You've worked hard, practiced harder and are in the midst of a performance that isn't going or feeling the way you'd hoped. Your neck is tight, your face is tense and you are not hitting the notes the way you know you can!
What's going on? Why all the straining to just get through the song? In this video, we're going to study the countenance and techniques of two singers that, are not virtuoso vocalists, but if looked at in the right light, can help you with massive breakthroughs in your battle with strained singing.
Try the exercises and see how they help! They'll work almost instantly if you go into them with the right mindset.

This is the reason they teach opera singers to stand in one place, if learn to control your voice standing still without strain on your face, or anywhere on your body your voice is all yours in any other posture.
Also we many times tie a move to a note, for example moving your hand while hitting "the high note" if you don't do that you don't feel safe. Learn to let that go, you have room to feel unsafe and practice at home, not so much on stage.

I think playing another instrument while singing helps with this so much (at least for me). Playing guitar AND singing AND performing is so much to keep track of that I end up pushing my singing focus to the backburner while playing (and my voice is always the better for it)

I think Tom Petty is GREAT singer in the sense that he communicates, gets the feeling of the song across perfectly and is EXACTLY who he is. I aspire to be like him in that sense. I write some and get so much inspiration from him. My band covers some of his songs, and I struggle to make them our own without mimicking which I feel could be disrespectful while still trying to honor their essential features. I listen to his live performances and dig how he takes the moment to interpret them for the stage. I actually feel this way for a lot of the songs I cover, trying to figure a way to cover that both takes the original artist performance into account and somehow lets "me" into the performance. I hope someday to feel like I am actually pulling this trick off.

try putting a small room reverb on the master bus to make it sound like they are in a live jam room situation when recording them. I was having trouble recording with the same energy as a live performance and then randomly thought to give that a shot and it made me sing so much better because it felt more like I was in a room jamming with people. Totally my problem. Even for the range. Sometimes, I'll warm up doing the siren and think "that was comfortable. It probably wasn't that high". Then I check what the note was, realise it was, indeed, at the top of my range and I can't hit the note anymore. Being at once free and in control is my main challenge. TLDR: My head gets in the way. I am good at having a relaxed face, though. Sometimes I remember to open my eyes and mouth to be brighter and more engaging.

Chris - this is one of the most important questions I have. As someone who is trained and has performed for many years... the one thing that helps... is using my nose to hit high notes or resonate easier.. Ever since I had a botched nose job it is harder. But want to know if your technique is coming only from diaphragm and vocal cords OR if not having a nose does have an effect on this because I find it easier to project, move my voice around ect. when I open my nose up with devices which is crazy but,.... hey its wahtever at this point

Ha! I usually sing better live. I have a "just get out & do it" mentality where the stage forces me to focus on entertaining people properly regardless of my daily mood. Live I have an all or nothing mentality. Mind you I'm more of a Screamin' Jay Hawkins performer: I tend to have a "rubber face" and jump around. You really need to relax and focus for that to work

    P.S.
I just sing how I feel, I don't think about it. However there are some moments where I just sense and know in my throat and tongue that it is more on and just effortless, different sort of zen...there is no rhyme or reason to it that I can find personally. It's evasive but feels silky, sultry and satisfying.

He was great! So many ways to use the voice, The more you relax the WHOLE body the more it flows out Using your breathing correctly of course and being aware of grabbing..I must constantly be aware of things like this or No go! I don't think you've ever analyzed Michael Barnes but, I was singing along with Gone (Red) and in the chorus he gets pretty high (I think a G) in what seems like chest voice. For me, my chest voice is loudest. For most I'd think as well.
So, either his range is different or I'm doing something wrong, as I cannot hit it without going into mixed, and the *change* is noticeable.
I'm putting this here bc I'm, thanks to you, aware of straining and I don't strain. So I practice not straining with that song. I suppose my question is if you could do a vid on his vocals, where he has a high chest voice (I think). He's said in an interview that in the studio he does push too hard. So perhaps he is straining.
I can hit it in chest if I strain but I do not want to do that obviously. So it's like he gives into pressure, as I have in the past, and strains to hit a volume, as that's been a complaint from people about my voice. And I'm real tired of it.

something I struggle with is I never want to do these vocal exercises that don't sound like real singing because I live with roommates and thin walls so they wouldn't want to hear me screeching while I practice hitting notes and tones I'm not good at yet. is there like some kind of practice isolation box studioless singers can wear over their head or something

That's part of it - ur never going to get to the point where you are totally comfortable singing w roommates listening, but if you can't deal w that then ur never going to get any better. You just have to accept where you're at and sing anyway. I taught nearly 250 vocal lessons throughout lock down so I know the struggle. All my neighbors could always hear me for every note I sang and I just had to deal with it cause It was my job, and it made me a MUCH more confident singer. You're roommates won't care. Just do it!!

Maybe I am wrong, but is sounds like demo songs have auto-tune going. Please, tell me... you don't demo singing techniques and use any kind of pitch correcting devices or software? Do you? Swear I could hear it. Again, maybe, I'm wrong. You are obviously multi-tracking, which, in itself, helps blend takes into better-sounding pitch.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 года назад

There is zero auto tuning of my voice. In this particular demo at the beginning there are some leftover Lenny harmonies in there cause I couldn’t find a track without them. Those I think may have been tuned but not by me

The truth is you can't teach people to sing you can coach them but unless you have a natural natural talent to sing then you just cant be taught to sing this is why i never give vocal lessons although i Do coach singers sometimes as a music producer but people who have natural singing talent dont need much coaching
