    Every time I make a new discovery in my voice, I revisit these old fundamentals videos and discover even more layers to the concepts and practices Chris explains. I must've watched these videos 20 odd times each, and every time I understand more and more layers. The fact these lessons are on the internet for free is absolutely incredible. If you haven't dived into his courses yet, DO IT! Do it and watch them over and over, I've never stopped learning new things.

    So I know that I have been commenting often but straight up from the bottom of my heart each one was inspired by actual events, major breakthroughs, real progress. Honestly I haven’t had progress like this in years; I’ve been at a plateau for quite some time, probably going in 2 years now… Until I found you. No BS.
    So the main thing I wanted to let you in on was the last three years I’ve been doing Ken T. Vocal Academy. And I by no means aim to slander or make it sound like a bad program; just like any program it’ll work for some, and some not so much. So, for me, discovering you has quickly become a game changer! You’re able to make it make so much sense. Really looking forward to becoming a part of your class/group/online program.

I’ll be working on this continually now, and I wish you success with it too

    Thanks so much for this! Finally I find someone who understands what's happening to me. I've been taking voice lessons for a little more than a year and I got the breath support part down, but it still feels kind of foreign to me because when I see some people sing they seem so relaxed but when I sing it feels like I'm getting an ab workout. I also watched your video on compression and I'm a little confused. My question is how much bearing down and flexing is enough bearing down and flexing? My teacher says that the softer or higher I sing the more I need to flex, but it actually aggravates me when I'm literally about to get a hernia and he says I need more support. Whenever I squeeze more it just makes my throat and neck really tight and I guess accidentally makes me compress? But when I accidentally compress it hurts my throat and it feels like I'm swallowing my voice as I'm singing? Do you know what I'm saying? How can I bear down and flex while still sounding relaxed and not tensing my throat (specially while singing softly AND/OR while sitting down)? And is my "compression" actually compression or is it just me tensing up my throat as a result of my exaggerated support and confusing it for compression? What does compression feel like? Because it SOUNDS very uncomfortable like you're tensing up your whole upper body, specially your throat.
    Also would it be possible for you to make a video on how to be more accurate when going up and down scales and intervals and just singing in general and how that whole thing works and how to practice it? I study music in college and I've been doing sight-singing and stuff, but even if I know the melody that doesn't guarantee I'm gonna be 100% accurate on every pitch (drives me insane because I can hear myself singing off-pitch yet I can't help it). I can kind of sing with accompaniment, but without it it's really hard. How can I improve that?
    And real quick some ideas that I haven't seen you've made videos about: How to sing low notes, how singing sitting down is different than when standing up, and how to not run out of air so fast.
    Sorry I wrote so much but I really really really need some help because my teacher, although he's good, doesn't seem to know the answer to my problems so it's up to me to figure it out. I REALLY want to learn how to sing. Thanks a lot :)

    Hey Chris, I've heard you mention again and again "holding back air" and "letting a little air through"... but there are 3 things I can't make sense of. 1) holding back air from... leaving? Entering? I'm not sure what you mean. And in either case 2) Should we assume you're taking in a breath beforehand? (Otherwise I wouldn't know how in the world you're supporting the notes you're singing) and finally 3) Do you engage that lower abdominal before or after taking in air to sing with? They seem to work against each other. No matter what this concept baffles me 😕

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +1

      1) Yes holding back from LEAVING
      2)Yes
      3)Well you can't be pushing out and taking in air at the same time, but your mind should be focused on your lower abs the whole time :)

    • @brandonquick4659
      @brandonquick4659 4 года назад +1

      @@chrisliepe this will haunt my dreams haha. In my mind "engaged" lends to a sort of "clenching"... which would keep the stomach from expanding as air is taken in. So I'm guessing it's a lighter firm of core engagement that's enough to help control air, but not going to keep you from taking in air? My brain is jelly ._____.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 года назад +1

      @@brandonquick4659 It's more of a mindset thing... not a legalistic thing :) Airflow support should come from the the "poop" muscles. Our engagement is MENTAL. WHEN you engage physically is on a "needs" basis. So when you're breathing in, you don't need to be flexed or physically engaged. That's actually impossible. But we don't want to forget to direct our mind's attention to our poop muscles the instant we start engaging our cords. Over time, this will be something you'll practice into an "auto pilot" state.

    • @brandonquick4659
      @brandonquick4659 4 года назад +2

      @@chrisliepe that is probably the best worded answer to this ridiculously elusive concept, Thank You man! Out of all the things I've been working on, this is where I sorely lack. I will be sure to poop before practicing (or just wear a diaper) and get right on this 👍🏾

  • @sylvainpanneau6460
    @sylvainpanneau6460 6 месяцев назад

    Ok yeah the advice of poop muscles plus compression is really useful. If I understand correctly, trying to poop pushes the air up your throat, and you manage all that airflow with compression?
    How often should you compress to manage airflow? All the time? Or can you just try to poop? Also, how MUCH should we poop? Because if I do it too much, I can't place my voice correctly and thus pitch problems arise

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  6 месяцев назад +1

      How MUCH should we use it is the correct question to ask.
      Don't think of compression as an on off switch, but think of it more as a knob where you can have 0 to 100% compression. There is no correct answer to how much we should use, Its a matter of balance and what sound you're trying to achieve with the compression.

    _As you explained Chris ....I tried to do that(inhale and tighten the abdominal muscles) ....but I can't feel any difference when singing with that breath support and singing without that breath support and after trying 5 minutes on my lower muscles have a little pain feeling ....I think I can't use that breath pressure on my singing .... How to deal with it !?😶_

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  3 года назад +1

      Practice the breathing and support engagement for awhile without singing... don't try to do both and get used to it!

    I wanna buy this course. I'm a little scared, I don't know if my baritone voice can get an improvement. Somebody told only tenor voices are the best for singing.

      I’m a baritone. :)

    • @qwertyasdf001
      @qwertyasdf001 4 года назад

      I think what they mean is a tenor has the most applicable range. Mezzo/sopranos can’t go that low (exceptions don’t apply) and bass singers can’t go that high (again with exceptions). But that is definitely not true at all. Some parts of singing don’t have to do with vocal type at all. Agility for examples. Vibrato. Tone. Resonance. Etc.... (someone please correct me if I’m wrong)

    So when you say your sending energy downwards and upwards, does that mean the downward focus is engaging support and the upwards focus is voice/breath originating from the downward energy/support?

    Hi Chris. Is it normal to feel some discomfort above the vocal chords after singing with compression

    • @chrisliepe

      I think of it as "heat"... it shouldn't be uncomfortable, but 'used' and engaged. Ease into it and this should be the case for you too!

    This happens to me a lot. I watch Chris's videos, not once, not twice, but some times dozen of times, thinking I understand what he is talking about then a time comes while watching the same video again I say "wait a minute maybe I don't know what he is talking about." In this case, the term “bearing down muscles”. Is that your Ass muscles or is that your lower Stomach muscles????. Sorry, Chris, for this question, but I wanted to be sure.

    This may sound stupid but, by flexing abdominals muscles do you mean pulling inward like a stomach vacuum or pushing forward like when you are squatting, OH pressing etc? These muscles feel like can be pushed and pulled anywhere and I'm confused.
