attributed to her gift in her tone

      Whitney said out of her own mouth that her mom was her biggest inspiration and influence on the way she sings. Her mom taught her everything she knew, all of Whitney’s flawless techniques were taught by Cissy. Dionne of course was an influence too but Cissy was her mother.

    Nothing can be explain to sing like Whitney. She was truly born a gifted singer. The dark quality of her voice just blows me away. Just take a look at her performance in church when she was probably around 12 or 13.

    Totally Chris. Going back to the 1960s, I have found two male vocalists who were really skilled at this were Bobby Hatfield (The Righteous Brothers) and Gary Puckett (Gary Puckett & The Union Gap). Both had beautiful transition skills.

      your voice type does not determine her singing style. Very few peopel understand how difficult it is to sing like her. There are many spintos but they just do not understand how to use their voice for greater effect

I am clearly saying your voice fach does not explain your singing style at all.     She had an amazing voice and a perfect technique. I have one question: the first "I.. will" is an A and it is a chest voice but when she modulates higher, it is a B up to d flat, is she in chest voice of a mix ?. I think it is a very well trained mix. Could anybody confirm that?

    Very nice. I agree. Whitney Houston and Bruce Dickinson can sing with such warmth in their tone in very high registers and do that for a long time. If you could do a video of Bruce Dickinsons kind of singing, it would be really interesting :)

    Excellent stuff! Your tone soundes a bit like Freddie Mercury's on some of those belt notes. Would you be able to analyze the always impressive Harry Neilson? His belt and tone control are phenomenal. His unique writing style is also just a timeless treat. But please, just not lime in the coconut... Any other song of his lol

    OMG your voice is amazing! And yes definitely Whitney had the best technique! I loved how when she performed her songs live she sounded different from the studio, but somehow make it sound still beautiful. My favorite live performance from Whitney is “Greatest Love of all” performed on March 17, 1991.

    Chris, why has straight-out belting (WITHOUT all those irritating runs and riffs nearly all popular singers employ nowadays) gone out of style? Do you have any thoughts on that?
    I love a singer that sings with big round notes and can hold a note for more than a few seconds without over singing or destroying a song's original melody.

    When I'm in studio i can make false notes (flat or too high notes) coz i don't hear myself good. Especially because of the drums. In concert, the drums were electronic so it was not loud anymore, and my singing was way better and precise.
    Have you some hints to hear yourself better in studio rehearsal ?

    Chris, About the mix voice..how do i know im singing with mix voice? Cause im a barritone im little bit confuse what it suppose to feel sometimes i feel im singing high note directly head voice. I rewatch u mix voice explanation ...but still confuse about how it suppose to feel..

      Ive tried .. several thing that make me sing like ugly kinda voice...and it seems...my head feels tension a bit when doing the fry technique...do we supposed to feel a bit of tension?...if no ....ill immediately stop the way i try to find it.

    My mix sound like my chest
    I never use my chest voice 💀 only for low notes and and my low mid range.

    What note was your belted note? And how high can you belt?

    Whitney was anointed. It's beyond analytics. And growing up in a black church helps beyond what's learned with formal training.

    Average vocal range is only 2 octaves, so that is definitely a limiting factor.

      the average vocal range is 2 octaves because the average vocalist does not understand how to use their different resonances and feels to expand it! Those who understand should have no problem adding at least another octave!

      @@chrisliepe Unless someone has no idea how to use head voice for their highest notes I don't believe adding a full octave is possible. Adding a few notes, yes, but a full octave....... I have my doubts.
