  • Let’s talk about Bird of Paradise (BOP)! BOP is such a beautiful tropical plant. Like other houseplants, they will get sick if they don’t receive proper care. Today, I’m going to share some common issues with BOP and ways to avoid them.
    Btw, Costco currently (March, 2020) has a lot of BOP and other tropical plants for $27.99

    HI!! I got my Bird of Paradise right at the Beginning of the Pandemic at Home Depot. It was damaged and very small but plants at that time were very far & few to find and I bought it anyway. I put it in my South facing window…but a few feet back so it gets filtered bright light. It has flourished! I also at the suggestion of my sister put it in LECA. It has no dirt in the pot…just LECA. This plant Grew so much in the LECA BALLS. I get so many compliments on this plant. It’s one of my favorite plants.

    The splits in the leaves on plants of this size is usually to help them withstand strong wind. Otherwise the leaves would act as a sail and risk snapping the stem, or tipping the plant over.

    This was SO helpful! I just bought one and put it on my patio and the sunburn happened. Good to know it will acclimate with the new leaves. For now, I put it more in the shade with indirect sunlight mixed with small amounts of direct sunlight. Thanks for all the tips!

    Alot of times we can mistake sunburn as fertilizer burn just fyi. Once of my leaves died off completely a couple of days after i fertilized. I made the mistake of pouring the fertilizer into the soil and watering separately. Instead of mixing the fertilizer with the water

    greetings from sunny UK , have had the BOP for 8 years and finally this week have a flower stalk . Waiting for it to open , its a deep purple. The pot lives outside in the summer, but is moved inside the cold green house before the first frost. Biggest problem , is the wind damage on the leaves .

    • @SunnySideUpwithNicole
      @SunnySideUpwithNicole  4 года назад +5

      Wow I'm so excited for you!!! Yes it is very normal that their leaves split during windy environment. It helps the sunlight to be able to go to the bottom of the plant. I would not call it a wind damage. It is very natural for BOP to do that. I hope this helps!

    Thank you very much for your video. Yesterday I purchased a bird of paradise plant from a person Who lives not far from me here in Henderson, Nevada and I am thrilled and want it to grow successfully. The plant is about four years old and it never flowered, but I’m fine if it doesn’t. Like you, I love the tropical feel it gives to my home. I know that I need to buy some plant food today and I will see how my plant thrives throughout the next few days. Thank you once again for your help.

    The BOP will split its leaves also if it gets high winds . they split their leaves in order to not be pulled completely out of the ground. Its self preservation ! ❤ So if the plant is outside, they will split to save themselves ! What's not to love !! ❤❤❤

    Hi Nicole, I'm both a "liker" and subscriber from Lake Charles, LA. We have a subtropical climate here, which means our climate borders on a tropical zone and we do have an occasional light freeze, at which time I bring my tropical plants inside for the night.
    I have a B-O-P, the smaller variety (Strelitzia reginae) that has 3 clumps, or separate plants in one pot. I do have a large plant that looks similar to the large (S. nicolai) "bird" called a "Traveler's Palm" or Ravanala Madagascarienis. Many unfamiliar with it mistake it for a large "bird", but eventually they get a LOT larger and more magnificent. Google it! I think it must have been grown under a shade cloth because it burns easily and the leaves curl if put it direct sunlight. In the wild, they do, so I'm introducing it slowly in about 30 min. per day increments. Eventually, it'll get too tall for my porch so I told my sister she can have it where they can put it in a glassed-in atrium of her church. The ceiling there is about 20' so it can grow there many years, as long as we could appoint someone to water it on a schedule. Thanks for posting and happy gardening! 🪴🌴

    I put mine outside once and it was REALLY HAPPY with the rain. So naturally when it rained again I left it out for two days. It turned black 😭😭😭. I worked so hard on keeping my plant happy and now the leaves look like crap. I think it’s due to overwatering because the soil was really wet for a while. In conclusion, the first time I set it out the leaves made the water fall to the side, this time it didn’t. Also I watered it right before putting it outside soooo 😬. The drainage holes didn’t work

  • @mattjohnston2
    @mattjohnston2 3 года назад

    I bought my first BoP not knowing what it was! It's in a medium planter with a few other tropical plants (dipladenia, and 2 other unidentified ones). I'm in Canada and I brought it outside a little too early, the next morning I found it catastrophically frosted, every leaf had died. Against what I thought were all odds, with it cut to the ground, this summer she popped back out and is now 4 good leaves strong!
    You did a great job making this video, it was informative and I appreciated your personal experience with your plant! You were well paced, I could clearly understand you, you're rather pretty, and you address the camera well! If I can offer some feedback, while editing, try and cut out the tiny parts where you cough or hang on an "umm". The job you've done is already great, and I'll be definitely checking out more of your content, but that might help you put a bit more polish on the presentation! 😊

    I was so proud of how well my birds of paradise had been growing since I purchased it... until recently... I realized it the root ball specifically wasn't drying out. So the outter rim of the pot was saying moist or dry but then closer to the plant was reading as soaking wet... and not bouncing back, I had a feeling the soil I wasn't well draining enough so I tried repotting adding more sand (and splitting at the same time) .. But after repotting it started drooping WAY more. I read the shock would need water after repotting so I added water... but then It rained so it got more water.. oof... the leaves are still very curled and droopy....(some of the stems look shriveled with tony fine lines running up it.... .its not looking great. I can't tell if I should cut some stems off or just leave it alone... ...The roots looked fine when I repotted so I figured it would live...... is there anything I can do to make sure it does? I'm getting a bit worried its going to die.

      Is your plant outside? Bringing it inside and putting it next to a decently lit window might do well. An indoor plant also means you get to control how much water it gets. Also, it might be beneficial for you to look at the roots again and see if any are dead. Make sure your soil has well drainage, and sand probably isn't best for that. I suggest using peat moss and or perlite with your soil. The perlite will make little gaps in the soil and assist with drainage. Some plants are very sensitive to repotting, but I don't think the bird of paradise is. Making sure you have a big pot with a lot of drainage will do well for the plant, too. My pot is probably two feet tall and 1.5 feet wide. It has several drainage holes too and has been doing alright. (It has a couple burn marks, that's it). If there are any totally dead stems/leaves, I'd cut them off at the base of the plant. I did it to mine, and it was fine. ☺️ I hope this helped!

    1. In terms of watering, I’ve seen a plant professional watering the plant that the soil gets good soak and leave it to drain(provided your planter has drainage at the bottom) and wait until the soil is dry to do it again rather than frequent watering. What are your thoughts on this?
    2. what exact soil type do you use for your BOP? The soil that came with it from when I got it from Lowe’s is almost like a coconut husk feel without any typical soil at all.
    3. What fertilizer brand do you use?

    • @SunnySideUpwithNicole
      @SunnySideUpwithNicole  4 года назад +6

      Hey Isabelle, thanks for leaving your questions here.
      1. I agree. I usually let the soil dry out before I water it again. Yes good soak is great. However, my plant is too big and too heavy, it is impossible for me to move it around. That's why I use a self-watering pot. I use my soil meter to test the moisture level first (too big for me to dig my fingers in lol). If it is thirsty, I give it some water. I stop until i hear the water coming down to the self watering "saucer"/tray.
      2. I usually remove most of the original soil when repotting my plants. However, it is always good to leave some there so that they can transition to a new environment in a more comfortable way. For this BOP, I used the potting mix I got from big box store, and then added a little bit worm castings as slow released fertilizer, and then added some perlite or orchid bark to provide more airy environment. There is no set ratio. I just eyeballed it.
      3. I use Alaska Fish Fertilizer for all my indoor and outdoor plants. It stinks so bad but they love it.
      Let me know if you have any questions.

      That happened to me too. Mine stayed furled for a long time because I don’t think I had enough humidity. I placed a wet cloth around the “spear”...it immediately unfurled but it was yellowed/brown when it did. I think it’s because it was wrapped so tight without light for too long. Now I leave a humidifier near it as much as I can.

    I brought one from my local supermarket,about a month ago,it's still quite small and a new leaf has opened in that time,but seems to have stoped,as in the new leaf is still curled a little and been like that for a couple of weeks now! Have I done something wrong? I hope it doesn't die,,I love my new plant and got it because I'm not very good with plants and heard that they was resilient! Thanks for this video!❤🇬🇧

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Nicole. I’ve had mine about 6 months. It’s been so slow I growing. But I got a grow light and that has really helped. It started to put up a new leaf immediately. I do fertilize every week when it gets watered. Do they need to dry out between watering? I’ve got an app that wants me to water every 5-6 days. So it’s always damp.

      No problem! You can also put it outdoor (east/north facing) this summer. They will enjoy the gentle sunlight and leaves won't burn!

    I bought a BOP then went on vacation for 4 days. I came back and all the leaves had curled and dehydrated hard core😅. I thought it would be okay with the watering situation i had set up. I was so sad lets see if i can help it survive.

    Very informative. I had mine for about six months and it's been doing fine. Except the last few weeks it has started getting burns at the very edges of the leaves. Very dark coloured burns. And I've not changed anything I've been doing. It used to face a north facing window but I thought it would be happier at a south facing window to get more direct sunlight, We are going into winter now so less sunlight and heat (UK weather) . And I'm a bit confused and concerned for my pretty.

    My bird of paradise has had the same 2 leaves for a year atleast. I don't know how to make it grow! And I'm surprised these 2 leaves are still there in good condition. Anybody has the same situation? What helped?

    Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!
